19. Pan Fried Turnip Cake 蘿蔔糕
Ann C.

I have been coming to Yung Ho since I was a kid so it's been open for more than 30 years. It's such a staple in this SGV Valley. So when I was craving Taiwanese breakfast this morning. I knew I had to stop by. I ordered their: Salted Soy Bean Milk 鹹豆漿 - Large Oyster Pancake 蚵仔煎 Pan Fried Turnip Cake 蘿蔔糕 Daikon radish pastry Rice roll - Fan Tuan (飯糰) You have to get their salted soy bean milk. It's so good with chunks of Chinese donut, soy bean, curd, and scallions. I love it that it's not too salty so you can add salt to your taste. We also love their rice roll, aka Fan Tuan. The size of it, it's almost as big as my little dog, Peanut's face, just wish that they had pickled greens. Their oyster pancake was surprisingly good, not as good as Taiwan but definitely reminded me of the flavors. We love their turnip cakes... Next time I probably ask them to pan fry a little bit more. And my parents love to get their daikon radish pastries, but I think I'll skip those next time. All in all, the flavors are still like I remember them from when I was little. They have pretty big portions and we will definitely be back next time. I'm craving Taiwanese breakfast. Just remembered to not come too early in the morning because it does get really busy or if you wanna beat the crowd, you can phone in your order like we did.

Service was really good, they only really speak Taiwanese but as long as you know how to say thank you it's okay. Food was decently priced and came out really quick.

This is an authentic Taiwanese breakfast restaurant where you can try many classic Taiwanese favorites all in one place. However, the service was a bit slow since there were so many people waiting and only two servers at the front. I really enjoyed the tofunao, a savory soft tofu soup that makes the perfect hot, comforting base to go with dishes like youtiao (fried dough sticks), xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), and congyoubin (scallion pancake).

Their new location is clean and nicely decorated. We got all the staples - soy milk sweetened and savory, yiou tio (crispy and doughy), black sesame soy milk, and the savory tofu. All were delicious. Stinky tofu was not overpowering. Stir fried rice cakes were warm and chewy, not oily. Green onion pancakes were perfect. Fan tuan yummy. The Taiwanese sausage in the fried rice was a little too done. We return every time we visit LA, and my parents still think it's the best for the soy milk and tofu. Their prices are the same as pre-pandemic, and you'll get old school Taiwanese hospitality.

They are severely understaffed so I'd say just order to-go rather than dine in if you don't have the time to wait. The whole place gives out the OG smell and their service is very family style. Which is expected, very slow pace so definitely good for older people like retired granms that can sit here and wait and chit chat with each other. I was in a hurry so I had to take the food to-go and even cancel an order after waiting for 30 mins and the food is still not started to cook.

Brought my mom up here from OC to do some of her chores and stopped by Yung Ho Cafe for a bit to eat. It ain't like the flavors of Taiwan, but I'm not gonna complain. I'm just stoked they have the foods and dishes that they do. And such a selection. Got the oyster/intestine vermicelli, onion pancake, turnip cake, stinky tofu, rou wan / ba wan and soy milk. Ther service. I don't expect much service from a place like this. They gor my orser right, food came fast and got me to go boxes quickly when I asked for them. So service to me was great. Didn't refill my water, but if I asked, I'm sure they would. The tables were clean and the restaurant was clean. Bathrooms were on the cleaner side for an Asian restaurant too. Overall, I would definitely come back here to eat because I love myself some Taiwanese eats !

4++ small low frills cafe that seems to be family owned and operated and is one of those spots where it is frequented by lots of locals. It looks like a great place to grab a Taiwanese breakfast for a really reasonable price. I would love to come back and just have a relaxing morning here. My trip in particular was to come by and pick up a Chinese donut. I came in and asked to order to go and was helped by a very friendly person. There was a slight language barrier, but luckily I remembered the Cantonese word my mom uses for the Chinese donut, haha. (I'm Viet). I was told to grab a donut here and pair it with some congee at another specific location so that's what I did. The donut is huge and it's very cheap. That's why I would love to come back to support this place and order a proper full meal here. There's also some frozen dumplings so you can purchase to go and prepare or heat up at home. Just a really great place with my limited experience here.

One of my favorite spots to visit when I'm back home! No frills cafe, yet still nostalgic with simple decorations. There are a few tables and booths--we were able to seat a party of 8. Everything was so tasty and fresh, just the right amount of sweet and salty. My favorite things to get are the fantuan and congee with preserved century egg.

To be fair in this review, I didn't get their traditional Taiwanese breakfast items which actually looked decent. As far is items I actually ordered l, I Got the beef noodle soup. Was not flavorful, but portion was relatively generous. Wouldn't come back for this by any means. Also, got a sesame seed desert from the counter which tasted....really stale.

Cydia N.

Fast casual place you can either order at the counter or on the app by your table. We ordered soy milk with fried cruller. Add your own sugar for the soy milk but I didn't add any. Fried cruller was good but greasy. We really enjoyed our salty rice roll. I like it better than Yi Mei that's where we usually go to. (Sorry Yi Mei) we also ordered leek pie and pan fried egg cake. It was very delicious. Only thing that I would change for leek pie is it's not flavorful enough. But otherwise we really enjoyed our meal there. Oh and can't forget the mochi.! It was good too

porridge , fried crullers, fwan tuan.
Tony Y.

If you could only get one thing from here, i would say the fried cruller is the way too. It's just so perfect with your porridge or soy milk. They also use it in their fwan tuan, perfect combination of texture and taste. i'd order two next time i'm back here. The beef noodles portion was good and tasted fine. Lots of parking available and located on the right side of the structure when heading in from the entrance.

Drove 9 hours here was bit disappointed, food nothing like the last time I was here, We ordered #3, #7, 17,21,23 #3,salty soybean milk (鹹豆漿)seems was pre-cooked, temp. not boiling hot & the deep fried dough stick (油條)in the bowl was soggy. #21 small steam buns (小籠包)& #17 green onion cake with deep fried dough stick (蛋餅+油條)both ok. #23 leek pie(韮菜盒子)was not pan fired but deep fried. #7 ginger peanut soybean tofu (薑汁豆花)was good. Overall, not sure I will be back here again, recommendation reserved.

This restaurant been in the area for many years, I always visit when I am in San Gabriel area. Most people here speaks Mandarin however the cashier / order taker still does speak English. All the food made is so authentic and literally all are my favorite. However the most ones is the Turnip Cake with adding cake as optional & Fan Tuan which basically a rice roll with fried dough sticks, pork floss and pickled daikon. Other recommended menu that I always eat is Shao Bing aka Beef Sandwich, I guarantee you guys will not be disappointed.

But as for the food itself, the standouts would be the fried shrimp and the lobster. The shrimp is perfectly fried and I enjoy how soft the shell is. I like the lobster alot too. I personally prefer the way it's prepared at Henry's, but Newport's is still pretty decent. For the most part, the food is overloaded with MSG. Each time I've gone or taken food to go, I feel massively dehydrated after that I get a headache if I don't drink enough water. Luckily the staff was pretty on top of refilling our waters, and they often switched out our plates for clean ones. We've been going for years, and they used to allow substitutions for the set menu. But on a recent visit, this didn't seem like it was a thing anymore.

Named in reference to a Chinese proverb (which names 36 monumental moments that a person experiences in their lifetime), Array offers upscale pan-Chinese cuisine intended to match the grandeur of monumental events. Now, Array joins a select group of ultra-premium SGV Chinese restaurants, offering an eclectic set of labor-intensive dishes hailing from Shanghai to Chongqing. From the outside, Array has wavy, avant-garde cement walls and a red carpet leading up to the sturdy, cast-metal double doors. Enter the opulent lobby, featuring a recessed ceiling light projecting through a thin layer of water and an LED whale illuminating a ceiling-high fountain. Past the fountain, you'll find a dimly lit dining room with nature motifs intermittently protecting against the otherwise dark, cavernous atmosphere. In contrast, private rooms along the periphery are comfortably bright and individually themed. Close the doors, and you almost entirely block out the ambient chatter and moody instrumental. I visited Array for a friend's birthday celebration. Across our feast, some of the consensus favorites were the Shanghai-Style Smoked Fish with Preserved Plums (crispy, sweet, and savory all in one) and the Stewed Sliced Fish in Wine Sauce (featuring fresh filets tossed in a thick, rich rice wine sauce). I also enjoyed the flavorful Crispy Prawns in Plum Sauce and the Teppanyaki Drunken Pork Neck. The signature Roast Duck was a show and craft in itself, artfully flambeed in baiju and smoked at table side, then served with the traditional accoutrements of pancakes, duck sauce, Asian pear, and brown sugar. Other dishes were on the better side of standard, including the Mapo Tofu with Ground Pork, the Snow Pea Leaves Stir Fry with Garlic, and the Spicy Vermicelli Hotpot (with some noodles crisping up against the stone bowl). The signature Sous-Vide Sichuan-Style Beef Short Ribs was more memorable for the plethora of spices and sauces on the sides, rather than the actual meat. Lastly, some items were one-dimensional or forgettable, including the bone-heavy Sizzling Chicken Clay Pot and Steamed Fish Ginger and Scallions; the starchy Stir-Fried Japanese Yam, Wood Ear and Pumpkin; and the plain Braised Pork and Vegetable Rice. The prices leaned toward premium (appetizers and veggies are ~$20, entrees are $30-40, and signature items reach $100); the service failed to match the prices, as some of our dishes were forgotten, and beverages were rarely refilled. The best dishes were excellent, but most plates didn't exceed "standard" by too much. I probably won't go out of my way to pay Array a repeat visit, but I will still be dreaming about that delicious rice wine-stewed fish.

The dan dan was flavorful, good mix of cucumbers, meat and noodles, not too oily, not too spicy, and the noodles had a good chew. The fried noodles were pretty basic and not enough meat, but still good. The soup dumplings were very good, perfect amount of soup, the chicken was juicy and tasty! But we loved the lava chocolate dumplings! The chocolate is a dark chocolate but still slightly sweet, very filled and the cheese foam to dip it in is a great compliment for it. Highly recommend it! Given that this place is definitely on the higher end in terms of price, I was expecting the dishes to be a little more unique and exquisite. Peking Duck - 6/10 Pretty standard. The duck skin was crispy and fatty, which was good, but the actual meat was a little dry. The wrapper was okay, but nothing particularly memorable. Crispy Walnut Shrimp - 8/10 By far the best dish of the meal. The shrimp was lightly battered but incredibly crispy, and the walnuts were excellent and complemented the shrimp really well. The sweet melon was questionable, though. I couldn't quite understand the appeal of adding fruit to this dish. Kurobuta Pork Xiao Long Bao - 7/10 The filling was definitely up there in terms of flavor and quality, but the wrapper was far too thick for my liking. A thinner wrapper would have made a big difference. Seared Honey Glazed Cod - 5/10 Unfortunately, this was my least favorite. The fish was very fishy, the sear wasn't particularly impressive, and the sauce didn't pair well with the cod. There were also chestnuts and what I believe were shallots, neither of which I really cared for. Overall, it's a beautiful establishment with great service and very impressive presentation. Unfortunately, the flavors didn't quite match the appearance or the price point for me. The Crispy Walnut Shrimp was the standout, but the other dishes were more average than I expected.

There are a few Canto cafés around here, but this one is definitely one of our favorites. Dim sum is pretty easy to find, but authentic Cantonese cafés are much more of a rare find. The lower reviews are probably due to the service, but in my opinion, a truly authentic Cantonese restaurant should have questionable service because that's exactly what you get at the good places in Hong Kong. The philosophy in Hong Kong is basically "food over service." If they're being too nice, they're probably overcompensating for something haha. Getting either the hot or iced milk tea or lemon tea is a MUST. It's the traditional way to do it, and they even offer unlimited refills! Just be warned that you might not sleep that night because Hong Kong-style tea is no joke when it comes to caffeine. Pro tip: If you get the lemon tea, you have to crush the lemons into the tea to get the right flavor! My friends and I are regulars here. They're open late, and the ambiance is so fun, with tables decorated with mahjong tiles and neon lights that basically scream Asia. The food is top tier and, in my opinion, some of the best Cantonese food you'll find in the U.S. Our go-to orders are the tomato baked rice dishes, stir-fried vegetables, 3-cup dishes, and brisket curries. For something sweet, we always share the classic Cantonese French toast with peanut butter inside or one of the pineapple buns. Definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for an authentic Canto café experience! :)

Clams with Basil 5/10 - The flavor was decent, but the clams did not taste particularly fresh, which really took away from the dish. Pan-Fried Pork 2/10 - Unfortunately, this was my least favorite.
