Pretty tasty spot. Nothing to complain about, but nothing that pulls me back either. Certainly the best Asian bakery I've tried in Brooklyn.

Buzzy ambiance, excellent food, attentive service. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu, in my opinion. This is the best Taiwanese restaurant in New York, but the owners are confused about the heritage and cultural identity of the restaurant. The food here is great. I love the lu rou fan, beef roll, zhajiangmian, and pretty much everything on the menu. It is the only place I know of that serves stinky tofu within 30 mins of Manhattan. In fact, it's one of three full service Taiwanese restaurants around Manhattan. The cocktails are an exciting fusion of Asian herbs and western liquor. The decor here is modern Scandinavian crossed with Brooklyn hipster. What's missing is a feeling of Taiwan. Food is a HUGE part of Asian culture and it is very evident in Taiwanese daily life. From the night markets to the 7-Elevens, there is amazing food on every street corner and every block. Sadly, the only connection to Taiwan is the Chinese characters on the cans of Taiwan Beer. The restaurant opted to dumb down Taiwanese culture to make American diners comfortable instead of creating a dialog. The menu is completely in English with no Chinese while a lot of meaning is lost in the translation. What in the world is a "nutritious sandwich"? The waiters and waitresses completely butchered the pronunciation of "zhajiangmian" and warned me that the sticky tofu is stinky. (Yeah no shit, that's why I want it). Am I supposed to pronounce the Chinese "lu rou fan" with an American accent so the wait staff can understand my order too? Dear white people: When the Asians at the table next to you order stinky tofu, please do make a disgusted face and add a snarky comment about how strange it smells. I've been here three times and it slowly gets worse and worse every time. The food is delicious which is why I keep coming back, but the customer service is severely lacking. The hostess is not friendly whatsoever. Acted like I ruined her day when I asked for a table. The worst was my server. Short blonde haired girl. Came to the table 10 minutes after we were seated and said "what do you want?" There was no "how are you" "have you been here before" "Can I start you with something to drink". Super unfriendly. Never came back to our table to check on us or ask if we wanted another round of drinks, which we would have if she had been more attentive. It's a shame because I really like the food, but I just can't get over the rude customer service. read more

My husband and I order from here quite frequently. Always looking for some good tawainese home-cooked meal, we were content with their lu rou fan and the spicy sesame noodles (no meat). Lu rou fan is super rich and just melts in your mouth and comes with a consistently well-cooked soft egg. The spicy noodle was a huge surprise because the noodles are cooked perfectly (al dente with a slight chew but still soft) and are mixed in this flavorful sauce. You dont miss any meat while eating the noodles because of the generous portion of hearty mushrooms. We've already recommended this place to a handful of friends and they love it as well. I'm so sad It is never easy to find a Taiwanese restaurant with this many good reviews. I went in there with such excitement but came out with unimaginable disappointment. The most popular dish Lu Rou Fan tasted like salted minced pork. But if you have ever tasted any authentic Lu Rou Fan, it should be prepared with a very specific type of pork such as pork belly with skin, not minced pork. The messy bao was all peanuts and not much pork for $20+ ?! The salad was the only decent dish if it was not soaked in a lake of salt! Yes I think the only good thing was that the salt was definitely free because every dish we ordered was so salty. Every dish was way over priced. But remember, you get unlimited salt Also to be fair, the service was good. read more

I've eaten here a dozen times. I remember when it first opened back in 2016. You can see my initial gushing of the place by scrolling through my Instagram. I raved about this place to everyone I met, I still don't know what's better... the Big Chicken Bun here or the Nashville Hot Chicken at Peaches Hot House in Bed-Stuy. I've brought over a dozen friends here. For my birthday week where I dined out with a different group every night, this was one of the stops. But my experience tonight changes that all and honestly I expected better from Trigg and Josh' FOH team. I came here tonight at 8:15pm and put my name in for a table for two. Keep in mind, I clock 3 empty table for two inside and outside were 4 empty tables so we're working with 14 empty seats not including the round but that's 5+ top and obviously going to be for a reservation. I get told the wait is an hour, hooookay fine, I'm hoping everyone before me decides to call it quits so it'll end up being shorter. I'm familiar with this game of dining chicken in the city. I notice the 4 tables outside after 20 minutes are still not filled which I think is odd. After 40 minutes I walk in (the tables are still empty, and there's still a small crowd outside) and ask what the ETA is. I get told another fucking 45 minutes. So now you want me to wait 1.5hrs to get seated at a two top when there are 4 empty tables outside? Fuck that shit. It's not like those are being reserved for a large party because two aren't even next each other. I have the receipts, see the pictures below and they've been empty for the last 40 minutes. Seriously, the last 40 minutes. Here I am trying to throw money at you and order half the menu and I can't even do that. I'm being serious too, I'm like a garbage disposal--I once went to Dishoom 3 days in a row while I was in London and worked my way through the whole menu and the waitstaff knew who I was. The hostess the whole time acted as if she deigned to be there. I'm sorry, that's your job. If you don't want to be hostess, don't. I'll be going to Flushing for my Taiwanese needs in the future. One of my favorite meals in NYC to date. None of that fusion asian food that's not as good as the originals it allegedly fuses. No. This is ELEVATED asian food. I'm generally more of a mainland china over taiwanese food type person because I find taiwanese food on the sweet/bland side, but these dishes were packed full of flavor. We got nearly everything on the brunch menu (which I heard is similar to their dinner menu) and here it is in order of best to not-bad-but-could-skip: Clams with scallion pancake: so saucy and delicious! The scallion pancakes were also unique and tasty. Sloppy baos: just so juicy and flavorful. Amazing. Lu rou fan: taiwanese staple. Done very well here! Dandan mian with mushroom: noodles were a bit thin for my taste, but the sauce and the mushrooms were oh so tasty! Oyster pancake: nice juicy oysters in there with a yummy sauce. Much better than other places I've had it. Fried chicken and waffle: was pretty stuffed already by the time this came around, but the chicken had a good fry on it. I didnt try the waffles, but people around the table said it was so-so. Little meat buns: forgot what these were called on the menu, but juicy and tasty tho not super memorable. Hashbrowns: good but not particularly special. Egg crepe roll up: I didnt really get a good bite other than my bf's half eaten one so can't really comment on it. The flavor didn't impress me enough for me to grab my own piece though. Fried mantou with vanilla ice cream: it's good with a huge pat of icecream. I'm just not a big fan of sweets. Soy milk and chinese donut: very average chinese fare, wouldn't really recommend getting it here. Wow. We really ate through the entire menu. Oh and the jasmine and chrysanthemum teas were fragrant and sweet. Good accompaniments to the meal. Now go stuff yourself with awesome food! read more

Went here tonight with my husband. This is definitely a good spot for big groups as I believe they only take reservations for parties of 5 +. We got there around 7 and the two of us had to wait about 45 minutes for a table. So we went around the corner to duckduck bar. Definitely recommend as a place to drink a couple beers while you wait. We got: Oyster omelette: came with just a few oysters mixed in which were reallly good, and a shockingly good combo. The pork and sauce though really pulled this dish together. If I was in my own home I may have licked the plate. This whole dish was just outstanding. Pan grilled pork buns - kind of like a dumpling but way better. The sauce also amazing. Clams with scallion pancake - sooo good. Lots of basil (if you are a fan, get it) the scallion pancakes I thought were fabulous especially if you dip them into yet again another amazing sauce Lu rou fan: rice mixed with pork belly and other goodness. You won't be disappointed. Food was amazing, so flavorful and unique. Only thing I'll say is that, all of the dishes came out within about 10 minutes of ordering. This spot has a pretty good number of outdoor tables. You have to order at the restaurant and then grab a seat. We got the eggplant, pork buns, sesame noodles, and lamb. Giving 5 stars for the food! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! Note about seating: they didn't let us reserve in advance for dinner. We were a group of 5 and they wouldn't let us sit until everyone from the group has arrived (2 friends were running late). Was a bit stressful because it's first come first-served and we were worried we would lose the table. We told the host we were willing to order everything for the table before those 2 friends come, but they still wouldn't seat us. At the end, it turned out fine and we got the table. Check out the light deckr made from the bottoms and tops of plastic liter bottles. Pretty dope. The menu is not easy, everything described on the menu sounds delectable. But I finally make up my mind to try Zhajianmian. Very tasty yet mild. I loved the mix of crisp cucumbers and the lamb was not too heavy nor was there too much of it. the pieces that were in the bowl was very tender and practically melted in my mouth. This is a dish I wouldn't mind having again. Service was great, welcoming and checked in regularly while maintaining a distance. I'll be back to this place. read more

There aren't very many Taiwanese restaurants in the city, so I was super excited to try Win Son after seeing some familiar dishes. Win Son is definitely a modern/fusion take on Taiwanese food. and for what it is, it's really good! But don't expect traditional Taiwanese, or else you'll be disappointed. Come here with an open and adventurous mind! Prices are a little steep, especially if you're used to cheap lu rou fan and beef rolls/pancakes. But each dish has a twist on it that I think makes it worth the price (give or take..) The dishes aren't really that small by any means, and we definitely over-ordered for the 4 of us. - Sweet soy milk with you tiao: a classic and a favorite! the soy milk was warm and sweet. and the you tiao wasn't too oily, which I appreciate - Beef roll: very big portion, comes with 6 pieces! the sauce was a littttle too buttery for me. this dish came at the end, so we were REALLY stuffed - Hashbrown with egg: bombb flavors! We loved the tofu mayo, but also a little heavy. The hashbrown was so crunchy and delicious, but this is best split between 4 people - Lu rou fan: a favorite among everyone at the table! This is definitely a fancier version of the simple traditional one. The sauce was thicker than I've had before, but good nonetheless. Visiting a friend in the area who really wanted to try this place, and I have to say I was impressed. They have a romantic/ more intimate atmosphere that isn't stuffy but is also very light and relaxed. Apparently this place is poppin, and we were so lucky to grab a table when we did. The food was very tasty, and even though I loaded mine up with chili oil. (Sorry, I love spicy!) I do wish they had some more spicy options on the menu, but I truly might have over-looked them. All the food came with a brown paper bag with take out boxes inside. The Lu Rou fan is not too bad, the meat is mostly fat, which I like. I didn't really eat much because it was really hot that day, I think it's not bad but definitely not the best Lu rou fan I've had. The cucumber is okay, nothing special. I like the Taiwanese beer, I'm not a beer drinker and I normally don't drink beer. But I ended up finishing because it was pretty light plus the heat Win Son has a bakery across the street, would love to try it but they close between 2pm - 5pm. The Best Fried Chicken Sandwich I've had in the city. The fried chicken is undoubtedly Taiwanese with the Salt and Pepper and spices. Extra crispy, herby, juicy, and garnished with scallions and cilantro. AND it's sandwiched between a Bo Lo Bao (a sweet topping bun). Creamy fermented tofu mayo on the side. I found myself eating and picking at the crumbs with my fingers. However, at 14 dollars, it'd be nice if there was a small side that came with it (maybe potatoes with chili oil?). Had to get the Teresa Teng cocktail. Tasted like bubblegum. Was thinking of that one joint she had with the chinese flute repeating throughout. Guohua Street Salad was very tangy but the softer sweetness of the mango evened it out. It was definitely generous with the smoked tofu shreds - which I loved as appetizer salads usually don't have that much protein. AND there was shrimp, too. Very balanced flavors there. Sesame noodles wasn't polluted with oil or overpowered by anything. The chili oil wasn't overwhelming like most places but also kept its flavor. Noodles on the firm side. Think it was some kind of black bean sauce on the side of the bowl - but it was a good base to mix with the acidity of the chili oil. Hip-Hop soundtrack (not old school when I was there). Noticed the waitress didn't bring the check until after the dessert - not with the dessert so we didn't feel rushed to get out. They text you when your table's ready so you're not confined to waiting right outside the restaurant. I like the little things like that. The wait was over 1 hour, even though they had more than 3 empty tables. Last Taiwanese place I got to try in NYC - will have to plan another trip to experience the other hotspots like 886, Wenwen, New Fu Shen, Taiwan Bear House, etc. Win Son's "take" on the traditional dish of Lu rou fan (minced pork over rice) was very good, especially the soft-boiled soy egg included with it. Their scallion pancakes were also great, and accompanied with a different type of chili sauce served by Ho Foods. Beverages you can order also include iced Jasmine Tea sweetened every so slightly (very good), Taiwanese Apple Sidra, Taiwan Beer, Kombucha, Sarsparilla, and Sanzo Lychee & Calamansi Sparkling Water products. Finally, I believe their only dessert item - the Tian miantuan (fried sweet dough, golden sesame ice cream and sweetened condensed milk with butter dried peanuts & cilantro able to be added for $2 extra) was excellent and rightly deserves to occupy that throne on their menu. If you are looking for an authentic Taiwanese restaurant, this is not a place for you. BTW-My friends and I are all born and raised in Taiwan. If you are going on a Friday night, go early. We had 4 people and arrived around 7:20 and waited about 1.5 hour for our table! Snow peas shoots - fresh but a bit too salty stinky tofu - not crispy enough on the outside and not juicy enough. The sauce is not right either and the dish missed the pickled cabbage! Turnips cake - the worst I've ever had. It was over cooked and burnt. And you don't taste the turnips in the cake. Egg bomb (with wagyu beef tartare) - the scallion pancake wrap was good and I actually like the wagyu beef with it. Although my friends don't quite like it Flies head - no no no the flavor is wrong. It was too sweet and I didn't taste the fermented black beans. And it wasn't spicy!!??? The dish should be spicy that makes you sweat! Beef roll - the pancake was too soft but the beef was quite good Lou Ro Fan - essentially it's braised pork over rice. The braised pork was pretty good but the rice was too soft and wet. Zhaijing noodle - not my favorite either. Too sweet to my taste. They do offer quite interesting cocktails and even have the 58 degree Kaoliang. I like the idea of promoting Taiwanese food, but I personally can't say that I like the food here. read more

There are so many good things to say about Win Son, but let's start with the appetizers. The pork buns are like small tasty pockets loaded with meat and seasonings. The scallion pancake is also a good app option. It's kinda like a Taiwanese quesadilla, only $5 for a decent amount, and I could swim in that dipping sauce. You also can't go wrong with the fried eggplant - who knew you could make such an unexciting vegetable so flavorful and delicious?! The drinks are on the expensive side, but I went with the Taiwanese beer. It was so refreshing in the summer heat with hints of honey and lemon. The star of the show, however, are the sesame noodles. The flavors are incredible - nutty, savory, amazing, and you won't be able to stop eating them. I also want to give a shout out to their great customer service. There was an issue with our chopsticks and a woman who wasn't even our server (maybe she was a manager?) apologized, fixed the issue, AND brought out the crispy eggplant appetizer on the house! A very thoughtful gesture and an A+ customer service move. So glad Win Son is nearby because I hope to become a regular. read more
