This was the ultimate date night! Yes, like others said, the service is slow-- WE LOVED THAT!! If you are in good company, you are in no rush! I loved that we weren't rushed and could enjoy our time. The food was incredible! The spaghetti with crab was something I will dream about for a long time. And the best part was sitting at the window and seeing the fountains and lights outside. We also enjoyed getting to go for a walk around Longwood after dinner. My only negative is that when I went to make another reservation for dinner again. There are no dinner times for the foreseeable future because the gardens close at 5pm now. I hope that changes!! read more

We have been fans of the original 1906 Restaurant for years. We were about to be seated in a lot of direct sun. I asked to be seated at another table in an almost empty dining room for lunch. Seeemed to be a big deal, but we were moved. Our server was very pleasant and professional. We all shared a delicious seeded brioche with fancy butter. The mushroom bisque was yummy. I had the French Omelet. Totally awesome! Perfect eggs, filled to the brim with sweet lobster. Unfortunately, my "scallop aficionado" wife found the scallops to have a strong fishy odor. Since one of our companions was enjoying her scallops, my wife said nothing. read more

Now in a new location, under the Conservatory and facing toward the fountains. It's a beautiful space with a garden theme that really works. The food is excellent. We were there for lunch and had the Oyster and Chicken Salad plate along with the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra (Maryland crab, saffron, herbs, pasta). Both were delicious as was the Caramelia dessert, which consisted of chocolate mousse with some very interesting flavors added (see photos). Service was very good as you'd expect in a restaurant of this caliber. On the downside - no more flower pot bread! And the prices ... well, you don't dine here that often! Just call me not impressed. This has been my favorite restaurant for years! The food was always perfect as was the service and cocktails. This was our first experience at the new 1906. We had 6:45 reservations and had to wait until 7:15 to get our table. Then it took the server almost 15 minutes to bring us a menu. Our server turned out to be great! The cocktails are still amazing. But the menu leaves less than a great impression. They feature a whole chicken for $75 and a ribeye for $90. The menu offers many meatless options which are each around $30. Our food was just soso - certainly not what I'm accustomed to at 1906. The new space is stunning, but it's not so stunning as to over shadow a soso menu and average food. read more

It was a bit chilly but that was the only negative (well the service wasn't also the best but I'll excuse that it was a busy night) . The ambience was dreamy, cozy. Hey, I heard the mushroom soup was to die for. Don't worry you will walk out alive. I've had better mushroom soup, actually the best mushroom soup, up-da street at Two Stones Pub. BUT, I will attribute the weird consistency, almost tasteless soup, to the fact I was here on a Fireworks/Fountain show night. 2 stars The mandatory "overpriced for the servings" Prix Fixe menu on this Fireworks night did come through with the Dayboat Scallops. They were sweet, crisp sear with translucent interior, with baby fennel and the co-star of the dish, the lentils. I couldn't get enough of the perfectly al dente little devils, and to go with the small portion theme of the dining experience, I didn't. 4 stars For dessert, I chose the flourless chocolate/cake/tort, whatever it was, it was so small if you stuck out your middle finger between you and the plate, you would have blocked the vision of the entire dessert. 3 stars I wish I knew in advance before I made plans/res for dinner, that on the Fireworks night you were going to be forced into a Prix Fixe situation, I woulda went somewhere else. Important notes: You need a paid timed ticket to the Longwood Gardens to get entry, and reservations are absolutely recommended. This place is a fantastic dining gem in the middle of the Longwood experience. I've been to the gardens a few times but never with enough planning or timing to really enjoy the restaurant so this time I made a special point of it. You can select outdoor or indoor dining and the outdoor deck is spacious, smack against the woods area, and fantastically appointed. The menu rotates frequently and is difficult to decide which dish you want to select between many options. I loved their past/present/future theme focusing dishes on different trends and yet still keeping matched to the season. I enjoyed the chicken salad and fried oysters immensely. I felt as if every dish and drink was a full composed experience and absolutely worth the fine dining label. There was just a slight misstep with one of the desserts which had a candied hazelnut tuille but it was very tiny and did not balance well against the berry heavy plate. A very small thing but that's how high the standards are kept here. This is a leisurely experience so be sure to plan for 2 hours in your gardens experience to enjoy. If you're a semi regular visitor, planning for dinner before the fountain shows is a fantastic evening. read more

I had high hopes for this restaurant. 1906 has a lot of potential but the service and food was such a let down for me. I will start with the good. The ambiance is great. Very cozy, classy and modern. I was surprised there was not a service to bring the customers from the entrance to the restaurant. During the cold months it is a long walk to the restaurant so make sure you are bundled up for the walk. We waited a long time for our drinks and the food came out way too fast we were only able to enjoy one cocktail during our time there. I do think it is important to mention the manager that night stepped in and took care of us. The food was the part I was most excited for and it was underwhelming. The menu is limited which I usually like but I was looking for a good red meat option and all they had was "steak salad" I did not enjoy the options for appetizers. Although the presentation was beautiful the flavors were bland. The donuts for dessert were inedible tasted like a ball of bread instead of a sugary donut. I would like to try it again but would need to see a different menu. read more

Some times you eat at a restaurant just for the food. My wife and I ate at the 1906 for the food and to have a wonderful experience. If you appreciate both on a top tier scale, go to 1906 Fine Dining. The mushroom soup was very good, creamy and filled with flavorful mushrooms. The apex of the meal was the King Salmon. Like a fine wine it fills you with an amazing complexity. I've never had such an experience. Our service was excellent. Our needs were met and surpassed. When we had consumed our spring hors d'oeuvres for two, ( which was both tasty and an art form) I wondered what happened to the ice tea. A staff member apologized for the tardiness,but the first tea brewed was not up to their standards, and they had to start again. What an excellent example of superior service! read more

I really want to write a glowing review for 1906, but I just can't. Made a post-wedding reservation for 8, weeks in advance to celebrate, and upon arrival were led to a table set for 6. The staff scrambled to find another table and set it for our party. Hostess did offer provide a comp of sparkling wine upon being seated, which, of course was appreciated. I will say that the dining room is absolutely gorgeous, and all the staff is extremely friendly and polite. The menu is imaginative and creative. And truth be told, everything, from the red meat, to the scallops, to the pasta was really delicious, well prepared and presented. However, none of the eight dishes that came out of the kitchen was hot. Everything was room temp warm. A wedding cake was ordered in advance and when it came time for it, a server brought it out to the table to present it (as of course, none of us had seen it yet) and they did do a fantastic job with it's design. Everyone oohhh'd and ahhhh'd. The server took our coffee orders and back to the kitchen the cake went for cutting. Coffee and espresso came out and those too were not hot. And then we waited...and waited...and waited for the cake. And waited. When we asked the same hostess who gifted us with the sparkling wine about it, she said: "the pastry chef is a little backed up. I can't just wave a magic wand." Really? Really? All that was needed was cutting the cake. Finally, the pieces came out. One looked like it was cut with a chain saw. And our coffee was still cold; no one came by to see if we wanted more. As I said in the beginning, I really wanted to write a glowing review; this is not the first time I've eaten at Longwood. It's probably my 6th. I think the issue here is that the new restaurant appears to be 4-5x the size of the older one. Maybe in a year the management will have worked out all the problems with running a room of this size. I certainly hope so as the location and setup certainly deserves it. And one last mention: I find it difficult to understand the fact that if you want to go to this restaurant, you need to purchase a $25 ticket per person to walk through the gardens before you spend a dime in the restaurant. There are heaters but they were not ample to keep all the tables warm. Someone that left at the table next to us offered blankets to keep us warm. We ordered the 6 cheese plate. The cheese was good, however the accompaniments were lacking. I wish there were items like pickles and more than 1 jam. Instead it was some crostini, and wafer crackers, a fig and some grapes. The ginger cocktail that was ordered was too sweet and wasn't balanced at all. The food that was ordered was the king salmon and the flat iron steak. The king salmon, whoever prepped it didn't take out all the bones and 3 bones were found in the filet. The flat iron, was three pieces of steak and the rest was salad. It was very misleading from the menu, the server even said, "and you got the salad?" The mushroom side that was ordered was okay, however it could've used some acid to balance out the heavy sauce on the bottom. The kids enjoyed their mac and cheese and chicken tenders.. those seem to be items from the cafe which has always been good for the value. We ordered the flower pot desert, as stated all of it was edible, but I don't know how much thought was put into the balancing of edible flowers which, you could eat... however didn't pair well with the pot. Approx 250 dollars spent after tip and I was very disappointed, I believe my family will continue eating at the cafe vs the restaurant. Ps, we told the server about the bones of the salmon, however no apologies or compensation was offered. read more

My husband and I tried out this new restaurant for my birthday. I included the special occasion and my gluten allergy on the reservation, either were acknowledged when we sat down. We received menus after 20 minutes of sitting, drinks 40 minutes later and food after 90 minutes. We tried talking to a manager and even switching to the bar area but were told no. We had the oysters which were shucked poorly, and it had a lot of shells in it, the chips and dip with very greasy chips, and the mushroom bisque which had so many pieces of burnt mushrooms the entire soup tasted bitter. For the entrées, we had the carbonara and the dayboat scallops, which were both OK. All in all, we will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

It was my birthday and I told my husband that I want to go to the 1906 House to celebrate. It's been newly renovated and the food there is amazing. The ambiance is superior. I had the striped sea bass and what a great choice. My husband had the lamb and it was done perfectly as recommended. The dessert was spectacular as it was shaped in a mushroom which was decadent. The service was excellent and the special roast chicken dinner for two was delicious starting with the brioche and honey butter and the carved chicken with tiny Brussels sprouts and stuffing. Really no need for a side with these although the mash potatoes were very good. I have had several fantastic meals at 1906 over the last few months. Reservations are generally required, and make sure you make them early, especially during the holiday season. 1906 has a nice patio in warmer weather, which is tented with heaters in the winter for a nice indoor/outdoor dining experience. I love eating "outside" during the holidays because you can see the lights from the table. The food here is excellent, and reasonably priced compared to other restaurants of the same caliber (members also get 10% off). Most recently, I had the jail island salmon entree and mushroom soup. If you're looking for mushrooms, l'd skip the soup (it was quite heavy) and instead get the mushroom risotto that my husband ordered. The dessert was my favorite part--the chocolate tart was phenomenal. read more

My friend and I ate at the 1906 lounge yesterday. As we both have celiac disease, our options were limited. I had the risotto, she had the burger without the bun. The French fries are not cooked in a separate fryer, but we ordered them anyway. They were soggy. The poached egg in the center of my risotto was cold. I wasn't sure if that was intentional, so I ate it anyway. The mushroom bisque I ordered (but didn't receive) looked delicious at the table next to ours. Maybe it was going to arrive after the risotto(?) but I didn't need it. The waiter took it off the bill. The ambiance was lovely, with large windows everywhere. Decor was beautiful but the chairs were very difficult to get out of due to the fact they stick on the carpet. Maybe they need sliders on the chair feet? Unfortunately, we won't be back. read more

As one of the main fine dining experiences in the north east corner of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, 1906 is a hotspot for a special fine dining experience at Longwood Gardens. Every six weeks they change their menus, but recently with the new move, the quality of the food has regressed in order to accommodate the new location. We are hoping they bring back their local charcuterie boards, as well as more clean dining options to accommodate pescatarian, vegetarian, and celiac disease. The staff was interesting, working to accommodate rude old customers versus customers that needed help and patiently waited. **I personally made a comment to the ladies that they were impeding the server of doing their jobs while aiming to make the environment comfortable for everyone. **We are always looking to return back, but hoping the fine dining experience will be elevated to the standard we expect as usual from 1906 next time. read more

After reading all the positive reviews we had high hopes for this restaurant. We had a 6pm reservation for Saturday evening (pre Mother's Day dinner before the illuminated Fountain show). We entered through a lovely winding pathway that led to the entrance of 1906. The restaurant is located to the left upon entrance. We were greeted by the host who showed us to our patio table. There was lovely music playing as well as nice lighting. The table was very nicely set. We had delicious bread that came in flower pots to the table. This was the best part of our meal and it was free. The menu is set up as Past, Present and Future (all plant based options). We started with the wedge salad (past) which could have used more dressing as it was rather dry. The sun dried tomatoes and pancetta were an added bonus. However, for $16 I would expect an abundance of blue cheese crumbles rather than just three or four. I ordered the crabcakes (past) for dinner. Since they are supposed to be a time honored favorite, I thought they would be phenomenal. To say they were underwhelming for $45 dollars would be kind. They were mostly filler with very little jumbo lump crabmeat. I had expected much better quality than mushy stuffing with a few pieces of crab meat in each. They came with the thinnest asparagus possible and fingerling potatoes (which Iva substituted for the greens that accompanied the meal). The crabackes set atop a yellow sauce which tasted strongly of mustard. My daughter ordered the grilled cheese and french fries which had to be substituted for peanut butter and jelly as she can not each cheddar. Iva was very nice about this and did her best to accommodate my daughter. Once again for $15, I would have thought this would be the best presentation of a PB&J ever. Nope, just plain white bread and PB&J. I had an ice tea and my daughter had a shirley temple. Our total bill before tip was $85. The quality of food just did not live up to the high price tag. We might try again when we return, but I would definitely stick to the lower end items. or lunch. This was definitely not worth the price tag. We dined once before at 1906, and the food was phenomenal and easily 5 stars. My boyfriend and I took a weekend vacation to visit Longwood and we were looking forward to our 1906 experience so much. Unfortunately, we felt that our food left something to be desired in stark contrast to the amazing experience we had previously. We shared their tempura Maitake Mushroom Bloom (a boujee take on a Blooming Onion,) and we weren't too impressed; although, the dressing it was served with was good. It was literally just a deep fried mushroom. For our entrees, we both ordered the English Pea Agnolotti (raviolis in the common tongue.) I wish I had ordered something else, to be honest. It did not taste bad, but the flavors were not worth the $26 tag it had attached to it. We both agreed it was kind of a boring dish with not many exciting flavors, and did not differ at all from what you could easily make at home. I ended up not finishing mine because I wasn't too impressed and felt I could leave room for dessert. The dessert and drinks were the meal's saving grace. We both ordered the chocolate flower pots. Beautiful presentation and decadent chocolate mousse! And the drinks were well mixed. Our server, Ryan, was very amiable and attentive. We very much appreciated the service he gave us. I took my mother to Longwood Gardens and to 1906 for her birthday, having never been to the restaurant but hearing good things, and WOW! It's a small restaurant with a cosy, lovely interior. The autumn menu was impressive, and everything (butternut bisque, artisan cheese plate, lafrieda short rib, severino sweet potato gnocchi, and the 1906 and autumn sangria cocktails, for the record) was amazing. Great service, too -- our waiter heard me say the bisque would be split between us and they did so in the kitchen, which is a little thing that makes sharing something like soup much easier. He also brought out a cupcake and a lovely card for my mother at the end of the meal (I said it was for her birthday in the reservation) which she enjoyed. We dined here last Saturday at 6pm. The food was phenomenal - easily 5 stars for the food. We had mushroom soup and maitake bloom as appetizers and both were very memorable. I had the crab cakes and that was also good. Flower pot dessert was unique and cocktails were good. Overall, hats off to the chef for the food. I only gave three stars because of bad service. Our server was a young man with short light-ish hair. We asked for four mushroom soups and only 3 arrived. Luckily the other guy that brought them over remedied that quickly. Our waters were never re-filled. We were never asked if we wanted more to drink when our cocktails were done. We weren't asked how the food was. When we asked what was in the "green goddess" sauce, he stated that the ingredients list was in his pocket but he'd have to come back and tell us later. He never came back and told us. I expected more from a fine dining establishment. Perhaps this young man was new but he definitely needs retraining as I walked away not thinking about the good food I just ate, but the subpar service we had. read more
