Upscale delicious local foods, w/dishes influenced by Filipino & turmeric touches! You can find these at Olena by Chef Ron Simon (OCR).
The name "Olena" means turmeric in Hawaiian, which is known for its medicinal & purifying properties that Hawaiian ancestors used to cleanse the mind & body. As such, OCR's mission is to create the most nutritious & flavorful dishes that are healthy & delicious.
Owner/chef Ron Simon is trained in French culinary classic techniques & patisserie & has 22 years of culinary experience. His experiences include: Westgate Hotel's Fontainebleau French restaurant (San Diego), Four Seasons Lodge at Koele (Lanai), Mauna Lani Bay Hotel (Big Island), Kukui'ula Club (Kauai), Café Miro, Padovani's Chocolates, & Pacific Club (Oahu). Chef Ron initially started at farmers' markets at Kapiolani Community College & the Blaisdell Center, before opening OCR at the University of HI Medical School as one of its vendors in Café Waiola in Aug. 2017. Due to extensive renovations at the medical school, OCR moved to its current location off of Nimitz Hwy. in Kalihi in 2018.

We've tried the following thus far:
* Prime rib. Absolutely loved this! Accompanied w/ tasty au jus sauce & creamy horseradish, the generous prime rib is so tender, flavorful, & just melts in your mouth! The homemade mashed potatoes w/ chunky bits of potatoes & creamy butter were very silky & delicious! Loved the popover to soak up the au jus sauce. Can't go without mentioning their amazing yellow-colored house dressing made w/ turmeric, orange juice & seasonings that complemented the tossed veggies well.
* Ribeye katsu. Crunchy panko exterior & tender ribeye make this dish so delicious!
* Beer battered shrimp w/fries. Succulent fried shrimp w/a perfectly delicious spicy aioli dipping sauce & crispy fries.
* Adobo pork belly musubi. Tasty musubi w/ the shoyu-vinegar flavored pork adobo complementing the rice perfectly!
* Ube bread pudding w/ salted caramel sauce. So heavenly, as it's a perfect marriage of the salty sauce to a sweet dessert!
* Filipino lemonade. Not overly tart or sweet, this refreshing drink w/ calamansi puree & bits of diced pineapple.
To ensure freshness & quality, Chef Ron makes only a limited amount of items. As their popular items, especially the daily specials, sell out quickly, it's best to pre-order in the morning to reserve them for pickup later. Check Instagram or Facebook to see the latest videos & photos of what the chef is making each day. Prices are a little higher but are well worth the cost for high-end, top quality offerings. Private catering is also available.
Customer service is amazing here! You'll meet Rose, Chef Ron's wife, when you place your order & pay for it. She is very friendly, accommodating, personable & eager to please you. For example, as I was taking pics of the refrigerated items, she asked if she could hold the fridge doors open so that I could take clearer pics! And if you're unsure as to what to order, she'll give you a rundown to help you make a choice. She'll engage in small talk with you, as you find out more about her chef husband & the philosophy behind the restaurant. Then you'll notice how super clean the restaurant is!
OCR is in a bright orange building & is a tenant of the Hawaiian Chip Co. (HCC), that is directly across the street. There are no tables or chairs, so this is strictly take-out. Open Mon to Sat, 10a - 3p. Free parking in their 8-space parking lot fronting the restaurant, w/a few additional parking spaces at HCC.
Loved OCR as a great top-quality take-out restaurant where you can find high quality local food dishes that are normally found in a hotel restaurant or exclusive club! We'll be back for more! read more
