GusGus is a staple in St.Paul! I try to come here often as I can because the food is just amazing. We ordered the Tuna crudo and beef tartare to start off. The tartare had so much flavor to it. It had a nice mussel aoilo that really brought it together. The crudo was great as well. Had a little spice to it but felt fresh to eat. Entree: we ordered the double cheeseburger and Poutine. Have no words to describe how amazing it was and I've tried burgers all over the twin cities. The patty was cooked medium/medium rare, with carmelized onions, pickles and mustard aioli. Every bite was so delicious and flavorful, how a burger should be. The poutine was also amazing! The cheese, gnocchi and ox tail was such a wonderful and unique combo. Dessert: we ordered the dark chocolate mousse cake. It was topped with whip cream and had a piece of chocolate on top. It was amazing! Chocolate wasn't too overly powering and the whip cream balanced it out. The service was great! Checked in how we were doing and asked if there was anything needed. We were seated at the bar, which was a little spacious, but could be cramped if there are others around. The ambience there was good! It is dim but still has enough light to look at the menu. Tucked away in Saint Paul, Gus Gus is a hidden (maybe not for many) gem. There is street parking and outdoor seating available. They have it right on their website that parking can be tricky, be prepared to walk. The inside has bar seating and the restaurant may be small but is overall bigger than expected. It's elevated without giving people in jeans the side eye. We started with aperol flavored Jell-O shots. They were certainly Aperol flavored and probably the highest class Jell-O shot I've ever taken in my life. I had the spritz on special which was dill based and I was in love. I could have had 17 of them, been rolled home and been in absolute bliss. I also ordered the spritz salato and it was an equally as delicious savory cocktail. For dinner we shared the chips with speck (3.5/5). The chips were a little oily, but I'm a sucker for anything with prosciutto and crème fresh. I had the beef tartar as my main. The bread slices are pretty big. It comes with two pieces and regardless of if you are going to share or not I found myself having to cut the bread into smaller pieces. The chips worked out well as a vessel for the tartar too. Everyone else for the burger and after a singular bit I understood the hype. It has to be a top 5 burger ever. We'd heard the hype, so we had to check it out!! What I'll say off the bat, this restaurant obviously knows its shortfalls, as they are highlighted on the website, and mostly out of their control! I don't think it should stop you from going, but you should be aware before you go! Parking can be a challenge, but we found street parking about a block away. Give yourself time, have some patience, and maybe skip the high heels...they don't really match the aesthetic of this spot anyways ;) The interior is cozy and inviting: bustling service members catering to a full house of patrons in a color-drenched teal setting with adorable and whimsical wallpaper. It's absolutely a small spot, which they do their best to give you space but it's loud and can easily be overstimulating. Pair that with the warm summer months and it was uncomfortably hot in the space as well. I think I would have enjoyed this spot much more in the Fall or Winter when you're craving the comfy warmth of a crowded space. It was a bit awkward that there's no clear direction on a host stand or welcome area...you walk straight in to the restaurant and it's unclear what you're supposed to do or where you're to go. We aimlessly wandered around the restaurant looking for a host stand until some waitress said we are just supposed to wait by the door...This kinda set the tone for the service aspect of the restaurant. The servers were incredibly friendly, but I found the timing to be a bit off and the rhythm never really landed...we were waiting for our server often. The food was delicious! We started with the hand pie, chips and Speck, and poutine. All were incredibly flavorful, savory, and cooked wonderfully. The hand pie was the star for me...just a perfect package of umami goodness! The gravy on the poutine was delectable and they didn't skimp on the cheese! The fried gnocchi was a fun spin on the classic dish! Might have just been what we ordered, but I thought the whole meal was very salt-forward, which I appreciated but could see where others might not. Lastly, we had the famous Double Cheeseburger. Now, I'm hesitant to agree with others that it's the BEST burger in the Cities, but it is very good. No shortage of classic supporting characters: oozy gooey cheese, caramelized onions, and pickles. Definitely an "eat with fork and knife" style burger! Overall, a great spot for soul-filling comfort food! I'd been wanting to check this place out for a long time and was excited to find an open reservation on a Saturday evening! It's a quaint old home with just a handful of tables and very cozy with great classic decor. Our server was wonderful, kind and knowledgeable. The menu is unique and limited. Our server recommended the Beef tartar and Lengua = cow tongue!! I wasn't brave enough to try either. We shared the Brussels sprouts and French friends for appetizers - both good! I ordered the scallops for dinner, they were just okay. Maybe I should have taken the servers recommendations? My husband ordered the ribeye and it was DELICIOUS - packed with flavor. My son ordered the cheeseburger and said it was the best one he'd ever eaten! (And he's had a LOT of burgers) He said it just melts in your mouth. My youngest son asked if they had a kids menu. Really delicious food here. Feels upscale and sophisticated. Came with a group of 4 and sat outside on a very hot and sticky day. Waitress was able to match energy with everyone at the table, even my dad and his dad jokes, which is always a plus! Every dish was so delicious with well balanced delicate flavors and tender high quality ingredients. I got the poutine and it was out of this world. Yum. My favorite was the gnocchi though, the creamy sauce and lemon mascarpone were immaculate with the pillowy gnocchi and mushrooms/asparagus! The pastry had perfect crisp flaky texture and the savory and salty mix of the cheese and demi glaze were delectable. Next we had mussels which were also amazing. The white wine broth was seasoned beautifully and soaking it up with the accompanying crusty bread was divine. For our main we shared the gnocchi with mushrooms and asparagus. The sauce was the perfect mix of creamy, lemony, and salty. The textures and tastes were simply perfect. We didn't save room for dessert but got the piña colada sorbet anyway. The sorbet was delicious but the toasted coconut is what made the dish our fourth 10/10. The service was kind, quick, and courteous. The ambience was close and talkative but cute. Such a cute place that's hidden with minimal signs right by st Thomas. I've been seeing people post about their smash burger and it definitely didn't disappoint. I wouldn't put it as one of my favorites as far as smash burgers goes but it had me feeling satisfied and full when leaving. Prepare for a mess if you order one - gooey saucey and greasy! The bun on the bottom will be soaked in all things involved. The fires are 10/10 Prosciutto and chips really surprised me - I've never had this combo and loved it! What a great little spot! And when I say little, I mean it's a tiny restaurant, located on the ground floor of an apartment building. But they cram people into this space and certainly make it work. Great service, very friendly and knowledgeable on their menu and drinks. They have a full bar, and a small wine selection. But the food was what it was all about! The burger and fries were amazing! Went to GusGus for dinner tonight with my husband. It was our first visit, and we both left really impressed. The space is small, dimly lit, and has a cozy, intimate vibe. Service was excellent from start to finish. I started with the Birds Aren't Real cocktail, which was strong in the best way and really well-balanced. My husband ordered the Old Fashioned and noted he was pleasantly surprised by the size and enjoyed it overall. For appetizers, we chose the Beef Tartare and the Grilled Prawns. Both were standouts. My husband normally doesn't care for tartare, but even he liked this one -- packed with flavor and served on incredibly good bread. The prawns ended up being our favorite dish of the night. They were perfectly grilled and paired with a Malta sauce that was absolutely fantastic. For my entrée, I ordered the Scallops with Lemon Risotto. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but the risotto leaned a bit too lemon-forward and slightly overpowered the dish. Still, I enjoyed it. My husband went with the Rib-Eye and Brussels Sprouts. The steak had great seasoning but was a little tough. The Brussels sprouts, on the other hand, were outstanding -- full of flavor with a mix of mild heat, tanginess, and saltiness. The fish sauce added a really nice depth. Overall, we both felt the appetizers and sides stole the show, but the entrées were still very good. We wrapped up dinner with the When Doves Cry cocktail, which we both loved -- even more than our first drinks. We'll definitely be back. Next time we're eyeing the Taleggio Hand Pie, the Mussels, and I'll probably give the Gnocchi a try as well. GusGus is absolutely worth returning to. read more

We tried it out for the first time a couple months ago and we came back again, which we hardly ever do since we like to try new restaurants. GusGus has been on my list for sometime now and it lived up the hype I was hearing. It's a small cozy spot that seriously feels like you're having dinner at your best friend's house. The lighting was dim and my friend and I were literally cracking up because she couldn't read the menu without her phone flashlight on full blast, haha! The decor is super cute. The menu has a variety of options, but we both had our hearts set on the burger. Hands down one of the best burgers I've had since Saint Dinette. SO cheesy, juicy, and packed with flavor. The french fries were cooked to perfection: crispy, salty, and completely addictive. I really wanted to take down my entire burger and fries because it was so scrumptious but I had to tap out halfway and take the rest to go as I was too full. I'm a huge chocolate lover and kept seeing the chocolate cake coming out to tables (it's like I was being tested or something, lol), so I just had to get a slice to go. I'm happy to report no regrets with my decision, but I was bummed my to go slice was noticeably smaller than the ones coming out in the restaurant. Service was fair, nothing bad, nothing standout. The meat was cooked to perfection, the only problem is that the bun was too much, we actually needed to take some of it off because it over powered the actual burger. We got the scallops as well but ended up sending those back because they were salty. She took them back and did not charge us so that made sense. We also got the chimichurri steak.. oh lalala! I'm surprised I haven't written a review as I've been here quite a few times and tried a lot of their menu at different points throughout the year. The service is always excellent and tentative. It is a small but cute spot, but doesn't feel crowded. Just very intimate. The drinks are always so well prepared. It's insane how well they balance all the flavors. Everything on the menu is pretty breathtaking to be honest. On this last occasion, we had some gnocchi that is out of this world. But I've never had a single bad thing on their menu. This is a great little date spot. I would say I wouldn't bring a big group in here, but if you wanted to impress someone's special, this would be the spot. read more
