I love Yamazaki!!! This specific location is my go to I go regardless of how busy it gets. Their lines do get long esp during morning rush and the weekends but its a testament to how good their bakery is. Even during busy hours the employees are quick and friendly I've never had to wait long to get my order. Everyone working there is always so nice and kind no matter the time of day. They have amazing fresh breads, pastries, and buns. My favorite things to get are the curry donut, curry bun, tres leches, and jalapeno hot dogs! They heat up the items for you as well so everything is always warm if you'd like it. Everything is reasonably priced as well and I havent had one thing that tasted bad there. I will continue to go to Yamazaki as a proud regular!
Tons of cute, delicious, and affordable pastries! They have both sweet and savory treats from donuts, to cakes, and steamed buns. They also have a wide variety of freshly baked bread. Line can get long but moves fast! Also very affordable coffee. Cheapest you can find in Little Tokyo. Stopped by here day zero of Anime Expo and stocked up on breakfast for the week. Employees are the sweetest bunch you'll ever meet.
This place is so cute and quick to be in! It's right in the heart of Little Tokyo. There's so much to choose from, coffee, desserts, break, little buns, drinks, and ice cream. Like hello? I had a mini tart which was $2.50. It was sooooo good. The tart wasn't too sweet. It was cold. And the custard tasted like cherry at the end. It's the perfect little sweet treat to beat this heat! Service is okay. There's a blonde who's a little rude, I get the heat gets the best of us. But let's keep it chill. Other than that this place is a must try! Visit and try the tart!
This no frills bakery is in the heart of Little Tokyo LA. Counter service and there is a minimum $10 purchase to use credit. They had a variety of steamed buns, desserts, and breads. I was hoping to grab a fruit cream sando but unfortunately they were out for the day. We ordered the strawberry snow pie, niku man, and a curry doughnut. Everything was quite tasty, however, I wish the curry doughnut was warmed up. There was some limited seating outside in the shade
Tbh I dont understand the hype from the other yelp reviews. I was craving sweets but wanted an affordable option near DTLA. I was delighted by the variety of desserts they had so I ended up going to Yamakazi. I got the tres leches, tiramisu, and chocolate eclair. I was disappointed by all of them. None were authentic and just used the same cream in all three deserts. Pretty much tasted like nothing. The eclair and tiramisu were the biggest misses. Eclair was dry and the chocolate was hard and falling off. Tiramisu was flavorless since it was 90% cream and then a super thin layer of coffee soaked cake which tasted too bitter. Only good thing is the cheap prices but personally, not even worth it.
If there is bread in heaven, it might taste like the fluffy, softly sweet bread in their steamed buns fresh out of the steamer! We tried the nikuman and curryman, and both were outstanding! The nikuman had a meat (chicken?) and veggie filling that was crunchy and slightly sweet and salty, while the curryman had a traditional Japanese curry filling that was tasty with the perfect amount of spices. They perfectly warmed both body and soul on a chilly LA morning. If I lived nearby, I'd eat these every day! We also tried the yuzu cream pan, which was also pretty epic. The topping was a little crunchy, complementing the soft bread and creamy and smooth tart filling. This is definitely my new favorite Japanese bakery in the US! I just wish I lived a little closer to it.

Located in the Japanese Village Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, Yamazaki Bakery is one of the many popular destinations for people who are interested in trying Japanese style baked products and snack foods. The legacy of this bakery in the LA area represents an intersection of traditional Japanese baked products and LA style food preferences! Some of their menu items include limited to soft bread loaves, sweet pastries, as well as savory steamed buns. It is also one of the many places you can stop at while shopping or dining at the many other shops and restaurants in Little Tokyo. The menu at Yamazaki Bakery is one that is most notable! There are a variety of baked goods available at Yamazaki (e.g., the green tea roll cake and the strawberry cream roll), there are also other classic options like (e.g., cream puffs, matcha cream puffs) in addition to the some other unique options at Yamazaki (i.e., the curry filled bun, the nikuman steamed buns, and the jalapeno cheese dog). In addition to these traditional options, the light fare offered by the bakery (e.g., the fruit cream sandwich) provides a viable alternative as well! There is a second location in South San Pedro Street with similar lineup of fresh breads and treats. While we visited Yamazaki Bakery, we ended up getting the following Apple Cheesecake Baked Cheesecake Curry Bun The apple cheesecake and the baked cheesecake tasted very similar. There was a lemon base to both cheesecakes. The Apple did have some apple flavoring in it though, but I felt the lemon was the highlight flavor of the cheesecake. Our favorite was the curry bun! It was packed with flavor. There are some tables you can sit at in the Japanese Village Plaza. Luckily it wasn't busy early Saturday morning! The service at Yamazaki Bakery was fantastic!!
The best buns! Worth coming to little tokyo just to enjoy one (or two ) of their curry buns. Theyre so fresh, fluffy and are nicely filled. Great, quick service. We tried some of their other baked goods and really enjoyed the yuzu cream pan, it was a yuzu style concha with cream filling. We are definitely going try to visit anytime we are in the area.
Pretty popular bakery located in the Japanese Village Plaza. Nested in the corner right in front of the gazebo/stage area, it's popular for steamed buns, cakes, and ice cream. They also offer parking validation for the parking structure, with a minimum purchase of $10. I like getting their curry buns, tiramisu cake, and ice cream cones. They also have bread packaged to-go for you to take home. There's 2 counters to pay so make sure you don't just wait in the longest line. The inside area is quite small so take caution on busy days!
Yamazaki Bakery serves food and drinks inside of their bakery. They also have a small stand near the exit where they just serve buns. The line moves quickly, but this is a very popular spot in the Little Tokyo plaza area. We ordered an iced hojicha latte and nikuman. I like that you can buy little bites from so many different places in this area and walk around and eat, rather than just going to one spot. The hojicha latte was good and refreshing. The nikuman was tasty, but the filling was not my favorite. It was very liquidy on the inside and not as firm as I would typically expect. It also had a lot of either leeks or green onions or some long green vegetable. The texture was a little strange, but it was still enjoyable.
It's been a few years since I've been here. Excellent customer service from the staff, pastries are fresh and good. They accept cash or cards. Cool little bakery. Prices are moderate.
Terrible customer service. "Athalia" who was at the register skipped us twice in favor of customers who came in the opposite door for service, calling everyone else saying "next in line" when we were waiting patiently for our turn. She then proceeded to blame us, saying we should have stepped forward more-- even though we were being repeatedly cut off by other people who she chose to serve over us. When my husband told her we had been waiting, she claimed she wasn't at fault whatsoever. We asked her name, then she followed up by saying "well what's your name?" It was awful. We are Little Tokyo locals, and we will be switching to Dolce cafe and Okayama Kobo from now on. Don't waste your time here, we won't either and we will be telling our local friends about this too. The pastries were stale.
Delicious to go/handheld food and fast service. We tried: 1 tres leches - 10/10 perfect. light and airy with so much milk soaked to the top. i got this last year and bookmarked the location because this and their food is so good. Taco man - Reminded us of taco bell seasoning. 10/10 Niku - 4/10. Expected more pork, too much veggie. at first i thought they gave me the mushroom and veggie because the mushroom flavor was so strong. Pizza - Tomato sauce and pepperoni with corn throughout. 10/10. Park in the Village Plaza Mall lot! If you spend $10 in the bakery, you can get your parking validated. I made the mistake of parking in Jo's lot and my short visit was $12 for parking... The selection of baked goods were great at opening, but some of the items I had my eye on based on Yelp photos weren't in the cases yet. I was disappointed that not every item is available when they open. Items are very affordable and tasty. I had the chocolate cream puff, and while it was good, it wasn't 5 star amazing. read more
3 Stars = "OK" and that was what it was. Service was good even though it was busy. I heard about their steamed bun being good so the side quest of the day was to get some. We ended up with a chicken, pork and beef one. They were piping hot and the bread itself was nice and soft. But the filling was very mushy until the more meatloaf like texture that I'm used to with these types of buns. I was not a fan of any of the buns. The plain bread part was great, but the filling was just mush and salty. Out of the 3, I would say the pork one was the better one. read more

This place came in handy while I was in DTLA before I was heading to meet friends for Happy Hour in West Covina. It's a tiny shop but had some nice cakes, pastries and breads. A favorite go-to whenever I am in Little Tokyo. The shop is a little small but there are three registers and service is quick and efficient. The people are friendly and service is good. I always enjoy getting their an donut (red bean paste), curry donuts, and the occasional cream pan or surprise choice. If you have a favorite bread I recommend coming a bit early because sometimes they sell out quickly. Also if you are in the mood they sell ice cream, cakes, and warm meatbuns (nikuman) too! Everything I've tried is always a hit, but fair warning the curry does have a bit of a kick. They do have a second shop nearby but I have not been there so I can't tell you if it's just as good or not yet. read more

I love coming here ! They always have good little things to snack on or have really yummy desserts. Even if you just want an ice cream they have it! I really like their drinks & the service is really fast. From savory to sweet they have it! It's really a line to enter order and exit, can't really linger in there to long especially when the line is forming behind you. Cute little bakery that I'd recommend. read more

I tried their fruit cake and apple turnover. The fruit cake had a soft texture and a delicate flavor, with just the right amount of sweetness. I really enjoyed it. The apple turnover wasn't my favorite, but I still found it enjoyable. I would definitely buy the fruit cake again. read more

I come here often for the steamed buns! They're so fluffy and don't skimp on the filling. There's definitely been times it's a little too steamed lol, like really wet and flat? Thankfully that is rare! I purchased the matcha latte and unfortunately it is too sweet. I believe they use a sweetened matcha powder. Their pastries are also fresh and affordable. This place typically has a loooong line, especially in the morning! I'd say it's worth the wait, I always get various items when doing a review to see what the quality is across the board. Across the board the items I tried were outstanding! I had a curry donut toooo but it didn't make it to the photoshoot. Definitely unique, and I highly recommend it. read more
Was strolling in the plaza and saw this huge line at this bakery. We wanted to get in on that and see what's good about them. After abit of a wait, entered the shop (long and narrow space) and grab a drink. We looked at their limited menu and the popular item seem to be their large steamed buns. Looks interesting but we decided against the buns because we were planning on saving appetite for dinner later. Even tho there is a long line, it was organized and moves fast. Enter one way and continue in a single line through the shop and exit the back door so that there is only one flow for traffic. Made it easier and efficient. All items on display looks so pretty and tasty. I really wish I should had grab a bun. I did get a drink to hydrate from all that walking. Was refreshing. read more

Located in central ish area of Tokyo town in dtla. Small cart stand outside the bakery. Smelled good, prices were very reasonable. Lady who helped us with our order, was kind and helped us choose which get.it was soft and fluffy and a decent amount of pork and veggies. read more
Whenever we're in Japantown, I've always passed by this bakery but never gone in because of the long line. This time there was no line so I popped my head in to see what they had to offer. This is not a fancy bakery by all means. You go in, order and make your way out. We ended up getting a loaf of their Superior Bread which is basically Hokkaido milk bread. My daughter enjoyed this the next day for breakfast and she said it was delicious and very soft. I was also intrigued to see that they have croissant cubes so I ended up getting that too. It was filled with cream and red bean. I should've got another one! We'll definitely return to try their other goodies when we're back in the area. read more

It's a small shop, kinda cramped, but that's the vibe...like you're supposed to stand in line, order, get your stuff & go. It's fine. The customer service is friendly and efficient. I've decided this is my favorite place to get a Matcha Latte. It's creamy and sweet, not bitter at all...and perfect for someone like me who enjoys sweet drinks. I pair it with the Curry Bao--fluffy, pillowy with the yummy filling. Okay, it's pretty much the perfect little breakfast when I'm in this area. Find a bench in the plaza and enjoy the atmosphere of Little Tokyo LA. If you have more of a sweet tooth, I suggest the Red Bean Bao. That's delicious too. read more

Steamed buns smelled good. I ordered one each of the An Man (sweet red beans), Niku Man (pork & veggie), Pizza Man (pepperoni & corn), and Taco Man (beef & veggie). The An Man was overly sweet. Just wrapped up the summit down the street and needed a quick bite. Conveniently located next to parking garage. There was a short line, so that was my sign it was good. Lots of choices but settled for a savory steam bun, sweet baked bun and a cream puff. Cashier was very nice. Indoor space was snug, but lots to choose from bakery items and drinks. Few tables outside to enjoy your goods. The steam bun was hot, savory and delicious. The cream puff was chewy, cream was more of a custard like texture. Not my favorite. The baked sweet bun was a lot denser than expected, but the Yuzu cream filling was tasty. read more

Do they have a large selection of mochi? Seems harder and harder to find authentic, freshly made mochi.
Unfortunately no, the last mochi place shut down a while back apparently. There is a great mochi shop across the street from the village though!
I think everyone reviewed about cakes and hot buns. Please let me know about cold sandwich such as tamago ( egg ) sandwich, tuna sandwich, ham vegetable sandwich, and mix sandwich! How do you compare with other expensive Japanese sandwich shops?
Personally I don't think they compare... expensive sandwich shops will always have the better ingredients Yamazaki cold sandwiches are tasty but nothing compared to a shop that specializes in sandwiches
Do you guys do custom orders? We are looking for mini hotdog and mini slider buns for school lunches. Would be buying in bulk periodically throughout the school year?
They do make custom orders it would be something needed to be approved by a manager not too sure on these items but it never hurts to go in and ask for a manager to inquire about a wholesale order :)
Do they sell whole cakes?
Yes. They sell round cakes for about $40 and roll cakes for less. They usually have a couple available of either kind. I love buying a whole cake for myself and just stuffing my face with it. The roll cakes are light and whip-creamy so they're not…
Are there any vegan / gluten-free options?
They said they don't have gluten-free nor vegan items. I did see them have tofu nuggets about 2 years ago but haven't seen them since.
