I will start off this review by saying that it's too bad the rest of their food doesn't taste as spectacular as the bread (tasty, incredibly fresh marble rye) they serve. I was amped up when we walked in because the decor is wonderfully Bavarian, the host had on lederhosen, and there was a live accordion player! The bread and beers (served in beautiful glassware) continued the happy atmosphere. But, unfortunately, it was downhill from there. My weinerschnitzel had a side cut as if it had been too big. No big deal. But the taste was just ok. The potato dumpling was a round ball cooked on the outside but with raw, flavorless mashed potato on the inside. The gravy covering it was brown, which was the only hint that it actually was gravy. It had no flavor or seasoning. The spaetzle was ok, but with the same gravy covering it, it too needed additional seasoning. We are not salt-aholics by any means, but come on... every good cook knows how to make food taste good with a bit of seasoning. The shining light on the whole meal was the red cabbage and the sauerkraut...full of flavor and wonderfully tasty! The only two desserts on the menu were not good at all. The black forest cake was dry as if it had been sitting uncovered in the fridge for a week. The only moist part was the outer coating of whipped cream frosting. Which leaves us with the apple strudel. I never knew baked apples and puff pastry could be so bland. It came warm and swamped in vanilla sauce, obviously to cover up the actual strudel. Even though our server was pleasant, by this time we had already decided we'd never be back. The nail in the coffin was when the bill came and we were charged a $2+fee for using our credit card, which, by the way, won't show up on the receipt you get. Really? Isn't this a part of doing business? Why don't you add a fee for electricity or a fee for water if we flushed the toilet? This is incredibly cheap and leaves a bad impression. It's really a shame because if the food had even attempted to be seasoned, this would be a "to go" place on a regular basis. I don't understand the reviews that give this place a 4+ star rating. I will say it was busy the whole time we were there. Maybe that's due to their no reservation policy, being closed Sun and Mon, and only open 4 hrs on the other nights. If you're on a no-sodium diet and you're a local, then this is the place for you. read more

So to come to a German restaurant, it's breaking the rules :-0 With covid times, the menu was limited so I had a difficult time finding a dish I could eat. I had to eat more of that free rye bread and butter to fill me up before I tried the meat dishes. Sausage :-/ (not my thing but take it with a grain of salt since I don't eat meat like I used to) Schnitzel was good - thin, tender inside and crunchy outside. Gravy was good not vinegary. The sauerkraut was delicious along with the spaetzle, the red cabbage was a little sweet for me but I loved the german potato salad. Brief review: definitely worth the drive from Laveen - but be prepared to wait, patiently. They do not accept reservations. Food was hot, fresh, and flavorful. Not brief review: we stopped in a few Saturdays ago, barely after their opening time of 4:00 and it was already crowded! It is not an overly large restaurant so it almost felt cramped, but there is ample parking, and we were seated within a couple minutes of arriving. There was a large table in the center with a big group, and we only saw two servers, plus one gentleman who looked as if he was doing double duty as a bus boy. One of the two servers certainly had a dual role as she was tending the bar while also busting her butt serving. She was like lightening, in and out, done and gone, moving on. Our server was busy as well. Now comes the patient part. I do not know if they were short staffed, but it took longer than expected to get glasses of water, then longer still to have our drink order taken and delivered. It was quite some time after that before the server returned with the rye bread - which bread was a God send because of the delay in placing our food order and its arrival. At least we had something to nibble on during the wait. There was a gentleman there in lederhosen who eventually started playing the accordion. Sadly, there was no microphone to amplify his music. With the noise from the restaurant it was very difficult to hear him play! Regardless, we enjoyed what we were able to hear -- and the ambience of the restaurant was festive. Plenty of knick knacks to look at. When our meals finally arrived, they were wonderfully well worth the wait. The sausage was piping hot, the schnitzel was to die for (they need to add a side of schnitzel to their menu!!), and the apple strudel was steaming when delivered. Unassuming place located in a strip mall in Masa, AZ. We walked in and were surprized the place was packed. We were seated right aways. The server was attentive and friendly. The food: Weiner schnitzel with red Sauerkraut and potato dumplings were the sides, my wife had the special which was the ham hock with the same sides. We also ordered a pitcher of beer, it arrives at the table ice cold. The food, which arrived very quick was piping hot and very tasty. Husband was carving some pork knuckles and this is about the only real deal german he can find other than some beer-american garden in old town Scottsdale. You know a place is beloved by the locals when they choose to only open four hours a day, five days a week. We came here on a Friday night before 530pm and there was already a line. Wife was having a German food craving. Came here with a friend who came to visit. Seated right away and german rye bread and butter brought to table right away. I ordered a 32oz Bock beer and the bride ordered a 16oz hefeweisen beer. The ladies split a giant schnitzel with German potato salad and knududel and I ordered the two bratwurst with red cabbage and German potato salad. Food was EXCELLENT! Beer was wonderful. Staff was attentive. Nice older gentleman playing German songs on accordion. Finished off with hot apple strudel which was quite yummy. Had a wonderful meal. Great night. I lived in Germany for 1 1/2 years and my wife and I have traveled there several times. This German restaurant has existed for something likek 40 plus years. Even though we live close we had never visited it. With that longevity it has to be good, right? The atmosphere is definitely gasthaus like. Hours are limited to 4-8 pm, Tuesday-Saturday. Seating is limited. No reservations available. The menu is ever more limited. If you don't like pork, don't bother. Except for a weekend special and a liver sausuage offering, probably pork liver, , everything else on the menu is breaded and fried pork. No chicken, no beef, no seafood. My wife had the basic schnitzel. It was a rectangular piece of meat that looked like it was factory produced. Her potato dumplings appeared to be scopes of mashed potatioes rather than a real dumpliing. She did like the sauerkraut and the red cabbage I had the Jaeger schnitzel. This breaded pork cutlet looked more like a home prepared piece of meat. The gravy and mushrooms, though, looked and tasted as if they originated from a can. Both of us thought our food was devoid of any seasoning, or flavor. I had to douse my schnitzel with salt and pepper to generate any flavor. Then I realized this restaurant is located in the heart of east Mesa's snowbird-catering trailer parks that are populated by seniors who probably are on a salt restricted diet. The spaetzle was okay, but also needed heavy seasong to generate any flavor. My wife had the apple strudel desert and it, too, was devoid of any flavor. I tasted it and I was unable to tell the difference between the dough and the applies in either texture or flavor. Very bland My Black Forest Cherry cake was served ice cold. The cake portion was as a dry as a new kitchen sponge and registed a minimum level of chocolate flavor. Maybe it was old. Service was adaequate, nothing special. Then, the check included a fee for using a credit card. The fee charged for credit card acceptance is a cost of doing business. It should be built into the overhead. Otherwise, it is simpoly excess profit for the business. At the very least, this extra fee should be noted on the menu. All in all, this restaurant did not earn a positive review We will not be back. Having said that, it was busy between 5 and 6 pm. on a Saturday night. read more

It really makes you feel like your in a different world there with the decorations, giant beers and the live accordion music. Very cool place! Checking out the menu before heading over I noticed the pricing is really good and the reviews have been great so I feel pretty confident to check it out. I even got a recommendation from a friend from Germany so I think it's confirmed it will be good. I really was excited to try the curry worst and the schnitzel. I must say it all is very delicious! The curry worst has a curry ketchup smothered on the brat that has a little heat but a right amount of sweet to it. I got the red cabbage and the potato dumpling which I can eat a huge bowl of the red cabbage and the dumpling was good but not great. I'll try another side next time. The schnitzel came out pipping hot and was nice a crispy. Loved the gravy they put on top too. I might order that next time! All around great place with great service in a great environment. If you've never been to Germany or eaten actual German food, this could be for you. If your idea of German cuisine is primarily deep-fried schnitzels this is for you. If you think Germans only eat basic Wurst, fried schnitzel and smoke pork chops, this is for you. However, this is just Midwestern Americanized festival food. Low flavored food for snowbirds. The building tries hard to look like a German Brathaus, but the service is quite slow. The price isn't terrible, but the food doesn't deliver. The menu is also super basic and nothing here tastes like actual German food. I was very dissapointed in the Leberkase. Nothing like Leberkase at a German Deli. I'm so lame, I know. I like going to Zur Kate for one reason: my dad was all about his German heritage and their food. He passed away several years ago, so my husband and I come here every year on the anniversary of his passing to honor him. Zur Kate is a comfortable neighborhood restaurant. I like their different varieties of schnitzel a lot and have never been disappointed with my order. My husband tries all kinds of menu items and has enjoyed them all. They always seem to have someone playing the accordion, which gives the restaurant nice ambience. The waitstaff is very friendly and efficient. I stumbled upon Zur Kate this week and had to stop in twice! It's a German restaurant that offers traditional favorites. I tried both the weisswurst and the currywurst and loved them both. The currywurst was my favorite with a touch of heat. What actually brought me back was their red cabbage side dish. Just the right amount of tartness with a touch of sweet, outstanding. They have also done a great job at recreating the feeling you get when traveling Germany and you stop in a local brewpub. I will definitely be back.
