3 Stars = "OK" and that was what it was. Service was good even though it was busy. I heard about their steamed bun being good so the side quest of the day was to get some. We ended up with a chicken, pork and beef one. They were piping hot and the bread itself was nice and soft. But the filling was very mushy until the more meatloaf like texture that I'm used to with these types of buns. I was not a fan of any of the buns. If there is bread in heaven, it might taste like the fluffy, softly sweet bread in their steamed buns fresh out of the steamer! We tried the nikuman and curryman, and both were outstanding! The nikuman had a meat (chicken?) and veggie filling that was crunchy and slightly sweet and salty, while the curryman had a traditional Japanese curry filling that was tasty with the perfect amount of spices. They perfectly warmed both body and soul on a chilly LA morning. If I lived nearby, I'd eat these every day! We also tried the yuzu cream pan, which was also pretty epic. The topping was a little crunchy, complementing the soft bread and creamy and smooth tart filling. This is definitely my new favorite Japanese bakery in the US! Located in the Japanese Village Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, Yamazaki Bakery is one of the many popular destinations for people who are interested in trying Japanese style baked products and snack foods. The legacy of this bakery in the LA area represents an intersection of traditional Japanese baked products and LA style food preferences! Some of their menu items include limited to soft bread loaves, sweet pastries, as well as savory steamed buns. It is also one of the many places you can stop at while shopping or dining at the many other shops and restaurants in Little Tokyo. The menu at Yamazaki Bakery is one that is most notable! There are a variety of baked goods available at Yamazaki (e.g., the green tea roll cake and the strawberry cream roll), there are also other classic options like (e.g., cream puffs, matcha cream puffs) in addition to the some other unique options at Yamazaki (i.e., the curry filled bun, the nikuman steamed buns, and the jalapeno cheese dog). A favorite go-to whenever I am in Little Tokyo. The shop is a little small but there are three registers and service is quick and efficient. The people are friendly and service is good. I always enjoy getting their an donut (red bean paste), curry donuts, and the occasional cream pan or surprise choice. If you have a favorite bread I recommend coming a bit early because sometimes they sell out quickly. Also if you are in the mood they sell ice cream, cakes, and warm meatbuns (nikuman) too! Everything I've tried is always a hit, but fair warning the curry does have a bit of a kick. The line moves quickly, but this is a very popular spot in the Little Tokyo plaza area. We ordered an iced hojicha latte and nikuman. I like that you can buy little bites from so many different places in this area and walk around and eat, rather than just going to one spot. The hojicha latte was good and refreshing. The nikuman was tasty, but the filling was not my favorite. It was very liquidy on the inside and not as firm as I would typically expect. After abit of a wait, entered the shop (long and narrow space) and grab a drink. We looked at their limited menu and the popular item seem to be their large steamed buns. Looks interesting but we decided against the buns because we were planning on saving appetite for dinner later. Even tho there is a long line, it was organized and moves fast. Enter one way and continue in a single line through the shop and exit the back door so that there is only one flow for traffic. Made it easier and efficient. Whenever we're in Japantown, I've always passed by this bakery but never gone in because of the long line. This time there was no line so I popped my head in to see what they had to offer. This is not a fancy bakery by all means. You go in, order and make your way out. We ended up getting a loaf of their Superior Bread which is basically Hokkaido milk bread. My daughter enjoyed this the next day for breakfast and she said it was delicious and very soft. I was also intrigued to see that they have croissant cubes so I ended up getting that too.
