So happy to see a solid and well deserved 4 Star rating! Zig Zag has a location under a hotel and is virtually on the beach. A lot of times this sort of location breeds a complacency in service and standards. Not here. The service, standards, and pizza FLAVOR matches the location. Plenty of beer and sodas as you order and the toppings list matches international expectations. In other words if you want a cheese or pepperoni pizza for the kids it will be excellent. the wife and daughter were at a baby shower so the boy and i caught a movie and a late lunch. he felt like pizza and we were close enough to ZIGZAG that i figured we should give the "new" place a try. not surprisingly, WYATT settled on THE NUMBER ONE HIT (mozzarella, fresh garlic, fresh basil, tomato sauce -- hold the basil) since he's your basic cheese pizza kinda guy. i took the recommendation of the rascal turning out the pizzas and had THE WHITE ALBUM (blackened shrimp, spinach, caramelized onions, slivered almonds, garlic and 5 cheese sauce). these guys take a minimalist approach. this is not your basic doughy, mid-west style pizzas piled high with toppings. decent crust -- still getting used to ordering lunch in a cafeteria line. pretty good but not great pizza. interesting, out of the ordinary drink selection. lots of bottled beers. We took a bike ride from Carlsbad to ZigZag Pizza in Oceanside. By the time we arrived we were famished, hot, and thirsty. It's a build your own pizza/salad place where pizzas are around $8-9 and there are refrigerators filled with beer and other cold drinks. The pizza was hot and crispy thin crust - I can't remember my exact topping combination, but it was lots of veggies and goat cheese (yay, no casein like cows milk!). Pros: * Variety of salad/pizza toppings * Ability to personalize your meal to exactly what you want * Good price point * They also have wine and beer and give you a Mason jar to drink out of :) Cons: * Service: Yes, you work in a "hip" little place by the beach. But you can also be nice to your customers instead of acting like you are too cool to be a server. Then you go to the opposite wall and pick out your drinks. Then you get in another line to pay and get a table number. I was really excited to come here and finally try this place out when I was done fishing with my friends one day nearby the Oceanside Pier. In my honest opinion, I think their pizzas here were just ok. They did their job by satisfying my hunger, but I just didn't get full of their pizza. I've been to other DIY pizza places and was completely happy after three slices, but with ZigZag, I was left waiting for more. Possibly upping the amount of toppings for a more of a filling feeling would really help. One other tiny detail is that with such a beautiful location, and people coming in and out, the staff here could do a little work on their customer service skills. Our party enjoyed the following pizzas & salads: - Smoke on the Water salad - China Girl salad - Pepperoni pizza - The White Album pizza The pizza is a thin crust yet sturdy - holds it's contents without folding over. They have a few different sauces to choose from. The White Album had spinach, blackened shrimp, & almonds. It is worth every penny. Delicious! The salads are chop chop - I love. No fighting the greens with my human teeth (as versus horse or cattle teeth, which are far better designed for chomping greens). The salads bowls look average sized. They are NOT. Those bowls house at least two heaping servings of salad. One salad is enough for two of you for sure, four people if you're not huge salad fan or are lunching. If you're in the area - pop in. There is also a middle aisle of condiments that your not told about so you go in a circle to figure out why you have no plates for your pizza or forks for your salad to then find this thing that you walk right by. A previous douche was nice enough to leave the red pepper lid loose for us so that happened too, but thanks to my 2 y/o it spilled on the table not my pizza. All in all will I come back?? My wife and I went to Zigzag pizza for a late lunch since we were staying at the wyndham. We loved the taste of the pizza, and I loved that I was able to select basil pesto sauce since I have acid reflux. Overall, we would go back to Zig Zag for lunch or a early dinner. Last, the 4% charge to offset the minimum wage raise in California is on the very bottom of their menu. read more

This is a classic 'chicken sh*t' move when an owner does not have the balls to be upfront and raise their menu prices. If you need a price increase dude, just be honest and raise them! I'm happy to see this place up and running. I think it will do great as an extension of the hotel. Tons of pizza has opened up downtown and I happen to think that is a good thing. Hopefully with all that competition, the winner will be my tummy. There were a lot of employees working. They are clearly investing in this new venture. I do think it would have been helpful for one of these many employees to have explained how the process works. We were greeted by a professional looking blonde woman then walked to the pizza area to talk to a guy who looked like he was meant to work in a pizza place, pony tale and all! He was super friendly and excited about our twin babies but kept talking or getting distracted every time we tried to order. He was charming enough for it to be humorous rather than rude though. Turns out you can only order pizza with the first person then must walk down and order salad from the salad person. Then you go pick out your drinks from several well lit glass cases and tell the cashier what you ordered and pay. We order the ZZ Top pizza which is basically a classic pizza. Pepperoni, sausage, meatballs and mushrooms. I don't remember the "title" of the other pizza but it was some sort of black bean sauce with a bunch of veggies and it was tipped with cotija cheese. I LOVE cotija so this was very tasty. The salad we bought was called Bohemian rhapsody. It was tasty. It was something like a spring mix with veggies, corn, a light dressing and COTIJA! Overall everything was tasty. If I were staying at the hotel I can imagine being stoked on the beer selection and huge selection of cartons of Ben and Jerry's. Since we were leaving and not going back to our hotel room we opted to get dessert at another downtown establishment. I hope this place does well. We love coming here when we are craving a good pizza. A pizza and a salad is the perfect amount for 2 people to share. My favorite is the white album pizza but my husband loves the stairway to heaven. You can't go wrong with either one!! We love that the crust is on the thinner side but still delicious. They do make gluten free crusts if you need one! As for salads smoke on the water is by far the best one in our opinion. We always go get that one!! And now the beer selection is awesome!! Went to Legoland for the day and decided to stop here for dinner on the way home. The atmosphere is really great, the staff was amazing and friendly, and the pizza was amazing! The pretty fly was really good but the jalapeños do add some heat. Satisfaction was delicious also, but my favorite would have to be the ZZ Top! Checked this place out on a chilly Thursday night, because I've had really good luck with Cohn restaurants over the years. ZigZag did not disappoint. We got pizzas and salads to try out a taste of both. Both were excellent. Pizza was so good that the carnivore in the group didn't even realize the pizza was veggie until after the first slice. It was that good. They have plenty of meat offerings too, but the Light My Fire pizza was so tasty it didn't matter. Really excellent (bottled) beer selection also. This place just opened down the road from my condo. Walked over to try it out. Wow, at first impression, looking at the beverage selection... Insane! You don't even mind the lack of draft beers with the selection of local and standard beers and wine. A total of 9 open door coolers for beer, wine, and non alcoholic drinks. I ordered a ZZ Top (meat and mushrooms) to go. I had a beer while I waited but ended up eating the pizza here it was so quick! It was amazing, thin crust and just the right size. I don't eat meat so I'd recommend the Maggie's farm pizza to other vegetarians! It sounds weird because there's carrots on it but I gave it a shot and it's literally the best pizza I've had in my life. Pizza was good- but my issue is with the "kid friendly" claim! All of the tables in the restaurant are tall, but they have no tall high chairs. I'm local to the area but I know a majority of their business is tourists and families on vacation. It's so frustrating as a Parent to have to eat with one hand with a child on my lap because the restaurant doesn't have the right high chairs. My son will not sit in a low high chair at a tall table. He is basically under the table, and there is also no easy surface or way to feed him. Please remedy this before I come back, if I come back! read more

Went here tonight for first time with a friend and it was good. Personal pizzas starting at $8.50 that you can choose from ZigZag specialties or build your own; there are also salads available. They also have refrigerator cases to go pick out your beverage and the choices are countless. They also have beer & wine. The place is urban-industrial decor and cool tunes playing in the background to suit everyone's taste. The employees were all friendly and accommodating if you needed anything. They only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because all the seats are metal stools ( with no backs on them ) - which can be hard on people needing their backs supported - like me. After leaving my review of my first experience here, one of the managers contacted me and asked if I was willing to give it another go. Today, I decided to take them up on their offer and give them a second chance after my unforgotten experience before. My boyfriend returned on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. Just a family eating in there and enjoying their lunch. We ordered the same two pizzas that we got the first time (the ZZ top and Margaritaville) and a Ceasar salad. The service this time did NOT take 50 minutes. Instead, right when we ordered they started chopping the salad right in front of us. They stored the fresh ingredients for the salad right by the register, which I thought was nice to see. We sat down to wait for our order and our salad came right out. About 15 minutes later, the pizzas were done and we were on our way. The only negative review I have for this experience was the fact that they forgot to put the marinated chicken on my margaritaville pizza and caesar salad. Other than that, the pizzas were just as great as the last time and the service was SO much better. Jordan made sure that everything we needed was taken care of and our order was completed in a reasonable amount of time. Kale Caesar salad I got to go and ask for the dressing on the side because they mix it and send it on your way and gets a little soggy if you don't eat within a few minutes. The gluten free pizza adventure continues! When stepping up to the counter, I was informed that the only non gluten free meat on the menu were the meatballs. We were also reminded to stay away from anything with Thai peanut or BBQ sauce. Not sure what the pizza dough flour includes-it is imported in, already made... and certified. First we took a risk on a #7-The White Album ($9). It is good... but shrimp just does not sit right on my pizza, and I missed the tomato sauce. I also had a #3-ZZtop, substitute red bell peppers for meatballs ($8)-yum! While the dough was not quite the Forget-It's-Gluten-Free taste at BJ's, but valued pizza. He does not give the place a good first impression and I would've turned and left if my kid wasn't so hungry.
