Love exploring the bakery scene in NYC, and my friend and I just knew we had to come to Papa d'Amour! I'd actually discovered it watching an episode of Korean Englishmen on YouTube, so shoutout to them. When we got there, the workers were all very sweet and helpful, and luckily we found seating inside because they were very packed (typical for a Sunday morning, I assume) Spent a minute just admiring all the pastries on display - I just adore how their recipes marry the classic French pastries with East Asian flavors in such a creative and delectable way. Anyways, we tried a couple different pastries: Salt bread bagel with cheese spread (4/5): to say I love salt bread is lowkey an understatement, but regardless, this bagel was essentially just a very classic salt bread, very soft and like that of a cloud, airy and clean-tasting. Worked well with the cheese but it's just so good on its own as well. Apple, asian pear & red bean chausson (4.5/5): I was on a rollercoaster with this one. First off, the name instantly piqued my interest because the flavor profile seemed so versatile and harmonious, and then when I tried it, all three (apple, asian pear, red bean) were very much present but also with this almost Asian herbal aftertaste? But, it kinda grew on me and the apple/pear compote especially was just so addicting (I paired it with the cream cheese from the salt bread bagel, which actually worked so well together). This pastry very much gives a sense of autumn with its flavors, and omg the flakiness of the brioche was flawless. Most importantly, it was not TOO sweet, genuinely the perfect amount of sweet for me. Like, this is my new standard of sweetness for pastries. Banana bread malay cake (4.5/5): personally I found the banana to taste and feel more like a plantain, but the sponge was delightful, and I love all things banana bread, so you can't go wrong with this one. There's still so much I want to try, especially the scallion basil blossom (and the name itself is so beautiful), so maybe for next time...

Stopped in on a weekday and it was busy but my friend and I were able to grab seats. Taro mochi donut was excellent, but my favorite was actually the scallion basil blossom. Also tried the banana bread Malay cake which looked amazing but was meh, kind of dry.

Papa d'Amour 64 University Pl. New York, NY 10003 Butter Vanilla Soft Serve When I passed by this bakery I couldn't help but notice a large crowd dining inside and outside. The butter ice cream soft serve sidewalk billboard sign especially caught my eye, so I decided to give it a try. The overall appearance of the cone looked fantastic. It was definitely beautifully handcrafted and looks really appealing. Unfortunately, the taste was average. The top of the cone was completely covered in a butter shell. It was slightly chewy, but was on the bland side. The organic soft serve ice cream does not taste as well as original soft serve. It lacked flavor and something was definitely missing. The bakers were on the right track by placing a "surprise" mochi gummy on the bottom of the cone, but it didn't fit with the dessert. A hard piece of chocolate or white chocolate would have been a much better alternative. I am confident this bakery has other dessert choices that are definitely on the money, which accounts for the large crowd. In my honest critique, I truly do not feel the soft serve is their strong suit especially since I noticed I was the only customer in the shop who chose this particular dessert. #softservebuttercone #papadamour #papadamournyc #westvillage #organicsoftserve #mochi #buttervanillasoftserve

I've been to Papa d'Amour a few times and am always intrigued by their creative asian-inspired pastries. Tldr, I love their salt bread bagels, taro mochi donut, and shokupan the most! *Salt Bread Bagel $8.5 *** Highly recommend coming at 8 for a fresh batch! I grabbed this when it was fresh out of the oven. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, with a golden, buttery crust. It also has a butter hole inside that salt bread is known for. The salt flecks get a little charred and add crunch. It comes together as a set with a french cheese spread, though the bagel is already amazing on its own when warm. *Taro and Mochi Lace Batter Donut $7.5 ** A reimagined taro puff pastry (芋角) dim sum filled with mochi and guava jam . Crispy, flaky honeycomb crust on the outside, stretchy on the inside with a pop of guava tartness. Totally blown away by how good this is. *Pretzel Salted Egg Tart $4.5 The egg custard is brushed with brown butter, and the pretzel shell is studded with salt. I loved that it's made with a pretzel base.

Came here on a snowy weekend, and was really impressed with the service here. They handed out hand warmers given the cold weather. I tried the curry pan warmed up, and it was delicious! My friends got the egg sandwich, which was great as well. Wish I could have tried some of their other baked items as well, but the seating was all full. There's a moderate amount of seating, but it's usually always busy!

After seeing the Jolly YouTube episode about bakeries in NYC, I knew I had to go here. I was most looking forward to the egg tart and ended up thinking about the Taro Lace Battered Mochi donut. It was a little busy but we managed to grab a table. My friend promised to split everything with me and I mayyyy have gone overboard with the amount of items I got for the two of us, but gosh - coming from Indiana and having all of these incredible pastries/tarts & toasts/sandos/ and jam jars in front of me - I just couldn't stop ordering things! What a delight! - The pretzel egg tart was perfectly salted which balanced out the sweetness (it wasn't too sweet which was perfect!) - The Taro and Mochi Lace Battered Donut just hit the spot for me. I am a texture eater and loved the crunch on the outside, the softness on the inside from the mochi, and the mixture of tart and sweet tasting jam in the center. So good! - The Ube Coconut Jam Jar was delightful. It was so fun to cut into and if you love coconut you'd love this! The outside is thicker and light in flavoring. I was glad it was super sweet! The inside was creamy and delicious and it all went so well together! -The croissant bao wasn't my favorite but I can understand the appeal This place was awesome! I wish I lived in NY because I'd be here allll the time

Came here on a Tuesday early evening. Very cute and brightly lit bakery with a modest amount of seating. It's not very large, and gets super crowded. I was super lucky that a family noticed me and as they were leaving, they referred me to the table they had been sitting at. Scallion basil blossom roll (warmed): crunchy and flaky with scallion and basil stuffing. I love scallion (I am Taiwanese after all), and this makes me think of Jian bing in croissant form. Curry pan (warmed): exterior is crispy and hot, I think topped with grains of rice crispy, and it's stuffed with chicken curry. Piping hot, but not to the point it burns my mouth, and slightly spicy. Amazing savory curry pan! Pretzel salt egg tart: very good. It's not flaky like the egg tarts I'm used to. The shell is more shortbread-esque. Gingerbread mochi toastie: didn't care for the chocolate-covered half (though it does look pretty with the gold leaf), especially since I could not taste the gingerbread nor mochi, the chocolate was overwhelming. I do love mochi and gingerbread though. It would have been better without any chocolate . Black sesame jam jar (SO HARD to choose between matcha and ube, everything sounded amazing. I decided to honor my traditional Taiwanese palate and go for the black sesame): Exterior tasted like marshmallow. The consistency of the black sesame filling makes me think of black sesame dessert soup, and there's a delightfully crunchy bottom over a thin slice of cake. After eating all the filling, I devoured the white chocolate jar I ate everything in one sitting and it was so good! Even though next day I was admittedly sick of pastries lol.

A beautiful cafe, I got the salt bread bagel with fromage and it was so delicious. The bagel was soft and fluffy on the inside and had the perfect crunch. The ambiance itself was worth the trip!

Honestly, kind of overhyped. I was so excited to try some of the viral items I keep seeing on social media. They ended up selling out of the ones I wanted, but we tried a bunch of other pastries. One had pears and red bean, and another was a pesto pastry. We also got the mochi hot chocolate. Our favorite was prob the pesto pastry. Everything else confused our taste buds and not in a good way. The hot chocolate was basically an ordinary hot chocolate with a piece of grilled mochi in a stick. Nothing special unfortunately.

    Laura L.

I've walked past here several times before and there was always a line. Finally found a time when there was no line so I decided to try it out. I ordered the kurobuta hot dog spiral, taro and mochi lace batter donut, and the yakimochi hot chocolate. My favorite item was the donut. They had just made a new batch so it came out warm and crispy. I loved the flavor of the guava jam inside. Delicious!! This is a must get. The yakimochi hot chocolate was good, but I prefer richer/thicker hot chocolate so it wasn't my favorite. They heated up the hot dog spiral, which I appreciated. It was very unique and good, but I personally enjoyed the donut a lot more. There is some seating inside, but empty seats get taken up quickly. so depending on when you come, you may have to wait or just take your food to go. Staff is very very sweet and helpful. I don't think i'd necessarily wait on a long line to eat here. but if you walk by and see no line/or a short line, I think it's worth trying out! especially the donut!!

PAPA D'AMOUR WHEN: Thur @10:45am It appears we came on some sort of "influencer's day" where a good amount of camera-ready folks ordered the same item in front of their phone and a lighting equipment. They were all sitting outside though, so there's seatings both outside and inside--but quite limited. The place may feel a bit cramped as it's not that big. Here's what we ordered: TARO & MOCHI LACE BATTER DONUT - $7.50 Taro, Guava Strawberry Jam, Mochi If you are a fan of that flaky taro dumpling at Dim Sum, then you should love this. And I am not even a taro fan! But you sure tastes the guava strawberry jam, and the light crispy flakes and the soft and chewy mochi makes it all such a fascinating combo of textures! MANGO COCONUT JAM JAR - $11.00 Mango Passionfruit, Coconut Tapioca, Rice Pudding, Ladyfinger. The kind of dessert that you also eat the container, which seems to be made of white chocolate? Lots are going on in here and it's pretty interesting. Not too sweet which is always a plus. Definitely pricey though but hey it's fancy. The staff were super friendly and even gave me a sample of their new line of croutons, and insisted we were very honest about it--and man they are good! Seems like you really can't go wrong with ordering anything from here, whether it's savory or sweet. I sure hope I can taste everything here but my bank account won't allow it, haha! Just 2 will do....for now.

Tasty and fun! I'd especially wanted to try the jam jars but when I see pasties on display I kind of lose my head. So we got: Avocado cucumber sando: 4/5, on fluffy milk bread, perfect for a warmer day as a light "healthier" option. I wanna try to make this at home. Tomato egg bao: 5/5 this was so comforting. Such a homey flavor combo made restaurant quality, tastes so good in a steamed bao. Also inspired to try to make this at home too. Scallion basil blossom: 4/5 maybe my least favorite yet still great. Pretzel egg tart: 4/5 can an egg tart not be good? But I prefer both hk or Portuguese egg tart shells. Sesame jam jar: 5/5 yep worth the visit for. I was worried about the ratio of jar to sesame filling but it was all perfect. Although to be fair you can give me infinite amounts of sesame goop and I will happily slurp it all up. I wish I'd gotten a pic of the cross section.

I was hoping Papa D'amour was overhyped, but everything was so delicious. Some of the items reheated fairly well the next day too and tasted more flavorful. I even took the jam jar to go even though its recommended to eat in, and it made it through the 30 min train ride intact. Will need to go back to try the rest of the menu. Hard to pick a favorite but I really liked the kurobuta spiral and scallion basil blossom. Really cute place overall with a few tables and seating.

My wife got me a birthday cake from Salswee and I ate the whole thing. Not out of obligation. Not to be nice. Because it was genuinely that good. The cake was light in a way that most cakes are not. Fluffy texture, almost delicate, nothing dense or heavy about it. Inside there were mango pieces throughout and the top was finished with sliced fresh mango and a cream frosting that did not overpower anything. Every component worked together without any one element taking over. What got me most was how I felt after eating it. You know that heavy, bloated feeling you get after a slice of traditional birthday cake? That did not happen here. I finished the whole cake and felt completely fine. That alone says something about what they are working with. If you are in the area and you want something that actually delivers on flavor without wrecking you afterward, Salswee is absolutely worth trying. I ordered the orange, mango and mushroom suisse. There was a bit of a wait for the orders but it wasn't too bad. The cakes were secure in mini boxes and everything was packed into a nice paper tote bag for take out. The desserts were very delicate upon first glance but also easy to break apart (so things got a bit messy). The orange dessert had a more mellow and lighter flavor compared to the mango one. It had a orange mandarin jam center covered with a vanilla cream layer. I didn't really care too much for the chocolate rice crisp bottom layer. The leaves were maybe peppermint though if it was mint then that would make the whole dish edible. The mango dessert was sweeter than the orange one. The mango jam filling was sweet and had a few pieces of mango that were a bit sour but didn't take away from the overall sweet mango flavor. The cream covering the jam must've also been mango flavored. I really liked the mushroom suisse! I reheated it in the microwave for a bit before eating it. I loved the crispy exterior as it contrasted well with the softness of the puff pastry middle. The mushroom filling was also tasty as it reminded me a bit of cream of mushroom soup. I'll be giving their other savory pastries a try during my next visit. FYI, if posting on socials for the complimentary pastry, do so before ordering.

I was initially lured in by the good Yelp reviews. I liked that I could do everything online, I had a particular vision for what I wanted my birthday cake to look like and they communicated with me via email that could make my vision come true. I had a birthday celebration at a restaurant, which I asked The Evercake to have delivered directly to the restaurant. The delivery was smooth and the restaurant had the cake before I even got there. The cake was very cute and did look like what I had pictured. But...what I majorly disliked was the actual taste of the cake and being misled about what the contents of the cake would be. I selected the strawberry shortcake option for my cake and what I got was not what I thought it would be. I think it's quite normal for a strawberry shortcake to have like...real strawberries in between the layers. My cake didn't really have that, and if it did it was hidden in all the strawberry jam that there instead. I was not a fan of the cake texture too and the cream outside of the cake. Overall I felt so sad that I was feeding this to my friends and I told them that they didn't have to finish it because I wasn't going to either. So embarrassing :( Would you believe that this flop of a cake was nearly $200? And that's after the 10% coupon. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because it wasn't completely bad, but the cake not tasting good was the biggest thing for me. I would have preferred it the other way around at least, like if the service was so bad but the cake tasted amazing, but unfortunately that was not the case for me. After digging through the reviews some more, I found that this happened to another customer as well. I wish I had seen their review before ordering a "strawberry" shortcake from here lol dang

I can understand the inspiration the co-founders of Supermoon Bakehouse get for their flavors since they're both Australian, but the execution comes off very insincere. As if to only place an item on the menu just for the sake of shock value. It's very upsetting seeing a successful bakery business needlessly hop on a hot trend for the sole purposing of capitalizing on it. Completely removing the history of the flavors, showing complete lack of appreciation. Those trying southeast Asian flavors for their first time, they'll be satisfied because they don't know what they should expect. White people stealing things and making it their own again cause "it's the cool thing now" without acknowledging anything; a tale as old as time I guess. You can take the flavors, acknowledge it.
