I had been craving scallion pancake sandwiches and this place definitely did not disappoint My friends and I shared the egg and cheese scallion pancake, shrimp scallion pancake, Caesar salad, millet mochi donut, and twice baked bolo bao (chocolate and peanut butter). Both pancakes were fantastic with the crispy exterior and soft chewy interior. I slightly preferred the shrimp more because of the shrimp texture/taste. While the Caesar salad was sizable and good to share with friends, it was a little too saucy for my personal taste. Because of how full we were, we ended up saving the mochi donut and pineapple bun for later--both also good and not too sweet. Definitely appreciate that on weekends for brunch, they open up the win son seating area across the street. Spectacular Stopped by for some breakfast after learning it's not that difficult to get a table after the opening of their location in the L.e.s. Food was absolutely delicious, tried the bacon egg & cheese & jiucai pancake, which was savory & had really great flavor. Their black sesame cappuccino was delicious & packed a bunch (not a coffee drinker & enjoyed it). The jasmine tea was delicious. The pork & tofu fan tuan was a real surprise as well, the rice and egg were cooked to perfection as well as their tasty pork. The red rice donut was delicious but unexpectedly a thick heavy donut. The pinenut sun cookie was really really good, not too sweet with crispy edges (ended up being my second favorite thing i tried). The bakery itself is not that big, you have to order at the counter then find yourself a seat but if you're with one or more person I would say have one person order while the others find/save a table. Everything was a tiny bit pricy but the overall flavor and great service made up for it. Place is definitely worth going out your way for a visit. TL;DR - Fusion, heavier on the western end, come hungry. Food (3/5) - Had the chive scallion pancake, pork buns, twice baked bolo bun (peanut + chocolate). The chive scallion pancake is stuffed full of cheese, more than even a stuffed pizza crust - the cheese pull picture would've been amazing for the gram. How stuffed it is weighs down the layers of the pancake a little, so it's a bit more like a hearty quesadilla feel. The twice baked bolo bun has gone viral on multiple platforms and I was very excited to try it. It's a bit more like a stuffed croissant, though because it's a bread at the end of the day, the layers are a little heavier. Also has to be heavy enough to hold up the peanuts (it's peanuts, not peanut butter) and the chocolate. It was stuffed really full. The crusty top isn't too sweet, and is a greasier than the typical bolo bun because of the peanuts. It's a lot more filling than a pineapple bun. The pork buns are served in a little tray topped with scallions and cilantro, in a puddle of chili oil. It's a bit like wontons in chili oil, except this is in bao form. Bread is a great medium for sopping up the chili crisp, which was great, though the crispy bottoms get a little soggy from the sauce. Ambiance + Service (3/5) - the staff do try to be really helpful but it is extremely busy and there are almost never enough seats. The ceilings are also low, which is cozy when everyone is leisurely, but otherwise very noisy. There is a table in the middle that is standing room only. I was there on a day where there was a blizzard, so the few outdoor seats went unoccupied. Because so many people are standing, staff have to kind of find you with your number, so it does take a while to get your food. Not a place to stay long and / or relax with your food. Price (2/5) - It was always going to be hard to beat Chinatown pricing for a lot of the more simple offerings, but most entrees are 15-25, and the more elaborate pastries get up to 12. Life has been hectic so I don't get to go out and enjoy myself as often as I used to, but this place has been on my radar for a long time and just the thought of traveling all the way to BROOKLYN from SUFFOLK COUNTY always deterred me. Heard about this place from the Bon Appetit video with Lucas Sin & Eric Sze and had to check it out! I was particularly intrigued by the concept which is a Taiwanese American breakfast fusion. Fusion food is hard to execute well, so I had high expectations for this place. And boy, did they deliver. We arrived on a cold rainy day and queued in a line outside the bakery. There were about 15-20 people in front of us but the line moved very quickly. Since the bakery seating area was completely filled, we were directed to wait outside near the takeout window and eat across the street in the dining hall space. Food and drinks took about 15-20 minutes to be made and we walked across the street to the much more quiet and spacious dining hall area. It was much easier to find a seat. Food wise... Milk bun 11/10: okay this SLAPPED so hard it was nostalgic partially because it reminded me of mornings when my parents would steam the frozen custard buns for breakfast but it was a better version of it with "breadier" bread. It had a generous amount of custard filling and it was delicious. Custard toast 6/10: would skip on ordering this again, wasn't anything special and the toast was crisped well but I didn't really get much of the custard component. Chocolate bolo bao 7/10: tasted more like a chocolate croissant than a bolo bao. Could've also used more chocolate filling, it was very subtle. Drinks wise... Black sesame latte (with oat milk) 10/10: tasted exactly like a tangyuan. Not too sweet, very creamy! Would order again. Five spice latte 7/10: overall good very subtle spice flavor, I wish there was a little more kick to it but also very good. Savory dishes wise... Snow pea salad: Okay this was the sleeper agent!! I've been wanting to visit Win Son Bakery for so long to try that scallion pancake BEC! On a Saturday morning, there was a bit of a line outside of the bakery, but it moved relatively quickly. My group of three decided to order multiple things to share. The inside was also very crowded as we had the option to either take our order to go or dine-in. We shared the turnip cake, mochi donut, scallion pancake BEC, and egg tart. Although we initially ordered take out, we found some counter space that we squeezed into. The turnip cake was interesting and not like traditional turnip cakes I've had at dimsum, but I liked that it was fried! The mochi donut was ok and the scallion pancake was actually pretty large! The scallion pancake aspect didn't really have the taste or texture of a scallion pancake but the sandwich itself wasn't bad. I do wish it was more scallion-pancakey but it did seem Americanized. The egg tart was also only ok, as the crust was soft and not flaky and the custard didn't taste very authentic. Overall, I'm glad I tried Win Son Bakery but I'm not necessarily itching to return. Really torn by giving it a 3 star. I came lured by the Bon Appetit collab with two taiwanese chefs. They were taking one perfect bite of everything. This place was popping even in below freezing weather! They basically have two locations and even have a dedicated window for the take out orders. So I inherently have a negative bias towards places that try to reinvent something for the sake of making it their own. I love the idea of fan tuans with soy milk being the traditional taiwanese breakfast, but more importantly it was a breakfast item meant for the masses. It was cheap, easy to grab and go and enjoy on your way to work. While the flavors were very reminenscent, I cant get pass the high price point of the food items where I can get in Flushing or Chinatown for a fraction of the cost. Probably the best thing we ordered. Great flavor and well balanced Mortadella sando: way too much cheese. Like a gross amount. That paired with super greasy scallion pancake wraps, it just was unappetizing. Flavor was solid but the other elements were a big turn off. Don't recommend getting the spicy Mayo with this BEC sando: same as above. Too much cheese, too greasy. The bacon and egg combo was better than egg and mortadella. Went well with the spicy Mayo. Fries: excellent Cream bun: don't recommend. Flavorless calories. Red bean donut: ok. Would try something new in the future. Not too sweet. The dough in the donut was great. It's the first place I recommend my Taiwanese friends visiting from out of town to seek out, despite it being in kinda remote east Williamsburg. It's that good. Their Taiwanese-inspired New York-ish items are where they really shine though, like sandwiches in scallion pancakets featuring protein options like beef tongue pastrami. We like some of the pastries, like the laminated flavored bolo buns, though admittedly not every single pastry. Expect a long line all weekend long. The service is nice. Custard Toast: Very dry and was more or less cold and untorched when delivered. It was honestly kind of gross. Without any actual torch on top, it just tasted like butter mixed with sugar on top of very stale, refrigerated, flavorless thick bread. Yuck. Only heard amazing things about this place so I was very excited to try their goodies but they're honestly just fine to me... The Mortadella Pancake Wrap had good flavors but it wasn't mindblowing. I've been eyeing Win Son for awhile now, but it's a bit out of the way for me to get to. On a Saturday evening, I finally found myself off the L train, so we came for a late lunch or early dinner. Even at 3pm, there was a line of 6-8 people ahead of us, which I heard is pretty short for Win Son. You order at the cashier and then have your food brought out to you. We were able to find a nice outdoor seat to people watch. They also offered water, but had to ask for some ice as the lukewarm water was not it. Between the two of us, we got the Jiucai Pancake ($15), Fried Chicken Milk Bun ($17), Turnip Cake ($4), Custard Toast ($6), and two canned drinks ($4 each). The favorite was definitely the jiucai pancake, which was savory and tasty with cheese oozing out. It was a bit messy to eat, but so worth it. Don't be intimated that it's vegetarian, but this scallion pancake is filled with chives, rice noodles, havarti, shallots, and egg that infuses into a wonderful medley. I also enjoyed the custard toast with its creamy topping that was toasted. While I also enjoyed the turnip cake, it's so pricey for one when you can usually get 3 at a dim sum spot. The turnip cake has a more crispy texture than the classic version as well. The fried chicken was a bit too crunchy and not as tender, especially since the milk bun is so soft in contrast. Overall, the food is delicious but too pricey for the portions you get here. This is an Americanized version of Taiwanese classics, so the price reflects the elevation. I'd only come back for the scallion pancake sandwiches, which are definitely a unique and delicious item on the menu. read more

Scallion pancake-- incredible!! Perfectly crisp and tasty. Def recommend!! Mochi donut- okay this left me speechless. Best donut I've ever had ever. I'm from Houston where we know our donuts (and yes, we have mochi donuts too) but I have never had a donut like this one. The texture was def something to experience--I got one to go and had it later in the day and it still had a soft and spongy interior with a crisp exterior. The flavor was sweet yet also had a slight tang. Choco chip toffee cookie-- great size and crisp. Good snack but I would pick the donut over the cookie. read more
