The ambiance is lovely- nicely decorated with farm inspired touches. The menu was slightly disappointing- not many options and nothing very cohesive about the dishes. They were out of a few menu items also which further limited the selection. I chose the Brie and bacon burger which came with a choice if sides (corn, potato salad, or fries). It was good but definitely not worthy of the $20 price. I was disappointed in the lack of greens- for a restaurant that seems like it would have incredible salads there wasn't even any lettuce on the burger. The hash was absolutely outstanding with aioli just brushing enough of all of the (locally sourced and fresh) veggies that made up the hash. Plus, as everyone says, the bacon! The wait up to get seated was unnecessary - the hostess had three open 2-tops for ten minutes but was seating groups in sign-in order regardless of size. Seemed amateur (turn rate overtime equals better business). The service is leisurely, which is fine but not when friendly nonchalance borders on 'our way or the highway.' That said, upon leaving the hostess greeted me by name (it'd been awhile since we'd met) and that showed the attention to detail that makes Wise Acre Eatery a wonderful place. We let the cool exterior and the decent-looking menu fool us. Waited 20 minutes to order despite there only being a few other tables. Ordered three things. Took another 20 minutes to find out they were out of one (lemonade) and had messed up the other. The one thing they did serve up, in plentiful portions, was over-the-top hipster attitude. Love the venue and the greenery that hangs from the ceiling. It has a very homey and natural vibe to it. The waiting staff were always on top of refilling our coffee and were very nice and friendly. The winter salad was very filling and loved the bleu cheese vinaigrette. We had such a lovely dinner here. The food is farm to table--some of the freshest and most delicious meats and produce we've ever had! The ambience is warm and pleasant; our servers were super friendly; and the food is as good as it gets. We had the cheese plate, shades of spring salad, and bibimbap. It was all incredibly tasty. Simply put: Delicious! We came here on a whim and we loved it. Great list of drinks, food, and take home items. You can get farm fresh duck eggs to take home! The food was fresh, smelled amazing, and didn't take forever to come out. 3 of us split their 1/2 chicken Sunday dinner. The roasted carrots and masked potatoes were the perfect sides. The food was great. The service was downright unacceptable. I met a colleague for breakfast and arrived a few minutes early, asking for a table. The counter staff explained that you place your order at the counter, and the order is then delivered to the table. I said I'd grab a table and wait to order when my colleague arrived. More than half of the tables were open, but I was told they I was not allowed to be seated until I ordered. I was offered to wait outside on a bench, where it was raining. Once my colleague arrived, we ordered and found a table on the covered patio. The temperature had dropped from 90 yesterday to low 60s today, and it was breezy and rainy. I went inside to ask if they could turn on the overhead patio heaters. The staff member simply said, "Oh...No." I asked why and received the response "It's not cold." I stated that given the fact that I had requested it and that people on the patio were wearing jackets, it probably is cool enough. She said she'd talk to the manager. No one came to table to follow up with me on this. I would have expected the staff member or the manager to come and provide some sort of explanation other than the equivalent of "well, I'm not cold, so we're not going to do anything about it." read more

We had such a disappointing meal here. We love everything about the idea of Wise Acre but loved none of the execution. As a farm-to-table restaurant, we expected that there would be at least some vegetarian options on the menu and that those would be worthwhile. We were wrong. The beet hummus plate was just plain bad. Served with radishes, raw broccoli, slices of raw yucca (I think, it tasted like a wood root), apples, and a baguette, it was bitter on bitter. At 6:30 they were no longer offering one of the two vegetarian options on the menu so half of us got the black bean burger. The roll was stale. The black bean burger was a rock on the outside and barely warm on the inside--I'm not sure how they managed that. We chose the honey carrots as a side; they were 5 soggy, lukewarm carrots. For $19. It was one of the worst sandwiches I have had. I get that some chefs love cooking with meat. No worries. However, if you don't want to make vegetarian food, then please just don't offer it on your menu and vegetarians won't show up!! I'm stuck in a CSA hash rut. It's the perfect lunch of eggs, seasonal vegetables, a thick piece of country ham, and homemade bread/corn muffin with a side of jam. I ALWAYS order a side of fries with aoli (upon request) which comes out with a funky ketchup. I usually order a kombucha too. I love the menu concept with the gardens across the street and most everything being sourced from their farm and cooperatives. I could live in their dining room with its rustic and comfy vibe. The Royal Brie and Bacon Burger (with the best qwik pickles you'll ever eat) delivers down-home comfort right to your belly. Bring the whole meal together with a custard and white port Floozy, described as a "boozy mini-milkshake." Neighborhood Tip: If you cross the street and walk towards the Tangletown bridge, you will come across a set of stairs that lead down to Minnehaha Creek. This is a true "farm to table" experience, or as they say on their website "Plato to plate"! We had the house-made Maple Granola and the house-made Salted Caramel Sauce. This was, BY FAR, the best frozen custard that I have had in a long time. It was perfectly creamy and amazing. The Maple Granola was absolutely delicious and the addition of the dried fruit was delightful. The Salted Caramel Sauce was to DIE for. However, it is obvious that these are not restaurateurs. Every time we have been there, we are never been greeted even when we are the only people waiting to order. We have literally sat at the counter without a greeting and someone is standing right in front of us - almost purposefully ignoring us. There are always several people standing around looking like they have no idea what is going on. While I am ok with a laid back environment - could you say "hello, welcome, I'll be right with you". The first day - I completely waived it off. New restaurant, new staff. People are still figuring it out. Our food went to another table but, who I assume is the manager, quickly remedied it and we were happy to be gracious about it. The second time, there were literally 4 people including one of the owners standing behind the counter and only 1 poor guy taking orders and cashiering. It took us 15 minutes to place our order and there was only 1 person in front of us. Sigh, oh well, maybe it will be better for dinner. So we tried to go for dinner tonight, I had been looking forward to the delicious bacon brie burger all day. We were seated after waiting a while. We were passed by a waiter 4 times and never greeted or brought is water. After 15 minutes, we decided to leave. I don't think anyone even noticed. I hope, pray, beg that you consider hiring a front house manager that has managed a restaurant because it is simply different than running a garden store. I think the neighborhood will be gracious for a while but their patience may run out if it continues for too long. I will certainly be back and try again. Most the reviews I write come from the one-dude eating for one at the bar type of experience. But through the wining and dining experiences, I have found a correlation between eating for one and eating for many. I had heard of the place via friend's recommendations for a smaller farm-to-table sort of Birchword esque eatery closer to my house in South Minneapolis. It does indeed have parallel feels, a large cooler with farm fresh canned goods and a pastry display. The decor is a little over the top. Faux chickens in baskets, epithets that represent the idyllic country life that is more like a catalogue than the real deal. I sat at the bar, ordered the hoop salad. The greens were about a half a cup portion with a complementary yogurt dressing. Accompanying the greens and dressing was a beef skewer rolled meatball style and baked. It was the driest meat wad I have eaten since Christmas at my Mom's house who likes everything well, well done. I had the lunch with a beer which tallied up to close to $20. I can't miss the farm enough to blow this change on lunch. Sorry, I was left with the longing of the same dish for less from my own kitchen. Sorry Wise Acre. The bartender/server was well intended and gave a the recommendation of the light lunch salad. I took my day-off time and she rushed me out the door in the nice, Midwestern passive-agressive manner; sliding the check to me half way through my first beer. If you have a Patagonia puff jacket, have never gotten dirt in-between your nails in the garden, and prepared your own garden to-table meal, I would recommend Wise Acre. read more

I'm a sucker for pretty things, and the design of this place is O-M-G ("g" stands for "genius"). Not only that, but the burgers are fantastic too. Like I said, the atmosphere COULD NOT BE BETTER. Since its owned by Tangletown Gardens across the street, the greenery and landscaping is impeccable. There are all these little details in the design that are straight out of a magazine. There are literally gardens hanging on the walls, unique fixtures, amazing furniture, a garage door and a smart little walk-up window with some patio seating designated for that area. There's main patio seating for the restaurant too, but everything indoors feels outdoors, so no need to be sad if you can't find a space on the patio. It's awesome. My burger came with thick-sliced bacon and brie, which was like a cream spread. I ordered it medium and it came slightly over-done, but the grass-fed meat was still so juicy that I didn't even fathom sending it back. I had to put it all in my mouth it immediately. The soup of the day was some kind of fruit-laced gazpacho (maybe rhubarb?) that was just not good at all. There was a silver lining to this though. The server saw I hadn't touched the soup, so she took it off the bill without me even complaining about it. She said it seemed to be a love-hate thing with the soup that day. Some people left raving about it, others not so much. The service in general was slow-ish, but very friendly. It seemed to be a kind of team-style service that might not be the best system, but at least they were all very helpful and honest. To preserve the icy integrity of the former tenants, they still have frozen custard on the menu. Just the basics, vanilla and chocolate. Along with some gourmet toppings like cocoa nibs. Didn't try it, but it may be worth saving some room next time. They also make their own sodas! The clientele was definitely on the older side, at least it was for lunch. I think I was one of maybe seven other customers (in a full restaurant) that was under 65 years old. Maybe we just happened to be thier at the wrong time (breakfast was technically done for the day but they served it to us anyway) However if you don't have your breakfast cook on don't risk people getting a bad meal so you can make a sale! Overall the service was good, we were given 1 of the breakfasts free and felt the concern of our disatisfaction was genuine! The atmosphere was very nice and unique! I love the "natural" vibe. I loved the herb scramble and ham on the brioche bun. But after 2 bites I removed the bun. It was better without it. The ham was a little too firm especially for a sandwich, but tasted good. I was also satisfied with just a glass of water. I like how you get the option of a green salad over home fries. To fan or not to fan? That is the question. I am a fan of local & seasonal foods, but I'm not sure I can be a fan of Wise Acre (yet). For lunch, my boyfriend and I ordered: * corn dog (came with a wild rice salad) * fries w/ pumpkin cranberry sauce * bean burger * donut cupcake * coffee * milk I wanted to jump for joy when I saw the huge homemade corn dog that looked like a state fair corn dog. Both the meat and batter were powerfully...dry. Thinner batter would help make the whole corn dog juicier, methinks. Fresh, organic ingredients usually burst with flavor, but the salad was oddly dry and flavorless. There were bits of wild rice in there, but the radish or cabbage slices tasted as flavorless as a store-chain tomato. The bean burger was the best item of our order -- fries / donut cupcake / coffee were unexceptional. Milk was creamy and lukewarm -- I prefer ice-cold milk -- but I give the pumpkin cranberry sauce a shiny gold star. Finally, the servers didn't seem excited about their own restaurant. I got a ugh-work-again? vibe all around. When I go to this type of restaurant -- with some sort of powerful mission about food -- the passion is contagious all day, everyday. At Wise Acre, not so much, if at all. I am amazed that many ingredients used at this restaurant were harvested in the last 24 hours from a farm 120 miles away. I like the purpose. Unfortunately, this purpose doesn't translate into good-tasting food or vitality at Wise Acre. If you have no interest in timely or quality service, this is the place for you. Since the concept of locally sourced food is very appealing to me, I have given Wise Acre a couple of chances now, once for dinner and once for brunch. On both occasions the staff was overwhelmed by the business of the restaurant. On our first visit, my girlfriend and I waited waterless and confused for a long time, only to ultimately discover the kitchen was backed up and our food would be severely delayed. When we attempted to go there for brunch, the staff did not have the restaurant ready to open on time. A crowd collected and we all waited about a half hour extra for the doors to open. As with our dinner experience, the kitchen could not keep up with the customers. I go out to eat all of the time. I go to restaurants that are busy and restaurants that are new. I don't see any reason why Wise Acre cannot be more efficient and thoughtfully service minded. I want to like it. read more

This is the last time I come to this restaurant. I am fine with good food, and I am willing to tolerate less-than-stellar service (I have eaten at Denny's). When the waiter counters my wife's complaint that there are no vegan options on the menu with, "well, we do have vegetarian items!", I am not impressed. When the manager (!) flatly states "we are not a vegan restaurant!" and walks away without further comment, it is clear that the establishment neither needs nor wants our patronage. I just wanna say WOW. The brunch offerings were limited, but that means that they want to do a few thing really well. They were offering a burger, a salad, a breakfast sandwich, french toast, hash and an egg breakfast. I ordered the egg breakfast which included herb scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. The eggs were creamy and had fresh basil sprinkled through out. These are what scrambled eggs are supposed to be. I usually have at least a little ketchup with breakfast, even at nice places. There was no ketchup to be found here and I didn't want any! Everything on the plate was perfectly seasoned. The bacon was FANTASTIC. Hand cut, SUPER thick, fatty slab of smoky pork belly on your plate! This same bacon was in the breakfast sandwich offering, the burger and the hash. BACON EVERYWHERE. I want to come back and try it ALL. I was in heaven. I think it was consensus across the table was that the food was just delectable. I was a little wary of the french toast. It would seem that Wise Acre and I do not agree on what French Toast should be. The french toast seemed to be made from 2 inch thick slice of house made raisin bread. I like my french toast slices on the thinner side. It did not look appetizing to me. I also had a lemon blueberry scone which was also very good. I was sad that they had run out of caramel rolls and doughnut muffins, but if the point is to do it well, quality over quantity. read more

My wife and I came here for the first time for New Year's Eve dinner. It's a pretty small place but cozy enough. We got a bottle of wine to share and it was all fairly priced. The service was interesting.... I am not sure if we had an assigned server but we didn't see much of one person. There was probably 3-4 people that helped us out throughout the night. Service was pretty slow however and it wasn't because they were busy. Most of the staff would just stand by the kitchen and talking to each other. I tried to flag down people several times in the night. Also service wasn't friendly which was odd to me with it being a big dinner night on New Year's Eve. We had a beef tartar first which was ok, we have certainly had a lot better. The salad was the second shared plate and that was really good. The third coarse was pretty forgettable. The person who dropped it off said that the chef spent a lot of time on the broth... we didn't care for it. For entrees I got the pork and my wife got the Gnocchi. The pork was cooked well but lacked any seasoning or flavor. My wife liked the gnocchi. Desert was solid. I expected to like this place coming into it with such nice reviews, but maybe their specialty is brunch. A last hurrah before the blustery winter descends and I resign myself to a life of hibernation. And what a place this is to stave off the winter doldrums. Enter and you will be transported to a modern whimsical farmstead, replete with green plants growing on the wall by the ceiling. Bask in the open air feel, and rub your fingers on the distinguished wooden tables. A cozy location geared for visits of 2-4, it is nonetheless accommodating of larger parties as long as you can tolerate a wait. If you're more inclined for a quick coffee and pastry, there is a counter area with pictures of farmland on the wall, and delicious pastries laid out in front of you on the counter. Of course, a restaurant can be as beautiful as it wants, but if it fails to deliver on the food, what is the point? The brunch menu consists of a well designed paper menu, a picture of which I may have uploaded separately from this review. The daily specials are written on a chalkboard on the wall. In terms of food choices, they seem like simple brunch items with a light touch of whimzy. I elected for a brie burger. Obviously, anything containing a thick piece of bacon is immediately a contender, but the sublime addition of brie made this burger that much better. The side cobdiment of pumpkin ginger ketchup helped to elevate the pedestrian fries to a whole other level. There may be haters out there who seek to tear down the efforts of ginger to elevate your palate, and to them I say bah humbug. Service is friendly and courteous, without feeling snooty or brusque. I've been looking for a reason not to gice this olace 5 stars, and I must say I've come up empty. Side note - Be careful not to let my illustrious review raise your expectations of this place through the roof. I'm glancing at some of these less than five star reviews and it just floors me that any of you could consider this joint less than as good as it gets. Unreasonably high standards much? I'm normally pretty good with words but I can not muster up any to express how impressed I was with this place. Every aspect of it was -insert word that I cannot muster up to express something more than amazing here-. Everything is house made down to the ketchup, cooked flawlessly and tastes great. The service was so good I was on the verge of telling the server to stop being so damn hospitable and the ambiance is brilliant, sparkling, intelligent, luminous, sharp, gleaming, vivid, splendid... fucking dazzling... again... lost for words. Last but not least they sell their own free range, organic meat if you fancy home cooking. I think this world lacks local, small business butcher shops and they definitely fill that void at the door with a freezer full of chicken, pork steaks, bacon, sausage, etc. I'm new to the neighborhood and they've got themselves a new regular customer I can assure that. read more

It is with great disappointment that I draft this review. I heard good things about Wise Acre (despite it's lackluster Yelp reviews) and finally ate there last night. The one great thing about this restaurant is the building, which exudes urban chic. We were seated outside (per our request), but unfortunately we were seated at the table that is within one foot of the parking lot. Instead of enjoying the interesting and well-decorated restaurant, our view consisted of a Honda, a Subaru, and a Toyota. We eventually turned our chairs to face the restaurant, and then realized that our view was blocked by a line of potted plants. Inexplicably, the plants were placed between us and the restaurant instead of between us and the parking lot. Hmmm... Then came our wine. The wine list is interesting and I quite enjoyed the white that I ordered. Unfortunately, the pour was more in the range of a $5.50 or $6 glass of wine rather than the $7.50 pour that I was charged. Then came the food. While the concept of the restaurant (farm to table, of course) is inspiring, the food was not. I got the black bean burger which lacked flavor and was extremely dry and the fries. The fries were salty and, generally speaking, good. My husband got the Mexican plate, which apparently came with the same dry black bean burger that I choked down, I mean ate. Overall the food and wine was overpriced. Next time I dine out, it will be where the wine pours are generous and the food is seasoned appropriately. read more

We are soo lucky in the Twin Cities to have an abundance of eatery's that understand the benefits of locally sourced food. The food is what shines here at wise acre. It's top of the line, quality foodstuff prepared in a thoughtful manner. I would say the food is simple, but it's not fair to call the flavor simple. The preparation lets the food shine. The fried egg, ham and cheddar sandwich sounds simple, and really it is. It's a cut of sweet, smokey ham, a Larry Schultz Fried egg, a generous slab of white cheddar, and smear of AMAZING whole seed mustard on a Crazy delicious bun. It's just really everything I would ever dream of in a breakfast, and it makes me smile. The coffee is great here as well. On Weekends, the young lady working the coffee counter will walk your beverage of choice over and display her work of art. I recommend the caramel Latte myself. Or better yet, a Fulton with Espresso. You think it sounds weird, but try it, you'll be hooked! The environment here is top notch. It can fill up fast, but it's very comfortable and CLEARLY well designed. You'll feel right at home here. We went back a month later and the affordable dinner items we had have now been moved to the mid-day/lunch menu only. Super disappointing. This place now feels too expensive for what it is (we heard the table next to us complaining about the same thing). This now feels like what the Birchwood has become, sadly that's not a recipe for success to us. I get quality food and paying staff a livable wage, but dinner is now out for us here. For years, this was my favorite place in Minneapolis for a consistent, delicious meal. Having not been in awhile, we decided to head there for brunch a few weeks ago. We had a long wait for a table outside- that was fine- but the host couldn't and didn't provide any estimated wait time. We could have wandered next door had we known we would be waiting nearly 30 minutes. When we sat, we were ravenous. We ordered immediately, and then waited and waited for our food. It took so long! Everything out of the kitchen seemed off timing-wise. The table next to us got their bread plate essentially with the check. We got our dessert at least 20 minutes before any other food. All of this is forgivable if the food had been what we were used to at Wise Acre. My husband loved his burger but my dish was so bland and flavorless. It looked great, but I had to hunt down some salt and hot sauce to make it edible. I don't understand how eggs could leave the kitchen with zero salt or flavor. Thinking this had to have been a fluke, we went again for dinner last week. Even with a reservation and a half-full restaurant we were there nearly 2.5 hours. Food was good, but honestly not good enough to justify the wait. I now understand why the host had no idea how long the wait for a table would be. It felt like being at a restaurant that was still working out its opening kinks and not an established place. So I rarely go to restaurants when they first open. I like to let them get the kinks out and build upon what they here in reviews. I went out with some girls on Friday night and we decided to check this place out. When we got there it was packed! It is a small space but they do get a lot of people in there. We were sure we would have a long wait. Nope. Since we were only a group of 3 they seated us quickly. We ordered a bottle of one of the CA wines they were highlighting. It was delicious. As a starter we shared the mustard fingerling potatoes. I have decided I am going to steal this recipe :-)! For my main I originally ordered the Spring Chicken salad with a blue cheese vinaigrette & the corn dog. The server checked to make sure there was no mayo in the dressing but then we found out as my friends were being served there was mayo in the chicken salad served on the salad. So I ended up nibbling on the corn dog which was really good until my new main came. Dill Pickle Fried Chicken (queue choir of angels). First they brine the chicken in a family recipe pickle juice. The flavor reminded me of my Grammy's bread and butter pickles. Then southern fried. The meat is so tender and moist ... I am drooling as I write this. Definitely will go back for this. We finished the meal with the homemade custard. It was a perfect end and highly recommended. Now I couldn't forget P and his sweet tooth. I brought home a goodie for him and some for the morning too. P really (and I think I heard purring ... or was that our cat) liked the lemon bar. Definitely going back. Maybe to try the brunch :-) read more
