My break and check engine lights both needed to be diagnosed. I originally went to another reputable auto repair shop, but the part i needed was on back order for over a year. So I was referred to Starkey's Auto Repair. Starkey's was able to find me a refurbished part and resolved my break light being on. It was an expensive repair ($4k), but the price was comparable to what I would've paid at the original shop. Next issue was my check engine light. They diagnosed it as electrical and were able to fix it fairly quickly. It costed about 1k. But then a few days later, my check engine light turned on again. I took it back and was not charged a 2nd diagnostic fee, but unfortunately, it was unrelated to the electrical issue. This time, it was my catalytic converter x2 and O2 sensors ($3k estimate). Mind you, my car is old. And my only goal for the repairs was to prepare my car to be shipped, but the cost of my repairs had already surpassed the value of my vehicle. So I kindly declined any further repairs. At this point, I already spent about $6k in repairs including diagnostic fees, but my check engine light was still not resolved. Then why am I giving a 4 star review? 1. Starkey's did fix whatever parts were quoted on my estimates. From what they told me, sometimes not every issue will show up at once when the diagnostic is completed. Sometimes after fixing one problem, it's possible another issue will surface right after. Which is what happened in my case. 2. Excellent customer service! From the beginning to the end, every person who I interacted with, Jayden, Sheree, Reese was kind, friendly, and professional. I appreciated the ease of communication via text/phone and the promptness of their responses. 3. I needed a rental car while my car was being repaired. They were able to provide me with a rental car from Hertz at a discounted rate. Hertz provided me transportation to and from Starkey's to the their location. 4. Their wait area is very inviting, open, clean, and spacious. There are snacks, drinks, and coffee available for the their customers. It's also nice to see there is a large screen TV with the full camera system that shows the vehicles that are being worked on. 5. They provide a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty that covers parts and labor for all repairs they provide. So why the minus 1 star? I had originally asked if it was possible to diagnosis my car before my breaks were being worked on. Knowing it was already going to cost me $4k for my break repair, I wanted to make sure the total cost of repairs wouldn't exceed my budget I was willing to put into an old car. But I was told my break repairs would be completed 1st before the check engine light would be addressed. In hindsight, if I had known it would cost $9k, and had known it wouldn't resolve the issue of my engine light being on even after spending $6k, I wouldn't have committed to these repairs. Although I know Starkey's is not at fault for my engine light issue not being resolved since the new issue was not part of the original diagnostic test, this experience left me very disheartened. I am grateful for all the services they provided, and i know it was my decision to approve the repairs, but I wish they would've advised me instead to sell/trade/donate my car since the repairs I had to do were already more than double the cost of the value of my car. So would I recommend this business to anyone? Yes, I still would! They provided excellent customer service, very professional, friendly, with fantastic communication. They guarantee their parts, labor, and repairs. Plus, it was so convenient to have Hertz provide me with transportation from Starkey's to their location and offer a discounted rental rate for Starkey's customers. My only strong caveat is if you have an older car like I do. Think twice or thrice if the repairs cost more than the value of your car, especially if it's a check engine light. You might end up going down a rabbit hole of repairs like I did since engine issues do not always show within the 1st diagnostic test until the immediate issue is resolved. read more

I'm not sure about their actual repairs, but everything leading up to it was not great. I'll start with the good. The people who work there are professional and always answer the phone. However, the initial communication to diagnose my car had to come from me. There diagnosis fee is exorbitant -at the time of this review I believe it's over $230. I understand that when you take your car anywhere they are going to say, you may need this and that. However, before my car was diagnosed (it had stalled) I got an estimate for 8 other repairs that were unrelated to the reason I took it in. After 4 or 5 days, they wanted to finally diagnose my car for the initial problem but charge me another diagnosis fee. So before my car would even get touched I already had a $500 bill. I denied the second diagnosis and paid a tow truck to tow it elsewhere. Only come here if your car is under warranty and they are the one who are contracted to fix it. I come here for the Safety Checks because you check-in at the office, supply your insurance & registration, then pay and get out of there. They have a big parking lot to get in and out. It usually takes about 20-45 minutes depending on the demand. There is a BBQ place, Zippy's, sushi place and a mall right next to them so one can get lunch or shopping done while waiting. Of course, make sure your insurance and registration are up to date. I overheard a couple of people needing that. DO NOT GO HERE Starkey's Auto Repair I brought my car in to have a brake light switch replaced, and windshield wiper motors fixed. After a "spontaneous"(their words) fire started in the engine compartment of my car while in Starkey's garage, I ended up having to sell my car for scrap. First, they charge $250 per issue diagnosis, which is not deducted from repair cost, which should have been my first clue this place is shady. I agreed to the charges, and asked them to please disconnect the battery, since the brake light problem would drain the battery, and it would be dead by the next day. After two days, they called me saying they had diagnosed the brake lights and wipers, but had also found "other issues". The receptionist on the phone was incredibly rude, often talking down to me, and talking over me as I spoke. She told me the brake lights could be fixed for an additional $250, plus cost of parts, and the wipers would cost an additional $250 an hour, for an unknown number of hours...no estimate on how many hours...when I jokingly asked, "so it could be 100 hours at $250?" She simply responded, "yes". When I tried to tell her I only wanted the brake light switch replaced, she started talking over me, telling me the driver seat was also stuck (probably because they didn't disconnect the battery), the battery needed replacing (didn't say it was dead), and the car had oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid leaks. Now I knew I was being scammed. A dishonest repair shop will tell customers there are "fluid leaks" when there are none...costs the shop nothing, the customer is charged for patching and fluid replacement, and is none the wiser. Before bringing the car in, I had it parked in my garage for three weeks, and checked for fluid leaks on the garage floor before taking it to Starkey's (there wasn't a drop on the garage floor). Also, I had already replaced the battery three months ago, because the brake lights wouldn't shut off, and drained the battery, so I knew I didn't need to buy a new battery. The next day, the same receptionist called me back, telling me they hadn't fixed the brake lights yet, but there had been a fire in the engine compartment of my car, caused by "spontaneous combustion". The receptionist said not to worry, she's seen this plenty of times...and said my insurance would probably cover everything. I immediately got on the phone and called my insurance company. Later, the receptionist sent me video from the security camera of the fire starting...sadly, the video only started about 2 seconds before the fire started, so couldn't see who was around the car minutes before. Before the insurance company was able to send out an inspector, the same receptionist called me back, saying the inspector came, and now Starkey's would like to give an estimate for damage, but I'd need to pay $1,300 to have the manifold cover of my engine removed for Starkey's to do the inspection. I told her not to touch anything, and called the insurance company back. Sure enough, the insurance company said the inspector hadn't been to Starkey's yet, so they called Starkey's and told them not to touch anything. After a day or two, the inspector was able to go check the car, and said the cause of the fire was "mechanical", so not covered by my insurance...any repair costs would be out of pocket. It's an old car, with only about a $2,500 Blue Book value, so with unknown damage from the fire, and the brake lights and windshield wipers still not being fixed, I decided to sell it for scrap to a salvage yard. When I came back to Starkey's Auto "Repair" to pay my bill and sign the title over to the salvage company, I found the battery was dead (they didn't disconnect it as instructed) and there were empty soda cans in the front seat. $200 for diagnosis on any issue. My certified Mercedes mechanic (Sumida's) only charge $145. Sumida's was booked solid for a week so I had to find an alternative. It was an emergency and I wanted repairs done ASAP. Google reviews were pretty good so I went for it. Never again. I am out over $1200. I feel ripped off. Had to pay $300 deposit on the repair as well (WTH!) I am this close to investing $145 at Sumida's just to see how much it would have cost. The website allows you to have up-to-date documentation on the estimate while they acquire the parts needed. That's pretty cool. The staff communicates very regularly which I appreciate. This shop charged a diagnostic fee of almost $190 with taxes for each problem reported, to include mechanical problems such as brakes and suspension. When asked why there was a diagnostic fee for EACH item, the technician replied, "Well, we have to get paid." Spent nearly $400 just for diagnostics of two issues. The estimates received seemed geared toward dealership clients who also use this shop, rather than typical walk-in customers. STARKEY'S LOST MY FUTURE BUSINESS. I brought my Audi in on March 6, 2026 so they can drain/fill my front and rear differential fluids per the recommended maintenance interval. After I dropped the car off, the service adviser sent me a text of the estimate. It included draining/filling the transmission fluid-a job I did not request. I called him and said that the Audi dealer changed my transmission fluid in August 2025. He said that the trans. fluid needed to be changed to get to the front differential drain plug. Not knowing if this was true, I consented to the work. After the work was completed, the service adviser explained that the tech. who did the work said the transmission fluid had to be changed because the transmission and front differential were mated together and use the same fluid (not true). The total job cost me over $900 dollars. Over the weekend, I still didn't feel they were honest. The following Monday, March 9th, I called Starkey's and asked to speak to the service manager hoping to get a refund for the transmission fluid work. I was told she was in a meeting. The service adviser then texted me to see if he could help. I thanked him and asked to speak with the service manager. This tells me that they knew they overcharged me. About a half hour later the office manager called me and said there would be no refund. The service adviser then talked to me with a made up story why they would not refund me what was approximately $500.00 of unnecessary work. That evening I consulted fellow members of an Audi Facebook group I belong to that shares the same B9 engine. Those that responded to my post said the transmission work was not necessary. A FB member said that each job is separate and that the transmission and differential use different oils. I also watched a YouTube video on changing the front differential fluid on the same year/model Audi I have. The video did not mention anything about draining the transmission fluid. I am not upset with my mechanic who referred me to Starkey's but at the Starkey's staff whom I have never worked with before. Instead of working to earn my business, they chose to overcharge me. If they ripped me off they do it to others based on the abundance of negative reviews. I searched for their company on the State of Hawaii Regulated Industries and Complaint Office (RICO). There was a $1,500.00 judgement filed against them last year. Those who read this review would be very wise to go elsewhere. After already spending over $1,000, I'm now forced to spend even more money, time, and energy fixing an issue that should have been handled correctly the first time. Starkey said they would pay me a refund as long as didn't leave a bad review and accepted that the next time I used them they were not liable for damages. On 12/15/25 I picked up my vehicle and the drivers chair and armrest was broken. I gave them one week to find a replacement armrest (I didn't complain about the chair) and on 12/19/25 I was told they couldn't do anything. I pushed back and was told on 12/19 they would proceed with a refund for the most recent repair under the conditions stated above. It is now 1/22/26 and they have not processed a refund. I followed up on 12/30/25 in writing and was told verbally that I would get it and that it was being processed. It is now 1/22/26 and I have nothing back after they damaged my driver's chair and broke my arm rest. I reported them to my bank for the refund. Issue with the vehicle: I took my vehicle to Starkey for a total of 3 times my for the same reoccurring issue that they claimed they fixed each time. The first time I explained what I thought the issue was with the electrical and believed it was the wiring harness and I wanted an electronic diagnostic. I explain that I had replaced the brake pedal switch, checked the battery etc. for $700 they told me that it was because I didn't install the brake pedal switch correctly and that was causing the problem. They competed the repair and days letter the vehicle did the same thing. I took the car back and was patient as I was told by Starkey that m they couldn't get to my vehicle because the mechanic that specializes on my vehicle got sick and then got hurt. When the mechanic returned I was told it was my fault that I stalled an after market brake pedal switch and should of used the vehicle brand. So Starkey charged me again and replaced the brake pedal switch. I was driving the vehicle again and then it did the same thing. This time Starkey told me that it was the wiring harness and that the repair is patchwork essentially because they could not get a replacement harness because they obsolete. So I paid $400 and was told basically I need to agree that Starkey has no additional liability regarding this repair. DO NOT GO HERE I rarely write reviews and I almost never write negative ones but I feel like its necessary in this case. Twice I've taken my car to Starkey's and been overcharged and lied to about the cost of repairs. The first time I needed two coolant hose t-connectors (small plastic parts that cost just a few dollars) replaced and was told with parts and labor it would cost about $800 plus the $200 diagnostic fee. On the bill the parts were itemized as costing over $100. When I looked up the parts myself they cost $12 at Autozone. I was also told the job was labor intensive and hence would cost me over $500 in labor fees. I did the job myself with no specialized tools (or experience) in less than two hours. In total I spent $25. If I had gone with Starkey's it would have cost me almost $1,000. That's just absurd and dishonest. Then recently, my car was having issues accelerating at low speeds. I wanted to take it to the dealership but they couldn't see it for a week. Starkey's was the only shop that could see it and I really wanted to get a diagnosis. Took it in and paid their absurd $200 diagnostic fee. They told me they thought the issue was my gas pedal. They recommended replacing it and also doing a full throttle body cleaning. In total they quoted me $1,200. I told them I would pass on the throttle body cleaning (because when I pressed them they admitted it wasn't really necessary). I asked how much parts would be to replace the gas pedal and they said around $500. I called the dealership myself to ask for the price of the part and it was less than $300. I ended up passing on the repair figuring I could just do it myself. The part cost $260 and the repair itself can be done in less than 30 minutes (its just a few bolts and a wire harness). However, later that day I noticed that my brake lights were staying on even after I shut the car off, even with the plastic break stopper intact, which was strange. Long story short I decided to replace the brake switch myself and see if that fixed my acceleration issues figuring that if the computer was getting signals that by brake was on it might be cutting power to the engine while I was driving. The new brake switch cost me $18.99 at NAPA and it took me less than 15 minutes to install. Problem solved. No more acceleration issues. If I had listened to Starkey's I would be out over $1,000 AND still not have my problem fixed. TL;DR - They charge a ridiculous diagnostic fee, upsell their parts by hundreds of dollars, and overcharge significantly for labor relative to how much time the job is actually going to take. Do NOT go here. For the price, just go the dealership. read more

I'm not one to write reviews but this cannot go unnoticed. I took my wife's vehicle in for a repair because I read reviews it was a good shop. There was clicking/thumping while moving and a shaky steering wheel, and it felt unsafe to drive. They did a diagnostics which I had to pay for. They quoted me $2000+ for the repair, called me later saying the rear tires had camber slash. I didn't have time to jack up the vehicle to check but I highly doubt it because I did a tire rotation and maintenance a few weeks before. I left the shop with 4 brand new tires and nothing was fixed. Still shaky unsafe to drive clicking and thumping when rolling. What a waste of time and money. I do not recommend this dishonest repair shop. Take your money and business elsewhere. We ending up buying a new vehicle and shipped to her dad in Hilo. He mentioned an easy fix with less than $200 repair parts. He mentioned we got scammed and lied to. He's not a mechanic but that car drives good as new. read more

Experience was garbage with this place.. Communication sucks, they call far and in between with progress, when servicing your car. But the service advisors are nice. Brought my car in back in October to fix an issue, the communication and progress was little. They did fixed the issue. Brought my car back in for the issue I brought it in for the first time and an oil change.. they charged me a service fee to pretty much look at the issue that they supposedly fixed and got back to me saying it was a different issue triggering the lights.. what irritated me though was I dropped it off on a Wednesday night didn't hear anything from them on Thursday. Called them on Friday and they acknowledged the work, gave me a quote on Monday and didn't get it back till Tuesday.. granted they are closed on the weekends. When I got my car back. My speedometer wasn't working.. so I brought it back and dropped it off on Wednesday night. And I didn't get it back till Tuesday, the following week.And the only reason why I got it back because I called them and ask for a progress.. other than that, it was crickets on Thursday and Friday.. and to finish it off, they said the speedometer not working wasn't related to the diagnoses they did and would have to charge me another diagnosis fee to see why it's not working.. I was getting my old car ready for my daughter who will be getting her drivers license soon. The car is in relatively good shape, but one of the passenger windows would not go down and the car door handle had broken off. My mom heard about this place so I gave them a call. I took the car down for them to take a look at what needed to be fixed. The person that I met with was named Bill. Later that day he called me with the estimate and ordered the parts. The parts came in a few days I took the car down to get it fixed and it was quickly completed the same day. He did try and sell me a overall maintenance for the car which I declined. Apparently the window needed a new motor, and the car door handle wasn't 100% match of the black of my Toyota, but apparently it would cost a lot more to have an exact match. So, I'm not saying this place is a scam, that's up to the reader to decide. I took my car into Starkey's Auto Repair yesterday, 16 Feb 2026, because the steering wheel and front end was shaking. After a $150 diagnostics fee (and 2 hours in the waiting room), I was presented with $3400 worth of recommended repairs to fix the issue. The list included front struts ($1800), CV joints ($600), 2 new tires, mount and balance ($500) and an alignment ($500). I asked, of the list, what is the main culprit of the shaking, and they said the tires were bad. I said OK, thank you, paid the diagnostics fee and left. The next day I took my car to a Tire Center in Waialua. They did not charge me a diagnostics fee, and for a grand total of $350, they replaced both front tires, mounted, balanced and aligned. So, where Starkey's was ready to charge me over $900+ (not including the $150 diagnostics fee), I got it all done for $350 (plus no diagnostics fee) at a different repair shop. After the work was finished my car drives great. Smooth as ice. From my point of view, this not only calls into question the amount Starkey's wanted to charge me, but the other repairs they said my car needed. I probably won't go there again. read more

Zach and his team were so incredibly wonderful to work with. I called to get estimates for my dads car, estimates were super quick and approvals were done after getting the car in shop and they were very honest the entire process. This is an issue I've had with other car shops is that the estimate wouldn't match even the initial approval by sometimes thousands. But with Zach's team they are versed enough to be able to determine what needs the car to be brought in first before an initial estimate and what can be generally estimated with photos and videos with a high level of confidence. My dads car was spot on. It was uncomplicated in general but I got quoted triple the price from the other 5 places I called. Keep in mind my dads car isn't a spring chicken it's an old car. The person who helped me over the phone was super friendly and responsive. I don't know anything about cars and she was super patient with me describing car parts as "that dome thing that looks like a sideways bowl" and helped me figure out initially what part of the car I was talking about in a very empathetic manner. I hope I learn more about cars but I probably won't lol. I think this is an amazing place to bring your car for repairs and their parking lot is huge and super easy to navigate. Thank you so much!!!! I don't normally write reviews, but I felt obligated today. I have been bringing my vehicles to Starkeys for the past few years to get them inspected. Primarily because Starkeys does not require an appointment. Today I arrived at 8:15 am on a Monday with a week left in the month. After completing the required paperwork and turning in my keys, the receptionist stated that it would take about an hour. It is now 10:15 am and I am still waiting. No room in the waiting room as every seat is taken. I'm standing outside and can't start my car to sit in the air conditioning as the receptionist has my keys. My advice: don't come here unless you have half of a work day to burn. How to fix the problem: workers shouldn't vape in the office. Unprofessional. Create an online appointment system. Hire more workers to surge and do inspections. Accomplish all inspections in the parking lot in the quickest manner possible. Advertise a 30 minute process- or it's free. I don't think I'll be back. Update: after waiting 2.5 hours. They failed my 07 jeep wrangler for a "stuck secondary hood latch". Mind you , it's a jeep with external hood latches. And why they were opening the hood to do a vehicle inspection?? I reviewed the state of Hawaii vehicle inspection checklist. Could not find this item???? DO NOT GO HERE. Receptionist was rude when I told her I would not be back. However, I will be filing a complaint with the better business bureau and the Hawaii Department of Commerce and business affairs. Ultimately, I returned home and checked the item highlighted as the reason for failure. Secondary hood latch worked fine. Agreed he heard it. Stated maybe the turbo. Which they had worked around and with to do the other repair. He was supposed to to call me the next day with what they were going to do. Never called. Now 5 month later van stumped all the oil out. Had it repaired and mechanic told me there were two bolts missing from the turbo and the a hose to it was kinked and shoved in a way that stopped the flow It dumped all the oil a second time and they discovered the oil was come out of that kinked line. The turbo is now damaged and needs major repair. Called starkeys and was told it was a mess under there before and had broken bolts etc. they will not stand behind their work. No one else had worked on the van engine since it was new has 68,000 miles. If there were bolts broken missing etc they should have told me and fixed it. I do know they broke 4 bolts in the exhaust manifold when they worked on it. But they did warn me that could happen so that's ok. But to not be willing to even look at it to stand behind there work is unacceptable. Only one that has talked to me is a service coordinator. Not cool Mr starkey. Not cool read more

John and his mechanics are experts with air-conditioning and heating/cooling units and when I came in to pickup my vehicle, he explained everything in easy-to-understand English. I even got a brief lesson in vehicle Maintenance and didn't need to show proof of insurance or any of that unnecessary paperwork that dealerships require. I'm so grateful to say that my regular mechanic was able to squeeze me in and they charged me $390. I came here for a safety check a few weeks prior to expiring and their rates for this was comparable to other places and I didn't need a appointment or waited around to even get one. I only found this place because I drive by often on my way to Costco, Hana tea, or Kalihi pet store and I always see the giant sign saying safety checks done in that complex. Anyway. It's in a pretty weird area and I drove in and looked around first before getting out. There's a small shop and you first walk in and you'll see a office with a glass window where you can check in and fill out your paperwork there. It was a nice air conditioned room and it didn't take long really. I was in and out within half an hour or even less. They gave me a few coupons before for other things but I don't know where I put them. Service was really friendly too. I may start coming here for safety checks only cause it was less of a hassle to get one here and I'm usually around in the area anyway. I usually go to this place in kaimuki but the wait is really long! read more
