We came here for lunch today, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience overall. I had heard about this Shanghai-style restaurant for quite some time and was really looking forward to finally trying it. Sadly, the food did not live up to my expectations. On a positive note, the service was good. There was only one server, a young woman working this afternoon, and she was courteous and pleasant throughout our meal. For drinks, Hubby ordered Aunt Xu's Blood Glutinous Rice Milk Tea, while I had Aunt Xu's Blood Glutinous Rice with Fresh Milk. Both were refreshing and delicious, and these were probably the highlights of our meal. I ordered the Stir-Fried Tomato and Scrambled Eggs Mixed Noodles. It was decent, but nothing particularly special or memorable. The biggest disappointment was the Double Mushroom and Vegetable Heart Gluten Pot. There were barely a few pieces of gluten (面筋) in the entire dish. For a dish that features gluten as its main ingredient, the portion was incredibly disappointing. The taste was just okay--nothing particularly memorable. Gluten pot is one of my favorite Shanghai dishes, so I was especially excited to try it here. Unfortunately, the dish was far from what I had hoped for and made the experience even more underwhelming. Hubby ordered the Crispy Bottom Pot Stickers, which he described as just okay--nothing memorable and certainly not something that would make him want to order them again. The food here was pretty authentic and included lots of what I ate growing up with Shanghainese parents. We ordered 11 dishes, which was good for 10 people, following the "# of people + 1" suggestion for number of dishes to order. It was an ample amount of food and we all enjoyed it. In terms of food to get: almost everything we ordered was good. Sticky rice/zing I were fantastic. The pork buns are good but could be thinner. The pork belly was really good (but also very fatty as it is). The only thing I wouldn't order again is the fried corn. Service is OK - they're attentive enough. I would say, this is my top 3 Shanghai restaurants in the city. Service was great and the food tastes like home! So let's get into it. 红烧肉 braised pork belly: THIS, brings me back to Shanghai. The meat was extremely tender, flavorful yet not too salty. This was the favorite dish for the night. 椒盐排条 salt and pepper pork: I would skip, it was fried but not to its 100%, it was not very flavorful. 上海苗 Shanghai bok choy: it was fine, but a bit too overcooked. Nothing special. 葱油拌面 scallion oil dry noodle: by far, the best scallion oil noodle I've had in New York! This is my grandpas favorite noodle dish so I grew up eating this, and this brings back so many memories. A must get! 黄芽菜肉丝炒年糕 stir fry rice cake: another dish that brought me back to my childhood. I love that it's not overly too seasoned and the rice cake was cooked perfectly! 葱油虾皮韭菜馅肉混沌 dry wonton: I'm not a big wonton fan but it was good. Solid place for Shanghainese food! We've been to Nan Xiang and Shanghai You Garden many times- Red House is a hidden gem tucked away in a building complex on Prince. The restaurant is small with a handful of tables for four people and a few larger ones in the back. It wasn't busy on a Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed the tender braised pork belly, sour cabbage fish slice stew, spicy chicken appetizer, Shanghai style zong (sticky rice), chicken and bok choi stir fried noodles (kids loved it!!), and pan fried pork buns - so crispy and juicy! Definitely recommend coming here for a family style meal if you're craving classic Shanghai type dishes that won't disappoint. Good portion sizes too. read more

Located in the heart of Downtown Flushing, close to Flushing's new mall, Tangram. Red House Restaurant is what I've been told is authentic Shanghainese food. I loved walking into the ambience of old decor in the front and new towards the back, with Chinese Hip Hop playing throughout. My thoughtful Yelp friends, Anna and TC did the ordering of Popcorn Chicken with Fried Basil Leaves, Scallion Noodles, Pan Fried Pork Buns and Braised Pork Belly, all accompanied with one small bowl of soup. I'm sure more soup orders would've been brought to the table if requested. Though, as all items ordered were more than enough to share, additional soups were not necessary. The service was accommodating as Anna and TC speak the language fluently and were able to take command of the luncheon. So no extended waits for water or our meals. Would I go back? Yes. But not without guidance from my friends. As a novice to the area like me, downtown Flushing can be overwhelming with its tight knit streets filled with cars, pedestrians and jam packed to the brim with an abundance of sooo many restaurant choices, that I feel compelled to see what other authenticities are there to be enjoyed. Had a HORRIBLE experience. Food: The food was average at best. Ordered the White Chopped Chicken, Spicy Pork Noodles, Stir Fried Eel, and Smoked Fish. The White Chopped Chicken came without the sauce and I had to request for it which is ridiculous. What if the customers are not familiar with this dish? The Spicy Pork Noodles was average, not bad but not good. The Stir Fried Eel was the worst. In fact, I have a feeling they gave us the wrong dish. Everyone else get this dish served in a bowl but we got it in a plate. And it was missing scallions and only had a few pieces of eel, completely not worth the price. The only dish I liked was the Smoked Fish. It was warm and fresh. Service: The service was HORRIBLE. I have never been to a restaurant with such rude and inattentive waiters. When we got to our table, we were missing a chair. The waiter saw and told us he will go get one. But we waited a long time and he never returned with a chair. Do they expect customers to eat STANDING UP?! They also keep ignoring our calls; it take us 30 mins after being seated to order. They also did not provide chopsticks and plates. We had to request them. There was also a dog in the restaurant. Isn't it a law that dogs are not permitted in indoor dining? Overall, this was a fail lunch and I will NOT be returning. Over a week ago, I made a reservation via Yelp for a lunch date with my girlfriend. The restaurant's location is between Congee Village and The Dolar Shop. The weather was gorgeous in the high 80s today. I love the beautiful Chinese lanterns hung from the ceiling throughout the restaurant. These shrimp wontons are much smaller, the wonton skins are really delicate. The wontons aren't too flavorful but with the soup it's tasty. I added my own wonton noodles to the dish so it was more filling. The braised beef noodle soup is really good. Broth is very flavorful. Big chunks of beef. Saw the sharing on Xiaohongshu so I decided to try the Shanghai cuisine. It feels like a family own business and they are quite nice and responsive. The service was good. I went in a Wednesday evening, they were busy but the service was quick in general. I ordered the shaoxing chicken. I thought it would be drunken chicken because of the name of shaoxing rice wine. But there is nothing to do with the wine at least I did not taste any wine inside. The food is not bad and very Shanghai. 4 of us came to this place on a Sunday afternoon around 12PM. The place is L shaped with the bar and bar stools at the entrance and had around 6 tables on the side. 5 of those tables were taken. We were given the last table. There were 2 waiters. After waiting 45 minutes without plates, utensils, napkins, or even any water... 2 other people came into the restaurant and joined their friends. They were immediately given utensils and water. Their orders were also taken immediately. My friend then asked for the waiter and I yelled at him for making us wait this long. His excuse was too many customers (but then how come other people who just came in got served before us? He had no answer, obviously). He took down 3 of our orders and before we even finished, giving him our order, he walks away unapologetically. Another 30 minutes past without any utensils or water or even checking up on us, I personally walk up to the waiter by the entrance and scold him again. Again, same excuse with the too busy but he was obviously not busy enough to assist other customers or chatting it up with the takeout people! In fact, the 2 people who came after us already got their steaming dish of fried rice whereas we ordered cold appetizers (without finishing our ordering process) and no food or utensils had arrived yet! I told him that I would leave because it's obvious our business was not wanted. He told me he already put in 3 of our orders so I stood there and demanded utensils until he started putting a move on it. We ate the 3 appetizers, paid without tip due to no service, and left. Why didn't I leave right away? Because my dad was a waiter and I know how hard waiters work to earn a living so gave them the benefit of the doubt. NEVER AGAIN THOUGH! . The food itself is not bad (not amazing, but not bad). But the service today was crap. Was it an off day? Maybe. Was it only discrimination toward us? I try to be empathetic since there was only one waiter so I continue to wait without complaining. When we got to our table I immediately notice there were only three chairs. He gave a halfhearted apology and said it was because he was busy. We try to be understanding and sat back down and order our food. We were shock to learn that a quarter of the menu was already sold out. His excuse was that they only sell 20 orders a day per dish. Not sure if this is true or he's playing with us. The service proved to be exceptionally slow, as we were compelled to wait for over thirty minutes before being served. However, what I find even more concerning is the behavior of the young employee present on site. After taking my bank card to process the payment, she delayed in returning it to me, which I consider utterly unacceptable. In principle, the payment device should be brought directly to the table to avoid such situations. Subsequently, I left a cash tip. The initial amount was debited immediately, but to my great surprise, I received a notification from my bank the following day at 2 o'clock in the morning informing me that an attempt to debit the same amount had been made. Fortunately, this transaction was refused as I had previously deactivated my bank card. I find this totally unacceptable and am considering reporting these practices. I strongly recommend never entrusting one's bank card out of sight to avoid any risk of abuse or fraud. read more

Overall, the experience wasn't good. As others have mentioned, the service is really slow. I think it's because they're just understaffed with waiters (there was only 1 waitress for all the tables). The food was also just very average - not great, not terrible. The main thing for me was that the place was dirty. We were given plates and cups that clearly weren't washed properly, if at all. My friend and I came here specifically to try the Champion Braised Beef Noodle Soup (Item B1 on the menu). OMG, we were blown away! I haven't had such delicious beef noodle soup since I was in Taiwan over 20 years ago. This beef noodle soup is even better than my mother's! The soup is perfectly beefy, tomato-y, with just the right amount of spiciness. The thin noodles were cooked perfectly al-dente. And the beef was sliced into the perfect thickness, and so tender yet flavorful with the perfect ratio of meat to tendon. I even loved the pickled cabbage. Normally, pickled cabbage is just sour, but theirs is sour with a bit of sweetness and spiciness. I can't wait to come back to eat this beef noodle soup again and try some other dishes. read more

The B1 Champion braised beef noodle soup was amazing, the soup is so rich and flavorful and just a tiny bit spicy. The layers of taste in soup is fantastic, it's beefy with some tomatoes. The thin noodles are perfect too and the super tender beef are thick slices of beef/tendon mixture. My friend and I were actually pretty full when we got here, but we really wanted to try the beef noodle soup. It was really delicious even when we were already so stuffed!
