Like Keanu Reeves, I'm going to take a moment and play Devil's Advocate (To clarify, I've never seen the movie and am unaware of who is in it, but feel like it's Keanu Reeves).
Anyway, this review is not for this building, but for Comcast's service in general. The process of trying to do anything at this actual building is awful--I won't deny that. But the thing is, I never have to go there.
So, why am I giving Comcast's service 4 stars?
First off, let's start with the plan that I have. I currently paying $39.99 for 30 meg internet+Basic Cable+HBO(Go)+Streampix.
I rarely use the Basic Cable or Streampix, but to have fast Internet AND HBO without having to have premium cable, it's what we've all been asking for---but no one seems to either A. know about it or B. give Comcast credit for having this plan. Not to mention a couple of weeks ago they had it on sale for $29.99 for 12 months. Yes, 12 months, which means after that you lose your promotional price---just like every other ISP. I haven't done a ton of research on this, but I believe AT&T might give you a lifetime price---but let's be honest, that's for terrible 3-10meg internet....which is borderline useless (at least for what I need the Internet for (transferring and uploading HD video (not porn)).
Second, customer service/reliability---
I don't understand what people are doing to make their Internet not work. Buy a good, reliable modem from Staples or Best Buy to avoid the fee from Comcast (it'll pay for itself in 6 months if you wait for a sale). In my experience, these have far fewer problems than any of Comcast's equipment, which may be what's causing service to be bad. If I call customer service sometimes I have to wait but, by the time I get ahold of someone, they do what they can to help. They're not trying to f with you. If they say they can't fix your problem over the phone, they aren't lying to you. And if they send a dude over and it's their fault---they won't charge you. Oh, and be nice to customer service people. They want to help you, but won't be as accommodating if you're impatient and inconsiderate towards them. Even if you're pissed, act gleeful and you can have fun playing a character and getting help at the same time.
Third, and the reason I'm writing this review---Free public wifi
Like most people reading this, I live in Chicago. I spend a lot of my time in coffee shops doing work and lots of the time the Wifi in the coffee shop (see: Starbucks) is over congested and slow with everyone working on their screenplay. Just moments ago I checked for other wifi networks nearby hoping to stumble upon an out-of-touch family business with unsecured wifi or something of the sort when I noticed this "Xfinity Wifi" that I've seen before, but never thought much about. I clicked it expecting it to bring me to some sort of splash page where I can pay $2.00 for an hour of internet or some such nonsense. Much to my surprise, a splash page did come up, but with a place for me to enter my Comcast credentials. Once I did, I was online with Internet that was exponentially faster than the Starbucks that I was connected to. Where is this Xfinity router? I don't know, it could be anywhere. At the dentist office across the street, in that woman's backpack, or in a mailbox. I don't know. But what I do know is that it's currently making it possible for me to write this positive review about them and also insult Starbucks at the same time. Which is great.
My point is, people love to complain---and while there are certainly merits to a lot of the complaints about Comcast, there are also people like me who have great experiences with them but never take the time to say so. So, yeah, Keanu Reeves.
Maybe I'll stream the Devil's Advocate later to see what the hype is all about! read more
