I'm not a car person so when it comes to car kine tingz, I'm not sure of where to start. There was a delay when I switched gears, google mentioned transmissions, and so I started with a phone call to Ray's. Service: Professionalism on the phone! They asked me all the questions to get an idea of what was happening. Scheduled me in to drop the car off overnight so they can be test it. Next day I received the diagnosis and a quote to fix. I appreciated their honesty and liked that they didn't pressure me to fix it with them. Overall: I'd recommend to family and friends and definitely return if needed. What they predicted came to pass so yeah... they know their stuff. read more

I've been going to Ray's Transmission Service for years, and Neal has consistently taken great care of me. Despite the name, he handles much more than just transmission work -- I've brought in my vehicle for all types of repairs, and every time the service has been top-notch. Neal is professional, knowledgeable, and most importantly, honest. He takes the time to explain what's going on, what actually needs to be done, and what can wait. I've never felt upsold or pressured -- just straightforward advice and quality work. It's hard to find a mechanic you can truly trust, and Neal is that guy. Highly recommend. read more

Tried to tell me I need a new transmission, offered to put in a rebuilt for $8000. I took it to the dealership for a second opinion. The dealership said it was just a seal around the transmission shaft, the dealership repaired it for just $1700. read more

Theft of my phone while at Ray's Transmission Service Center. On 9/25/23 at about 7:30 am I dropped off my car at Ray's Transmission shop on 959 Queen's St, Honolulu for a transmission oil change. I came back at about 8:30 am & it was not done so I came back again at about 9:15 am & they were finished. Hence, I have paid & drove off. While stopped at a traffic light I had opened & checked my middle compartment & found my portable flashlight & extra phone, Samsung Galaxy A71 5G missing. So I went back to Ray's Transmission & advised the owner, which he refused to listen & advised for me to go home & check. I drove home as I needed to check my dash cam camera facing inside the car with my computer. I got home & checked with my computer & saw that the worker leaned over to his right after test driving the car after finishing with the transmission oil change. I made a short copy of the video with my phone camera & went back to Ray's Transmission shop. The dash cam facing inside the car is showing as inverse so the workers left is actually the work's right. Once arriving at Ray's Transmission shop I went over to their small office & asked for my credit card that I had left after paying, which the lady gave it back. I then asked for the owner & once he came I had tried to explain that I have a video showing the worker leaning over to his right side where the middle compartment is at, but the owner refused to see the video nor listen & just kept on cutting me off by telling me that "No one here took anything from your car, go home." I was at least hoping to see their video camera or try & talk to the worker as I was keep trying to explain that my personal information was in that phone & that I am not concerned with the cost. But the owner kept refusing to listen & kept cutting me off. Hence, I got in my car & called for police so that I could make a police report for my documentation in case of a possible identity theft situation in the future. As the owner was passing by my car I again tried to explain to him that I have called police to file a police report to document this incident just in case of an identity theft, which he refused to listen & all of a sudden he started yelling out foul languages with foul words & threatening body languages as you can see in the still shots. The whole video is of the owner yelling out foul words & threatening languages with foul body simulations & threatening body languages. The following is just some that I could make out from my dash cam video: Me: All I wanted was to get the phone. Ray's Transmission owner: Beat it! Me: Don't be rude, come on. Ray's Transmission owner: Fuck you! Me: You are on camera. Ray's Transmission owner: You better get the fuck out of here, fuck you! (while motioning very threateningly) Me: Police have been called. (He then starts walking away) Ray's Transmission owner: Yells lots of foul words & threatening languages with body motions while walking back to me. As I am trying to back up my car to get out of the shop the owner of Ray's Transmission keeps yelling out foul languages & threats with body motions while coming towards me, which is when the police officers arrived & told him to move away & walked him away from me. The owner of Ray's Transmission have threatened me with foul languages & body motions, which the police officers have also noted on their report. Yet, the owner of Ray's Transmission have stated that he had simply asked me to leave on the police report, which is totally not true. The police have written otherwise on their report so it clearly shows that the owner of Ray's Transmission have made a false statement to the police officers. I am very disappointed with Ray's Transmission at 959 Queen's Street in Honolulu. The owner could have at least offered to show their video & also try & talk to the employee that was in my car, which he didn't. I was just asking for some support, but instead I received a bunch of foul language yelling & threats & also with body motions as shown on the video, which I am still not able to understand why the owner of Ray's Transmission behaved as such, so hysterically mad. I have already called in the IMEI #355181111159447 as stolen so the phone is worthless to anyone else. I was using it as a speedometer while driving & taking photos of my receipts for tax purpose instead of holding onto the hard copies, which I did not get to transfer it to my computer. I also had some other personal information in the phone, which I should have erased when I had upgraded. Photos are as follows: Worker stopping at 9:18 am while inside my car Worker leaning to his right at 9:18 am while inside my car Owner yelling with foul words & threats with indecent body motions at 10:49 am Owner yelling with foul words & threats with indecent body motions at 10:59 am Police officer telling & escorting the owner to move away from me at 11:00 am Police Report page 1 - 6 Receipt for the Transmission oil change read more

They were very flexible on drop off and pickup. Friendly and upfront about what they do.

Came here to get a diagnosis on my car due to transmission issues. As my car was kicking from time to time when it shifts gears. The work only took them about less than one hour to diagnose, explained to them I was at work so I'll come by and pick the car up later. Upon arriving I received the bill, only to find out the total cost of the so called labor came out to be 260+tax. Who charges 260 dollars to diagnose a car that took less than an hour, I dropped my car off at around 11:05 during my lunch and received a call at 11:55 explaining the resolution. If you're going to charge someone 260 at least disclose to them first that it will be approx 260, and ask them are you sure you want to do it. Not have them find out the cost at the time paying. And the front desk lady explain to me, we charge this high because people would go to their friends to do the work. Update: owner called in regards to this review, I am giving two stars more because of the honesty and the caring they have for their customers. read more

Ray's Transmission Service Center - Bill - Auto Repair Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

People here are so nice. Making appointment was easy because the lady was so nice. I dropped my car to have them check, so I needed to ride a bus to work (bus stop is close to the shop by the way), needed ones for bus fee. The lady changed my $5 bill to ones without any problem. Then soon, I got a phone call from Neil, whose diagnosis was pinpointed, and he gave me some options and time to think about. When I returned to picked up my car, he didn't take a penny for his time and knowledge. Also, the lady gave me another option what I can do. I was very happy to know that we still have a car repair shop like Ray's on this island. I will definitely come back. read more

One of the guys here couldn't find the issue as to why my car was running odd. He told me to sell my car as soon as I could. I tried to get more information as to why he was telling me this and he wouldn't give me an actual answer. Turns out it was a very minor issue and an easy fix. Would not recommend because of bad service and I don't think they truly look at your car. read more

I started having issues with the transmission of my older model SUV which started approx. six months ago. I took my SUV to my normal mechanic to be checked out including whether i had enough transmission fluid which i couldn't check myself because it was a sealed transmission. My mechanic ( who is not a transmission specialist) supposedly added transmission fluid as part of the annual maintenance and told me that i may have to replace my transmission at $$$$$. The transmission still had issues - which weren't major so i continued driving my SUV. However there was always a concern in the back of my mind that something worse could happen one day. So for my peace of mind - I went to Yelp to check out transmission specialists and found Ray's Transmission who had good reviews and was located in town ( Queen Street) I called and connected to a friendly lady who scheduled an appointment the following week to check out my transmission. I arrived at the appointment and met Neal, the owner. He discussed with me the possible causes and even showed me a disassemble transmission in his shop that he was working on to point out possible causes of my issues. I went back the next day after being told my car was ready. Apparently the issue was that the Transmission fluid was low! He filed it and the transmission worked great. The price was reasonable and acceptable to me. My transmission now works great w/o the prior issues. He also advised me of several other issues with my car ( non - transmission related) that i should follow-up on along with servicing recommendations for my transmission. I am very pleased with the work, attitude and professionalism of Neal! I highly recommend! read more

Blessings from above with quality customer service at Ray's Transmission. Being a returning customer it doesn't get much better than that. Neal & Gail sacrifices so much that customers don't see that's why they deserve 10-Stars. Our service request was fulfilled in repairing my mother's transmission/sensors! Fair, affordable and feeling valued was an experience we will never forget! I recommend Ray's Transmission for all kama'aina's! read more

Neal was recommended by a mechanic that said " Neal is the best transmission guy " and he was right. When Subaru Servco on Waialae was charging me $8k and others were charging me $5k he fixed my car for $300, Yes !!! $300 dollars. He saved me thousands, What else I can say ? Neal is the best !!! Honest man !!! Hard to find !!! Real " Aloha " is given. Family business run by Neal and his wife Gail who is also super helpful and professional. Great service, fast response, and the repair took as long as I expected. It turned out my car's issue was incredibly silly/minor and Ray's charged a fair price for the diagnosis and repair. I definitely recommend Ray's for car issues. Be aware that they may be booked solid, but they are worth the wait for an appointment. read more

Ray's took 3 mins to look at my trans and immediately knew the problem. He removed the expensive high quality transmission gasket (installed by previous owner) that was squeezed beyond recognition and causing a trans fluid leak. Saved me thousands as i thought it might be the input shaft seal or rear main engine seal. You cannot put a price on experience. Bring your Trans to Rays, they will do a great job! read more

Very honest and easy to work with! Neal is very upfront with what's going on with your vehicle.

Neil is just the best, they made it super simple for me to know exactly what was wrong with my car and how they could fix it! Also a affordable price compared to other estimates I have gotten. Great quality work and if anything ever happens again I will come back! read more

With the way I abuse & neglect my cars, I'll probably be back here again, but I don't mind bringing my business here at all. From my initial phone call to picking up my car, the service was nothing short of excellent! As I drove off I was in disbelief that the car I initially dropped off was the same car that I was now driving, it felt like a whole new car, they really did an amazing job! Definitely would recommend Ray's. Uncle Neal knows his stuff. I was told today by a female employee who answered the phone that my transmission fluid needed to be changed every similar to engine oil. She also indicated that the transmission fluid was just emptied and not flushed or sucked out. THIS IS NOT WHAT IS RECOMMENDED BY HONDA FOR A 2009 CIVIC. Just ask Honda or consult the owners manual. It is true that Honda need to change this fluid more that other automobiles b/c there is no filter system for transmission fluid. This person either out right lied or do not know what she is talking about. She did know the cost: $160 for drain and fill. Honda will do it the right way for $199 meaning it will suck out all 10 qts and then refill with new fluid. Changing trans fluid in Civic 09: 1st change: 3 yrs or 45K 2nd change 2 yrs or 30K I felt this place is a scam. I heard there is another trans place right down the road from here. Maybe they will be better:( THUMBS DOWN!!!!!! read more

My girlfriend took our car in to get the transmission checked out, due to some issues we had been experiencing. The mechanic informed her that the transmission was damaged and that she needed a new one, which would cost more than the car. We decided to think about what we would do. Luckily a friend of ours checked out the car and informed us that we were just very low on transmission fluid. We refilled the transmission fluid and everything is working perfectly. Either this mechanic didn't notice something as simple as the transmission fluid being low, or he was trying to scam us. Either way, not a good look. Do better. read more

After a call out for recommendations of where to bring a car for some transmission issues, I ended up going to Ray's due to availability (as in, they were able to have a look the day that I called). It sounds like there's no shortage of great transmission places around Queen St...! Owner Neal was very friendly and able to slip in my car to his schedule. Dropped off around 9am, and by 10am or so they called with a diagnosis, and the car was ready by 1pm. It was a quick fix (sensor replaced) but one of his guys also caught I had another faulty part so they went ahead and replaced. Prices are fair in my opinion. I'm hopeful this gives me a bit more use out of my car (it's a 2007 model). A plus is that the shop is close to some Biki stations if you need to get yourself to work in town (of Queen Street and also at Blaisdell). Thanks Neal for the help! read more

I brought my car in to replace a burned out headlight. Because it was a special kind of headlight JiffyLube would not do the work. So glad for the referral to Ray's. Neil was patient and attentive when I explained my problem. He was very open and forthright with his responses. I brought the car back for a scheduled appointment and the headlight was serviced, along with an additional item I requested. I was able to come back to pick up the car in just two and a half hours and Gayle handled the credit transaction. My attempt at playing garage mechanic with my transmission went horribly wrong. My sports car wouldn't drive and needed to be towed. I just wanted to jump on here and leave an honest review on my service and experience at this business. Took my Tacoma into the shop at 7:30 am so I would make it to work on time. A little early, so I appreciated the employees being there to accommodate. Very friendly staff. I should also mention when I booked my appointment I talked to two different employees and they were both so friendly and kind and answered all my questions with complete honesty. Don't be fooled by the size of this shop! It is small but I swear my truck is running and starting smoother than ever. Less vibration in the pedals and at idle it is HUMMING (with 112k miles) gears grab better and have no delay when shifting from D,4,3,2,L (if that makes sense) anyway, thank you to everyone there that took care of me. The people at Ray's Transmission Service Center are the best you'll find in Oahu. My 98 Nissan Sentra was acting up and I thought for sure it was the transmission. I brought it over and told them I was a UH grad student on a very small budget. They told me they would take care of me and they did. They called the next day and said the problem was my A/C compressor and that as long as I did not run my air conditioning, the car didn't need any fixes. The compressor and labor would have been $1K, but they advised against doing the job b/c the car just wasn't worth the repair. I came and picked it up and they didn't even charge me the standard $110 diagnosis and estimate. They are honest, friendly, and top notch. You really don't get a lot of this in Hawaii. I'll be returning when I need repairs in the future. Super happy that they saved me a grand. read more

I needed a transmission flush. I called and was able to bring my vehicle in immediately. I went to grab lunch while they worked on my car. When I came back my car was ready to go. They performed the flush, checked my other fluids, and provided recommendations. Great service! My only drawback was that they replaced my Air Intake Tube without giving me a call first to ensure I could afford the extra expense. It needed to be done, they showed me the old broken part, but normally a courtesy call is done before additional services are rendered. They only charged me for the part (which was $118) and not the labor, so I didn't make a fuss. Since my service I've received a holiday card with a small calendar and follow up reminder. Highly recommend! read more

Before I moved to San Francisco I took my car to Ray's Transmission for 10 years. This business has been around since 1964 (almost 50 years), originally owned by Ray & Carol who retired and their son Neal took it over. He's been in the business for at least 20 years. I took an Oldsmobile, and two Toyotas over a 10-year period there and received the best care for my vehicles. They specialize in transmission and are incredibly knowledgeable and honest. They do other services as well and dispatched a tow company for me when I was stuck on the freeway. If you want a place you can trust and get great service, I highly recommend Ray's Transmission. If there is something wrong with your car that they don't work on, they can provide a referral since they've been in the industry for almost five decades. read more

I needed my transmission flushed because of contamination of oil in the transmisssion. I took it to Ray's after finding him on the internet. It was flushed which cost $400. I took it to my regular mechanic to do some other work and he said there was a leak in the transmission oil pan and take it back to have it fixed. It took another week to get an appointment. Dropped it and within 10 min. was called back and said it needed a selenoid pac to fix the leak. I preceded to order one from Mopar parts in the mainland. I called Ray's office many times to make sure the part that was advised on line was the one I needed. The office did not return my calls so I went to the shop and was greeted with Ray who said he did not want to do the repairs because he did not trust me and said he thought I was going to record him. He said he didn't feel we had a good working relationship. I was confused about this claim so I left. I now have been without a car for over a month. read more

Gail and Neal were absolutely great! I brought my 2009 Subaru Forrester in to check out the transmission since Subaru couldn't find anything wrong with the car after spending almost $900 at their Kaimuki location. All Subaru wanted to due was service the car not fix the problem. Neal drove the car a couple of times and found exactly what I was talking about relative to vibration from 3rd gear to 4th gear (Automatic). He found a non Subaru service bulletin that described the problem and solution (why couldn't Subaru do this?). Bottom line he gave me a quote and a time frame. Much to my surprise he completed the work one day early and $300 less than quoted!!!!! I believe my Subaru will run great for another few years thanks to Neal's ability to problem solve. I highly recommend this organization. Jerry read more
