I had this place recommended to me from a friend and I decided to come here during the week for lunch. When I walked in I was greeted and gestured towards a table. The hostess/waitress was very kind and friendly. Although she spoke limited English and I spoke limited Vietnamese (but learning), we were able to understand each other. I enjoyed the vibe of the restaurant. It seemed a little old school but it just made me enjoy the vibe even more. There was Vietnamese music playing on a TV/speaker, which again just enhanced the experience for me. I loved the authenticity of this restaurant. I ordered the Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm: 1. Bún Đậu Chà Thịt ( vermicelli, tofu, grilled pork pie, pork), (1 phần ) S, which was the portion for 1. For a split second, I thought maybe I should order the 2 phần or portion for two. Let me tell you, I would have not been able to finish a larger portion. I also ordered 1 order of Chả Giò Tôm Cua Xuân Hương (prawn - crab egg rolls). I had even toyed with the idea of ordering the Bò Kho + Bánh Mì. I wish I could have but I'm glad I did not. I did not anticipate getting this full off of these two dishes. For the Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm, I also ordered the Bánh Tráng (Rice Paper), which I used to wrap and roll the various ingredients up and dip into the sauce. Speaking of the sauce, I was warned that the shrimp paste on this particular dish would be stronger than usual. I did think the shrimp paste was more potent however I thoroughly enjoyed it and did not have a problem with the odor at all. Then again, I love durian too, so no surprises there. They will give you a pair of kitchen scissors to cut up the various ingredients like tofu, cakes, and pork. Just wet the rice paper in the water provided to get it damp and soft and then get to rolling. It's way harder than it looks and gives me a new appreciation for the art of making gỏi cuốn. I ate everything on the platter. The Chả Giò Tôm Cua Xuân Hương were excellent, wrapped in lettuce and dipped into a sauce I was unfamiliar with but that was very tasty. I finished all of them as well. After this, I had no more room but I do plan on coming back to try a few more dishes like Bún riêu ốc and Bò kho + bánh mì. This is a great authentic Vietnamese restaurant and if you can get past the aesthetic that some people don't like but which didn't bother me at all, you will discover some outstanding food inside. I got lotsa noodles, maybe more balanced with more broth? I got the blood cube, tofu, tomato and a good chunk of the crab cake in bun Rieu. Lotsa veggies to throw in as well. Tasted salty and concentrated. The service was good though, the two guys are like well functioning staff despite the full tables and constant barrage of needs from the table of old biddies behind me. Well this place caught me by surprise! I was really craving some lettuce wraps, but got the bun rieu also!! To be honest here, this is not the cleanest place to go to. When you walk in you kind of have to seat yourself, it seems like they don't have anyone to clean up. So you walk in with many dirty tables and that awful smell from the fish paste sauce. But hey, we came for the food right? The lettuce wraps were good, I did like the sauce but it might be very strong for those who do not like shrimp paste. The fish cakes were flavorful, tofu was perfectly cooked, noodles went well for carbs, the sliced pork was very tender. I would definitely come here again for that if I was craving lettuce wraps! As for the bun rieu, delicious! I've been looking far and wide for some of this stuff and many restaurants have fell short. It's either it's watered down or Americanized in some way, but this was pretty authentic! Kind of tasted like my mother's bun rieu but of course hers is a lot better. This dish is one of my favorites because it's serve with a fish paste dipping sauce. You can dip and eat as is, or request for Banh Trang (Rice Paper) for an additional charge to make rolls and dip. The only thing I don't like about this dish is one of the two types of fried fish pie it comes with. One has this weird green chewy texture to it that I don't like, so I get double portion of the normal fried fish pie. It also comes with green lettuce and fresh mint leaves. My next favorite here is the Bun Cha Ca Thi La. It's a flavorful fish soup with vermicelli, dill leaves, dill fish cake, white fish, and a stuffed jalapeno. I'm a big fan of dill, so I love the flavor. If you're not a fan of dill leaves, you may want to reconsider ordering this because it is a little strong. This is our favorite / frequent dining place. They have a variety of menu items which not many other places carry. Bun Dau Mam Tom (10/10) - This is their signature menu item which has been very well known among the local Vietnamese community. I have to agree nowhere else can beat their quality and freshness. We've always got this dish and it never once disappointed us. The portion can be considered quite generous for the price. The plate always came out fresh & hot. The meat never has any smell. Banh Canh (9/10) - We decided to try something new after a few recommendations from our friends. Their Banh Canh is very flavorful. We tried Banh Canh Gio Heo (Pork Hock) & Banh Canh Hai San (Seafood). The broths were actually different and they both were delicious! I love their Banh Canh Hai San which has a very delightful broth yet flavorful. I would give it 10/10 if it added a few more toppings. I would prefer some more real meat/seafood over 2 huge fish patties (1 would be just enough). Egg Rolls / Cha Gio Tom Cua (10/10) - This is another signature item that I strongly recommend everyone to try. Their egg rolls come with shrimp & crab mixed in their fillings. It also has its own unique dipping sauce which makes a perfect combination with the egg rolls. (I'm drooling when typing this part of the review lol.) Bun Rieu / Canh Bun (8/10) - This one is also very well seasoned. The amount of everything is well balanced. The "rieu" cube was a slightly hard to my preference. I would like it to be a little bit softer. But overall, I love the quite-authentic flavors in their dishes. We ordered 2 small Bun Rieu Cua and the young gentleman brought out 2 large bowls instead but at leats he apologized and said will just charge us for the small size since its their mistakes! She charged me 2 large bowls then i asked imthey were supposed to be small :). She looked unhappy and tried to blame it on me that "you ate the large size so you have to pay the large size". I stared at her and asked "was it my fault?". The young waitor came up and told her "i already apologized and told them we will charge small size". Now then that b***t finally shut her mouth. Everything in the meal was delicious and steaming hot/fresh when it was brought out. Bun dau mam tom includes sliced pork, fried tofu, cha com, cha ca and the veggies. My boyfriend got addicted to this dish. We came here more than 10 times and he gotta eat bun dau mam tom, every time.
