It was our first visit to Oliver's and while we mostly enjoyed the food, we were not fans of the $50 half chicken and subsequent service. We let our server, Aiden know. He took the chicken away, after we'd taken two bites. When we received the bill, it still had the chicken listed, so we asked if it was in our to go bag. Aiden scoffed and said no because we hadn't asked for it to be boxed. Overall, it ruined our experience. If we were still going to be charged, that's fine, but communicate that with customers. If we'd known, we would've given it to someone in need versus paying for something we did not eat. read more

I came here for a birthday outing last weekend, and while the food was outstanding, the service was severely disappointing, especially at this price point. My group was made to feel like an inconvenience - we felt rushed even though we didn't take long to order, or linger after paying, and we were polite while ordering plenty of dishes and drinks. A number of people in our party also work in the service industry, so we try to be mindful of all of these factors. We didn't receive one of the ordered sides, and this was obviously not the server's fault, but a number of items we attempted to order were unavailable (oysters, saturn cocktail, milk & cookies dessert) and it wasn't really acknowledged. Again, this was a birthday reservation and we were brought the check without being asked if we would like to order dessert. Then, when we did order dessert, there was no candle. I understand some restaurants don't provide candles...but a table next to us was given a candle. The cocktails were solid too and paired well with the meal. The only downside was the service. It was a busy night, so things moved a little slower than expected, but the staff was still friendly and attentive when they stopped by. Well color me surprised by the discovery of this hidden gem. We were at the C2E2 convention for 2026 at the McCormick Hyatt and we always like to have a nice quiet dinner on the Thursday after we check in. I always look for something nearby, and Oliver's popped up. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The front of Oliver's is unassuming, but when you walk in, you are greeted by a lovely bar area and small two seater tables in the window. The dining area is down a corridor from the bar area. The decor is quite cute and elegant, with the overall vibe being quire chill[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. As this was our first time at the restaurant, Aidan explained the menu to us. We started out with the caviar service (Osetra noir caviar, crème fraîche, oyster chicharrón). Ok I love caviar but this is the first time I have had it with chicharróns, and that they were made with oysters. Traditionally, chicharróns are made from pork, but these blew me away to the point that I asked for an additional serving. Highly recommend this starter. We also got the Toast Royale (beef fat griddled sourdough and caramelized shallot butter). This was also yummy on its own and with the caviar. Be warned though, this is a huge serving of bread. I needed up taking half of it home. In addition to these two starters we got the Truffle Gnocchi (comté, aged parmesan, and burgundy truffle). The truffle was extra at $29, but was worth it for me. We also got the charred octopus with preserved peppers, fennel and a Szechuan chili oil. The octopus clocked in at $42, but again so worth it for me. It was prepared perfectly, the octopus was tender and melted in my mouth. For dinner, The Doctor and The Queen got the Black Cod with vegetables and they split the cucumber salad. I got the cheeseburger. They both liked their dishes as there was nothing left on their plates. I am not a fish person myself, but they both stated that the fish was well prepared. For me, the cheeseburger was very good and so were those fries. While there are other dinner items on the menu, that burger was giving life and I would definitely get that again. Although I will say I saw a table order the half chicken and that looked really good. I would consider that as a possible entrée as well. For dessert I got the coconut key lime pie to split with The Doctor and The Queen got the malted milk & cookies. I am a sucker for coconut and key lime, but together it was kismet. And we also got an order of the warm chocolate chip cookies on the house. Those were very good and I am saying so as I am not a big fan of cookies per se. Haley and Aidan were the folks that took care of us and they were so nice. They were very attentive and genuinely seemed happy to be working there. One of my friends is obsessed with this restaurant and their burger, so I had to go try. Oh my goodness it is SO good!!! I get the hype, and I see why everyone raves about it! First off, this was the best service I've ever received in my entire life. Truly, nothing topped this. The waiters were genuinely the most kind and fun loving ppl, and they be complimenting your dish choices, giving tips on how to elevate each dish, boxing up our food and putting it at the front desk, giving us pink floral plates because we said we liked their plates.... Just so genuinely kind! To start, we got the truffle gnocchi. Oh my goodness this was the MOST soft and pillowy gnocchi I've EVER had in my entire life. I don't think anything can beat the texture. Not tooo truffle-y either, which is great for folks that don't want to be drowned by that flavor. We also tried the toast royale. It was huge hunks of sourdough griddled with beef fat. This made for a very umami bite with that caramelized shallot butter on the side, but it was a bit heavy for us given how many other carbs we've already ordered. I'd definitely recommend getting this if you're with a big group! The star of the show - Oliver's cheeseburger. Now I'm not one that enjoys salt. This burger was SALTY... and I loved it??!! The salt comes from the 5 year aged cheddar and their sauce, which gave it such a rich and full bite. Let me start by saying the food and drink portion was incredible. We had the truffle gnocchi, the chicken, the crudo, and the Oliver's martini and a French 75. Truly 20/10 for everything. Sadly this was overshadowed by the terrible service. After being sat, I waited over 10 minutes to be greeted by a server, then another 20 to get a cocktail, then maybe 10 to order food. Then a good 20 to get the check at the end. The server was nowhere to be seen and we spent a good amount of the evening looking around trying to find someone to pay attention to us. Oliver's off Wabash is slowly becoming my new favorite restaurant-- the cocktails are delicious, the food is consistently great, and the staff is friendly. I'm so for a 1930s Los Angeles themed restaurant, especially when it is in Chicago. We went here on our first night of our trip, and sat at the bar. We were super excited about this place after reading about the theme and the chef. The knockout item that we tried was the fresh pea risotto. It was creamy and flavorful, and had the right amount of fresh pea flavor. It was so good that I wanted to lick the bowl clean. The country toast with duck fat was just okay. I mean it tasted delicious, but there was not a "wow" factor about it. Same with the salad, the best part is that it contained delicious toasted chickpeas. Drinks were delicious, and we had a phony negroni (non-alcoholic) and a peach gin fizz - which was another amazing and unique item. The service was the only thing that can use improvement. At least at the bar where it was noisy, and felt that the bartenders were struggling to pay attention to take our order and make drinks. Totally understandable since it was a busy night. Located next to the dog park in the heart of south loop, this unassuming front truly feels like a hidden gem. We sat at the bar today but the restaurant is fairly expansive and goes into the back. The decor is open, minimalist, and calm. It felt upscale but homey here. My friend and I shared a lot of plates but we both felt like the truffle gnocchi was the star of the show. However, seasoning and flavor of the beef were lacking, hardly a sear on the patty, and structural integrity of the bun was weak. Fries were like McDonalds (not a knock) but more consistent across every fry - crispy and fluffy. Key Lime Pie had good textbook flavor although the creamy body had a gelatinous surface that I'm still confused by. Creme Caramel pie was surprisingly not as sweet as it should be. The vibe inside is modern, airy, and relaxing, with high ceilings that make the space feel open and inviting. The food was excellent--every bite was full of flavor. The scallops were cooked perfectly, tender with just the right sear, while the fried chicken was juicy and tender inside. If you're not into salty flavors, just skip the skin--the inside was surprisingly mild and exactly to my taste. Service was excellent, attentive without being overbearing. Larry was our waiter and he was super attentive and helpful. He provided some excellent descriptors when asked about the menu which allowed me to make a fantastic decision. I had the burger and fries - excellent! Crispy hot thin fries accompanied with Oliver's sauce and a burger which was juicy and cooked to my order; I left nothing on the plate. My husband had the beef. He was surprised at the amount, 16 oz, but he loved it. Beautiful cut of meat and cooked to his perfection. Since we are tourists, he had to unfortunately leave some behind. I love Oliver's so much! I would be here every other week if I lived walking distance from the restaurant. We originally came to try their burger, but they have so many menu items that are delicious. I loved the thick homemade sourdough bread used for the toast royale and the flavored butter that accompanied the bread. Their appetizer salad was a great portion to share and also very fresh. We both did end up getting the burger as our main meals and loved it. The half chicken would likely be top on my list for next time though. There are several delicious alcoholic and also non-alcoholic cocktails to choose from on the menu. Cocktails featuring whiskey are normally my go to options and they had plenty to pick from in that category. I loved the Hudson Yard. Their Espresso Martini features most of the normal ingredients (vodka, espresso, coffee liqueur), but they also have blueberry in theirs and it compliments it well. This place has been on our "to try" list for a little while now. We were able to get reservations for our anniversary and let me tell you, this place is worth the hype! In fact they delivered one of the best bites I've had this year and it's in contention for the best salad in Chicago. Oliver's is located in a really unassuming building in the South Loop but once you walk in they really deliver on the LA art deco vibes that they strived for. The front has the bar and a few small tables while the back room is spacious. We started with the delightful cocktails. I had a pisco sour and my wife ordered a French 75 (these are really having a moment right now amiright). We started the meal with the salad which seemed so simple yet so balanced. The dressing was great and the textures of the breadcrumbs and cheese were darn near perfect. Speaking of perfect....you MUST order the toast appetizer. It's like giving MJ the game winning shot...a real no brainer. It's like a sourdough cooked in beef tallow, how can that not be good. Then you top it with herbaceous butter...I could've died a happy man that night. We also ordered the fried artichoke Ma which I probably would pass on next time. I ordered the burger which was really solid and my wife had chicken. That sauce that accompanied the chicken was a real hit. To end the night we ordered the cookies and malted milk and I think I ended up on cloud 10. Truly an exquisite experience. I can't recommend Oliver's highly enough. Oliver's in Chicago completely blew me away. This was hands down some of the best food I've ever eaten--like, truly unforgettable. I wish I had more photos, but honestly, I couldn't wait to dive in. Every starter we tried deserves five stars. The toast royale, truffle gnocchi, and fluke tartare were next-level--each bite was packed with umami and just melted in your mouth. I don't even have the words to describe how delicate and flavorful everything was. The octopus was cooked to absolute perfection which can be a challenge for even experienced chefs. I honestly liked the starters more than the mains, but the mains were still delicious. We got the chicken, striploin, and the cheeseburger. Even the cheeseburger and fries--which you'd think would be simple--were the best I've ever had. I was genuinely in awe the entire meal. Drinks were okay--probably better suited for someone who's really into cocktails. The French-ish martini wasn't my favorite, but the blueberry espresso martinis were delicious and super fun. They surprised us with a complimentary hors d'oeuvre for the table and a signed birthday card from the staff, which was such a thoughtful touch. Service was prompt, attentive, and polished. This is the first time that I can recall being told a party of two has less than 90 minutes to dine in at a nice restaurant. It ended up being manageable, but I did feel we were a little rushed. My friend and I decided to try Oliver's on a whim on Friday night. There weren't any reservations available online but we went anyway to see if they had any walk-in availability. Luckily, they had a number of bar seats open so that's where we ended up! The restaurant looks really small from the outside (I've passed by it many times before) but there's actually quite a large space inside. The space is really elegant and I don't know quite how to describe it except that it feels both old-timey and modern at the same time. I loved it! To start, I got the French-ish martini which is outstanding. I don't believe I've had vanilla vodka before and its pairing with the various fruity flavors is simply delightful. The drink description sounds like it'd be on the sweeter side but it actually wasn't, a pleasant surprise! For food, my friend and I shared the tomato risotto and the Oliver's cheeseburger. The tomato risotto had a really nice flavor though I thought it was a bit too salty for me. The meat in the cheeseburger was fantastic; a bit crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. The fries that came on the side had a texture that reminded me of McDonald's fries in a good way, though were also a bit too salty for me. My friend and I have been nonstop eating the past few days so we passed on dessert. My main criticism for Oliver's is the price and portion size. While all the food was quite delicious, I struggle to justify the price of each dish especially when portion sizes are on the small side. The tomato risotto is classified as a main dish but its portion size is probably a measly 8 spoonfuls. I doubt the average adult would be satiated from that. Overall, I would return to Oliver's to try more cocktails but may hesitate to try more items from the dinner menu given the prices. Oliver's is definitely an amazing restaurant. We ordered what felt like all the best dishes on the menu. From starter's we ordered the crudo and the toast royale, both incredibly delicious but the butter from the toast was definitely the show stopper!! From mains we ordered the steak, half chicken, porcini risotto, and the fried chicken and caviar from the special menu. From the sides we ordered the cucumber salad and truffle potatoes. The food was absolutely delicious!! A few things to note and I won't be dinging them for it because I feel in the grand scheme of things, they aren't bad. The batter on the fried chicken was thick, a little to thick for my liking and it made it hard to tell what pieces of the chicken each section was but the chickens flavor and topped with the caviar was delicious. The half chicken, rarely does anyone or restaurant not dry some of the breast out but it wasn't overtly done so it's more of something I notice but I feel it happens everywhere! The stars, the steak, risotto, toast, and cucumber salad. I would definitely order the half chicken again as well. The service was top tier, and I mean it was really really good, from our server to the server assistants. The ambiance was great and I personally enjoyed how it didn't feel crowded.
