    Mushroom Swiss burger and fries
    Theda B.

This place is right on the main drag. Small, only open for breakfast and lunch. I ordered mushroom Swiss burger and fries. Burger came with Swiss and American cheeses, sautéed mushrooms and onions. Burger was very good, cheese melted perfectly. Stop in and try it. Their sweet tea was good also. Staff very friendly.

Super old school diner with amazing breakfast options! Service isn't the greatest though because there is only one lady who does everything besides the cooking so we had to go find her when it came time to pay our bill. Besides that, I enjoyed the food and restaurant decor. A lot of locals seem to eat here in the morning, and I can see why. It's just a nice homely feeling getting some fresh coffee and hot food while enjoying pleasant conversations. Would recommend to anyone to stop by when visiting Key West in Florida.

Very busy and loud with close sitting. We never got the water we asked for with our coffee. Had to ask for spoon to stir the creamer and my husband asked for refill and the waitress did everything but refill his cup. Seems if you are a tourist you get substandard food and service. My bacon was way overcooked so I didn't even eat it. Biscuit was too dense and tasteless. Not impressed when we got our $33 bill for crappy food.

We stay in Marathon for a week between Christmas and New Years - so we aren't locals - and we're not regulars at the Wooden Spoon. Over the past 3 or 4 years, however, I've made it a point to patronize the Wooden Spoon at least once for a delicious breakfast. The Wooden Spoon has seating available at the counter or at tables located as soon as you walk through the door. Initially, I felt like the wait staff was annoyed at anyone who wasn't a local or a regular, but over the past few visits that feeling has disappeared. The waitstaff seem pleasant and glad to have the business, even from out-of-towners. As soon as you sit down, someone brings you a coffee and water. Not long after that, the server is over to take your order. The food is cooked to order and usually comes out very quickly. I am a breakfast fanatic, so that's what I order. The Wooden Spoon is one of the few establishments in Marathon that serve scrapple. Yum!!! I do recommend this business because the service is pleasant and quick and the food is hot and delicious.

While this place seemed like a good idea at the outset, on our trip from Key West, North, it disappointed. Food was decent, but service was rushed and I FOUND A STRAY BACON PIECE AND STRAY HAIR IN THE FOOD. My burger omelet had a bacon piece on the center (edge of photo, pushed to side of plate), and the hair was on a piece of cheese. Service was rushed. Near closing, around noon on a Saturday, when the restaurant closes at 1pm, it was very busy, and the restaurant was understaffed. We waited approximately 15 minutes after sitting down before getting a menu. Servers would get our order then leave very quickly, so we had to wait long before finding out where the restroom was (outside around back), getting the water we asked for previously and to get cream for coffee. The clown chowder was hearty and tasty. The bowl size was small, even though it was the larger non cup option. I went to the counter to tell staff that there was bacon on the food which I can't eat it. They didn't offer to remake the food or provide any discount. Later when I saw the hair on the omelette I didn't say anything since staff was so busy and rushing around. I also don't think the complaint would have been well received. If asked how the food was I would have mentioned the hair, but no one came by after we got the cheque or asked about our experience. Overall, decor was quaint and homey, with that 50s diner feel. If not for the kitchen prep errors, and hasty service I would have rated this place higher.

This was a recommended breakfast place by our hotel. After hearing it was a Marathon staple restaurant having been in Marathon for a long time, we should try it out. It's nothing to look at, however, the food was priced fairly, came out quickly and we were satisfied. I did splurge and get the iced chocolate and strawberry coffee, which was delicious. The service was okay as well as the ambiance. Good experience.

We had a fast and filling breakfast here. It is very local diner/luncheonette small restaurant. They were quite busy here midweek -- even around 9:30 am. They had a number of breakfast specials on the board in addition to their regular menu. Unfortunately, the biscuits didn't live up to the hype of the previously read reviews. They were just okay. Perhaps they would be better first thing in the morning? Anyhow, although large they were not very fluffy. The sausage gravy was just okay, also. However, I did really like their crispy bacon and slightly spicy home fries. And their eggs were fine. PS make sure you check your bill before paying. We were charged for coffee that we didn't have.

At mile marker 51 in Marathon. A small, bustling joint with quick service, charismatic staff, and delicious homestyle food! Fun wooden spoon decor, natural light, with counter and table seating. Come in and seat yourself, even join an existing table if needed. Staff will greet you quickly and things will move fast! Breakfast and lunch options, open early! Homemade biscuits and crispy Belgium waffles. A favorite local breakfast joint with humorous and friendly staff! Go enjoy!

It's legitimately one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the Florida Keys, which gives it a lot of built-in credibility before you even sit down. Walking up to it, you feel that history. The exterior, the gravel lot, the signage--it's pure roadside Keys. Inside, it leans into that "local bar meets tourist stop" vibe: long wooden bar, TVs, stickers everywhere, taps lined up. Then you open the menu and it pivots in every direction--New England chowder house, BBQ joint, burger shack, seafood spot. It's not clear what it wants to be, and that lack of focus carries straight through to the food. We started with both chowders. The clam chowder looks right at first glance, but the texture tells you everything--thick, almost gluey, clearly roux-heavy. The flavor leans aggressively fatty, closer to margarine than butter, with very little clam presence. No briny backbone, no pepper, no lift. We ended up dumping in black pepper and hot sauce just to make it remotely acceptable--but even then, that heavy fat note kept pushing through. Nothing about it reads as New England. The conch chowder fares a bit better. You can actually see a decent amount of conch, and there's a peppery edge that helps. But the broth is thin and lacks the chunky, stewed tomato depth you expect from a proper Keys-style conch chowder. After having it done right earlier at Key Largo Fisheries, the difference was obvious. Then there are the Texas Twinkies--and the photo really says it all. On paper, this should work: jalapeños wrapped in bacon, stuffed with brisket, pulled pork, cheeses, and sauce. In execution, it's just too much. Too much cream cheese, too many competing sauces, meats chopped into a soft, indistinct filling. It collapses into a heavy, muddy bite that feels more overwhelming than satisfying. Looking back at the menu, the simpler move--burger, ribs, even wings--probably would have been the right call. Instead, we ordered straight into the identity crisis. And that theory held up. We went back and grabbed a burger later--cooked a proper medium rare, with well-done, crispy fries--and it was easily the best thing we had from them. I wanted to like Herbie's. There's history, personality, and clearly a loyal following. But between the confused concept and uneven execution, the move here is simple: stick to the basics.
