i was just searching the web for good burgers to eat around me and this place was listed as a go to place. well my wife and I stopped in and was a little nervous because of the rock climbing place was right next to it and I was concerned about people walking barefooted in front of me as I ate well that's just me. so I went ahead a ordered the basic burger and took the other vision out of my mind. the place to eat is small but we were there at around 2 so we had a place to eat. they have a good menu and the prices are reasonable. the burger came in and BAM good stuff. we will return for the pizza. the place was clean and even the restroom was clean. the service was good. if you looking for a different type of spot to eat we'll try this and the food will not disappoint you.

I was looking for a place to dine in this area of town with a friend, and this popped up as an option. Thought I would try it out. Imagine my surprise when I arrived, to learn that this place is actually a small open cafe inside of a rock climbing facility. Despite that, we decided to stay and give it a try. The menu lists an array of burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas along with flavored teas. They're some unique and tasty sounding combinations. Also present is a coffee bar for your espresso needs. At the counter, I ordered a burger with goat cheese, arugula, bacon, and bacon jam. It sounded like an interesting combination. Went with the salad instead of fries for my side. You get a choice of either. The burger itself was pretty good though on the small size. The bun really stood out because it looked almost like a biscuit crossed with an English muffin. I realized they must make their buns out of bread they use for pizza dough. While on the denser side, it worked pretty well with the burger patty and toppings. The salad was fresh and light, similar to a Greek salad. It was kinda fun watching the climbers do their thing. While we were dining, several other patrons in office work attire came in and also ordered from the cafe to dine in, with little interest in the rock climbing. So I guess we're not the only ones who came here for the food.

Why 3 stars? Because our food was okay but it's nice to have a legitimate restaurant inside of a rock climbing studio. --- --- --- Most rock climbing studios probably don't even have a cafe in them, and if they did, they certainly wouldn't be a destination restaurant. When we moved to the area, I bookmarked all highly rated restaurants in the area and this was one of them. It wasn't until I seriously considered going that I found out where it was located. So while I was pretty excited to eat from such a unique place, I was a bit disappointed that everything was fairly average. I ordered the farmhouse burger and my wife went with the Italian pizza. Neither was bad but neither was impressive enough for me to feel like I ever needed to visit again. Unless, of course, we are at the rock climbing studio and work up an appetite.

So, my first time was so good, I had to return ASAP! Burger overload, ready set go! I return a week or so later, same fabulous burger, same side salad filled with loads of fresh cheese & better than iceberg REAL nutritional lettuce. This time I try the balsamic dressing though, OH MY, talk about top notch restaurant quality bursting tangy, tart, sweet, flavor. Wow, I could just eat the dressing alone. Needless to say just like the first time I devoured every bite of that burger & salad. Just so satisfying. And this time I was able to meet a new server, Melanie, she was amazing & she's a Mel too, double plus. The cook which you can actually see from the ordering counter sends a nice smile from the back also. Pretty sure I'll be a new regular here! FYI don't forget your tip money, they deserve it. Excellent restaurant!

Burger with a side of fries plus extra cost to change the type of fries. What did I get? 8 tater tots. 8. Is this really the size of a side plus the extra paid to upgrade the type of fry? I'm not usually the one to complain about portion sizes but this is quite a rip off. We all know very well the cost of potatoes and the cost of a bag of frozen potato. A tad cheap on their end. Also ordered sweet potato fries and this was more of what I expected the size of a side being. Chicken salad, wasn't expecting anything fancy here. Chicken wasn't dry so that's a perk. As for the quantity, I guess this is how they make money too. This looks like a salad I make at home on a daily and it cost me 1/8 the price. Granted I'm paying for it to be made for me and packaging supplies. Overall, the food wasn't bad, it was moreso the quantity to price ratio. I shouldn't have needed to spend $40 here to be satisfied for one meal. Especially if there was nothing special to it. I'm all about spending $25 on a fancy burger or $300 on tiny portions of fancy for but I'm not about spending a lot on an average Joe.

We have the rock climbing gym membership, and we grab a bite to eat here after our climbs regularly. Everything we have ordered from the menu has been awesome, and their pizza is by far the best in the area. My husband is a fan of the buffalo chicken and bacon with blue cheese, and I love the red, white, and green. My favorite burger so far is the classic. The use of housemade English muffins instead of traditional buns is the best. Fries are always nice and crispy. It's a small cafe, and service is always great. Ambiance is laid-back, and it's fun to observe other climbers while you eat.

Yes, it is inside of a rock climbing gym. This place makes a mean burger! The farmhouse burger was made to perfection and was an explosion of flavors. Nothing was too overwhelming so it was great. I got the Cajun fries, I'd probably go with plain fries next time, because I couldn't finish them all with the seasoning on it due to how much the burger stuffed me. I got a pizza to go, WOW! You can taste the freshness of the pizza! All of the ingredients taste fresh! Even if you're not into rock climbing, visit the cafe like I did for lunch! It's worth it!

We heard about this place from watching a review from The Daytripper. My husband and I made it out that way a couple weeks ago and it definitely lived up to the hype! We both got the Avocado Burger with Fries and they did not disappoint. The rock climbing wall was a bit odd to be inside of a café or is it the other way around??? We would probably try it out again one day if we're up in the area.

Of course I read YELP before we went. Was looking for pizza and found this spot. It was very good as the reviews have said. Good for kids too. Had a bon mi taco which I could have had as a sandwich. Made with pork belly it was really tasty. Had a pizza as well and was made to order( rolled dough out when ordered). Made with fresh mozzarella and was thin and very hot when came to the table. Even though you order at a counter the staff was attentive and I believe the owner stopped by to check on us. Tacos, pizza 9", 2 drinks and fries was 24 bucks. Not bad and will definitely go back. Went to 5.ate cafe inside inspire rock gym and ordered the banh mi and garlic fries. If anyone has thought twice about going there because it's inside a rock gym turn around and go now!!! Hands down best banh mi I have ever had. The pork belly really sets off the sandwich. I don't think i can ever look at a traditional banh mi again. Also talked to charlie about a few other things that he is serving that are not currently on the menu. Peppercorn burger sounds awesome. Can't wait to try the pizza either. 5.ate cafe will definitely be a regular grub spot. read more

Best burgers in Houston! My boyfriend and I tried all the burgers and we love all of them! We're regulars here so we always get the same hueco tank and garlic butter but sometimes we switch it up for the farmhouse. The burgers are so flavorful and juicy. Went there with co workers an friends an i first thought it was a rock climbing place never thought it would be a hidden gem. So to say an say again this place is the BEST of Vietnamese ban mi is the BOMB i cannot begin to tell you it is a new edition of the original Ban mi which you get this sandwhich that looks like little but which is good (less bread ) but dont let it fool you hits you like ( Stop eating at these other Vietnamese sandwhich shops, you have been missing out). The pulled pork ( not the flat long pork like oringinal ban mi) melts right in your mouth an the dressing blends very well with pickled radish. My friends got the farmhouse an at first i thought it looked wierd but when the guys can finish the sandwhich an not all there frys like they usual in a meal well then that is something to find out about. I loved the environment an hip style an modern decor which was cool an alive feeling. The staff is awesome there an check to see if everything is good which we were to busy stuffing our face,lol. I would recommend to anyone that thought original ban mi was good or anyone else that like GREAT GREAT FOOD. read more

Went with a couple other people and was a bit surprised of it's actual location but was VERY impressed with the staff and the quality of food. We were all impressed! Stopped in for a burger to go. Had heard great things and the reviews here are awesome. We ordered a Bacon Avocado Butter Burger. It took about 20 minutes, which seemed a bit long. The price at more than $11 also seem a bit steep. However, once we got home, we dug in and were very pleased. The fresh english muffin and fresh veggies complimented a perfectly crafted burger. We will be back for more and look forward to trying more of the menu. read more

I have literally not complaints about this place. I had the farmhouse burger with the garlic fries and wow it was amazing. It's in a sort of weird place but don't be afraid go on in. The beef is all ground in house every day and the bread for the bun seemed to be a similar story. The garlic fries I was worried that they were going to have too much garlic but they didn't it was perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. I will be going back here! read more

I got the classic burger and I have to say I was impressed. The burger had the right amount of flavor with the sauce. The English muffin bun really works well with the burger. The veggies in the burger taste really fresh including the pickles. The patty was a good size patty as expected. The staff were definitely friendly and the chef (I assume) actually passed out fresh powdered sugar Beignets for us to try while we were eating. read more

I was actually looking for a new coffee joint when I found this place on yelp. They serve ice coffee, but that is not what you need to come for. You need to come here for the burgers and fries. Holy cow. I have looked for a good burger place, and we have found it. I tried the farmhouse burger with garlic fries and this might be the best burger I have ever eaten. I am seriously blown away. You owe it to yourself to go try this place. It is fun to sit and watch the people climbing while you are wolfing down something that you can feel clogging your arteries. Well done! read more

To get right to the point. I love a good burger and the farmhouse burger is as good as you are going to get in Houston. We tried the Italian pizza and it was extremely good. A little weird going into a rock climbing place to have lunch, but the food is really good. Good and polite service topped off a good eating experience. If back in the area, would eat there again in a heartbeat. read more

Got the shar-warma burger togo. Very tasty! The patty was perfectly seasoned, juicy, and cooked to order (medium rare) with great beefy flavor. Sauces were spot on and the veggies very fresh and crisp. The homemade bun had great texture and held everything together well. I will definitely be back to try the pizzas and banh-mi sandwiches. Exceptional food, friendly staff, great value! If this place were in midtown they'd be killing it, but they are in a climbing gym, which is great for me since I climb here and often don't have time to eat after work. You wouldn't expect to find a cafe of this caliber in a climbing gym. Even if you aren't into climbing, this place is worth checking out. All of the food is great, but my favorite is the ratatouille pizza. Charles, the head chef is gifted with foods. I give this place my highest recommendation! read more

OMG! My wife and I stopped here on a Saturday night and almost did not go inside as the parking lot was so full we just barely were able to find a parking space. That would have been a huge error as they were having a birthday rock climbing party inside and getting to the front of the food line was no problem. We had the Farmhouse burger and the Classic Cheeseburger (both awesome) and Garlic Butter French Fries!!!!!!!!! We were planning our next trip on the walk back to the car. read more

Yes. Simply yes. Order whatever you want; it's likely to be amazing. Whatever you get, just know you must come back another time to get a burger, or if you got a burger, a pizza. Do you like spicy food? If so, Charlie, the owner and operator can accommodate. Some of the best spiced-up dishes I've ever enjoyed we're courtesy of Charlie and his team. Located as the cafe inside a rock climbing gym you may assume it's Cafe food... don't make that mistake. It's an unassuming gem. read more

I got a hamburger the size of my head and it was well seasoned. The mash it up right in front of you and cook it fresh! The fries were off the chain! I also noticed they made little homemade personal pizzas too. I'm sure they are good. I'm gonna have to go back to this place soon! Oh... and I urge you to try their tea. It is inside the lobby of the Inspire Rock. You do not have to be a member of the rock climbing to eat here though. I have had a couple of different burgers, the PBJ (pork belly and jalapeno sandwich) and a pizza. Everything was great. It's neat to sit and eat and watch the rock climbers practice. read more

We are a chef driven stone oven pizza shop with gourmet burgers, sandwiches and a full service coffee bar. We have scratch made sauces, Italian style sourdough crust, fresh ground beef and slow roasted pork belly. We also carry Clean Sweets from a local Gluten Free bakery in the Heights!

History

Established in 2014.

Chef Charlie Williams moved from Savannah GA in 2013 to be part of Inspire Rock Climbing Center. Opening the 5 Ate Cafe as a stand alone restaurant inside Texas' largest climbing gym. Two years in Italy with the navy, ten years in slow cooked southern BBQ and two years working at a French bakery in Atlanta during college all contributed to his culinary interests.

Chef Charlie was the creative cooking force behind the 5.ATE Cafe. Yelp lists 5 Ate as Vegan. I don't see any way on the menu to determine which things are vegan. I'm sure the salads are. The only thing I see listed as being vegan is a specific cheese. Anyone know where to find more info?

FYI: Yelp! lists 5.Ate as Pizza and Burgers, not vegan. 5.Ate may be able to cobble something vegan together (substitute a veggie patty for beef), but there is nothing on the menu that is specifically vegan. Give them a call.

Sunday's pork chop dinner for $19 is regularly priced at $42, for example. (Please see my photo of the daily specials board.) That said, this former bordello does have some downsides, which I need to mention: First, it is too loud -- nothing sound-absorbing in the place, and the jazz music recording was turned up the day we were there. This caused communication problems with the waiter, who misheard me, and I really couldn't hear what he was saying. This is not an intimate spot for deep conversations. Second, parking is a challenge. No parking lot. There are some spaces across the street along the railroad tracks, but not enough. I parked on the other side of the tracks and hiked over the rails, but that is a little dangerous. There are some $ 5-a-day parking lots up the road. Is the pork chop better than Perry's? I liked the mashed potatoes, and the meat was properly prepared for sure, but the seasoning was not exactly right for me -- I think they added cinnamon, though my wife thinks it was allspice, and a hint of sugar. An East Texas sort of flavor--I prefer Perry's. But a close second for sure. Allec, I can't find your card, so I know I am spelling your name wrong, but you were a great waiter, and so I am giving this shack a 5.

I was so full from the gyro that I only ate one of the potatoes but didn't think it was very lemony at all. Customer service was excellent the entire time and they will even come to your table and take your plate away as if they are full service, which they aren't . I also ordered a slice of coconut cream pie, or at least that's what they said it was. It had no cream in it and appeared to be a coconut custard pie not that different than the one I make at home. It was delicious as well.

The noise level was moderate throughout our stay such that one could easily carry on a conversation with table mates without having to scream. Almost all patrons were nicely dressed. Since this is a Michelin acknowledged restaurant two years in a row, we were expecting uniqueness and we were not disappointed. That said, food was very good, but I would not rate it as spectacular. The blue fin tuna tostados were delightful and hands down the best dish we had. Ceviche mixto was excellent with a just a hint of heat. I would order these two appetizer dishes again. Main courses consisted of duck 2 ways, redfish with green mole and risotto, spring cavatelli, and grilled shrimp & pork belly. All were delicious and uniquely tasty with the exception of the duck. Mind you, I really like duck and the sliced portions were excellent and perfectly seasoned and moist, but the pate-like accompaniment was not that good, plus the mole sauce was not what I was expecting. Table sides of Brussels sprouts and fried cauliflower were good but nothing special. The Eton Mess with strawberries was simply delicious. Would I go back? Maybe, but not anytime soon.

My friend stays near Washington and we wanted a quick dinner before flying out so we put in an order through yelp for pickup. An e-mail told us the food would be ready anywhere from 10-30 minutes so we left about 15 minutes after we placed the order. While we were driving we got a call from an outside party stating that they couldn't reach the restaurant and couldn't guarantee that the restaurant received our order. When we got there I asked them and luckily they were in the process of finishing up the order so I waited on the side. We ordered the chicken pupu plate and the longislog (flipino sausage) rice plate which came with an egg roll and garlic rice. They were both pretty good and I loved the flavorful garlic rice. I used to eat flip n patties a lot back in the day when they were in the parking lot of Marquis and I remember their egg rolls being larger than they are now but they were still good. Overall, the food here is solid and unique because there isn't much filipino food in Houston. I definitely would order from them again if I'm hanging out at Lincoln, however, we ended up waiting a total of 45-50 minutes for our food from the time of order and that's a little long for a pick-up order. read more

I would like to put this little guy next to my cheek to nuzzle it; little soft bun, perfectly wrapped up little package of quality goodness. Cute ass little toothpick with a burger flag on it, you left me craving some more. Dare I say In-n-Out but better? Fries are super crispy, warm crunchy compliment to the cutest burger I've ever seen. The cafe inside this rock climbing gym is pretty sweet. You will enjoy the food here. It does take some time for the food to get to because they hand make it fresh per order. I enjoyed the burger/ salad combo which I definitely would drive back just for this! The only Con I have for this place is they do not wipe down when guest leave. They just let the dirty table sitting there for 30 to 45 mins or until somebody asked them to clean the table. read more
