All I know is that the last few weekends that I've walked by here, I've seen a line down the block. So to my surprise, there was no line today. I walked in and was the next in line. There's two self service ordering kiosks and then you wait for your food on the side. So this is where I'm going to say, yes there's hype behind the place, but the line is also a bit manufactured. A) people don't get to see the full menu until they're in front of the screens ordering. This creates additional wait time because people are naturally indecisive. B) The bread isn't slow. It's the drinks. They gave an assembly line for the matcha drinks but the barista is not in any hurry to finish your order. C) This leads to the third point where as I got to the ordering tablets, they shut down the second one and forced everyone to order from one. Because the barista could not keep up with the orders. I ordered the salt bread with the original sweet cream dip and the uji matcha dip. I also ordered their signature uji matcha drink. My bread order was ready in 5 minutes. My drink order took another 10-15 minutes. During this time the line started to build outside because there's only one ordering tablet now. I took my order to go but it looks like there was plenty of seating in the back. There's also free water on the side if you wanted it. The place was a bit warm but it has a bakery after all. So what's my verdict? The bread is actually delicious. I could easily polish off all three in one sitting. They're fluffy and the salt gives it a great crunch. The sweet cream makes it taste like a dessert and the matcha cream was also delicious. The matcha drink however was nothing special. It's a decent matcha but not worth the 15 minutes wait. Would have never thought I'd travel for what's essentially a fancy dinner roll (why does salt bread look like those frozen twist tin Pillsbury rolls/twists from my childhood?), but this Shio Pan is Nothing close to it - I can see why they're popular. The restaurant is about a 5 minute walk from the Broadway-Lafayette subway station, or take the M103 conveniently down the east side. I forget how Absolutely Calm & Quaint! this side of the East Village-Alphabet City-Lower East Side area is. Although there's been a lot of gentrification, the small streets & townhouses still have that sense of character & history. I think Justin's Salt Bread & it's thoughtful space & brand fits in perfectly in what the neighborhood(s) offer. I got there around 12pm on a Friday, there was no line! The restaurant/cafe was busy - all of the tatami stations & most of the wrap around back bench were filled, but it didn't feel crowded or tight. Service was super quick & the staff seemed happy, joking around, while diligently at work. The bakers from the back were going in & out from the kitchen, all with smiles. What a breath of fresh air! The space is a kind of modern-rustic white, in the most korean (or is it originally Japanese?) - influenced way. All the (looks like, or made-to-look) thrifted sidebars, benches, coat racks made from thick old pipes on wheels, & antique mirrors - with books such as "Salt" displayed. AND a slim water dispenser, garbage for Both items & liquids! There's little small "tables" (kind of like raised yoga block-sized) for your drinks & food & the far back seating area has a sky light. One suggestion would be including the food & food pricing on the wall menu. Right now there's only the specialty drinks on the wall. The only menu available is on the ordering kiosk. Bonus points for the shelf (for purses/bags) underneath the screen though! I got the 3-bread pack for about $14.00. One Shio Pan is $4.50. Dipping creams were $1.50 each & drinks ranged from $6-9. I wanted to taste the product as is & wasn't sure if I'd like mixing a sweet cold foam with something savory. (Tip: bring the pan to H-yTea & get their special pistachio foam jasmine tea) if the bread was salty, I wasn't sure if salted cold from would be too much. The bottom is lightly strongly crispy (hello ASMR), the top is soft & sprinkled with a little coarse salt. The bottom was "glistening" - either from the caramelized salt or sugar, mixed with butter. It wasn't unhealthily greasy - however if you're watching your cholesterol or salt intake, this product might not be for you (ie. similar to buttery baked goods in general). The portion is a good breakfast size. At first I thought slightly small, but it's actually just enough. I didn't get thirsty from the salt until I finished. The staff said that the pan can be stored in the refrigerator overnight and reheated in the microwave with a small cup of water. (am guessing also a quick toast) They haven't tried freezing them though. UPDATE: Freezing 1 didn't work so well. Let it defrost on the counter & ate it at room temp. Unfortunately the bread was a bit chewy once defrosted (still tasty). I didn't want to add any heat to it because of the texture. While there are workers behind the counter, they're busy preparing + packing orders, so you order on a kiosk. They call out your name when it's ready, so listen carefully as they don't have a PA system + there's lots of background chatter. Unexpectedly large space, mostly because it stretches so deep. While I appreciate the inclusion of some traditional elements, it's not the most efficient use of space--large circular tables + even more imposing tatami mats. They try to make up for it with benches lining the back walls. Also, apparently, this is the Japanese version of salt bread. I don't know how that differs from the Korean version. Bread worth its salt but definitely sprinkled with some hype. The salt bread is the star for good reason and has the signature butter crust on the bottom which is essential. Be weary of slow periods when the bread has been sitting out - fresh bread is peak. The salt drinks are questionable - we tried all 3 options and the salt is over the top. I can enjoy salted cream top lattes but they use electric grinders and salt the lattes like salting a steak. YMMV but you might want to opt for non-salt options since the bread is already salted. read more

I was sosososo excited to try this as salt bread is probably my favorite of all breads. After trying salt bread in Korea I literally became obsessed and was so sad to find out there was absolutely 0 places in NYC the food hub of the nation that sold even slightly comparable salt bread. Before Justin's I had only had salt bread from TLJ/Paris baguette and both of those were shells of what I had tried in Korea. Literally not the same thing at all. Justin's was GOOOOOOD tho. At the very minimum it was super buttery and soft. honestly, could be more flaky / crunchy on the bottom. But it was Very fresh and warm and super buttery and soft in the middle. The cream is superrrrr light and very faint matcha flavoring but it was good bc it was so light. Idk how well it pairs with the bread tho. I also feel like the bread maybe could've been slightly more salty. Service was so fast tho, breads came out almost instantly. No line at 11 am on a Friday. Interior is super cute and honestly a decent amount of seating. Didn't get to try their coffees. But would also love to see other flavors of salt bread in the future maybe. I was originally worried that this would just be another overhyped social media spot, but I was glad to be wrong! I love good bread and this was spot on for me. The texture of the salt bread was nice and flaky and also hefty. The amount of salt was great too although the bread itself is quite oily. I do wish they had some plates for dine in; would definitely grab a few napkins! I got the original sweet cream and the matcha one and both were delicious and light; not too sweet either. It can get quite pricey and that would be the only thing preventing me from returning often, but it is a nice treat every now and then. read more

Omg I wish I could have this every day! I was hesitant that the bread wouldn't live up to the hype but wow was I wrong. Soft, warm, and the mix between the salt and the sweet dippable cream is to die for. The matcha was also very authentic with the cream top being a cherry on top. Have been seeing salt bread start to trend from Korea and was super curious seeing it make its way to the city so had to give it a try! The space is super cute and they had many different flavors of salt bread. We got some of the originals and matcha cream. I think the cream could be skipped but is a nice addition if you want a dip! The salt bread itself was pretty good! It's a nice soft bread, great warmed up, that's buttery on the inside. Comparable to a breadstick/croissant combination. This cute little spot serves up some tasty fresh baked bread with sides of dipping creams . You can order up a delicious salted matcha service was pretty quick given how busy they were . The line was pretty long when we got there but moved fairly quick . The breads were so good especially when they are fresh out of the oven . So good !
