Lao Ke Le is one of the only dedicated Shanghainese restaurants left in the area and they've done an outstanding job at making the cuisine more relevant than ever. The name is super Shanghainese, "老克勒" is a local slang to describe a sophisticated old school gentleman. There are some controversies that debate the origin of the word and even one that promotes the idea that it's a western loanword for "old clerk." No matter how one slices it, it is an exclusively Shanghainese term. Located in the New World Mall, it has been a near annual destination for me whenever I visit Flushing. I appreciate the spacious booths, nod to old Shanghai with the decor and museum rickshaw piece, and the bustling staff who sometimes will loudly bicker in front of patrons. It's not a perfect place by any means, with high prices and occasionally subpar service, but the food execution has been good enough to trump it every time. It is a group friendly spot, a date friendly spot, and casual enough to enjoy quality fare without the pretension. (#1) The black truffle and pork soup dumplings (黑松露小笼包 - $16) as well as the crab soup dumplings (蟹粉小笼包 - $13) are divine. The soup to light skin ratio is on point, though I do wish there were more than 6 pieces per order. The Shanghainese style huntuns (aka wontons) (上海小馄饨 - $10) are very good. While their pan fried dumplings (老克勒锅贴 - $12) are fat pot stickers, but it's also one of the juiciest dumplings I've ever had. Almost every time I've sank my teeth in them, a shot of broth squirts out into the ether. (#1) I am also enamored with the fried gluten (四喜烤麸-$12), which has a tinge of sweetness and flavorful with every bite. I'm also a sucker for the soy peas with pickled cabbage and shredded bean curd (雪菜毛豆豆干 - $10), which is basically every vegetarian's dream at slightly colder than room temperature. Their pork rice dumpling is basically a meat stuffed tangyuan (鲜肉汤圆 - $12), and is a nice savory take on a dish that I would normally associate as dessert. Their Shanghai style hong shao red braised pork (招牌红烧肉 - $27) is diabolical with how well marinated it is. While I love it with rice, it is texturally complex on its own and is obviously one of their signature dishes for a reason. The sauteed crystal shrimp (水晶虾仁 - $26) is not a must-order, but a good-order and wonderfully presented with a good amount of shrimp. I can never escape a quality Shanghainese meal without enjoying a scallion oil noodle (葱油拌面 - $10) or even the Shanghainese pan fried udon (上海粗炒面-$15), both of which are excellent here. The ultimate dish for me has been their crab roe meat noodles (蟹粉拌面 - $23) which is one of the most indulgent dishes I've had. The crabbiness is on another level and the textures are so rich that the flavor profile is through the roof. It is with sincere hope that they continue to keep their high standards while remaining a quality establishment.
