In June I was so excited to see Strawberry Shortcake back on their menu. I missed it last year. Unfortunately it was too soggy for me and just tasted like a mouth filled with jelly, soggy dough. It was one of the last rolls on the tray which I thought was a good sign, but this one fell flat for me. They had a great flavor line up in June, with Cookies & Cream and Banana Bread also calling my name, but I stuck with my original plan of Strawberry Shortcake. Spirals has been poppin' off on social media, so I was excited to finally try it when I was in the area. Their flavors often change, so it can really vary depending on what you like. During my visit, they offered an Everything Bagel Roll ($9) and Strawberry Shortcake Roll ($8.50). I overheard someone asked if the strawberry had a cheesecake filling, which didn't and I was disappointed by this as well. I actually found the strawberry one to be too sweet for me that I actually couldn't even finish the entire roll and tossed it. I don't often toss food, so that said a lot. On the other hand, the everything bagel roll was amazing. I also am a big fan of everything bagel and savory food, so this was a hit for me. I did get this heated, which cost an extra 50cents --that's kind of ridiculous as well. Overall, some hits and some misses which ultimately averages this place in the middle unfortunately. It's also quite pricey for one roll and the extra heating charge is insane. Good to try if they have a flavor you love; otherwise, it's nothing all that special. I appreciate how essentially everything is made in house, they're clearly very intentional about crafting each month's flavors. I tried the vegan devil's food cake roll and found the roll to be aesthetically very pleasing, dough was soft, but the chocolate flavor somehow didn't come through as much as I expected. The dough itself wasn't sweet and there wasn't much of a filling within the roll so the whole thing was almost under-sweet which is hard to do as a chocolate on chocolate dessert. The 2PM closing time on weekdays is also quite tough, hopefully hours can expand so that it can be an after work stop! read more

finally tried spirals which has taken a permanent residence to my Instagram feed - we went about half an hour after they opened on a Sunday morning and there was no line whatsoever. it is a small shop with just two stools to eat inside so we sat outside on a bench. - the monthly flavor was a tiramisu, which sounds fun, but we were deeply called to the original with that cream cheese frosting. the frosting was perfect. it had the tang of a cream cheese frosting, but had just enough vanilla flavor to keep it cin bun glaze like - the roll itself was sitting in a pile of goo, and the glaze was smeared thickly along the insides. meaning, no dry bites. they warm it up, which allows for it to be quite soft - the blueberry roll was drowning in a compote that was not too sweet to detract from the roll itself. the frosting had an almost nutty taste and provided a great texture change. - the rolls are very large and each about $9. my only critique would be adding a little table outside and adding more cream cheese frosting options as it is objectively the superior frosting. the other flavor choices were all topped with a flavored buttercream frosting. read more
