Walked over to Buttercup after checking into my hotel in Chicago to grab a coffee and fire up the old laptop and get some work done. Though usually one for a hot coffee, it was steamy hot out so I went for an iced vanilla latte with oat milk and was wildly impressed. I was going to sit for a bit so had the latte for there and it was icy cold and the vanilla flavoring was brilliantly paired to the really good espresso notes within the latte. I also went for a Financier, which is a gluten-free banana bread sort of loaf and this was downright silly how good it was. It had a rich banana and sort of caramel flavor to it and as a gluten-free pastry option was one of the finest that I have had. Love that the coffee shop had just about every seat full with people doing work, studying, reading and catching up and the spot was a true neighborhood gem sort of location. Awesome spot! read more

Such a cute and cozy cafe! It's a great spot to get some work done, and the service was super nice. You order at the counter, and the server helping us was really patient. The Pistachio Mocha (8.5/10) had a great mocha flavor and the espresso strength was perfect. Not too strong or too light. Loved this one. The Lavender Sea Salt Latte (8/10) had a nice lavender flavor, and I liked that I could actually taste the espresso without it being overpowering. The Bacon, Egg & Cheese Breakfast Sandwich (7/10) is only available Saturday and Sunday. The egg was soft, the bacon was crispy, and the brioche bun was nice and soft. I've been to this place a few times since it opened, and I even visited its predecessor. I can honestly say that at first, I was a little turned off by the contrast between the two. However, this place has definitely grown on me. I really like the quaint feel of the space. The drinks are strong, but still very well crafted, and the wait staff are always kind and attentive. It has a comfortable atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy yourself. It's not quite my Cheers, but it's definitely a place where you can let your hair down from time to time. read more

Yelp Review I love this local spot and have always enjoyed coming here. My only wish is that there was a better way to communicate with the bar staff. This is actually the second time I've needed to speak with someone and couldn't get a hold of anyone. This weekend, I accidentally left my charger behind, which was totally my fault. Of course, I tried calling, but by the time I went back, I was told that my charger had been given to my group. My group was only three people sitting at one table, and we all left together. However, the place was packed with people who were there for the Usher/Chris Brown tour, so I'm assuming they thought everyone was together. I love supporting this spot, but having a way to actually reach someone when you need assistance would make the experience even better. read more

Very aesthetic color scheme and overall a beautiful intimate coffee shop. The tiramisu latte ( it goes by another name) was delicious but their regular latte was just alright. Everyone who works here is really kind and welcoming. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious. The eggs are really fluffy and the sauce on top is tasty. The beverages are great too. I had an iced lavender sea salt latte and it was really refreshing. I also enjoyed the iced pistachio mocha latte. Subtle flavors and really smooth. I also had the Matcha Shakerato and it was amazing! I loved the amaretto in it and the flavors really pop. I loved the glasses that the drinks were served in as well. I love the concept here. It's a coffee shop/cafe/bakery by day and bar/lounge by night. I look forward to returning in the evening to experience more cocktails. (It's an amaro focused cocktail bar.) My first review as a new Chicago resident! This spot did not disappoint. The ambiance is very cozy and the server could not have been more kind. I came with my husband for a late drink and dinner and loved everything we had. Not pictured was the vanilla gelato. It's nice to have another coffee shop in south loop and this place is very cute! Cozy vibes and the service is nice and fast enough. My friends and I each tried their specialty drinks and i got an everything croissant. We had high expectations because everything looked so good on the menu. Unfortunately none of us particularly enjoyed anything we got. All of our drinks just tasted like milk (both iced and hot options) and my croissant was oddly sweet because of the filling and I didn't love that. The pastries are actually being shipped in from elsewhere (they have exactly the same one in coffee shops out in Naperville too lol). Which leaves nothing special here. It's also very small so it gets crowded and swamped pretty fast. You're really constantly stepping out of someone's way when you're just waiting for you order, so that's not ideal either. A friend tell me about this spot because I love a good coffee moment! My initial impression was very good. It is a very cute shop that feels both modern and cozy/traditional. I love the boots near the front windows and the window coverings give it such a classic feel. I ordered a pistachio latte and the half kale Caesar salad. When I sat down, I noticed that the table next to me was still dirty from the previous customers. The shop didn't seem very busy so I was a little thrown off about why that hadn't been cleaned up yet. After sitting down and putting on my headphones, my name was called to grab my latte so I had to go back up to the counter to get it but I noticed that the very next order was taken to the table for the customer. That threw me off a bit and made me wonder why there was a difference. When my salad was ready, it was brought to me. Some consistency would be nice. I also noticed when I got my latte that I was just giving the cup, no saucer underneath which felt strange but also the cup was messy. Coffee had dripped down the sides and the barista did not clean it up so the presentation suffered. The salad however was beautiful and very tasty. The anchovy on top was so flavorful! It was my favorite part and made me wish there were more in the salad. The price wasn't terrible; what tip I paid about $22 for the coffee and salad. I love the choice of music, relaxing and calm which makes a great environment for reading/working or just taking a moment. Overall, this is a place that I would give a second chance and hopefully some of the things that were not great will have improved. read more

I'm so glad there's another coffee shop in the neighborhood! This spot if small but so cute! They really make good use of the space small tables in the front, a couple high top booths and then single bar seating towards the back. Their menu isn't large but it has a good selection. And I am guessing they rotate their menu or change it up as the seasons change too. They do have a small food menu too. The display case is by the cashier. What an absolutely adorable cafe in south loop!! Came here for breakfast with a friend and ordered an iced dirty maple sea salt chai and it was really delicious and served in the cutest diner milkshake glass! I also ordered the egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and the garlic sauce made the sandwich so incredible! The egg was very fluffy and the cheese was melty with a toasted bun! Very cute new place in South loop! It is kind of small so seating is kind of tight especially if you are working. It's a cafe until 2pm and then Tuesday onwards it reopens again as a restaurant so will definitely go back to try out their dinner menu. I had the iced matcha lassi which was kind of sweet. As someone who is indian, I was intrigued by the lassi part since that is milk based in our culture. The ham & cheese croissant was heated up and pretty good. Not sure what to think of this place. It's clearly a popular spot among the younger crowd (18-34), so they're doing something right - I visited at 5:30 on a Friday evening, and it was at full capacity by 6. There's a happy hour menu until 6 that people don't seemingly utilize because it was dead when I came in, but I did by ordering the half charcuterie plate. It was ok: 3 meats, breadsticks, a soft cheese and a jam. The breadsticks didn't reallly blend well with the board for me, and for $15 happy hour price, I still felt a bit robbed. The drinks were good though - the Martino cocktail is wildly strong, but the presentation didn't make sense to me, as it didn't add any taste to the cocktail. The bar is fully staffed, and the servers are kind enough - not neglectful, but not overly friendly. I'm giving them a 4 because there's nothing egregious that they did, but I'm not sure if I'd come back. read more

I just love how they have revitalized this space. This isn't just a coffee shop or bar, but it's truly gives a boutique Café vibes which exactly what South Loop needs. This little cute coffee shop by day and cocktail bar at night is pretty decent. My friends and I came here in the afternoon for coffee/girls hang out. I thought the coffee was a little bit more sour for my liking which is fine because we were just there to chill while checking out this new place in Southloop. I ordered the lavender sea salt latte, but didn't really taste much of the sea salt part in the lavender was just a little light for my preference. The coffee shop part closes at 2 PM so we decided to grab brunch somewhere in the area because we wanted to come back at 4 PM for their cocktail drinks. For the boozy drinks, I decided to try the buttercup drink which was ridiculously amazing. I originally wanted Brandon's milk punch, but they said that they were out of it until Tuesday so I just went with their signature drink. I thought the drink would be like a slushy because it says shaved iced cocktails but instead it's a drink with shaved ice on top, which was very IG worthy. I honestly will come back with friends to just grab a drink and chill. Maybe if they have an actual dinner menu I will come back for food too but otherwise this is definitely a very solid place for coffee and/or cocktails depending on what you're in the mood for. read more

Checked out Buttercup during their first week open for Happy Hour. My friend was very excited to have a new place in the neighborhood, and the experience did not disappoint. The interior is cute and cozy, and it definitely transitioned nicely from daytime to after work vibes. We had a couple of drinks on special from the Happy Hour menu (Meletti Spaghetti and Americano Doppio) before moving to a monthly special riff on a Negroni, which our server helpfully had split into two glasses. The amaro list is long and super impressive (would love to do a flight/tasting scenario of some of these), and the Anchovy Toast was delectable. I would be remiss if I didn't note that the riff on the Old Fashioned was excellent; I don't think I fully appreciated how thoughtful the classic cocktail renditions were until tasting my friend's (and devolving into full on jealousy). This place just opened up in South Loop and I'm excited to have a go-to neighborhood coffee spot! The service is great. They let you bring your dog inside as long as you take your food/drink to-go. The coffee is pretty good. I liked the cappuccino better than the pistachio latte as the latte lacked flavor. I tried the everything croissant which was interesting. It was super flaky--just the way I like it, but I did not expect a savory pastry to be sweet in the middle--a little odd. I will be going again to try more pastries! Love this place for the neighborhood and the fact that they are open until 10 on weekdays!! It's still somewhat new and there are some kinks I hope management works out! 1. During the cafe hours it's always messy. I wish they had an attendant similar to what Cafe Deko has...someone who clears off the tables, booths, etc. The booth seats are always covered in croissant flakes and it's annoying to clean off the table and chairs when I come in. 2. They always run out of food around noon. Given that the cafe closes around 2pm, I wish there were more food options. 3. I don't love the food in the Amaretto bar. The pizza for example is so soggy. Given that the bar menu is relatively small, I'm hoping they improve. Vitalogy in Printer's Row does a great job at having delicious food and only a few items. I hope these items are addressed, if so this place will pop even more! read more
