Very solid Taiwanese bakery but didn't quite live up to the hype. Everything was alright and nothing blew me away. First, this place is busy!! If coming around standard brunch times on the weekend, be prepared to wait 10-15 minutes in line and another 15-25 minutes for your food to come out. There's also *another* line after you order to get seated haha. We opted to sit outside to skip that second line; my friend's matcha came out in just a few minutes but my soy milk didn't get brought out until 20+ minutes later. Everything else (napkins, utensils, water, to go boxes) is self serve. The fan tuan was very tasty but extremely small, less than half the size of the fan tuan I've gotten anywhere else. While the sticky rice is perfectly cooked and I liked the egg inside, it was so small you could eat this in 4 big bites haha. Nowhere close to the almost-burrito size I'm used to. The soy milk and crispy donut were also tasty, but the donut was on the drier, crispier side, which meant it couldn't soak up the soy milk well. The scallion BEC, which I was most excited for (I am a FIEND for scallion pancake), was unfortunately a miss. It wasn't flakey or crispy at all, very dense and oily, and no scallion flavor came through. I've seen this place on social media and was curious to see what the hype was about. This Taiwanese fusion bakery is very unique with a wide selection of both savory items and baked goods. We got their Scallion Pancake BEC and Custard Toast. The Scallion Pancake BEC was decent, and the sauce prof used on the side was good, but I just prefer traditional Taiwanese food. The cheese was just very heavy for me, overpowering the scallion pancake. The Custard Toast was disappointing. It was a lot of bread with a thin layer of sweet caramelized custard on top. Thrilled to have an outpost of Win Son in Manhattan. I enjoyed the flawlessly stuffed fan tuan (rivaling memories of street food breakfast on my visits to Taiwan). I especially appreciated how the filling was evenly distributed throughout the entirety of the rice wad. Too often, you end up with huge chunks at either end that are only rice--that wasn't the case with Win Son's rendition. The true pièce de résistance here is the bec scallion pancake. To me, this is the apex of east-meets-west city breakfast. Combining two of my fave methods of greasing my gullet first thing in the morning into a singularly flawless mashup is pure insanity (read: genius). Note: if you plan to dine in, it seems that the ideal arrival time is pre-10:00am. Seemingly immediately as our clocks hit that dreaded hour, the queue was out the door. Win-Son has been on my list for what feels like a decade, the weight sitting in my to do's, and I was left feeling like it was just okay. I need to go back and try more things to really determine. Ordered: Scallion pancake BEC - 4/5 Honestly? And this might be a bad thing but I'm comparing it to two things: Thai Diner's BEC and just the overall hype to reality ratio. I think I was just slightly underwhelmed. I wasn't getting a whole lot of flavors and the sauce to accompany it kinda threw me off. Versus the other one I've had was very flavorful and a good amount of kick to it but we're comparing two different style of asian cuisines here so its not super fair. For the price, however, I'm not sure its justified? I'd be interested to try the shrimp one or other flavors but its just good to try to classic in order to have a good base. Service: 4/5 - Nothing to really complain about but nothing outstanding either. It did take quite a bit of time to come out but this place was also quite crowded. Vibe 5/5 - Its huge (by comparison to other bakeries) and has a bathroom so that's always a plus. You'll probably have a good chance of finding a seat if people aren't slow to move. This was my 2nd time coming to Winson Bakery because the menu surprised me the first time. They're taking Taiwanese American to another level. When I first came, I got this same exact order. The chopped cheese scallion pancake with a side of the fries. And it hit both times. The interior is ambient. The light is dim and it feels intimate. Also, the tables are small. The concept is mind blowing for me. It's messy, but I love the unique take on a New York staple. The scallion pancake already has an interesting texture and dough, so pairing that with the chopped cheese intrigues me lol. Honestly I don't think the filling taste like a chopped cheese at all but it's really good and filling. I felt like it gave off a cheesesteak more than a chopped cheese. Especially with the mix of vegetables. One flaw is that it looks like a burrito but you can't really hold it because it collapses as you take each bite. Both times I've had this dish I had to use fork and knife. Then I had the fries. I don't know what seasoning they use but it's a blend of salt and spices. I get tired of regular salty fries so that extra kick of spice does the job for me. One of my friends ordered the salad and I wish I ordered that instead of the fries. Beautiful little cafe with plenty of seating inside and out. The dishes seemed authentic so I was excited to try the Taiwanese dishes. It's more of a fusion Taiwanese with random combinations that do sound good but not super Taiwanese. Scallion pancake was not impressive, think and flat. It looked like frozen. Same with the crullers (you tiao). They came with the soy milk, and honestly tasted kind of stale and refried. Soy milk was a little burnt and pulpy. The hot sweetened soy milk was also kind of frothy, which we didn't love. Fan tuan was ok, kind of small. The pork floss inside was good. Chicken sandwich was good and milk bun fluffy. The bian dang was pretty good too, a nice portion with egg and veggies. I would have expected a place that claims to be Taiwanese to have at least one board or poster with a Chinese menu. ((4.25 stars)) Win Son Bakery is a Taiwanese-American cafe in the East Village. it serves a variety of small & large savory dishes, sweet baked & dessert-y items, a coffee / tea menu, and adult beverages (beer & wine) from morning to evening. the location is a good-sized space for Manhattan with additional sidewalk seats during warmer weather. the interior is bright and clean with modern vibes. the coffee program is pretty solid and i've enjoyed iced americanos and drip coffees here. recently,had the BEC Scallion Pancake. it's made up of bacon + eggs + havarti cheese wrapped up in a soft scallion pankcake. the sandwich is unsurprisingly rich because of the bacon, eggs, melty havarti cheese, and scallion pancake. the bacon is fairly firm and crispy with some chew; the eggs are kind of compressed but are still soft; the havarti is a creamy with a little bit of tanginess and sweetness; and the scallion pancakes are pretty soft without the typical expected crispy exterior. the sandwich is rich, but errs on the oily side because of the scallion pancakes and the other ingredients. the flavors are savory and comforting but they all kinda get lost in each other because they are all competing with one another and get somewhat muted. the sandwich does come with a "ginger deluxe dipping sauce" which is essentially an aioli sauce. the sauce is a nice touch, but i do wish the sandwich got a some refining so the flavors come together into a more memorable bite that reflects more Taiwanese flavors than just a take on a classic bacon-egg-and-cheese. while the BEC scallion pancake isn't a huge sandwich--it is very shareable and i recommend splitting it with someone, so you can order some things off the menu that are a bit more Taiwanese in flavor and conception like the fa tuan or the turnip cake OR any of the excellent pastries like the millet mochi doughnut, vanilla cream bun, or the chocolate bao bolo. the service is friendly and upbeat. there are definitely lines on the weekend, so heading to Win Son Bakery is a better bet during the week and will be less crowded. Was so glad that this location opened in Manhattan. The cleanly decorated quick service spot has lots to offer. Since the last time I had tried a pop up with mostly pastries, I opted to try the BEC scallion pancake and a matcha (almond milk). The matcha was very smooth. The BEC SP is a very large portion. They took traditional Asian food one get at Dim Sum and put a twist on it. We got Scallions Pancakes. It is more like a pancake sandwich. To me it loses the scallion taste. It becomes a doughy sandwich that will fill you up. The best for us is the pork fan tuan. It is the meat floss from when I was young eating with congee while sick. Add in a crunchy piece in the middle and a gooey egg. The worst is the rice noodles. It is chunky rice noodles but really oily. Maybe it is the take out container causing that effect but not something I would get again. In between is the tian doujiang with youtiao. Nicely flavor soy milk and crispy fried dough. There only thing actually good was the San Bei Ji Chopped Cheese. Even the fries that came with it were mediocre. I will probably not be revisiting these guys again. I've avoided Win Son's bread house off-shoots ever since my lackluster brunch experience at the original BK restaurant years ago. But cue one warm summer night. We were in the area and craving glucose, and if you know this area, you know quality dessert spots aren't exactly in abundance. The Chocolate Bolo Bao won't impress my Taiwanese relatives, but it'll at least get an A for effort (and in Asian culture, ANY A is cause for celebration). We ordered the Egg and Cheese Scallion Pancake, a Pork Fan Tuan, and a Matcha Latte with oat milk. The egg and cheese scallion pancake was a bit underwhelming. It came with a tangy dipping sauce, though I didn't feel the tang really complemented the egg and cheese as well compared to some other alternatives they could have tried. The filling itself could have used more balance, the cheese was concentrated at the beginning of the scallion pancake and wasn't evenly distributed, leaving the rest of the bite a little flat in flavor. The matcha latte was also not my favorite, it lacked the concentrated, earthy matcha flavor I'm used to, and came across a bit diluted. The Pork Fan Tuan, however, was the star of the show. This rice roll was filled with pork floss and had a crispy, crunchy middle (possibly their version of a chicharrón?). I've been hearing about Win Son and do think you should come test it out yourself before making any judgements about it. They have unique items you wouldn't get at other places (ex. Fan Tuan rice roll, five spice latte) and their seating system is quite efficient (you order and than join a queue for a seat which goes by pretty quickly). I think the hype of watching them online made me expect the food to be life changing and while it was good, I'm not sure how William I am to go out of my way for it. There were lots of people seating inside and outside so I can tell it was one of the more popular brunch spots. The service was standard. The scallion BEC is honestly a skip. It's just not that good. I tasted 0 scallion pancake. Also it's just so salty and oily. Maybe if I had a more tangy sauce. The mochi donut was good but nothing insane. It was just a sugar donut with good fried flavor and texture. Maybe if there was a diff flavor. Lastly I got the black sesame latte and it wasn't bad. I loved everything I've tried at Win Son Bakery. It is usually busy on a weekend, but the line goes fast to order. After you order, there's also usually a wait to get a table as well. This is everything we got, ranked in order from favorite to least favorite. -Pork bian dang: The pork was so flavorful and tender, the rice soaked up the sauce, and the egg was perfectly jammy. Every bite of this was delicious, and you can choose between two different types of side salads. One of my favorite things I've eaten recently. -Shrimp milk bun: The shrimp burger was nice and thick, and the milk bun was soft and complimented the shrimp well. The sauce in this burger was delicious too. It is quite messy to eat though. -Rice noodles: These were a fun dish to try. The noodles are like thin rice noodles that are rolled into nugget sized noodles. They're supple and chewy and packed with flavor. -Pinenut sun cake: I love sun cakes and felt like a classic Taiwanese sun cake is better than this. It had a nice caramelization. It reminded me more of a butterfly cookie. I would probably try some other pastry next time. The cashier said his favorite are the bolo buns which looked good! Bacon egg and cheese scallion pancake- THE BEST (must get); godly with the house special sauce 2. San beiji chopped cheese scallion pancake- also very good, more oily and meaty than the BEC, but very flavorful Mid Items: 1. Rou Bao- decent but nothing special 2. Came here on a weekend afternoon looking for a pre-dinner snack. Space is pretty big and there's also outdoor seating. No laptops allowed policy though based on some signs. At any rate, got the veggie fan tuan and jiu cai scallion pancake. The veggie fan tuan I thought was pretty underwhelming. I do think you miss something from swapping out the pork floss for the tofu, but also I was hoping for a bit more crunch. The scallion pancake was good. And the havarti cheese was nice. The order came with a mayo-based sauce which was nice. Wasn't sure which order the sauce came with, but I'll say I was really wishing there was chili oil provided with our order. I've had a dish with chili oil at their Brooklyn location and it was delicious. Also order came out to be $20 or so ($25 with tip which after thinking about how everything is self-service here I kind of regret) which felt pretty steep, but I guess the area rent can't be cheap. All-in-all, friendly staff, good seating, and solid food options. Lil on the pricey side, but I'd recommend it if you're craving a snack or a quick drink looking to catch up with a friend or a casual meal. I came here on a Saturday afternoon to get a quick lunch and was happy to see that the line wasn't too bad. The place offers great natural lighting with the windows drawn up. I was able to place my order within 15 minutes upon arrival, and food took no longer than 15 mins to come out either. The food was quite delicious. We got the sanbeiji chopped cheese, shrimp turnip cake, bolo bao, and the 5 spice latte just to try out a bit of everything. It's nothing mind-blowing, but I had a great time munching through everything. The 5 spice latte was the most memorable to me. It tastes exactly like what you think it would taste like, maybe a little sweeter. I would get it again (lol) read more
