The new 1906 restaurant at Longwood Gardens is very nice. It has been expanded into a much larger space. Probably three times larger than the old space. There is now a very nice bar also. The décor and ambiance are attractive and what you would expect at Longwood Gardens. The service is excellent, as it always has been. However, the menu has become very limited and the prices have gone up quite a bit. Not only has the food selection been reduced, but also the drink selection. Especially the wine list. The food was good, but it took a while to choose an entree due to the limited selection at reasonable prices. There were some very appealing entrees, but prices were a bit too much. My wife and I have been here every year for the last 5 years during the holiday season and always had a great meal and a great experience. We were a bit disappointed with the new location due to the aforementioned reasons. Bottom line: the food is good but it's pricey. read more

This may have been the best dining experience of my adult life. Despite being sold lout during our seating, the staff was friendly and attentive. The menu offered a number of truly unique dishes, including bread in a flower pot to start. The meals exceeded our expectations; every bite was delicious. But, by far, the chocolate flower pot was a culinary masterpiece that would have elevated the entire experience to five stars even if the rest of the meal was lacking. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful restaurant. You won't be disappointed. read more

Great staff, really attentive and make sure you have a great experience. The bread is life changingly good, it's silly to be that excited about bread but honestly that alone is worth the visit. We just stopped by to get some mushroom soup and their flower pot dessert! Both were delicious. The restaurant itself is very pretty and classy, with lots of windows for sunlight to flood in. The mushroom soup was creamy and filled with flavor and the flower pot was beautifully presented. The flower pot had too much sweet cream for my taste (the "pot" is made out of sweet cream) but others in my party seemed to enjoy it. I haven't tried their entrees so I can't speak on their food, but if you're in the area it's worth checking out for a little treat! read more

Looooove this place! It's the perfect spot for dinner when touring Longwood Gardens. Lovely menu with quality food. Love their bread in a terracotta pot! They are creative with their garden themes which is perfect for a restaurant in the middle of the most beautiful gardens in PA. read more

The new space for this restaurant is beautiful- but the prices are very high. They are trying to give a fancier feeling to justify higher prices and I think this is why they changed up the menu completely as well. I will pay money for a great meal experience - but unfortunately I'm not sure the food was worth the prices in my opinion. We tried a lot- the mushroom pate, lobster beignets, the new vegan mushroom soup. For example this new soup is $18 and not even close to how good the soup was in the old location. This is beyond disappointing. They say they did this new soup because anyone who's vegan couldn't eat the last soup. But we would never get that vegan soup again. We also got the spaghetti with blue crab- which is different, a crab cake and the cheeseburger. The crab cake and cheeseburger were good. Our favorite for the snacks was the lobster beignets. Oh and our drink was beautiful and amazing- autumn brees. We asked to sit in the dining room and despite being pretty much empty they were only able to sit us in the lounge. Actually thank goodness- the dining room menu is different and even more expensive and we were not that impressed with the options. If I come back it will only be in the lounge when I'm in the mood for a crab cake or cheeseburger. What upsets me the most is that this new space is missing an outdoor space to eat. The last restaurant had a deck that we loved so much. We always prefer outdoor options so we will more likely gravitate to the naked olive going forward. They really must add a patio out front of the conservatory. All said though- we had a nice time and our service was great. Just disappointing if you want to sit outside and if you liked the old 1906 menu. read more

1906 really exceeded my expectations. We love long wood garden and visit multiple times a year and had never tried 1906 and always ate at the cafeteria style food court outside of 1906. Our server Meghan was fantastic. She made sure we were taken care of checked up on us just perfectly. We never felt like we had to look for her. We ordered the mushroom bloom which was to die for!! Please order this. I didn't see any pictures on yelp so I posted one myself. More people should try this. I had mushroom soup and the beet salad which were fantastic. Next time I'm definitely going to order one entree though. I had some of my mom's salmon and wow. I had never had a better cooked salmon in my life. Everything, veggies, sauces and garnishes were just so perfect. We ordered sorbet and creme brûlée for dessert. Creme brûlée was standard but the gingerbread cookies it came with were da BOMB. Sorbet was vanilla lavender flavor and comes in a round frozen bowl which is really cool so ice cream doesn't melt I can't wait to come back to this beautiful restaurant when it's warmer. 1906 Fine Dining - Maitake Mushroom - New American Near Me - Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

What a great place to start off a nice day in a botanical garden. The Longwood Gardens mushroom soup is an absolute must have. I have had many mushroom soup and they tend to get creamier and/or saltier the more you eat it. However, their soup has the perfect balance between cream and salt. They are also generous slices of mushrooms. The Seafood Nage with lobster tails was amazing. I am in love with a saffron broth that they used. The portion is also super generous. There were shrimps, scallop, mussels, and crab meat. The lobster tail was gigantic and super tasty. The duck crepe was also very good. It came with two pockets of crepes stuffed with duck and chanterelle mushrooms and cheese. What's not to like about it? The look small but super flavorful and filling. The flower pot was very cute. It came in an edible terra-cotta pot (made of chocolate?). I would rather have it be more fluffy mousse and cookie crumbles, but that was only superficial layer topped with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. The bottom was chocolate cake and ganache. The flowers (marigold and violets/pansies ) were edible. It's a must have at least for the experience. read more

5 overall stars for the experience, atmosphere, & the food. I did get a wine bottle drop on my foot though so that was painful. Anyways... I've been here before with my parents then my bf for our 5-year anni. I picked this one because I trust them to indulge our palette. Their cuisine, every single one, is a work of art and it tastes so good. I wish I could dine here everyday; I would be the happiest person in the world. I mean sometimes, the food is too pretty to dig into but then you do and you're so glad you did because the food tastes like heaven. Ok I'm having a hard time articulating this one because you just have to experience it yourself but my experience here is always a treat. They had the best gazpacho I've ever tasted but it may be something that disappears from the menu every now and then because this time, they didn't have it. Their ingredients are freshly harvested from their own organic gardens. If you're interested, you can actually walk around the veggie patch after your dining experience. I had these exotic-looking greens on an appetizer called "Walk in the Woods" and man, that crunchy-earthy-slightly-grassy taste was so unique! Oh and the presentation, hands down-- the best I've seen! They are very pricey but worth it if you're celebrating an extra special occasion. Never skip out on desserts!!! You will regret if you do. I wish I have more pictures but I was very hungry from the 3-hour drive so I had to forego the picture-takings. read more

This is the fine dining resurgent alongside the cafes at Longwood Gardens. It's situated with inside and outside areas that are enveloped by lush greenery and beautiful flowers. It is worth the splurge to top off the classy vide longwood gardens emits. The staff were so sweet and we had made a reservation on OpenTable for 6 pm on a Thursday. We were seated at a beautiful table with a fresh centerpiece and lemon basil on our napkins. Our server Natalie was all smiles and recommended the charcuterie platter and even brought me gluten free bread. The charcuterie platter had a cheddar, goat, and manchego cheese complete with dried fruits and sweetened nuts. And a pork-mushroom meat and two types of salami. And a delicious smear of hot mustard! We were in heaven. We split a bottle of the Argentina Malbec For entrees we got the Lobster Boubiollion (spell check) and my gf said it was a perfect temperature and the lobster tasked very fresh! Her only complaint was that she wished one more scallop on the plate (only comes with one). I ordered the Painted Hen- vegetarian and very very delicious! The mushroom was not only delicious but also so fun to eat! It's so cute!!! If you're at 1906, you must get the Chocolate Flower Pot for dessert! The splash of lavender ice cream was perfection. Your bill comes with a delicious piece of chocolate and dried fruit per person- satisfies that sweet tooth !! Thank you 1906 you made an amazing environment for a wonderful evening I will never forget! read more

Amazing place and amazing food in the Kennett Square area. Started off with the mushroom soup which was the best we had ever had with whole mushrooms and crispy shallots. The brioche buns were warm and fluffy. The maitake appetizer "chicken fried hen of the woods" was different, tasty but we wished we were provided with chopsticks to pick them up as they were delicate. The dessert of the citron tart even had finger lime caviar on it and tasted scrumptious. All the staff were wearing masks and the tables in the dining room were decently distanced. After checking out the beautiful Christmas display Longwood Gardens offered, my girlfriend and I took our mothers to 1906 for dinner. We could not have had a better experience between the food, the atmosphere, and the service. We arrived at 6:30 with no reservations, and after a short half hour wait, we were promptly seated outside on the covered deck. A lot of decks I have sat on in the winter in the past have been over heated and too hot or the direct opposite, but out here was cozy and comfortable. Our server, Natalie, was prompt, witty, experienced, well versed in the food she was serving, and had us laughing a number of times while providing amazing service. The homemade bread baked in a flower pot to take the shape of a mushroom was both clever and delicious. When offered seconds, I could not say no. I started with the Ceasar Salad which was nicely dressed and came with white anchovies - something I haven't had since Italy and honestly didn't know existed here. Think slightly fishier, more acidic, and flavorful and way less salty. Delicious. For the main course, I had the duck breast. Cooked perfectly medium rare per chef's suggestion, the skin was crisp and wonderfully salty, the meat was tender and almost had the flavor of high-end beef, the carrots and potatoes were nicely seasoned and a perfect accompaniment to the dish. Honestly, one of the more delicious entrees I've had in a long, long time. Busting at the seams, I contemplated how I was going to possibly fit dessert, but after seeing servers bring out some interesting ones, we ordered the flower pot. As you can see from the pictures, the buttercream frosting looked so much like an actual flower pot my mother screamed as I cut into it, thinking I was breaking the pot. Such a cool and unique idea. It tasted absolutely incredible, but I would order it 1000 times over just to hear that reaction again. This is fine dining. I have trouble understanding why this place has anything less than for stars. You pay for what you get. It is a bit pricey, yes, but the food and the experience was worth every penny we spent. I'm looking forward to when they reopen in the spring with a new menu so I can have another great day at Longwood followed by a dinner here. read more

Came here on a muggy Friday night for the last nights of the Christmas lights being up at Longwood. We debated between 1906 and the cafe, but I'm so glad we chose the restaurant. We were seated "outside" which was covered in a tarp and was very warm and cozy. Our server was FABULOUS, thank you Natalie for being so funny and attentive. The bread is served warm and in a flower pot to give it a fitting shape of a mushroom (Kenner square is the mushroom capital!) and our table had seconds. My butternut squash soup was sweet and had a frothy foam layer on top and superb. For entrees I tried my boyfriends duck which was perfectly crisp and the fat excellently rendered. I chose the salmon, which was cooked medium rare with the skin left on (my favorite). The real prize of the night was dessert.... the Christmas mousse came in a beautiful lighted glass lantern and the flower pot cake came with real flowers and an edible pot of buttercream. They tasted as wonderful as they looked - I normally don't get dessert. If you come here, get dessert. Please. Can't wait to come back in the springtime! read more

We took out of town friends to Longwood for dinner and to check out the new conservatory, however no one mentioned when we made our reservation that there was a private event and everything but the restaurant was closed, including the gift shop. After waiting 45 mins past our reservation time we were finally seated. The waiting area was packed with people waiting and the bar was full. After being seated our waitress was prompt and courteous quickly taking our orders. The menu is nothing compared to the old 1906, much more expensive and lacking in choices. The bread was excellent however the entrees were disappointing. The food lacked flavor, my spouse put the mushroom soup over the Wellington to give it flavor. We forgot to order the potatoes when we placed our initial order but ordered them shortly after. They arrived at the table after everyone had finished eating. The space is beautiful but the food was a major disappointment. We often took out of town friends to Longwood and 1906 but will be finding another restaurant nearby for the future. The new restaurant lacks the quaint feel of the old one and is totally missing the mark with the food. $75 for chicken is insane. Will think twice before returning. read more

Fancy looking restaurant, with creative food & excellent service, but the prices don't justify the lack of attention to detail. The napkin was decorated with a piece of twine and a wilted flower. Started the meal with complimentary warm bread that reminded us of popovers served in flower pots. Very similar to brioche bread. Delicious. Mocktails: melon cooler & blueberry nojito looked beautiful but tasted exactly like seltzer. The bottom bit of the blueberry drink tasted like purée blueberries. The hibiscus mule was way too sweet even after the accompanying lime was squeezed & added. We had to pour the other seltzer drinks into the mule to finish it. All 3 mocktails were not worth it. The maitake bloom had a beautiful presentation as it was served ontop of a white log. The green goddess dressing offered a much needed boost in flavor. Definitely worth trying for the uniqueness. The crab cake sandwich was accompanied by greens tossed in citrus vinaigrette. For a restaurant charging $28, I expected every greenery to be perfect, but we picked out several wilted black leaves. The orange dressing (saffron aioli) that accompanied the crab sandwich tasted exactly like mayo, so we scraped it off. Ahi tuna came with a radicchio, sun dried tomato, French green beans, olive slaw with Merlot vinaigrette that was heavily flavored with olives. You'll love this dish if you love olives. Tuna was served medium rare and needed the slaw for crunch & extra flavor. Potted chocolate pot was so beautiful & decorated with real flowers, with the outer pot made from ingredients similar to fondant. Inner chocolate mousse & cake was thick & tasty. Didn't taste any coffee in the coffee ganache. Vanilla ice cream was generic ice cream. Service was attentive. Overall a decent choice for a special occasion, but the lack of attention to detail with the wilted greens & the 3/3 mocktail misses change it from a 5/5 to a 3.5/5. We don't regret trying the restaurant. read more

As someone with reserved opinions but a foodie palate, phenomenal food, but priced accordingly. However, still a great treat for a birthday or other special occasion. Reservations have worked best. I cannot speak more highly of the gardens but...this restaurant was beyond disappointing. My husband and I attended a pre-fix dinner and opted for the wine pairing. The wine was more often than not served after the meal, it was intended to highlight. The mushroom soup was amazing!! If given the choice I would have stopped here and this would have been an amazing experience. However, everything from the second course on should have been skipped. I have had TV dinners that would blow the next two courses out of the water.the main course (a sirloin) was served Luke warm (at best) and if not for the Demi-glaze the meat would have been flavorless. The potato pieces were again cold and flavorless. For such an esteemed restaurant with a hefty price tag...I expected much more. I would not recommend and will not be returning. read more

My meal and my mom's meal at 1906 were phenomenal. They serve bread in flower pots which is a cute touch. For my starter I had the tempura fried Kennett Square mushrooms and I still dream about them. They came with an herby green goddess dressing and were perfectly tender with a thin crunchy coating. For dinner I had the duck breast with Brussels sprouts and lardons. The duck was perfectly cooked with a nice layer of crispy skin. The dishes were both well seasoned. My mom had the soup and steak. She said it was the best steak she had ever had! It came with a horseradish potatoes I think which was great paired with the perfectly cooked and super tender filet. I appreciated the variety of the wine list and enjoyed the Malbec I had. We finished with coffee which was also pleasant. Overall the food was great from start to finish. The restaurant is a tad pricey considering the ambiance and portion sizes. However to me they get away with it because it is in Longwood Gardens so you either eat here or in the cafeteria style restaurant. Like any theme park, the food is up-priced compared to what it would probably be if it was a stand alone establishment. For me it was worth it though for the taste and as part of the overall experience. We sat outside and watched the sunset-highly recommended! I took off a star because we had a long wait despite my reservation. We were sat nearly half an hour after the reserved time. Once we got to our table I saw why: they were saving four tops for larger parties. I was a hostess so I get it, but at the same time this is tacky to me when we have a reservation. We had to ask twice about being seated before they finally sat us at a four top, and to be honest I think they would've waited until a smaller table became available no matter how long it took. Low and behold a few of the four tops were never taken, so there was no reason for this wait time. Our server however was delightful and gave us recommendations about what to see. All things considered I would not come to Longwood Gardens just for 1906, but if I have the means I would eat here every time I visit - just be sure to have a reservation and note they still might make you wait. read more

The excellent experience was tainted by the fact that the server "neglected to mention" that the white truffle special was a significant addition to the check, to the tune of close to $50 for a version of white truffle fettuccine Alfredo APPETIZER! There was never any mention that there was an additional charge for that special, which, for a prix fixe menu, is highly unusual. It is nearly always a set menu at a set price. It felt very deceitful. I would not knowingly order a $50 appetizer, particularly not pasta. And the truffles were flavorless! The highlights were the basil/fennel sorbet/palate cleanser and the dessert, which was clever and unique - a candy apple shell filled with a mascarpone/diced apple type filling (something like that). Everything else was good, but value for price ratio was sadly lacking. The service was stellar except for the deception. For those reasons, I would not be inclined to return and would not recommend to anyone I like. I've had far better food for far less and not been deceived about pricing. Left a bad taste in our mouths after paying over $300 for the experience. read more

I have eaten at this restaraunt a few times. I was happy with the service, the waiter was very friendly and professional and explained everything on the menu. The food was good and it was very nice being able to sit outside on the deck area. On our most recent visit we decided to treat ourselves with the chocolate fountain desert and it was amazing. This is definitely a fine dining experience and menu, the menu items arent for everyone and it is pricey. This place was amazing! We stopped by for lunch while at Longwood Gardens over the weekend and it was wonderful. The ambiance was tasteful and calm, with thoughtful touches like mint leaves and twine to tie their napkins together. We got the mushroom soup and steak salad, crab cakes, chicken salad/fried oysters, and omelet. The mushroom soup was so good. The steak in the steak salad was fine but the salad was incredible (and I'm not a salad person!). Everything else was also delicious. And the brioche bread that comes in a cute lil flower pot was amazing, so soft and warm. They have a good selection of cocktails and mocktails, as well as interesting dessert options. I love the theme of past/present/future dishes. We tried to sample some from every era but ended up with mostly past dishes. With the beautiful classic American farmhouse decor, we were really transported back in time! Our waiter Ryan (I think) was incredible. It happened to be my sister's birthday and he brought out the most delicious vanilla bean ice cream with a candle, along with a card signed by the entire staff! We were so touched. We went for lunch and found the restaurant itself to be very nice with an open feeling to it. They do offer outdoor seating but it was on the chilly side so we ate in the dining room. The staff were all friendly and attentive. We started out with the Spinach & Artichoke Panisse, which is a chick pea flour cake with marinated artichokes, boursin, served with a lemon-garlic mayonnaise. It was both different and delicious. The Herb Gnocchi came with morel mushrooms, fiddlehead ferns in a white wine reduction. It was good but nothing all that special. The other entrée was the BBQ'd Pulled Mushroom Sandwich. This was trumpet royale mushrooms, crispy shallots, kale slaw served on a seven grain roll. We found that the BBQ sauce completely overpowered the dish and other than noting the consistency of mushrooms, you really wouldn't have known what you were eating. The bill before tip came to around $50. I think on our next visit we will just try the Café. read more

Yum! This place is surprisingly good for being the restaurant inside of a botanical gardens. True, it's been the trend to embed contemporary and fancy restaurants within museums and gardens for a while now, but my experience with them have been hit or miss, especially due to the high prices. We went in the middle of mushroom season, so they have plenty of mushroom related seasonal dishes. The mushroom soup was delightful, and you get these cute bread that ballooned and was molded in a cup. The main dishes were good as well - I especially enjoyed the turnip purée under my trout. The mister got the gnocchi and it was strangely fried (or puffed?), but he said that tasted good anyway. Don't forget the hot toddies!! We came here for the Christmas show and it was freezing out, so a warm cup of spiked apple cider was a welcoming idea. It seemed like they use a lot of seasonal ingredients and swap out the side dishes regularly. They also have a patio that is tented up during the winter (they pump heat through it), and that is nice to seat at because you can see the plants all around you. It is definitely a good place to stop by for a nice meal after running around the gardens! read more
