I was pleasantly surprised by this breakfast joint, tucked in the downtown of a college town. Upon entering you think it is going to be like any breakfast place, however it's a gem! Service- so I judged our waitress very quickly and regretted it later on. She came off as very rushed and short with us, which I understand in a busy environment. However later on, she came up to me and complimented me as well as conversed when she had the time. She was very pleasant, just busy, so take this into account when you sit down! Atmosphere- very crowded and fast paced restaurant, but no wait for us on a weekend morning. Coffee- comes in random logo mugs from around town, never goes cold as it is constantly being filled by staff which I love, fresh and tasty. Food- I chose the Cajun skillet with cheese on the side. The food is so good here, I could come here any time of day, that they are open. The Chai Tea Latte is obviously a custom blend, and out dices their coffee any day. This is our second stop at the Broken Yolk and it was really good both times. First time was a week day and it was busy but not packed. Second time was a Saturday and they are definitely a local breakfast hot spot. The food was delicious, I enjoyed an omelet the first time that was perfectly cooked. This time I had the Big Bad Wet Breakfast Burrito. I have to say the later was out of this world. My wife got the Corn Beef Hash with cubes of delicious meat. The service is very friendly the only draw back is they were a little slow getting our order taken, but they appeared to be under staffed, not sure if that is the norm or not so I border on a 4/5 rating. I thought it odd that the corned beef hash I ordered would come with home fries but when I got the dish I found that the hash took up a mere quarter of the plate and had about five lumps of meat in it. I really enjoyed my breakfast at Wisecracks a few days ago. It was called, "Julia Child's Love Child" and was a type of eggs Benedict served perfectly fried potatoes and as bed of asparagus and ham. Fourth time visiting Corvallis. We have wanted to try this place for awhile and so glad we finally did. Bustling local business in a great downtown area. Large menu, generous portions, and good prices. I had one egg combo with bacon, hash browns, and toast. My husband had The Double Dipper with eggs, bacon, sausage, and pancakes. We both like our bacon crispy and they did not disappoint. His pancakes might have been the best we've ever had in a restaurant. My over medium egg was perfect and the hash browns were amazing. The service was efficient and friendly. They don't really need my positive vibes, as business seems to be thriving in these challenging times (mid morning on a Monday was busy!); however, I am trying to be more diligent with reviews as Yelp is very helpful when traveling. read more

Very unfriendly service, weren't greeted, server took forever to get to table when it wasn't busy, chicken fried steak was good but hash browns cold and biscuit hard. Girl who carried food out was wearing gross sweats and carried my plate on her shoulder inches from her mouth and turned and breathed on my plate as she passed the food. I have no idea why this place has so few reviews because it has been there since 2007 and it was packed on a Tuesday morning! This is a little jewel. The coffee was amazing, the portions are huge, the service was great and the food was delicious!! We will definitely return for breakfast. Which is served all day. WiseCracks, why are you the only game in town? OK, I admit, I found you on a game day, I'm working the game (television) and staying at the Marriott, and I'm on my own. Diner breakfast is what I'm after, and I'm on foot. A walk up 2nd and down 3rd and I quickly realize you're pretty much the only game in town, save for a bakery, a sports bar open for breakfast, and a Staubucks. Wisecracks, I passed you by first time down the street because I saw so many people lined up at your front door. But I had to try you, there was nowhere else to go! Lucky for me, I was just one, and your little counter with five or six seats was just perfect. I got the one across from the opening, so I could see into the kitchen area and see all the young college coeds preparing everything for egad - everyone! What a busy place! In moments the seat next to me was filled and I thought it cute the server mistook me and the lady next to me as a couple - ha! Coffee pretty quick and all my condiments right there in front of me. I tried your first item on the menu, a sort of vegetarian scramble and wow was it delicious! The cheese, the spinach, it was perfect! Unfortunately the side of home fries was not up to par. They were dry and flavorless, like you took them from a frozen bag and placed in the oven with no seasoning or style. Also, I'm not a vegetarian, so I ordered a side of sausage. 5 bucks was too much to pay for four sausage links, two of which were severely overcooked and almost inedible. All told, I had a pleasant experience at your very, very busy cafe. I loved the decor, the servers were all friendly, and I had fully intended to go back the next day. Alas, when I arrived Saturday morning, the line outside had doubled, and after a quick jaunt through the dining area, I could see I'd have no luck jumping into an empty seat at the counter again. I also drizzled their Gramma's Homemade Strawberry Jam on top and it was so good. I don't live in Corvallis, but I would totally drive out their to try more on their menu. I was really happy with Broken Yolk, although I did have 1 issue which was caused by the menu not being descriptive enough. I think everything about this place is 5 star except the menu. I ordered the corned beef hash, and let me say that I was blown away because they use solid chunks of corned beef which is as awesome as it is rare. Legit quality meat. Everything else was spot on as well like bread, jam and eggs. The server was awesome too. Really friendly and attentive. My wife ordered a hot chocolate which was quality as well. My issue with the menu is that it seemed really descriptive but completely omitted the fact the my dish was riddled with onions, which I hate. I am really tempted to give 3 stars because it's such a frustrating issue that happens so often, but this place is just too legit (it's basically 5 star). P.S. The bathroom was clean. read more

We've hit this place twice now since our daughter started at OSU and it's legit. The portions are large and the service is good. They have all the basics and then some with a twist. My daughter goes for the Slammich, which is grilled Texas-style French toast smothered in cheddar, Swiss, scrambled eggs, then sprinkled with powdered sugar. Tess did a great job taking care of us. The coffee was delicious with plenty of timely refills, if needed. Our food was ordered and delivered in a timely manner. I've eaten here about three times and each time was good. I got scrambled eggs and bacon last time I went, and both were cooked just the way I like - eggs weren't overly cooked (which I hate) and bacon was nice and crispy. I've also eaten a couple of the omelettes and those were good as well (I can't remember which ones I tried). Service was good each time I went, and coffee refilled on a regular basis. It can become crowded, but I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a table. I haven't gone on a weekend, so I'm assuming it's much busier and the wait longer. It seems like the reviews are inconsistent, but I've had a good experience each time I've gone there. I work in Corvallis more than once a month, so I'm sure I'll be back. read more

It appears the spotty service has come back to Wise-Cracks/Broken Yolk. I've come twice in two weeks in November, 2019, both times mid-week around 11-12. Both times I've had a middle-aged gal named Dena (brunette with glasses). I got her name from the receipt. First trip, service was slow and it was hard to get a refill without flagging someone down. Food was great of course. Second time back really got to me though. We were sat by a younger gal who seemed to be all over the restaurant the entire time we were there. Definitely stayed busy while it seemed like the rest of the staff spent a lot of time in the back. She brought us water and said someone would be with us shortly. Dena eventually slid in to our table after about five minutes and asked quickly if we were going to want coffee. We did so she went about her business. About five minutes later, our coffee comes and Dena takes our order and afterward she says she'll be back with a refill of water. The food eventually made its way to us very quickly by the gal who sat us. Food was amazing. It came out quick and tasted amazing, as it always does. We didn't see Dena come back though. She appeared to be MIA for about ten minutes, then reappeared and would be at other tables, but never came back to refill water or coffee. Not once. After finishing our food and drinks are now bottomed out (1/2 hour), Dena drops the bill at the table and walks away. Didn't ask to refill. I pay with card and promptly leave after she brings the receipt back. It really wasn't that busy here on both times. Dena has consistently been slow or not attentive. Every other waitress or waiter I've contacted there though has been good. read more

When I lived in Corvallis, Broken Yolk was one of my favorite weekday breakfast spots. And every time I come to visit, I make it a point to stop there as my last meal in town--a hearty breakfast to hit the road! Normally, I'd be inclined to give this place 5 stars. The food is always killer, it comes up quickly without sacrificing quality, the staff is friendly and the joint is always tidy. My last visit though, the service wasn't up to past experiences. There was a large party in the back half of the restaurant and while we were seated promptly, it did feel like the front of half of the restaurant was being neglected. I'm pretty patient, having service industry experience, but we waited a very long time even to get waters. And when we had finished our waters, my dining companion, after another wait, went up to ask a staff member for more... which seemed to annoy the staff member. I don't know. It wasn't the usual 5 star experience I'm used to here at Broken Yolk; but I won't let it affect my decision to return because hey, sometimes big parties monopolize servers and the kitchen and you just have to roll with it. So my only recommendation to those considering breakfast here: if there's a huge group present, maybe skip this establishment if you're in a hurry. Otherwise, a little patience will go a long way. Also, the iced coffee is sweet and comes with whipped cream and chocolate sauce so if you're not into your ice coffee getting dressed up like a Starbucks concoction, order a regular coffee. read more

We stopped by here for a quick lunch. We ordered the eggs benedict and Spanish omelet. My daughter had the eggs benedict so I don't know how good it was but I wasn't very impressed with my Spanish omelet. It was marked as spicy on the menu because of the chorizo but I could hardly taste any chorizo in my omelet. The only things I tasted in the omelet were eggs and bell peppers and the omelet was kind of bland like the cook forgot to put salt in it. The only thing good on the plate was the hash browns. The waitress took awhile to get our order.. we had our menus closed for quite some time and there was practically no one here. I heard that this was one of the more popular breakfast spots in Corvallis so I decided to check it out with a friend. My friend who had lived in Corvallis before told me that the items on their menu were overall really good, but make sure I got the English muffin and jam with whatever I got. I ordered the western omelette and it was good but nothing that put it over other western omelettes I have had in the past. The English muffin and jam that I had was pretty good and it was one of my favorite parts of my meal, but it doesn't taste any different than other jams or jellies I have had in the past. The service we received was pretty good. Our waitress checked up on us every so often and made sure my water was never empty, which I appreciate. Kinda pricey, but a quaint little place to get breakfast. They had a bunch of seating in the back that was for some reason closed off. I felt bad for the people waiting in line for a seat. The menu boasted about "grandmas jam" that was a syrup in a squeeze bottle made from corn syrup. It spread out on the toast and made it soggy. I had the hobo hash which was more like a scramble, but good. The kids got a the french toast sticks plate which was a piece of french toast cut into 3 sticks and scrambled eggs for $5.50 a plate... which wasnt worth it. There was a play area that wasnt open, nor did anybody working there offer it for our rowdy toddlers. I wouldn't really consider this place family friendly and if we lived in town this isnt a place I'd bring my kids due to the price of their dish alone.
