We made the mistake of going to this place on a day off. The owners looked annoyed with each other and the customers. When we said we were ready to order our food and drinks because we were hungry, he sighed and reluctantly took down our order. It felt like we were bothering them by entering their establishment. A no-rush environment, it is also kitschy with colorful decorations and a cool animatronics coin operated machine in the front. And if you eat here you just might bump into people like Pete Docter (director of UP among his many accomplishments). Side note: parking is hard to come by. FOOD: Solid. A place that serves a good variety of high quality dishes will always get better reviews. I got the fried chicken sandwich and my friend Chai got the Grayson Burger. Both of us wiped out our dishes. The bun was good, the chicken better, but for me there was something a little bit too strong with the vinegar based slaw. Solid portions with an abundance of fries cooked just right. Loved the variety. Wasn't a huge menu but great selections. SERVICE: Excellent! Just the right balance of attentiveness while still giving us space to talk. Friendly and more than willing to help. It takes a great personality to be a good host and this place has that. COST: High but not for what you get. About $15 per person but you definitely walk away feeling good. 900 Grayson is as classically Berkeley as it gets from the homely interior and small patio in back to the down home brunch cuisine being served on their menu. Whenever I drive by in this industrial heavy neighborhood in Southwest Berkeley, right off of the Ashby Avenue exit off of Interstate 80, there's always a line waiting outside the door. So imagine my surprise when I drive up for brunch plans with friends I see no line at all, in fact there was no crowd outside or inside the restaurant as it was Labor Day weekend and they were perhaps as slow as they could be all year long. So with that, our party was sat right in front of the restaurant's front window that was perfect for dining. I made sure I looked over their menu on Yelp before I even arrived to make sure I knew what their signature dishes were, and of course being a place known for brunch, as they close at 3 p.m. on the days they are open, I knew that the Demon Lover which was two pieces of Fried All Natural Chicken Breast served on a Buttermilk Waffle with an option of Old-Fashioned Cream Gravy or Vermont Maple Syrup. I knew this was what I was ordering, even though the Steak & Eggs and the Grayson Burger, which my friend did wind up ordering, options on the menu looked like solid choices as well. My other dining mate decided to also order their signature Demon Lover, but instead of a waffle, he order a side of has browns instead, as he had eaten here before and knew he didn't care for their waffle. It turns out that he was right in ordering his Fried Chicken and Potatoes dish the way that he did as my so-called buttermilk waffle was in name only, as in reality it was really a pancake. Nothing about it made it stand out as it was a soft, flavorless addition to what was an otherwise excellently season fried chicken, with dashes of paprika for good measure. I made me wish they put more thought and care into creating a uniquely thought-out waffle for their signature dish. My dish also had the gravy poured over it, while my friend had the gravy in a bowl on the side. Not exactly sure why we received two different styles of servings, but luckily I liked the gravy and licked it up. Would I return to 900 Grayson? In a Berkeley minute, provided that crowds waiting out front aren't too big, which in this college town is never going to happen. I'm still very thankful I got the chance to experience this now local institution for their classic brunch. I've heard about this place since college. Funnily enough, I didn't come till post-college with some friends. I'm going to caveat my review with the fact that (a) I'm not a fried chicken fan (b) I have only eaten 2-3 fried chicken places in my recollection. I tried two things: Demon Lover and the Tom Boy. Demon Lover- 4/5. Had the waffle been crispier and thick (and not flat and wet), I'd have given this a 4.5/5. The fried chicken here tastes like the better version of GBC chicken strips (for all you OG Cal bears, you'll know what I'm referencing). I wanted to be impressed with the chicken but I feel like these were just slightly crispier, slightly browner, and bigger chunks of the GBC Chicken strips. Nevertheless, the crunch hit the spot and the batter to meat ratio was pretty good. Tom Boy- 3.5/5. Honestly, I ordered this so we wouldn't be silly and have two people eating the same thing. But, I will say, this paled in comparison to the Demon Lover. It had chunky beef hash but not something I particularly enjoyed. The chicken was fried perfectly and seasoned well. Waffle was crispy! They have this thing called a Hobbit lunch with Tolkien-themed food fare such as Middle-Earth Salad, Arkenstone Soup, the Gandalf Burger, and a tuna steak known as The Gollum. But rest assured, despite the Lord of the Rings fanaticism, this restaurant is all about the food. And by the way, their portions are definitely not hobbit-sized. Per their website "dinner service will be offered at a later date" but I read somewhere that since they are in a mixed-use commercial and residential area, the Orc-like residents nearby and the Goblins at the Berkeley Planning Department did not approve. Guess you can't say "winner, winner, chicken dinner", just yet. Now the only reason I come here is for "my precious" chicken and waffles that they call the Demon Lover. Again, I have no idea why they call this the Demon Lover because there is nothing demonic about it other than it being devilishly tasty. Maybe it's so good that Sméagol would approve? And despite it being covered in a spicy buttermilk batter, it's not like it will cause your eye of Sauron to burn 3 hours later. I swear, when I first had chicken and waffles at Roscoe's growing up as a kid in 1980s Los Angeles, I thought wow, this is some innovative fusion. Sweet and savory. Mmm! Mmm! Since then, it seems like everyone has jumped on the chicken and waffles gravy train from fancy pants Bouchon by Thomas Keller to low-budget IHOP. But I must say 900 Grayson's take is the best in the East Bay... ahem, Northern California. Now the Demon Lover consists of natural chicken paillard. Paillard is just a French-term that sounds ostensibly fancier than it is. It just means meat that is pounded flat. The thin chicken is then crusted with a delicious spicy buttermilk batter and it is served with a buttermilk waffle with your choice of old-fashioned gravy or Vermont maple syrup. For $2 more you can pimp your Demon Lover like a BO$$ by getting both the really creamy gravy and sweet maple syrup. I highly recommend you do this to get the best oralgasm taste sensation in your mouth. Due to its popularity, 900 Grayson can become a cluster-frodo, especially on Saturdays. My suggestion? Call ahead and order take-out. Then drive 5 minutes due north to the dog- and people-friendly Fieldwork Brewing Company and knock the Demon Lover back with some awesome beers. You can thank me later. 5 Stars despite the following cons: * There is an outdoor patio, but sadly, it is not dog-friendly. It's sad to say that I had to rewrite a review after my great experience last time of a 5, so after today's experience of probably a 2- it's an average of 3.5 stars. The carafe basically filled both our small cups with a little left for maybe half another glass, so we emptied it. One of the guys took our empty carafe. We thought he was refilling it, but noooo that wasn't the case. It never came back. Cant believe we waited 40 minutes before our food came!!! What took me off the edge was that another table, who were seated AFTER WE ORDERED, got their demon lover before we did. At this point I know I looked aggrevated, but no one ever checked up on us or uodated us on our food. Instead, we had to ask for water AGAIN, which for some reason was so hard to get. The chicken was not crispy today, it was a little dry, so I had to drench it in sauce. Good thing the sauces were good as usual. The burger was also a little dry eventhough we got it medium. It could've been because we asked for bbq sauce on the side. That was also a better idea because we didn't even like the bbq sauce. It had a strange sour taste to it (not like we are use to). Then to top it off, the fries were oily and soggy. We didn't end up getting a refill on water until we were basically done eating because we asked for the bill and WATER at the same time. I was SOOO DISAPPOINTED! Not only was the service bad, but the food did not do any justice either. We paid and left. I also tried the Tom Boy, and it was yummy too! You really get the Fuji Apple taste from it. Perfect combo of sweet and savory. It costs extra if you decide to get both gravy and maple syrup. The fried chicken is absolutely delicious! It was one of the best fried chickens I've had in a while. It was tender, crispy, and boneless! The gravy was also delicious! It went well with everything. The waffle, however, was too thin and seemed cheaply made. It tasted like one of the frozen waffles you put into your toaster for a few minutes. I expected more since the dish costs around $15+ The Vermont maple syrup was okay but nothing special.
