Gritty on the outside and dark on the inside, 4th Ave Pub may be a little off the beaten path but is oh so chill and fun. Inside sweet beer smells seep from the picnic style tables. It's dark cool and laid back. Free popcorn compliment their vast beer selection and you can even bring your doggie to their outdoor patio. New Favorite Bar. NFB. There are plenty of reasons to give this bar 3 stars. I can see it getting cramped in the front by the actual bar, but there is a decent amount of space and seating in the back, for conversation, for life, for living, for drinking, for eating, for conversation, for life, etc. Here's why five star status: Chalkboard bathrooms. I wrote, "2 girls, 1 cup, 4000 hilarious reactions". A really solid list of beers on draft and bottled, lots of full bodied ales that really kick my ass, from Pleasantville to Belgium. Terrific music, and that's coming from the owner's iPod. Easygoing style, you pull up a stool, awkwardly crane your neck to one of the two tvs perched high above the bar, and watch in silence. Happy hour is 2 dollars off everything, which means you should try their more expensive beers while still saving money for the kids. A Specials song was playing, and I was wearing a Specials shirt. Which was kind of awkward I guess. Here was my experience which led me to five stars though: the bartender, a lovely woman Nicole, she didn't want to DJ, too modest of course. I suggested she put in my iPod, I set it to a mix I made a few weeks ago. The place was digging it (there was dancing, to the Pipettes of course), but I had a Braid song thrown in there, and this dude who ends up wanting to jam, he's like, I haven't heard a Braid song in a bar, much less in the past 5 years anyway. And we will raise goblets of rock. This is musical bonding. What bar would actually let you just put your iPod on? What chops, what balls, what fervor. AVOID at all costs. The worst bar in all of Brooklyn. Rude staff who smoke cigarettes behind the bar during business hours and when customers complain, they take your beers away and kick you out. I saw cockroaches on the popcorn too. There are tons of other places to drink in the neighborhood. Don't waste your time or money. read more

Very confused about the high reviews. I left the bar after about only five minutes on a Thursday night due to how horrendously rude the bartender was. I wish I had caught his name to add on this review but honestly couldn't leave fast enough. He had a thick beard, about as much about him as I want to remember. The bar was muggy, loud, and crowded. My friend and I were attempting to close our tab and gestured for the check. The bearded bartender sees us and ignores us. We wave again for his attention and he comes straight to us aggressively shouting, "NO, DON'T DO THAT. I'm a professional. Don't wave at me, I'm a professional." No sir, apparently you are not. Professionals don't yell at their customers and throw a tantrum. We were very caught off guard by this hostility and needless to say, have zero plans on ever returning. read more

I live quite close, so I was happy to see something other than a tire store open on this up-and-coming stretch of 4th Avenue. The first few weeks it was alarmingly dead and so dimly lit that I could never tell if they were slinging beers or if something more illicit was going on. There would only be a few people inside, despite a sign promising 24 beers on tap and 24 bottled beers, and a 2-for-1 happy hour from 4 to 8 PM every day. Then they turned on a few lights and people started to show. And the people did not look like the fratboy jackoffs from Cherry Tree (across the street). So I finally patronized with a girlfriend on Saturday night and I was quite pleased. Nice bartender, great beer selection, solid music and even free popcorn. Great place to take a serious beer drinker, especially for that happy hour special. It's not the most exciting decor (dark wood, exposed brick and candles) but it's functional, with a long bar and smaller tables in the front, and larger low tables in the back for groups. And I heard rumors that they have a back garden, so I'll want to check it out even more in the spring. read more

4th Avenue Pub is my favorite place to get free popcorn. I don't know if I know any other place that gives free popcorn, but this is easily my favorite. I've spent many of happy hours, birthday parties, bar crawls, and end of the night stops that I shouldn't have done, at 4th ave Pub. It's pretty consistent. First off you have a large selection of beer. Now, while some places have tons of options, half of them will be of the same type of beer. Not here. It's a pretty good mix of brews, all varying in type. I enjoy writing cryptic and odd messages on the chalk wall bathroom. My favorite is to ease drop on a neighboring conversation and then proceed to the bathroom, to write something in relation on the wall. Messing with strangers is fun. Yes, Ted is sleeping with his secretary. The bartenders are pleasant and friendly. They know how to make basic drinks the proper way. I have to say though, I've never had a good share of buy backs, despite the fact I always tipped well here. Might just be their policy. There is a good sized back yard with lots of benches and picnic tables. Get a spot early, it gets packed if the weather is nice. Note though, the sun isn't out that much due to the angles of the buildings nearby. Lastly, and most importantly, there is free popcorn. Whether it's being eaten, thrown at someone, or used to plot your domination over the world, it's free and that can not be ignored. read more

4 stars on 4th Avenue. This bar gives even the pickiest lush a reason to visit. Roughly 25 tasty beers on draft and about 35-40 bottled beers to choose from. All beers range from about $4-$6 each. Everything from mainstream Bud and Heineken to lesser known micro brews like Allagash and Victory. Loses a star because the place gets really crowded early and makes for an annoying experience for people that prefer a bar where they can stretch their legs and get a drink without waiting 20 minutes.Plus they have a popcorn machine that offers patrons unlimited popcorn. read more

My cocktail was a little watered-down but it was also a little cheaper than normal. And the popcorn got better and better with each tray! This place on the border of Park Slope and Boeurum Hill... (Boerum Slope? Target Valley?) had about 25 drafts, 40 bottles, a cask now featuring Sixpoints Apollo Wheat, plus a nice selection of whiskys. There's technically a jukebox but Kevin the bartender usually puts on his ipod. He probably has better taste in music than you anyway. I came here on a Friday night, and there was room in the backyard. I'm from Manhattan--places there, on warm nights, they don't have room. They're packed. They're loud. They're about as chill as Tripoli during a civil upheaval. (ZING!) But here, there was room. It was busy, yet there was room. And there was chill-ness. We sat. We drank. It was pleasant. What more can you ask for, from an outdoors bar on a warm spring night? 4th Avenue Pub has every good facet of a Brooklyn neighborhood bar all wrapped up in one great subway-accessible package. The location makes it a great spot to meet up for a Brooklyn-bound happy hour or to meet friends coming in from Manhattan. Beer - There is always, ALWAYS something great on tap here and they frequently have brewery events with very rare pours on tap. Founder's Canadian Breakfast Stout and Kentucky Breakfast stout were on tap here at the same time if that tells you anything. You're more likely to find unicorn blood on a draught list than either of those the other 364 days of the year. Cocktails - Pretty damn good considering they're more well-known for their beer menu. If you're feelin fancy I recommend you seek your basil-infused pepper honeysuckle gin experiments elsewhere. Simple is key here. Ambiance - Very casual and very whatever-goes because it's not divey and not fancy either. You could come here to catch up with friends or come here for a first date/hookup/lolidunno with someone. The tables in back lend themselves to somethin' somethin.' Service - Never had a problem here with the service and they manage to keep up even when the place is really packed. If you're hungry South Brooklyn Pizza is nearby and you can order in Mexican from Oaxaca down the street. read more

This is a great bar for happy hour. The bar itself has a lot of personality, as do the bartenders that work here. They have lots of sass. Don't dare getting his attention during a crowded happy hour if you don't know what you want. The guy next to me got "yelled" at. It was funny to watch. The happy hour deal is $1 off all drinks, which is minimal but still a deal. The place was fairly quiet when I walked in around 6, but by 6:30 it was packed and loud and very, very busy. It quieted down a bit by 7:30-7:45 when much of the crowd headed over to the Barclay's Center for the evening's festivities. The pub is definitely in the perfect location for a pre-concert or pre-sporting event drink or two. The beer selection is vast, and there's a ton on tap. (Stay away from the wine, it wasn't good. But I should've known...) Beware: they do not serve food here, but you can bring in whatever you want or order from their big binder of delivery menus. Plus: The free popcorn is a great bar snack and they even offer up some old bay seasoning to spice up your life. ;) read more

Oh how I love 4th Ave Pub! More of a dive than Pacific Standard, it's perfect for a low key and very chill night. Plenty of seating with some booths that will fit groups of 6 and an absolutely gorgeous backyard with huge picnic tables. Amazing and varied selection of craft beers on tap which frequently rotate. For example: Smuttynose, Sly Fox, Founder's, Bell's, Delirium, and Lagunitas with many more. There's a huge craft bottle selection and there's always a cask too. EXCELLENT Beer selection. I'm a beer lover and this place has old and new favorites on tap and among their bottled selection. This is the place to bring your beer snob friends if you're in Boerum Hill or Park Slope. Friendly, knowledgeable staff make it even better. I'd give it 5 stars for early evenings and weeknights. 3 stars for weekend nights when all the youngsters crowd in and stick their asses in your face if you happen to have a booth. Two rival groups of young hipsters got in a fight for my group's booth when we exited during the Saturday night mating ritual scene. It was really something I'd expect to see in Williamsburg, and seemed quite out of place in the 4th Ave I've grown to enjoy during weekday early evenings. read more

Great beer selection and outdoor patio. Unfortunately the outdoor patio makes it very attractive to smokers. I don't think this can really be helped. On the one 60F+ day of Spring that we have had in NYC, I made sure to come out here and use the patio to soak up some rays before it got lousy again. (I'm glad I did. It's 40 and raining right now.) Every bartender i've talked to at this place has always been passionate, eager to discuss beers and find something to your taste. When I came on the weekend they were trying to drum up business with a $5 bloody mary special. It wasn't bad, bit heavy on the Old Bay -- but this last point makes it go perfectly well with the free popcorn that they offer. I would say that the thing I want improved most about this place is the condition of the patio. Sure, there's benches and tables, but there's also some busted looking planters that could use a little love. Just cause you're a little rock 'n' roll as a beer place, doesn't mean you can't grow some plants. :) On 4th Ave, I either go here, Mission Dolores, or to Pacific Standard if I don't care about being outside. Former two have pretty good outdoor areas, though Mission Dolores (I can't get over the name) is a bit more pricey. read more

This place is glorious. Very low-key, I've been here for two different happy hours and it never got too crazy. Not only that, but the 4th Avenue Pub seems to be 100% douchebag free. I know this is a rarity, especially in bars that have a beer list like 4th Ave.* The bartender was very friendly and lets you try beers first, rather than pay for something you absolutely hate. He helped steer me away from buying a whole pint of the Watermelon wheat beer they had. (We agreed it tasted like used bubble bath) Free popcorn! (I have nothing further to say on this. It speaks for itself.) The bartenders are friendly and attentive; we didn't have to wait long for our drinks. The atmosphere is really chill and it's a great place to just hang out with friends and talk. This is one of the better bars I've been to in BK, though I haven't been to all of them. The free popcorn is nice...though as you drink more you can get a little crazy with the salt. They always have some kind of movie playing and the bartenders are pretty well rounded and usually have some inside knowledge on a particular beer you might want to try. I know there's that saying never judge a book by its cover, well the same thing goes for beer. Don't judge it by its crazy name! I ordered some really lengthy named beer from Germany. Ready for this? Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. Say that 5 times fast. The beer was delicious and I had a nice ol' pint for $6. (Happy hour you get $1 off your drink of choice.) Not only is there a beer menu (duh) but they have a food binder! -- Which keeps a chunk of eateries from around the area that you can order from. But if you can't dish out $ for take-out, feel free to grab some delicious popcorn right in the bar. Seriously, every bar should have this. And don't forget to grab the Old Bay Seasoning that they so graciously supply. What more is there to say? Awesome beers, bartenders, service, crowds and they even have snacks! And if you want to experiment you don't have to commit--the extremely friendly bartenders will let you taste any brew you're curious about before you decide. My Wife and I went here this Thanksgiving weekend and had a great time. The place was hopping but didn't feel crushed by humanity. I love the free popcorn and that they keep it popping all night is terrific. The bartenders let us sample any beer we wanted in very fun little mugs like at Disney World. The beer selection was great and I found a new favorite Winter Warmer by Harpoon like drinking a pumpkin pie in a glass. HMMMMM. 4th Avenue Pub is the sort of place that just feels comfortable the first time you go, so deciding where to have my birthday party a few weeks ago was easy. When I went in a week or two beforehand and mentioned it to the staff, they were super-accommodating, and genuinely seemed like they wanted to make sure everything went well. And yeah, it did! It was most of my friends' first time visiting the place, and afterwards, everyone said they loved it and had a great time. If you like beer - the good kind - and like it cheap, this place is your new best friend. If you like house music and specialty cocktails, keep on walking. This place really highlights just about everything I love about Brooklyn, down to earth crowd, quality local brew for a great price, not overpoweringly crowded, very friendly staff, and free popcorn covered in old bay. Ok, maybe the popcorn isn't one of the reasons I love Brooklyn, but it certainly doesn't hurt. My only complaint is during the winter, when you can't use the great outdoor seating area in the back, there are just not enough tables to fit all the revelers. I love this place -- the candle lights, the brick wall, the (what looks like) fresh red paint. The seating here is pretty nice, too. I came here on a Sunday night, so I guess it could get cramped on a Friday or Saturday, but the ambiance is great. The bartender was incredibly nice -- really helpful when it came to deciding what we wanted to drink. He was eager to give us samples in these really cute mini beer mugs, and I settled on a light blackberry-type beer on draft -- can't remember what it was called, but the blackberry flavor was really subtle yet fragrant. My lovely had the Cigar City Brewing's Jai Alai IPA. He said it was really good, but honestly I can't stand IPAs because they're too hoppy. The beer selection is pretty comprehensive for beer on tap as well as bottled. If you are looking for a good wine list, this probably isn't the place, though -- they have about one type of each grape and that's about it. This is definitely a place I'd stop by if I were in the area again. Oh, and you can chalk in the bathroom and write messages! They even have free popcorn, too! read more

Self-serve popcorn, happy hour til 8p, what more can you want? I liked the chill atmosphere of 4th Avenue Pub. The garden, located in the rear, is amazingly romantic. Who would have thought that from the exterior? It's definitely a place to meet up with buddies or to go alone with your boo. I liked how they had the bathroom walls covered in chalk board. I guess it's a smart way to deter vandalism by giving people the permission to mark things up, temporarily. I thought it was a cute idea. As I sit here thinking about this place I marvel that I can even begin to give it anything less than 4 stars, but I must for one simple reason: Pacific Standard. See my review for this to get my general feelings on the spot and the context for this review. By all means 4th Avenue Pub is a great place, its beer list is long, filled with tough-to-find specialties and, most importantly, it's cheap. Cheap beer = more beer. No stars lost here by any means. The sole complaint I have with 4th Avenue Pub is the atmosphere, or lack of any real defining characteristics. Perhaps this is why it's clearly commerically successful, with the loud music and somewhat confined, dark space to boot. Unfortunately, I don't especially enjoy savoring a complex well-crafted beer in said environment. It's like drinking a bordeaux at a bacchanalia. Too bad. Definitely a good middle-ground, though, if you want to head out to a cheap place that won't let you forget it's a bar, while still providing a full offering of high-quailty craft beers. But, if you want a little more laid-back atmosphere, better lighting and strong slate of beers, head down the block to Pacific Standard. read more

Great little bar with an awesome ambience. I was going to a Nets game with my lady and we were looking for a place to have a couple drinks before the game. I found this place on Yelp and decided to check it out. They have a great selection of craft beers, probably one of the best I've seen in a while. I loved the exposed brick on the wall with all the different signs and it wasn't overly crowded, especially for a Friday night. They had a popcorn machine where you could take popcorn, but I was way too full to partake because I had just eaten dinner. I don't live in the area, but anytime I am, I will definitely come back to this place. read more

Wow. Wowie. Wowzers. I am... wowed. This bar is two things: abundant and amazing. It's my newest "find" and I've been high fiving myself all day because I am so awesome for picking that place to go to. The beer selection is INCREDIBLE. And when I say incredible - I don't mean they have every selection of crappy light beer on tap. No, I mean...Stone Old Guardian Barleywine (12% abv), Smuttynose IPA, Southhampton Lager, etc. I also don't mean that just because the beer selection is amazing the prices are not. No, that's what also makes this place so wow-worthy. At the end of the night I was happy, full of popcorn and yummy beer, and my wallet was far from empty. Add in the the brick walls with beer selections adorning them on multiple (updated daily) chalkboards and long wooden tables and you have the perfect place to enjoy a beer. A good beer. I guess it didn't hurt that all the regulars were pretty awesome too. I found my new favorite place in Brooklyn...and it was only a hop, skip, and a jump away from Atlantic Avenue this whole time! I can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can enjoy the outdoor area after a hard days work. It's time to start looking for apartments above this place.
