Visited this cute Armenian cafe a few days after they opened. This definitely skews Russian influence (Armenia proper) vs. the Armenian diaspora cuisine that trends more Middle Eastern. I decided to order most of what they offer to have a good sampling which I shared with a friend. We started with several savory options which were heated up for us and brought to our table on beautiful and ornate pottery plates: - Zhingyalov Hats - this was our favorite item here. I've had Armenian food before but have never heard of this or had it. Sort of like lavash pockets filled with delicious finely diced herbs and greens (parsley, spinach, onions, etc). Tasted so bright and fresh and the bread was so perfect that we had to get another one which we quickly devoured. - Lahmajun - traditional Armenian flatbread-like dish. Served with small lemon wedges to squeeze on top. This version meets the mark. There are two varieties in the freezer if you want to walk out with a stack of them. They're cooked so you just need to reheat/microwave. - Khachapuri - yummy cheese-filled pastry. Dough was very nice. Similar to cheese boereg. Cheese could use a bit more character. - Mini Kufta - never really been a fan of this bulgur-wrapped dish that is common at Lebanese restaurants. This was sort of dry to me. I'd skip it next time. - Olivie Salad - similar to potato salad with finely diced potatoes, hard boiled eggs, and small peas. Was a fine accompaniment to our other items. They were out of the Sarma unfortunately. I got the Tan (yogurt drink) which was fine. Was served in a small glass and with ice which was not ideal. Non-carbonated version thankfully. For dessert, I took the following items to go: - Baklava - there were a few versions to pick from. Go with the "homemade" diamond-shaped ones in my photo. Nailed it. Delicious. - Gata - essentially a peasant cake. Sweet and simple. - Cigarette & circular baklava-like dessert - both pretty dry and just ok. Skip the circular one. - Mikado - multi-layered chocolate pastry. Sort of like a compressed Napoleon that is very chocolatey. - Honey cake - spongier/fluffier and more honey taste than Sharbat's version which is much more Napoleon-like (dry pastry layers with cream in between). The staff could not have been friendlier. I saw one take over a complimentary peach nectar drink (in a tiny solo cup with a small bendy straw) to a little girl eating with her parents. Tons of packaged items to leave with like fruit preserves, pickled veggies, candies and a packed fridge and freezer with Armenian string cheese, cured meats, Lahmajun, Manti (says Russian-style), and more. They just opened, so I'll want to visit them again after they get a few weeks under their belt. I think they should consider narrowing down to some of the best options and focusing on those, particularly with the sweet pastries. Maybe offer two varieties of Lahmajun (one spicier) and occasionally change up the cheese filling in the Khachapuri to keep things interesting. Also consider putting the savory items on display or including pictures on the menu for the unfamiliar diner. Approximately 6 tables inside and one small two-seater outside. Friendly staff, great coffee and sweets, and a solid selection of Armenian products (both frozen/refrigerated and boxed/canned goods). Simple but nice interior, with some low-volume Armenian music to set the mood. You can tell this place was a labor of love. As an Armenian, I can say that the Armenian coffee here is among the best I've had. For those who are new to Armenian culture/cuisine try the lahmajun - it's like a flatbread/pizza hybrid and it's a crowd pleaser. Moving from LA to DC, it was a bit of a culture shock to arrive somewhere with barely any Armenian presence, so I'm happy that this place exists. They're doing a great job of catering to the surrounding community with their customer service and family-owned vibe. read more

Yerevan Market & Cafe is fantastic and a wonderful addition to the Adam Morgan Neighborhood. Parents- this place is totally kid friendly!!! The only thing is you will have to leave your stroller outside or carry it down two steps. They have a little children's corner which is so nice. There are a few toys and puzzles, coloring sheets, a coloring wall, and a kid sized table and chairs. Also, there is a baby changing table inside the (exceptionally clean) bathroom! This would be a lovely place to come for coffee with your child. The baked goods are delicious. We tried the baklava for $3 and the honey cake for $6.50. The baklava was good but the honey cake was amazing. We were meant to share but I wanted to eat the whole thing myself! Just the right amount of sweetness, soft and fluffy, simply divine. Would 100% recommend. The armenian coffee is strong and the perfect pairing for the sweet treats. Also, the cherry juice for children is tart and sweet, your kid will love it! They have cute red cups and bendy straws. Overall, definitely a 5 star place, there is something for everyone here. They even have gifts for both adults and children, as well as both refrigerated and shelf stable food products to bring home. I'm so happy this place exists. There are virtually no Armenian restaurants or bakeries anywhere in DC, and the prime location in the heart of Adams Morgan is definitely a plus. We stopped by for dinner last night and came back for breakfast this morning to try their Armenian coffee. Although there are some areas where they can improve, overall we really enjoyed the delicious food, great service, and the comfortable setting. First thing to note: this is a cafe. There are no entrees on the menu--there are appetisers and desserts. They also sell some pre-packaged Armenian and Eastern European food. They are currently working on getting their liquor license, so don't come expecting alcohol. But they have a good range of non-alcoholic drinks. That Armenian coffee is strong! And really good. Also try the Armenian 'mountain' herbal tea (with thyme). They also have a savoury yogurt-type drink, mineral water, and juices. I wasn't very impressed with the pomegranate juice but I'm sure they have other better options. The food is good--not amazing (the dough of most of pastries is a bit dry), but I did really love the home-style baklava, the dolma, and the Russian salad 'vinegrette'. But what I loved the most was the atmosphere--a simple but tastefully appointed interior, and the great service. This is the type of place where I could easily spend hours chatting with a friend or stop by for a morning coffee and pastry. Overall, this place is unique and is definitely worth checking out. A hidden location. Took a moment to find. It's across from the library and there's no immediate parking. Wasn't really what I expected/ it's a very tiny spot with several foldable wooden chairs and tables. I would say 95% of the patrons were on laptops. Not really ideal if you're wanting to eat because there was no place to sit and they had to take out another table and chairs directly behind the cash register to accommodate. I can't say I saw anyone eating or drinking anything and they were engrossed in their laptops and in no rush to leave. Some even took up entire tables using bags and purses on the empty chairs. Anyhow, we were starving and they were out of lahmajun. I got the kofta and he got the basterna sandwich. The plates came out and I honestly thought they were some complimentary aappetizers and then I realized they were the food. My meatballs were tiny. About the size of the frozen meatballs you find in the grocery store. They were cold so that threw me off but I thought they tasted decent. I've had Arabic and Persian and every other kind of kofta and my first experience having it cold. They came on a thin 3x3 sheet of flat bread. And there were 2 total. There wasn't anything else on the plate. The sandwich was also tiny. It was a couple sprigs of rocket lettuce and one slice of meat with some sort of cheese on the bottom and a tiny piece of tomato. Sadly we were both disappointed because he's Armenian and wanting some of his homeland food. It wasn't that it tasted bad but we honestly couldn't understand the portions. They are clearly not made to fill you up but as a finger food appetizer sort. Would I go back? I probably wouldn't. I was really disappointed. I can say the staff was friendly and it was nice hearing people speak Armenian from different backgrounds. The veggie plate took a long time to prepare. Not sure why but we were long finished and afraid of missing our ride. We got a jar of the garlic stems because they were that good. There's a wrapped greens dish called zhingyalov hats v ve that I really enjoyed. Not sure what exactly is in it because the description was vague but I liked it a lot as did he. I read they were wild greens but I would have liked to know some of the ingredients. Sorry was too hungry to take a photo because it came long after we finished and as were got into our transportation. They respond quickly on Instagram. Again, friendly staff but the experience was not at all what either of us expected. His mother didn't eat anything off her plate we brought and that's how I ended up trying the green wrap dish. They do have a nice little selection of Armenian spirits. Their gift shop is a great idea but it looked more like display because the space is so tiny. The market itself was also tiny but j appreciate them making the traditional foods available. I hope they transition into something more focused on food and accommodating diners and not being an internet cafe or a hangout for people to use their space for hours on end. I hope they have success. The cashier was a Russian Armenian and my date is Iranian Armenian so the convo was nice to hear. read more

An absolute gem. Amazing coffee, and all the food and deserts here were amazing. I loved the gata, Lahmajun, zhingyalov hatz and khatchapori. I also recommend getting the Armenian lavash bread and putting the ohanyan basturma inside of it making a little sandwhich it is amazing. There sarma dolma is the next thing I will try looked amazing. Definitely recommend this place must try in DC. read more

The selection isn't huge but very unique, the cafe has plenty of seats to work/study and the staff is super friendly/helpful in making a selection! The market has beautiful Armenian art and souvenirs, foods (salads, frozen goods, buckwheat), teas, juices and more. The only authentic Armenian cafe we've been able to find in the DC area! Yerevan Cafe has a calm, inviting atmosphere with ample seating and natural light in the heart of Adam's Morgan. Stop by for delicious Armenian Coffee, amazing wines and brandy (get the Ararat!), hot snacks, pastries, and a selection of frozen delicacies. The owners are very friendly and host free wine tastings and other events such as book signings and art displays. Definitely a great find, we will be back soon. Yerevan is a hidden gem in the Adams Morgan area of DC. It's a cafe that also includes a small market for Armenian candies, teas and other staples like cheeses and salads. It also has a cool collection of curated items for purchase to support Armenian artists. I especially love the colorful handmade imported cups they serve the coffee in (so much that I purchased a set of 6 to take home with me!) My favorite cafe food items include the Armenian coffee, veggie lovers platter, Mikado and honey cakes. Overall, a cute and clean environment for work on the laptop or meet-up spot with friends for a coffee and bite to eat. If you have any questions about some of the less familiar items, don't hesitate to ask the friendly staff. I would definitely visit again the next time I'm in the area! read more

First of all, I was extremely excited when this cafe opened. It is walking distance from my place, and I was excited of the possibility of having a small local business that will deliver a fresh variation of CIS staple products while introducing the local community to a rich Caucasian culture in process expanding on their palette. Unfortunately, I find it to be a missed opportunity. At the very least for now. I have been there a handful of times, an on every single occasion the same deserts (usually Mikado, Medovik and Napoleon) I ordered were radically different. There is an issue with consistency. Napoleon cake was great when they first opened so I let the overinflated price slide; consequent couple of times I bought it, the cake tasted like straight margarine and left my pallet with lingering greasy texture. Medovik (honey cake), well... missed the main ingredient - mëd (honey), and Mikado was just Godawful, drier than Sahara itself. All of these are $1-2 dollars overpriced yet nothing can justify the price of Mikado that is their priciest and smallest cake on the menu ($7.50 per slice). Sizes varied each time. I mostly ordered those three because every single time I was there they were out of everything that was on their menu. The empty store feel got me triggered and reminiscing of the communist and post-communist shortages. Avos'ka in grandparent's hand. I got my hands on their Olivie(r) salad. The salad has not seen mayonnaise and was made out of yogurt instead. Yogurt clumped up and separated into complete whey as the salad was frozen and then had to thaw. Would not recommend. Still unsure if they make Vinaigrette and Olivie(r) salads (which are btw both originally French yet might differ in one or two ingredients in terms of execution from their original counterparts, same as with T-word baklava vs Armenian pakhlava) in-house or get them delivered from Brooklyn NY together with prepackaged products that usually end up at Eastern European stores such as "Russian Gourmet." The amount of "Armenian" in description under everything that is CIS or Ottoman staple and/or common post-Soviet culture vs truly Armenian takes more away from Armenian culture than adds to it. The customers are thus just left confused. A Ukrainian friend who was with me asked me what Armenian coffee was and my response was:" copper pot boiled coffee with a hint of nationalism that has to rise three times for you to drink it...the coffee does; nationalism is just there to oversee it... and they might just add cardamom... you never know. Depends on the day." (Psssst did not want to use the T-word in the open...) Love the staff. They are always friendly and very genuine. There is something extremely CIS about paying for subpar products. At least service is not CIS and I know I am supporting good people. Will be back. Ps. Please hone in consistency and reconsider Mikado recipe. I think this is only honest review here. Everyone one else just is being nice hoping they survive. Being nice won't keep it open. read more

Pleasant Armenian cafe with a great atmosphere. The staff is so friendly and the environment is perfect for kicking back and relaxing. They also have a quite a few grocery items and some Armenian crafts in the back. Most of the grocery items are fairly expensive, but a lot are actually from Armenia, which isn't something you can find elsewhere in this area. That said, I have to admit I have been a disappointed by the food. The pastries, both sweet and savory, are just a little bit bland. The tea and coffee are good, but the food could really use an upgrade. read more

They also have a small shop in the back for that cultural spirit in you.
