I considered not leaving this review because I hate being that person but I felt compelled because I know many people rely on Yelp especially while traveling. Let me start by saying Yolk came highly recommended to us by family members who had eaten here during trips to Chicago so between the personal recommendations and Yelp ratings we had high expectations. The restaurant itself and ambience are nice, staff was friendly etc. My first issue was when I ordered coffee and there was no fresh cream available. Our server being kind literally went to the back and brought out a quart of heavy cream lol. The coffee was mediocre. My husband ordered a chocolate peanut butter latte thing which was just gross, he had to send it back, he rarely ever does this. They did comp this off the meal so great. We ordered and our food came promptly. There was a live bug on my sons that plate which freaked him out but I thought we handled it well, we tried to be discrete and alert our server. She was also taken aback and immediately took the plate away. Shortly after the manager came over sheepishly and apologized which was appreciated and offered to take the meal off our tab. Frankly if I was the manager I would've comped the entire meal but hey I'm not the manager. We are nice people and we try to give grace to others so we just kept calm. Here's the thing if the food was remarkable I likely wouldn't have even left this review but guess what it wasn't! The food wasn't even hot and under seasoned. I've had better meals at Cracker Barrel if that tells you anything. The cinnamon roll French toast was probably the best out of everything we ordered if I had to choose. I did appreciate the generous amounts of spinach and mushrooms.. and the eggs were cooked just right :) My mom ordered Pancakes + Blueberry ($5.99 + $1.99) - 3 large multigrain pancakes served with whipped butter, powdered sugar, and warm maple syrup (choice of toppings: cinnamon apples, peaches, blackberries, blueberries, bananas, or fresh strawberries) The multi-grain option is great and the pancakes tasted gritty and healthy :) YUM! They were generous with the toppings, but for 2 dollars a pop - they really should be! Coffee ($2.30) was unlimited, but our server was so busy, I only had 1 or 2 refills. Boyfriend, who loves sweet things, said the Cinnamon Roll French Toast was good, but almost too sweet for him (never would I have imagined that possible). Their skillets are decent, their eggs benedict IS good (but I don't know if i'd hail it as the best in the city like they do...), overall it's just your average brunch place on Michigan. I don't know how these eateries, franchises survive . The food is soooooo bland. No genuine flavor of any sort. The crepes are always kinda grainy and chewy, gummy, rigid . I went here for breakfast on a Sunday morning. The wait time was an hour and a half. Since the place is so popular, I thought the food would be AMAZINGGGGG! Eh, not so much. It was okay, but it didn't stand out. I ordered an iced coffee and their version of the all-star special. The waitress asked me if I wanted 100% maple syrup with my waffle. Sure - why not? I had no idea it was a $2 up-charge until receiving my bill. I didn't have a problem paying the additional fee, but it would have been nice to know upfront. My meal was meh and kind of cold. Many of them intrigued me, but I went with the corned beef hash and eggs. The meal was tasty and the portion was perfect. My cons are that the line to get in was long and the waiting area was very busy and crowded. I also felt the drip coffee was just ok as was the service. First of all, for some people this might be a four star restaurant because of the wait, but since I am not an impatient person, let me tell you that this my friends is worth waiting for. From the service to the food, everything was a big hit for me. After my 10k competition, I had told my parents about this place I saw here on yelp called the yolk. So since the restaurant wasn't far from where the race took place, we walked over to Yolk. As we were approaching the restaurant I saw a lot of people and I mean A LOT and I thought are they waiting or is there patio sitting?? So as we got closer I saw everyone sitting down and yes I knew this was going to be a long wait. I was expecting about more than an hour to wait because there was people waiting inside as well as outside, but surprisingly when I asked the hostess how long the wait was she said 45 mins, and I turn into my parents and told them the wait time and we went ahead and waited. Now, I am pretty sure we waited 45 minutes exact or even less. As we were seated, a young server came and offered us drinks. Her tone of voice and the way she smiled made me smile and feel cozy in the place, I even asked her to take a picture with me. So our drinks came out I had the plain old coffee which was really good, and both my mom and my dad ordered orange juice. After a few minutes she came and took our order. My mom had the Santa Fe Frittata with wheat toast on the side, my dad had the Tour de France, and as for me I had the Egg Benedicts (voted best in town) with red potatoes and fresh fruit. The egg benedicts were amazing. The English muffins were toasted to perfection and the pouched eggs were also perfectly cooked, now top that with some amazing hollandiese sauce and you got a exquisite egg benedicts and the potatoes were perfectly seasoned and cooked. You won't be surprised when I say that Yolk's forte is its eggs. One of the few restaurants whose cooks deliver at the request of an over-medium egg, and make beautifully shaped poached eggs. Favorites include the benedicts and the skillets. I'm not totally in love with scrambled eggs so when I tell you that the omelettes are okay, that probably means they're pretty good. But I'm telling you: there's a reason the place is called Yolk. Choose how you want your main dish and then pick your accompaniments accordingly. Pancakes are nice and fluffly. French toast is good too. My only tiny disappointment is that the corned beef hash is from the can, so I'll steer clear from that dish and remain happy with other options. Yolk offers pretty big portions and manages to have healthy options too. There's a good range of a lunch menu as well. This place is a brunch factory. Both the cavernous space and expressionless waitstaff are devoid of personality. They have a PA system for the host to call the next party, and there is a large, bare area at the front JUST for people to stand and wait. The food was decent, but pretty plain. Why do people flock here? Just because it's the only brunch joint within a 1.5-mile radius? I guess that somebody has to feed all those 20- and 30-something South Loopers after Friday and Saturday nights' revels. I got a Texas fajita omelette: eggs, cheddar, diced chicken, onions, green peppers: enjoyable but not special. I will say that the fruit (cantaloupe, pineapple, orange slices, and watermelon) was very fresh and good. Also, the cinnamon roll was, while on the drier side, very tasty as well, with a non-sugary buttercream icing. I liked the pecan sticky bun too, despite its dryness. We came here because of so many good reviews not sure if we got the wrong items so here is my opinion: Pros: Really good service and the location is great Cons: I got the corned beef hash with some banana pancakes, the corned beef was ok but to be honest didn't like the taste, the banana panckakes texture was like they were not cooked all the way and got super sticky, I got a big chunk and almost throw up. My wife got a chicken salad and the chicken had a weird texture we got worry that It was not cooked correctly and it was not even good. Probably my favorite breakfast in Chicago. I loved this place and can't wait to go back. We went on a sunny Sunday morning and there was a bit of a wait but it was nice so sitting outside was fine. Once we were seated our waitress was very on point with drinks and taking our orders. I opted for the California Omelette which I will highly recommend right now. It was made perfectly and was very flavorful. I'd be hard pressed not to order it again. Potatoes came with it and I requested a side of hollandaise sauce because I am a bit of a sauce nut. It complimented the potatoes well. I thought this place was awesome. The decor was bright and colorful and made you feel happy to be there. I was really looking forward to this coming to this place but the guy at the front of the counter who puts your name on the waiting list is the most terrible, rude person in the service industry I have ever encountered. He flat out yelled at us for wanting to change seats from the counter to a booth. The counter seating was simply too loud with all the noise from the kitchen and utensils clunking. Mind you we did not just get up and go to the booth on our own, we were directed by our server to the booth. This tall guy was so unwelcoming and unkind that I lost my appetite. He was not apologetic and made it seem like it was our fault before even assessing the situation. I understand this place is busy and stressful with all the customers but under no circumstance should you yell at your customers. Inexcusable! This man needs to be fired because he is incompetent at handling the stresses that come with the service industry. People come from far away to visit your restaurant and wait a long time in line. This is my first review for Yolk, but probably my 5th or 6th time here. There is a reason why Yolk is my breakfast joint of choice, time and time again, whenever I'm in Chicago. There is a consistent quality across all of its locations and this one in the south loop is particularly convenient - just off Roosevelt station. I can't do this review justice like the many native Chicagoans that frequent place. I will say that there is not a better breakfast meal than their corned beef hash with eggs done over easy. The fruit, which seems to be seasonal is a nice touch to balance the amount of greasy deliciousness. The service is fantastic as with all Yolk locations. If you're coming with a large party, expect to wait quite a while on the weekends. Otherwise, smaller parties should get through within 30 minutes. Food service is blazing fast but there never seems to be a rush to kick you out despite the droves of people waiting at the door. I can't wait to be back! read more

The wait staff and service all around was amazing, here is why.... we ordered our meals and everything came out in a timely manor, actually quicker than expected!! I ordered a yogurt to go with my breakfast and when it arrived it tasted just like sour cream, I tried to add strawberries to it and nothing worked, so finally I said something and the waiter and manger were so kind to explain what happened and took it off our tab and decided to upgrade me to the "deluxe!!!!" I liked this place- there just wasn't a love connection happening for me. Maybe it was their 45 minute wait on a Sunday morning to even sit in the place. Maybe it was the food that was good but wasn't extraordinary (although the side of hotcakes that we got was pretty close) maybe it was the level of noise in the place, or that I couldn't get a Bloody Mary (I did know this before we entered but a girl can still dream!). But all in all- I think Yolk did a good job in getting me most of what I wanted at a reasonable price- it just won't go on my list of revered brunch spots. I had the Eggs Benedict (my favorite and what I judge all brunch places on) which, while good, was just that. Nothing amazing and I didn't care for the potatoes that came with them. No amount of doctoring up got the potatoes to where I liked them. They were just eh. The best part of my breakfast? Sitting at the counter and watching the food move through. Man- these guys and gals are hopping to serve all those people who have waited. It was like a frenetic dance but impressive. The decor is modern and fresh. Street meter parking is available but know that they have those new meters where you get 7 min for a quarter and you have to pay every day. They will also validate in the garage down the street for $7 for 2 hours. If you can go early or on a day that is not a beautiful weekend day- then give it a try.
