We were looking for a place to have breakfast enroute to Newport which could accomodate one vegan and two non-vegans. I was delighted to see that WiseCracks had a separate vegan menu as well as gluten-free options. SCORE! The service was great, and the food was really good. However, only one of the vegan meal options contained a protein (black beans)-none of the other vegan dishes included any legumes, quinoa, or soy products. Offering protein options for these dishes would make them more nutritious and satisfying. Otherwise, a great experience. read more

I decided to try this place on Christmas Eve due to all the good reviews. Sadly it did not quite live up to them for me or the people I was with. The ambience was very loud. The music was annoying, and it was very hard to carry on a conversation with the person directly across from me. Our server was pretty nice and the food came out pretty quick, actually faster than I expected, but the taste for us was nothing spectacular. My breakfast burrito was extremely dry despite being a wet burrito. It looked like they brushed the sauce on the outside to give it a light coating rather than pouring it over which meant there was no sauce for the very dry interior. The loaded hashbrowns were actually pretty good. They were crispy and moist. They did not include bacon which loaded hashbrowns in my experience usually should but they were good. I'm not sure how often I'll be back because there are other places in town that I do like quite a bit more. read more

They are following guidance for social distancing and offer take outs and dine in in available with every other table blocked off. Came on a regular Thursday 8:30am to celebrate my significant others birthday. A bit bummed no welcoming greeting considering we were the only ones that stood waiting. We stood at the door entrance for a good 7-10 minutes with multiple of their servers having made eye contact back and resumed their conversations. No one acknowledged that we were waiting and tell other servers to take us. There is a sign-in sheet but we were the only one at the door waiting for dine in. There were cups for clean/dirty pens but they were empty also. We waited another 10 mins until our server came and when she came she didn't even introduce herself. I asked for clarifications on the menu and she pointed to the QR codes on wall for online menu to view on your smartphones. Not sure if this was more or less efficient unless you noticed the codes before the actual menu. A lot of options on menu but I only saw two for Benedict's or "bennys" and apparently there's one more for avocado bacon on their online menu. The plates for entrees are large and fairly decent size for breakfast so that's a plus. We ordered loco moco and traditional eggs benefits. if you've eaten it you know it's a well known Hawaiian favorite. It is is a dish featured in contemporary Hawaiian cuisine usually its white rice, topped with hamburger patty, a fried egg, and brown gravy. This was a bit different which is totally fine and it is always nice to try different variations. Down side is server didn't ask to confirm the desired rareness of the burger patty nor was that an option given. When the dish came out it looked GREAT but upon first bite---- too burnt and although covered with gravy, you can still taste the dryness and burntness. Served with two fried eggs and your choice of toast. There has only one kind of jam to eat with your bread- it's "grandmas jam". It comes in a squeeze bottle which makes is easier or less messy. The consistency and sweetness however reminded me of the syrupy taste from the strawberry compote/sauce. Toast were served in an already buttered state so not really crunchy. Maybe would be good to have as an option or ask if prefer to have butter on the side. Second entree was traditional eggs Benedict with ham and I chose their home fries which is like small diced and lightly seasoned potatoes that goes in the fryer. It was less than I expected for "ordinary eggs Benedict". I didn't sub for anything or ask for have anything cooked well done. The muffin didn't taste fresh, like it was overcooked in a way where I found it really hard to cut apart with knife and I tasted oil/grease. Again, not at all how I had imagined it to be, I did finish it all because I was hungry. I gave the potatoes to my partner instead. This was somewhat a disappointment for me because I LOVE eggs Benedict. Our server never came to check in on us until near the end when we were going to get a box but she had left so quickly as she asked the question that we couldn't even stop her in her tracks. We asked the 4th server that passed our table for a box/container and then waited another 5 minutes for our check. At this point yes, we were getting to the point that we just wanted to leave so I walked up to counter to pay. Our server saw us and said "I was going to walk around and go back there eventually but you are just sometimes faster than me." ......I didn't even have anything to say because it didn't sound like a compliment nor did it sound like me walking up lightened her workload whatsoever. Done deal -- signed receipt and she didn't even give me a copy before she turned and rushed off somewhere else. I didn't bother asking and as we walked out I passed by 3 other servers that didn't greet or seemed busy at all.. they were talking amongst themselves. Parking = offstreet Ambience = laidback like most cafes Food = 3 stars for mediocre Service = 2 stars, I tipped even though no one came to check on us until we were done 85-90% of our plate. If she was the only server that hour we were there I'd understand or on a Saturday-Sunday but this was on a Thursday morning with no lines outside and extra servers standing around. I really don't get it and I really was looking forward to breakfast here because of the reviews I heard from others. This was also for a birthday so yes, very bummed out. Don't think I'd consider trying again. Brick and Mortars is consider more superior when compared. read more

I ordered the Chicken and waffles and pecan bacon, these are never disappointments. Always made so well and the presentation is great. I could always do with more slices of bacon than just 3. It was a busy service as it has been in the past, but luckily I did not get stuck in a line like I usually am. We were seated quickly and served quickly. Super nice staff and helpful. Will be back for sure. Flavors are on point and it's a great take on southern cuisine, not the most authentic, but it's fun to try the different dishes. Parking was a bit of an issue since it's almost in a residential area and there was construction on the main street going on at the same time. So we called 5 separate times throughout an hour only to get the same message to either order online or keep trying. So we decided to walk down and order takeout there. When we walked into the diner we waited a good 5+ minutes before anyone even acknowledged us. Not because they were short staffed, they had multiple workers in the back chatting to each other. Our takeout order took around 30 minutes and was missing a side and they didn't give us a receipt. We've gone previously and the food was okay, just diner food, kinda bland nothing special. The coffee tasted like the coffee you get at a waiting room. Like others have mentioned the one nice thing is this location is in the middle of downtown so it's easy to walk to. Not being aware they closed at 3pm, I stooped in a quarter before closing and took my time going through their menu, it being my first time here. Everything sounded good so I went with their everything choice: The Kitchen Sink and a glass of iced tea. The tea was a huge mason jar and the Kitchen Sink was a deliciously greasy-spoon bowl of meats and cheeses on hash browns with a couple of fried eggs and toast on the side. Yum. Although I didn't have to explain myself, since I hobbled in on my walking stick, they were in no hurry to usher me out. I needed food to dampen the effects of meds I had just taken -- that and time help me over the light-headed phase before I'm steady on my feet again and able to drive safely. So I sat alone in the store enjoying my unhurried meal as they cashed and cleaned up. Finally, when I was good to go, I had to ask them to break a Benjamin to pay for my meal. No problem, they dived into the cash bag and made change for me. Very accommodating. So while my late lunch wasn't the healthy choice I typically make, it's what I needed to calm my meds and was given all the time I needed after closing to finish my meal and get going again. Communication nonexistent, tables without everyone there seated ahead of smaller groups with everyone there, apparently theres counter seating available first come but no signs or verbal heads up given. Seated first near the restrooms despite plentiful tables with chairs up midway. The smell of the bathroom and it's chemicals was obvious before getting halfway there. Sat at the counter where we proceeded to watch no less than 3 employees touch the food on SEVERAL plates going out with their unwashed bare hands. The same hands they'd used to wipe their noses, touch money, pat their pants, grab menus and more. How do they even get past the health inspectors?! Understanding how food borne illnesses are spread, including E. coli is not something they're concerned with. Cheap food products used, employee coats and purses left right in the customer area as well (these too were touched right before they messed with the food on your plate!). read more

We like the food. We like the service. We DO NOT like the fact that they added an unexplained "surcharge" to the credit card slip when we paid our bill. Turns out, it was a 3.5% surcharged added for using a credit card to pay. Now, while that may be legal, it is very bad form and a great way to turn off customers. Credit cards are a cost of doing business. It's a cost that MY business absorbs. What is NOT legal about the practice is that they are required to PROMINENTLY notify customers, prior to making the sale (serving the customers), that this surcharge will be added. WiseCracks does not do this. They are, in fact, in violation of the law in the State of Oregon. Passing on these charges in this very sneaky way is not an acceptable (nor legal) practice. We have dined there several times but today was the last time thanks to this surcharge. read more

Went here after power went out just for breakfast at our Airbnb. They have gluten free (GF) items, but clearly state on menu that they can't guarantee zero cross contact, which to me, at least says they understand celiac. I opted to NOT try their GF French toast or GF cinnamon due to that statement, and they make the items themselves. However, I did ask if I could get bacon and eggs made in separate pans. The eggs are already done that way and the bacon has its own cooking machine. I then chose a fruit cup as my side. Fresh food! read more

Read all the one star reviews previously before heading here and thought that it wouldn't matter, as I have eaten here before and have liked it. However I was very wrong, there's a reason as to why there are more 1 star reviews than 5 star reviews and that is due to the lack of flavor and skill in the food. The staff are very friendly and kind but it's not enough to make up for the lack of delicious food. Seeing as to that's what a restaurant should be for. I ordered the loco moco seeing as that's what I usually get, however it is no longer the same. The meat was burnt and over cooked and with every bite I took, the flavor only got worse. The cooks must have thought dunking sauce all over my patty would have covered up the burnt taste but no. It only made it more clear. I would not recommend ever coming here and I will never eat here again. Would zero star if possible. read more

When you got a baby, you know waking up super early is part of the game so we're always on the lookout for places that open early so we can keep the family busy (and fed!). At this time of morning the parking was easy (in front of the restaurant, street parking, free) but I'm not sure about other times of day. Even at around 7 AM the place had a waiting list, so it was about 15 minutes before we got a table. The food came quickly and in big portions.
