First off, I've never been to 4th Ave Pub on a weekend, so I don't really know how crazy it gets. I've heard it's bananas, which means I will probably never go. That said, this is one of the few bars that I visit regularly that is outside of my comfort zone in Carroll Gardens. It is nicely sized, simply decorated, and generally welcoming. I've had a few different bartenders and they've each been extremely cool. Same with the owners, who seem to put it a lot of time in the place. The main reason to go is the beer selection. They have 24 taps, most of which are legit craft beers. They don't worry about having the usual suspects on tap, so don't plan on beering it up if you're looking for four pints of Stella. I give them a lot of respect this. Keep in mind that I have Boat, Abilene, and Brooklyn Social within walking distance, so the fact that I hike it over to 4th Ave Pub says a lot. They have a killer backyard. If you like drinking al fresco and are still sad about the reduction of backyard spaces on Smith, this alone might make it worth the trip. Prices are very fair for the craft beers. Instead of serving everything in a pint glass and upping the prices, they serve beers in appropriate glassware and price it accordingly. This is also useful if you don't pay attention to alcohol content, as many of those micros are hella strong. Highly recommended. read more

My first 5-star review! I agree with previous Yelpers that 4th Avenue Pub can do no wrong. This is more than just my local - it's the best beer bar I've been to! 4th has probably 25 excellent beers on tap at any given time, and they are ALWAYS changing! Love it! If you, too, love hard-to-find microbrews and full-flavored Belgians (on draft!!), this is the place for you. The beer menu cards have lots of info about each beer for all you beer nerds (incl. ABV & IBU), and the bartenders are happy to give you a try of beer you're curious about (in adorable 2" steins!). They are REALLY friendly, there's free popcorn (self-serve out of a movie theater popcorn box), an excellent garden out back, and they even allow you to bring your dog!! I'd been dying to go here for a while. The Yelp reviews have generally been great for this place. I wasn't disappointed. There are many great bars in Brooklyn that have fairly unique options on tap. In that sense, the 4th Avenue Pub is pretty typical. They've got great beer selections. What separates the 4th Avenue Pub from some of the other pubs with great beer is the price. From 4-8pm on a Friday, I drank all draft beers for 4 bucks each. Some of the great beer bars in the immediate area don't come close to this price. In other bars, you'll pay 6 bucks minimum each, because of the quality of the selection. Here, it's like they know you can get this beer anywhere, so they entice you with cheaper beer for 4 hours and free popcorn. The place is bumpin' with beer lovers, and the music isn't too loud that you can't hear your friend talking to you. The booths are key, and you can easily squeeze 6 people into them. Probably more if you're a little person, like Dustin Pedroia or Calista Flockhart. There's no food here, but they do have menus for ordering in. I'll be back, this place is a chill afterwork option that ends up being an all night option. read more

4th Ave Pub, I love you. This bar has one of the best happy hours around. Two dollars off all drinks until 8pm on weekdays means good times for cheap. The interior is nothing fancy, but it's cozy and there are plenty of places to sit.The beer selection is huge and they'll let you taste beers before you decide what to order. One of the best things about this place is the popcorn machine! Seriously it's like free all-you-can-eat popcorn here, and they even have Old Bay seasoning that you can sprinkle on top of your basket of popped yumminess. It's so addictive. I had been here a couple times before, so I suggested meeting here for a drink last night with a friend. The popcorn machine was out of order :( but everything else was ok. The bartender was quite nice to us, and as always the beer selection was great. The hefeweisen I had was delicious. My only issue was that since it was so small and crowded, we could barely hear each other over the loud (and not so great) music. In the past I had always sat outside in the back which was fine. I think 4th ave pub is great if you want to meet up with a bunch of people and they're coming from different parts of BK or even Manhattan. This bar is nothing short of amazing. With 2fers for happy hour, always free popcorn (self serve). They used to have free BBQs on the patio over the summer but the neighbors weren't fans. The first time I went to this place, I saw the lineup of taps and nearly fainted, it's just unreal. They love their local brewers and will always have them on tap, not to mention micro's from all over the country, and several imports. The place has the local-yocal bar feel and thats the experience you'll have. Everyone there is super friendly including pets. (Yes, they are pet friendly so you may see the occasional beagle drinking beer right along with you.) During the summer its perfect, sitting outside under the umbrellas, with walls covered with ivy, and some tree's providing some shade, its the perfect environment to enjoy a good brew. If your looking for a fun game while the beer takes control of your motor skills, watch the bug zapper over the summer and count how many big ones and how long it takes to zap em. It's always a kick hearing that big zap and watchin' that sucker cook. read more

I'm a sucker for bars that are not crowded, have a nice selection of beers that frat boys in college won't have a clue about, and just an overall unpretentious atmosphere. The 4th Avenue Pub fits this my sucker criteria. I've heard about this place from the lovely inter-web, and I always wanted to try and check it out, but I don't have good reasons to head over to Brooklyn...until my friend decided to park his car nearby. Perfect opportunity to have some brews before the trek home. First thing I noticed, besides not being crowded was the smell of a circus AKA the smell of fresh popcorn. As I sat around trying to find which beer I was going to try, I was tempted to get some popcorn - but we saw some guy just dig his hands in there like he was playing in a sandbox. Hmm...maybe next time. Free popcorn is a cool idea though. The beer selection is pretty good, I saw some favorites of mine on there, and some beers that I would love to try one day in the future. I decided to try Magic Hat #9 instead of Gaffel, Hoegaarden, Allagash, Blue Point, and the many other good brews. Other odds and ends, there is an outdoor seating area, and the bathrooms have chalkboards, another cool feature - especially when you are a bit buzzed and decide to read some of the comments. 4th Avenue Pub seems like a place I would love to check out over and over again if I am in the area to just relax and talk with friends. Best Beer Selection for Miles. Free popcorn with Old Bay seasoning! I wouldn't have come up with Old Bay seasoning on popcorn, but I'm damn glad someone did. They've got in the range of 20-30 beers on tap. The majority are microbrews and craft beer concoctions. The prices are a little north of average, but you get what you pay for. No crap beer here. They have a rotating stock of cask ales as well, with just one in stock at any time. Once it's out, you're out of luck. You really just aren't going to do better for breadth and depth of beer selections in this neighborhood. The liquor selection, for those of you looking for that, holds up just fine. But really, come here for the beer. And popcorn. This is another diamond in the rough. I don't tend to see it full all that often, so you'll most likely have room to spread out. It's a holy shrine for the pilgrims of good beer, and that's not everybody. The bartenders are fantastic, really great people every time I've been in. They tend to have indie movies on in the background. Just all around, classy and well done. They've also cleverly solved the bathroom graffiti problem by covering all the bathroom walls with chalkboard and supplying chalk. There's never the same thing on the walls. It's always hysterical and usually pretty intelligent, as far as graffiti goes. So the next time the Q randomly stops at Atlantic Pacific on your way home, dodge the train crowds for a bit, grab a pint, use the facilities and leave a message of wisdom for others to ponder on a bathroom wall. read more

Funny how much one's preferences can change with time--now that I've been in Brooklyn for almost two years, everything about my previous review is pretty much the reverse. I can't tell you when's the last time I went to Pac Standard (maybe I tired of the pricey wells or of my friend always wanting the terrible nachos), but I go to 4th Ave. more or less weekly, most often to wrap up my night when I want just 1 (or 2) more drinks, a little popcorn to soak it all up, and the company of the best crew of regulars and awesome bartenders I've encountered since moving here. Thank you, 4th Avenue Pub, for making my 24 birthday awesome! We had a large crew but managed to get a table right near the bar. The large beer selection and free popcorn are obviously a huge plus, but the real treat was the GREAT SERVICE. (shout to bartender Rachel!) The bar staff was so sweet and accomodating. They had unlimited patience for our antics, let us try as many beers as we wanted before purchasing, and offered a free round at the end of the night. Rachel really went above and beyond when we asked if they had Picklebacks (shot of whiskey and a shot of pickle juice if you are unfamiliar). They normally don't have them, but she sent the bar back out for a jar of pickles, then made us an amazing concoction of pickle juice and hot sauce. I went because I had read great reviews on Yelp and i like to try new beers. i got there before my party and sat at the bar. the pub is very welcoming and i felt like i could have hung out there by myself all night and not been uncomfortable. but my friends did come eventually and we all sat at the bar and tried many different beers all night, which the bartenders encouraged us to try a sip of before we picked. they have many beers draft & bottled beers at $5. AND they have free serve yourself popcorn available. mmm... there is plenty of room for a big crowd in the back, but i enjoyed sitting at the bar it had a very cozy feel and i liked the crowd that was there. i think if i lived closer this would be my neighborhood bar. read more

I came here with a group of friends last Friday night. The bartenders were oh-so-kind and obliged our request (i.e. demand) to put the gymnastics Olympic trials on TV. The atmosphere is chill, dark and dive-y. The bar wasn't very crowded for a Friday night, but it isn't near too many other bars, and a half full bar is a good thing to me. I am biased as to why I like this pub. First, it's just down the block from me (that's stumble home distance if need be). Second, I can bring my dog...who adores the attention he gets from everyone. He's an attention whore...he's working on that with his therapist but I digress. The great thing about this place is the beer selection and cozy neighborhood vibe. If Park Slope had a "Cheers" this would likely be it. The other cool thing they've done is allow food delivery rather than run a kitchen themselves...hence I can bring my pooch. It's great because I can order whatever I want from the neighborhood and am not limited to bar food. If you don't like dogs or are allergic (as one poor girl near my table was ...sorry sweetie) be forewarned. But otherwise, what a great place to hang with friends and neighbors alike! read more

The Short: Great American beer selection + Popcorn machine + outside seating = MUST GO! The Long: I can't remember how many times I've been to 4th Ave. Pub and I'm not saying that because of the alcohol. This is the first bar a ever went to in Brooklyn and it remains my favorite. For starters there is a popcorn machine that translates to fresh popcorn. AWESOME! The place itself is a medium sized bar with a nice outdoor seating area. There's even old arcade games converted into a table but you can still play them (not sure how to explain this so I apologize for the confusion). You can also write on the bathroom walls if you feel like touching chalk that has been handled by...others. The bartenders are awesome people. Every single one I have ever spoken with was amiable and kind and exactly what I would expect from a Brooklyn pub. Lastly but should probably firstly, the beer! The beer selection consists of about twenty something American beers and 10 or so imports. They change fairly regularly based on what season it is. Also the bartenders are incredibly helpful in aiding you to find a beer of your choice. I love beer but there are a ton of these American beers I've never tried. I have not had bad times here. Or at least, only bad times here. The overall scene -- very Park-Slope in the sense that it's largely a crowd people who have no idea how to operate without the overbearing eyes of everybody's watchful mother above and in the grave threatening spirit- and soul-devouring reprisals upon the slightest transgression -- is largely dull and mannered beyond too mannered. But that's not damnable. It means bring friends. On another plus, they do have a good beer selection, and it rotates. Which is fine, but it's not the only bar in Brooklyn or the area that does so. So it's a plus-meh. On another plus, they have Old Bay for their popcorn. For this alone, they were spared one star. Mainly, the bar is meh. Nothing spectacular, but it's fine for the boring-that-is-the-area-and-its-denizens. But why only two stars?: on a visit, I heard a bartender discussing the finer points of whiskey. Bourbon, mainly, and his fact was that it had to come from a specific region in Kentucky. (Strike one.) it could be made from almost anything (strike two). Oh, and that rye was strictly Canadian (strike three - where was this guy transported from, 1957?). Nothing irks me more than a bartender who doesn't know his liquor. Yay! What a great bar! I walked in here two years ago without knowing I would end up in the hood later-on. Now that I am a local, I really enjoy going here regularly. I was able to convince a lot of my friends of this pub, as well - we had so many good times at the 4th Ave. This is an absolute hotspot for BEER LOVERS! They have an awesome selection. My favorite: The Liefmans, a Belgian sour ale. For some reason they didn't have it when I was there 2 weeks ago but I really hope to see it on the menu soon again. They have outdoor seating, which can become kinda smoked up when all of the smokers decide to light their cigarettes at once. Other than that it's a huge outside garden-type of area with wooden benches and a ton of drunkards. And you can always convince me with free popcorn and that old school popcorn machine! Fantastic beer selection. Constantly changing and they really strive to maintain a good balance of styles (not 15 IPA's like some places). On occasions when I have been there during quiet hours, the bartenders have been friendly and chatty. Recently I was there during a busy time and the bartender even managed to have a bit of a dialogue going with me. Not their fault, but it really does get zoo-ish in here right before select events at Barclays.. the crowd can be very fratty, which just doesn't fit the usual vibe at all. The 4th Ave Pub rocks -- it's on the way home from many Park Slope destinations for me and my girlfriend, it has free popcorn (and Old Bay seasoning, yeah!), a pretty great selection of beers and excellent bar staff. (Hi, Pablo!) The vibe is pretty comfortable: there's your normal mix of Brooklynites without things getting too hipsterish, Park-Slopey, or slick. I brought a bunch of people here for a birthday pub night and everyone fit in well. It's also a pretty fun place to take a favored girl or guy, since it's energetic and close without being completely overwhelming. Definitely not a quiet date place, though. More like a let's-have-a-couple-of-pints-and-see-what-happens place. There's also a back patio area now that the weather is better. I love 4th Ave Pub, we need more places like this! read more

4th Ave Pub used to be literally one door down from my apartment and I think its for the best that I moved :) What an awesome (and constantly rotating) selection of beers. There are always awesome beer events with totally unique (super rare) or limited release beers from different craft breweries around the country. Kirk (the owner) brews himself and made an awesome Route 66 beer at Beer Camp (Sierra Nevada). I wish they would start making that beer...I think I went every day they had it on draft (not many...like 3 it ran out pretty quick). Great back patio for groups. Love it here. read more
