I just got a storage here. I've had units before, but this place is legit. Fran was an excellent representative! A little background: I used to go build houses and give food to the homeless with Brian Caster and his family during my high school years. The Caster family owns the A1 -- so It's always been in the back of my head for my storage needs. I don't always have the same view points as the Casters, but they run a solid business. I had another storage facility for about a year in East Lake, but I wanted to use A1 -- it just wasn't convenient then. Looks like they've opened up a ton of self-storages around the county, and the technology is top notice. Remember when self storage was a key pad and you bring your own pad lock? Well this place is a key pad that's got a cool gate that opens upward, and the locks (though purchased from A1 at $10) are not easy to cut. You'd have to drill into the lock to remove it. No smash and grabs here! I think my stuff is safe. It looks safe and secure. And I think in the end, all I want is my stuff worth about $100 bucks to be safe with me paying $140 bucks a month. Fran was EXCELLENT. Showed me the place before and took care of me getting my paperwork in order for rental. Very professional, and personable. This place is also clean as can be, which is pretty awesome. So good to be using A1 after all these years! read more

Well I have been with A-1 Self Storage for about a month now, and everything has been A-1 (haha see what I did there?). Anyway on a more serious note, so far my entire process and experience with A-1 has been excellent. I was calling around for a couple weeks trying to find the best local place to store my one-bedroom apt. that could offer me the most fair price, but was also in a safe area, where in case I would have to got at night, I'd feel safe. I called A-1, and at the time they were offering 1st month free if I "reserve today," however, it was the last day for the promo. The customer rep on the phone was very friendly and confident I would still get that deal, but wanted to confirm with Fran, the owner. Fran honored the deal for me despite the deal expiring that day. Thank you Fran!! (And thank you Yelp!!) I went a few days later to take a tour of the facility; I told Fran that I would be using movers, so she worked very hard to find me the best unit that would make the move in time with the movers faster (since Im paying movers by the hour). She found me a wonderful unit, and it was very easy on the movers as well. The facility is immaculate and is also energy friendly. The building is very well secured as you get a personal code for your unit that you have to enter before going into your unit and also disarm upon leaving. Each unit has a security alarm, which is awesome. If anything changes, I will update my review, but honestly, could not imagine a better, or easier experience than I have already had with A-1 in La Mesa. Thank you! read more

They increased our rate after 6 months, however, at the time of signing for our unit, we did not know that price offered to us was only promotional. Felt really misled since we did not know the extra charges were EVER going to take place. We thought the price we were offered was just that... Emailed them with my concerns of this surprise change knowing that the price won't go back to its original, but that whoever aided us failed to mention that it would increase after 6 months. Ms. Stella Cook, who we have been in contact with, claims they have notified us prior the increase, however, I have no record of any mail or email telling us so. Our only emails from A-1 are invoices and payment receipts. No letter stating, "Hey guys! We're charging you more money now. K bye!" I am well aware the price will not be as originally offered. Cool. I also have no choice but to pay because my precious belongings are still there. Just wanted to let them know that they misled us into thinking the price was set and to let us know from the BEGINNING NEXT TIME that it was ONLY PROMOTIONAL. There is no need to cover up with, "Well the rate increase is automated and I made sure it did it at the right time." Ok. But did we know? No! Because it should have been said at the time of signing. Anyway. Like I told them, I hate to think that misleading customers is their purpose because I would like to be a loyal customer in between all my moves. But that's how I felt. EDIT: While I have checked every paper file and every email folder I have, I still have no trace of notification that my rate would increase. Anyway. Stella had reached out to me resolving the issues pertaining to our account. Thank you for explaining the process much better. Now we won't feel blindsided by rate increases to come. That's all we needed. Notification and communication. Hopefully everything goes smoothly from here on out. Thank you again for your time. I do hope you notify all your customers next time about promotional vs. non promotional prices. read more

I was looking for a place to keep mine & my roommate's things during our move to our new house & I came across A1 storage in La Mesa! The staff was very helpful! Ashley answered my phone call & she was able to find me a storage unit that would best accommodate our household items! She told me there was a 50% special off all units & I thought, "what a deal!" When we arrived, Lulu showed us two different storage units & we ended up picking the second option! Fran was also very helpful when filling out the paperwork! Just got storage short term- LULU who was behind the desk was so helpful- there's a bunch of units- and I don't know how she remembers which units are available and which are not- it is clear that she cares about making sure that we code in and out even when the gate is opened to monitor who is coming in and out of the property. The place is clean, and Lulu runs a tight ship. Very friendly- got the first month FREE and I checked in to be gifted 3 boxes. Their sales room is full of items that I would have never thought of needing- so I bought mattress covers (plastic) - ONE thing that sucks is that we have to buy our own lock from them- so once we are done with a-1 storage, the lock is mine to keep- but what for?? It is custom only for their storage locks....so what I'll do is just post on FB if anyone is going to use A-1, I'll offer them my lock. ;) I'm still using them, I'm thinking now I can safely store my water crafts (once I get them). I had reserved a 10x10 (online) as I had a semi truck delivering my things from NC. I talked with the staff on the phone and they reserved for me. Today when I got there to pay for the storage unit, we determined the semi would have issue so they worked with me to get a 10x15 unit. AWFUL is the only word I can think of!!! We stored our whole house stuff here for 2 1/2 yrs only to have almost everything destroyed by rats!!! We were then told the extra insurance we paid for didn't cover rats!!! They didn't care that almost all our stuff was damaged or ruined they were only worried about getting the poop off the floor and making sure other people didn't find out!!! read more

This is our first time ever renting a storage unit. We had visited 3 other storage units that a. Were to expensive and did not offer the 1st month for 1 dollar and b. Were pretty much out of space. I am so glad they were because the other 2 were really old no elevator and do not have the security that A-1 offers. Also A-1 allowed us to reserve the unit until a later date so we wouldn't lose the special or our unit. Fran helped me with my paperwork and explained all the rules throughly. I was in and out. This place is AWESOME! I stored a house full of stuff here for almost a year and was impressed every time I went to visit my stuff or add to it. It's clean, quiet, and best of all I felt safe no matter what time I was there. The hours are great and can accommodate nearly anyone's schedule. The hours here say open until 6, but that's just the office; you can access your unit until 10pm. It's climate controlled and very well monitored. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. If I ever need storage again (no offense but I hope I don't ) I would definitely come back. I will recommend A-1 on Spring Street to anyone who needs storage. Thanks guys!!! read more

The easiest move into storage EVER! From the beginning to the end, A-1 Storage is the best hands down. Fran, an employee there was very helpful and informative. She showed me the sizes of a couple units to find exactly what I needed. Did I mention, this is the cleanest storage facility that I have ever been to. There are easy access huge 10ft elevators with carts next to them to get your items to your unit with no complications. The facility stays open until 10p.m. wherein most storage locations close at 7-8pm. I give this location and employees 5 stars for their excellent service, thoroughness, and a peace of mind, knowing that your items are safe and secure. I recommend this particular storage location for all of your storage needs. Also GO and SEE Fran at the front office. She's Awesome! read more

From the moment you walk in the door your are greeted with a smile from the staff that makes you feel at ease. When I first rented six months ago Fran was extremely knowledgeable and has the type of personality that makes you want to spend the day just chatting like you would with a friend you haven't seen in a long time. Fast forward six months and I need to downsize my unit and I meet two other staff members Lulu, and Claudia. Each were equally knowledgeable and just as pleasant to talk with. Because I was looking to downsize I checked other locations and at the Center Drive location I had the pleasure of meeting Claudia again and later Grace. What became noticeably clear to me was that these employees enjoyed their jobs and wanted to provide the highest level of customer service possible. I think it's important to note that I am a very particular person and no matter who I talked with they took the time to insure that my needs were met. At no time did I feel as though I was asking for them to do too much. In my multiple visits trying to work out the best scenario to rent a smaller unit for another year Fran, Claudia, Lulu, and Grace always greeted me with a warm smile, pleasant attitude, and a great deal of patience. In the end I was able to obtain a smaller unit without changing locations. If there was ever a training model for customer service these four women exemplify what it means. I highly recommend either location as they are well maintained, clean, and safe. read more

This was my first time ever renting a storage unit and my experience was so easy going and Lulu and Fran are very knowledgeable and friendly. They help with getting the best deal, sometimes you can get a month free or 50% off some rate. The units, grounds, drive ways, and walkways are very clean and they even have flat beds available to carry your things back and forth to your car or unit. The hallways are lit at night and music playing in the background so you don't feel scared at night. I liked how everything was smooth under a time of stress (moving or putting your stuff somewhere for the meantime). There is a kiosk in the front so if the office is closed you can reserve a unit on the spot. It's great. The staff was awesome in helping with questions about rates or moving out/in and sizes of units based on the amount of stuff you have. Definitely would recommend. Thank you!! read more
