Overall I had a fair experience at Wrench Werks. My car took 6 days to complete (was told 2) and had a massive delay in acceleration after my work was completed. To cut a long story short, their work is awesome however they're just as expensive as dealer pricing even after a discount offered. I would recommend them for routine maintenance but would continue to take any VW to the dealership for big repairs. God bless. read more

I'm so glad we found Wrench Werks for my wife's VW cc, that I had to give them props. They are competent, trustworthy, reasonably priced, and NICE! Here's what I wrote in Google: It all started with a referral from my trusted mechanic who specializes on Japanese cars. My wife got a VW cc and after years of going to the dealership for routine maintenance, I started to notice we were taking her car in for "routine repairs"! The last straw was when I took a quote from the dealership to replace the headlamp and I went to Wrench Werks to get their quote...I chose Wrench Werks to replace it, nuff said. I also gave the green light to do a major repair to the engine (where I suspected the dealership may have "created" the problem) and my wife's VW cc has been running fine ever since. Now "routine maintenance" visits don't end up with, "sorry, but your engine needs to be taken out, turned upside down, and spanked a couple times because it was being bad...this will cost $$$$$$$$$$$$$". I love my car and Wrench Works takes care of my baby like she's their own. Barbara calls every so often to make sure she's running good and reminds me that it's time for an oil change. Everyone there is so helpful and so on it. The first time I brought her into Wrench Works it was an emergency... the control arm broke and I was barely able to make it out there, it was 15 minutes till closing on a Saturday but they took a quick look at her and found that she was unsafe to drive. I have used them since they opened for business. In fact even before they existed. Aaron and the gang are originally from Mike McKenna's Windward VW before they finally closed the VW dealership last year. They are former VW dealer employees who ventured out and opened their own shop. That is great. I have similar business experience. I support entrepreneurship fully. Started as Volksgerman, then the former bosses complained and VW said their name was infringing on Volkswagen. So next time you went, your license plate frame became Volx German. They have been doing the license frame swap from the beginning. It is bothersome, seeing your Tony VW or whatever plate frame change without your permission. Now its Wrench Werks. You gotta wonder why they keep changing the name? Trying to shake a bad reputation? Some of the filtered reviews at the bottom sound very similar to my experiences, so they are worth a read. I consistently took both my VWs to them and spent thousands, but had to stop going there after some really questionable repairs and recommendations. I switched to Tai VW in Wahiawa and never looked back. The biggest mistake is to own a VW in the first place, IMO, and getting rid of them was the best thing I ever did for my sanity and my credit card. My 2001 Beetle was leaking. I took her to Lex Brodies where they established that it was leaking diesel fuel and referred me to Wrench Werks. At first I was so excited to find a small shop that worked on VWs so I could avoid the damned dealership... the story continues... I took my car there at 10 am and had to walk around like an idiot before someone addressed me. I explained to the guy what was happening and I got nothing back. He was awkward and pretty quiet, poor traits for a customer service person, I'd say! He managed to tell me one thing - it would be $100 just to take a look at/diagnose the car. Whatever, it needed to be fixed. Shortly after 1 pm I called to check in - first I left a message on the answering machine and nobody ever called me back. I called again later and spoke with a woman who would make sure my call was returned. I sat around at home waiting for my car to be DONE... at 3:30 pm he finally called me back. THEY CLOSE AT 3 AND HE GAVE ME A GUILT TRIP ABOUT WAITING FOR ME TO COME GET THE CAR! Remember, I called you 2 times prior?!?! It was going to cost $3,900 to fix my 10-year-old car!!! Does that seem like a poor investment to anyone else? That car probably isn't worth that much. Now, I don't know anything about cars so we called my dear old Dad on 3-way. First, Dad called this guy out on a few things that were totally irrelevant to the fix and were being recommended anyways. Then, the guy couldn't explain to my Dad where the leak was coming from or what was causing it, just that we needed to replace the fuel pump entirely! I paid the $100 - which was actually $108 + tax (please just be honest and upfront!!!) and took the car to Kapahulu Auto for a second opinion. My good friend takes her SAAB there and they're always great to her. I got the problem fixed for $297. The guys there went out of their way to fix my car and had it finished in a day, provided great customer service and genuine concern for me and my issue. I wouldn't recommend Wrench Werks to anyone. The other reviews are very similar to mine and they're true! This place and their sketchy business practices made me furious and if they would have put a license plate frame on my car I would have told them where to put it! Don't go here, you're better off at the dealership or a reliable mechanic. read more

Starting this by saying the customer service here is EXCELLENT. Popped into Wrench Werks last week in hopes that they could fix my airbag sensor on my Mazda, so I could get a safety check, so I could renew my registration for November. Yep, always how it is for cars. They told me they didn't specialize in Mazda but I could bring my car in and they could see if their diagnostics would work on the airbag, to make sure it was just the sensor acting up and not something bigger. I agreed since they could take me in right away and time was of the essence. They are located near Fresh Cafe (the next street over actually) and it was pretty easy to find. Lots of tint and car repair places, so just keep an eye out for their sign and address. When I got there, I was greeted very warmly by two of their employees (whose names I can't remember, I do apologize!) and taken in. They got my information down and said they would be in contact. Unfortunately, when they called they said their diagnostics didn't work so I would have to take my car into a Mazda dealer, but they weren't going to charge me for my visit. When I picked up the car, they informed me that they did a complimentary walk around. They said my car should be fine for the safety check once I fixed my airbag, and to just make sure I changed out my windshield wipers because they were getting a little worn. Also told me to check my brakes in about six months to be safe. I was happily surprised at the extra service and expressed my gratitude, asking if they were sure I didn't need to pay anything, which they said I didn't. Upon leaving, they told me I could come back for my basic car repairs and tuneups and apologized that they couldn't do anything about the airbag. One last note! As I was writing this review, they just called to check up on me and make sure I was able to get my car into a dealership (my car was dropped off today) and take care of the airbag. With all the business WrenchWerks has been getting from me lately, I figure its about time to write up a review. At the time, I was recently fresh out of my factory warranty period for my 2009 GTI and was looking for a good auto shop to take care of a quick oil change. WrenchWerks came highly recommended by a couple fellow VW owners that I knew and I immediately made an appointment. First visit. The oil change went well. They took care of the job quick and for a good price. They even reminded me that I was due for a 40k mile maintenance in a couple months. Great. Go ahead and schedule me for that. However, a couple weeks after my oil change, I noticed a Check Engine Light on my dashboard and immediately made an appointment through WrenchWerks.com's painfully slow online appointment system. Second visit. When the appointment day came, I happily drop my car off and they give me an estimate for maintenance. But wait, wasn't that scheduled for another month? Might as well take care of it now, but please look into that Check Engine Light as I'd think that to be more of a priority. I drop the money to take care of the maintenance a bit earlier than planned but disappointed to learn that the Check Engine Light was being shot off due to an engine issue (surprise!) and it would have to be taken back for another diagnosis. Oh. You mean I have to bring in my car again for an issue that I wanted to get checked out for in the first place? *grumble* Sure. Third visit. Car gets dropped off. I get a call from the shop saying they need to look into the issue further. My car needs to be kept overnight. Minor inconvenience. Sure. I'll live with it. I'm just glad to know that my car's getting fixed up. Next day. The shop calls me saying they need to order a part, but assures me my car should be drivable until the part comes in. Great. Sure, let's get this baby fixed and that dreaded Check Engine Light off. A week passes. The part comes in. An appointment is made. Car is brought in. Part is installed. But they find that I need to bring in the car AGAIN as the intake manifold needs to be replaced and my engine flushed. Ok. Wait. How did they not see this prior? That part is going to be almost $500 plus labor? Ok ok, I want my car to last me a good while so let's get the issue taken care of and get that part ordered. Here's my credit card. At this point, I've been to their shop over 4 times in the past couple months. I find (rather lately to be honest) that the engine issues can still be covered under a separate warranty. I had read other reviews stating that service reps made inquiries to check if things can be covered under warranty. None of that. Let's cancel that unneeded part order, I'll get it done with my car's dealership and save me a chunk of money. 20% Restocking Fee? That's a shame. I guess about $80 is better off than paying the potential $800 you were going to charge me on a job that I could have gotten taken care of under warranty. I dealt with it because I'm not the type of customer to hassle a small businesses, but totally willing to share my experience to give others a heads up. UPDATE: Just to append to this novel: Gina, a customer service rep gave me a call several days later to sort out this whole ordeal. They ended up really taking care of me in the end by refunding the restocking fee AND going the extra mile of comping the initial Check Engine Light session. They even tossed in my safety check for free. A total 180° perception change, and I'm thankful. read more

Do not take your car here, unless you want to be rudely treated, over charged, and perhaps not have your car returned to you for almost a week due to incompetence. Go to the Honolulu Volkswagen on Nimitz instead: they are professional, they wash your car and inspect everything for free, and they have a shuttle which will take you where you're going and pick you up when your car is done. You see all those cars with WrenchWerks license plate frames, huh? That's because they sneakily install them on every car they touch whether you want it or not; it is on the mechanic's checklist. I started taking my 2004 Jetta to WrenchWerks because the girl I bought it from had all her service done there said they were good. I even (stupidly) had them check out the car when I bought it, and they gave it a clean bill of health. Within 3 months I had spent over $3500 in repairs: first the turbo needed to be replaced, then the auxiliary cooling pump, then the AC went out, then the whole headlight had to be replaced due to faulty wiring. When we got the turbo fixed first they told us it had to be replaced. They said there was a leak in some valves around the turbo and you couldn't replace just the valves so it had to be a whole new turbo. After we had already paid them $1500 for the turbo they said that they found out from the dealership that actually you could just replace the broken parts and not the turbo, so no need for a new turbo (red flag #1--why didn't they know this to begin with if they are VW "experts"?). The cool part is that then they refused to give us our $1500 back. They whined about how they had already paid for the part themselves and that they needed to wait to get their refund to give us our refund. What kind of business practice is that? Especially when it was their "error" which made us have to pay for this turbo in the first place. What kind of a business is this? Next they fix the valves and such and find out that, gee golly, we do need a new turbo after all. I drop the car off at 8am Thursday for them to install the turbo by 2:30 that day. It takes them 6 days to get the car back to us. Thursday and Friday they tell us that the technician is having trouble getting the new turbo back in. WTF? Isn't this your job? We are without the car for the whole Memorial Day Weekend. It isn't until the next Wednesday that we get it back. So here I am wondering if they broke other stuff trying to force the turbo in since they obviously don't know how to do their jobs. To top it all off, instead of giving us a discount or apologizing for the huge inconvenience they overcharged us by $650--charging us twice for the valves and such when it was already included in what we prepaid for parts & labor at the beginning (that $1500 for the turbo part was only a portion of like $2300 or so which I forked over). Now they want another $650? Once I explain to them that they are overcharging me they agree to remove $450 off the additional amount that I was being charged, like they are doing me a favor. If you do let them work on your car get everything in writing and very specific. As soon as we drove it off their lot and halfway to Waikiki the check engine lights up again. I never got a good explaintion for what was wrong, but they did fix that for me for no charge--again like they were doing me a favor. I suspect that this malfunction was related to their trying to manhandle the turbo back into place. This is just the tip of the iceberg of my bad experience with them, but I have written too much already. Beware of these people; they are not nice and not trustworthy. P.S. The day after I posted this review I was contacted by the owner who offered to (and did) refund the money which I was over-charged. He wrote to me "I was unaware of any concerns you had or I would have stepped in immediately. I can assure you that I do not rip people or treat people rudely." read more

First off, DO NO TAKE YOUR CAR TO THIS PLACE! These guys do not know what the hell they are doing! I seen wrench werks on many license plates so I thought id give it a try. (come to find out they just put it on them self without permission!) First got my diverter valve replaced, and went well.. second time i went because my turbo was NOT spooling. They had my car there for hours! They finally told me my turbo was blown and i needed a new turbo. gave me a quote on a new turbo + labor around $3000 dollars... LOL it was funny because I KNEW MY TURBO was not blown! i was sketched out and went there to pick up my car asap. They charged me for doing NOTHING to my car. I took it to Tai VW in wahiawa and told thomas what these clowns were telling me. He said he would take a look at it. He took it for a drive, and looked under the hood for about 5-10 minutes. He said oh i thought so, I WAS MISSING A DAMB NUT ON MY WASTEGATE! Thomas put on two NUTS just to secure it and told me try take it for a drive now. THOMAS IS A GENIUS! and for the best part, he didnt charge me a PENNY! SOOO much respect for this guy... he is the one and only mechanic that will work magic on your vw or audi in hawaii. In conclusion... Its either wrench werks does not know what they are doing at all or they like to RIP people off that dont know much about their cars! So tell me wrench werks... what is it? of course you will come up with some excuse... but know this... i would never EVER recommend this place to anyone! i would not even give this place a 1 star. This was by far the worst place I have ever been to. I was quoted one rate I get my car fixed then they try charging me another price. When I tried telling them that wasn't what they quoted me the manager started talking down to me like I was an idiot. I found out they tried adding in additional fees that were not in the quote. Then he asked me what I wanted him to do I said take off these charges I never agreed to. Then he says "show me where I made the mistake". Eventually he took off 40 of the 100 above the quote. Then tried to claim they were losing money on the deal. All in all it cost me 1000 to fix 5 lights and a broken air bag sensor. I would never go to this place. So since I posted this I was contacted by Ron and asked what happened. After I explained the situation he told me this is not the way wrench works does business and apologized for the incident then refunded my money so that I was charged what I was quoted. Ron treated me with aloha and I really appreciated it. I still wish this initial disagreement never happened but they did a great job handling it afterwards. read more

I realized that they put a Wrench Werks license plate holder on my car a few weeks after I had my car in... a little bothered by this (although I had absolutely no attachment to my Audi Hawaii license plate holder). I was really tempted to take it off, but alas, that sounded like more of a pain than just keeping it there. And, I do think they are a great alternative to the dealer. But I thought I should warn everyone, that you may get a new license plate holder if you're not careful... Wrench Werks - please review this policy... it just feels a little pushy. Review Statement: I drove away ENCHANTED. Ive had two interactions with Wrench Werks now. The first time, I was escorting a friend to pick up her car after repair. I remarked on the friendly service, the clear explanations, and the very clean establishment. Other clients were coming to pick up their vehicles at the end of the day, and each remarked on the fact that not only were their vehicles serviced, but also that they were CLEAN inside and out! The manager, Rod, introduced himself, answered questions I had regarding servicing cars from as far out as the North Shore (Oahu), and mentioned that Wrench Werks had an IG account. My friend was happy with the service she had with Wrench Werks, and I was happy to have made a new friend there at the establishment. A few months later, after a dinner in the Kapahulu area, the shifter cable on my car became disconnected, and I was stranded. I called to have AAA assist, and soon became aware that I might have to have my car towed. Even though way past normal business hours, I thought to call Wrench Werks to see if anyone happened to be in the office. Miraculously, the manager was in. Rod walked me through the procedures for having my car towed to the establishment after hours, took note of my concern, and even made sure that I had arrangements made to get a ride back to Laie. The VERY NEXT DAY, my car was looked at, repaired, and made ready for me to pick up the following day.... even with all the other repairs that needed to be done. People were friendly all the way through, and I was called and kept aware of updates throughout the experience. I really want to commend Rod and the staff there at Wrench Werks on very personable service. I have never had my car break down, and the service and treatment I received at Wrench Werks went far beyond just car repair, even to lowering the angst of a very stressful situation. With a lack of VW repair shops on the island, we were forced to either try this place or go to the stealership. Should have gone to the stealership. After getting some (expensive) work done on my girlfriend's 2001 Jetta, the car came back with some glaring, sketchy issues. The car had passed its safety inspection days before, yet after driving back from Wrench Werks, the tail light was suddenly out. Went out to buy a new bulb, and opened the cover to find that where there should have been a burnt out bulb, there was nothing. There are two slots for bulbs in this model of Jetta, and both were completely empty. Given that the car was taken in by 20 year old girl, I'm sure they were hoping she'd take it back into them, and pay to get that fixed as well. Car also came back with multiple cigarette butts on the driver side floor, and service was well over $100 above quote. Crooks. read more

The stubborn 'check engine light of doom' reared its ugly head once again, but service was postponed because it was directly related to Audi's horrible B7 platform Turbo design. However, the 'EPC light of oh ****!' burst out of the dash like a supernova. A turtle could have traveled down Ala Moana Blvd. faster than my car. Generally, the EPC light turns off after a restart, but it didn't this time. Panicked, I immediately called Barbara hoping Honolulu's "finest" wouldn't cite me for using my cell phone with the key still in the ignition. Barbara scheduled an appointment for me to take the car into WW the next morning. Thankfully, the hellacious EPC light turned off after waiting 15 minutes and I was able to park Ms. A4 in a safe place. The Next Two Days: WW immediately identified issues by checking Ms. A4's Deutschetechniksupercomputer, recommended appropriate service, and performed a requested routine oil change. Unfortunately, WW had to babysit Ms. A4 overnight because I was no longer in Honolulu. I picked up Ms. A4 the next morning and WW helped me prioritize future service visits, ordered parts, and scheduled a future appointment to address priority No. 1. It was your typical mid-day in paradise where AC was definitely needed, but it was kaputt. Ironic because Ms. A4 was blowing air almost as cold as the summit of Mauna Kea on a summer's day on the morning I dropped it off. I called WW, left a message, and took Ms. A4 back to the shop without an appointment later that afternoon. The technician checked der Deutschetechniksupercomputer once again, but the solution was much more simple than that. WW fixed the problem, on the spot, no questions asked, kostenlos. I wrote about a week back, a rather not very nice letter, to describe the experience I had in receiving parts that were ordered. Rod had suggested I talk to him, of which I promptly did. Today I am writing to amend that scornful review, and gratefully so! I had waited over a year and a half for a part, and recently for part numbers so I can be reimbursed from VW. The person to talk too in these issues is Rod. Rod is the person that can make things right, has been in the business for a very long time and knows how to put it all together, as a skillful coordinator talked to all the parties involved. It took a couple of days of back and forth emails, and voila! I was reimbursed for a part, and had the part numbers so I can be reimbursed from VW. We finally figured out what was going on. Pros: Wrench works has a competent staff and provides fair estimates. Friendly, courteous customer service. I first took my VW to B&Bs, but on one trip they couldn't figure out which key turned the car on, mistakenly thought there was an issue with the car because of that, and after four trips, I still had lights on the dashboard, and my problems were not resolved. I called Wrench Works and explained the problem; they had me drop off the car the next day, and the problem was fixed within the week. That has been several months now and I've had no issues since. Con: sometimes they are so booked up that you have to wait weeks for an appointment. It's probably because they are good at what they do. read more

Brought my Jetta here because my car was misfiring and leaking oil. From the first phone call to the shop to picking up my car today, my total experience was AWESOME. Barbara is friendly, personable and makes you feel welcomed and at ease. She told me they would diagnose my car and let me know exactly what was wrong. She called me a couple hours later to let me know what the problems were and what was needed and what was recommended. There was ZERO pressure and she let me know exactly what to expect as far as costs went. They took care of the misfiring issue in one day (so I could drive my car home) and ordered the parts for the other repairs and completed them a week later, just as Barbara promised. Incredible mechanics. They really know what their doing. If you need to get anything done to your VW or Audi, you have to get with these guys. Don't go to the dealership and get ripped off! I should know, I should've sued one of them had I known what they'd done early enough. read more

These guys are scumbuckets. First they are commission based, you bring them one problem they'll tell you 4 more things you "should" do to vechicle that aren't necessary. They use fuzzy math, they hand write you a quote and explain it in a vague way with numbers all over the place like a dirty car salesmen. They also use cheap parts, I've gone through 3 water pumps in 5 years each job cost around $600. After the third pump I was done dealing with them I talked to many other mechanics and they all agreed that was way above normal failure and suspected cheap parts were the issue. They aren't friendly, and are actually kind of pushy. I wouldn't recommend. read more

Aaron and his team at Wrench Werks have always given us honest estimates and advice when we inquire about "what we should do." They do good and fast work and have never told us to get "unnecessary repairs" done. There have been times where I call to inquire, tell Aaron what I've been quoted from other automotive companies and he'll honestly say, "That's a good price, you should go with it." He's even asked additional questions to make sure my issue is not covered under the warranty before pursueing the possible sale. I highly recommend Aaron and his team for your automotive repair needs (even if they do specialize in German Engineering, they do just as good a job on other makes and models). read more

These guys are super awesome, we came in for an simple oil change. Gave us estimate of time and when I came back to pick up my car it was looking cleaned and fresh! They even took care of my expired safety check without asking! How wonderful is this service!! I would totally recommend them to anyone who needs a full service with awesome customer service! I read all the negative reviews and I wanted to take my car to Tai VW in Wahiawa at first but it would have been a 30 mile tow so I chanced it with Wrench Werks. They fixed my car in about 3 hours and for less than Tai estimated. Noted a few other issues that should eventually be fixed but didn't try to do extra work and charge me for it.They also referred me to a tow company that charged me $5 less than the guy I called quoted. I think a lot of people are are pissy after having to shell out a bunch of money for a repair, especially hobby mechanics who second guess the pros and think they could have done the job themselves, or maybe I just got lucky but I thought Wrench Werks did a great job. read more

We highly recommend Wrench Werks. They have great service, honest and friendly. We are new to the Island and our car broke down the day we picked it up from Matson. Another shop/mechanic told us all the things wrong with our VW Beetle. Brian took care of us and he said all we need is a new battery. He was right. The car is running now perfectly.
