This is a cute little place with good customers service, great prices and a variety of products to select from. They offer prepackaged snacks/food items and fresh made off the grill. They have a variety of drink items and a few office items that may come in handy. I think to keep prices low they use cheaper items and canned goods. This is not a terrible thing but it also isn't a great thing. If high quality is what you want and price is not an issue you may want to go elsewhere. However, if price is a consideration, you can eat here for a good price and have a decent meal. My favorite part about this place is the people that work here. They are funny and friendly! read more

For a state (employee) cafeteria; they are a very good deal. It is not just for state employees as anyone can get in. (enter on the Brazos side by the gazebo) They have a hot plate daily special or you can order burgers, chicken sandwiches, depending on availability is a $3 taco salad or club sandwich with chips. They have deli sandwiches, chef salad, ice cream bars, cookies and lots of candy and some unusual and unique food items. They also have a mini-store and sell aspirin, greeting cards, and other emergency items like umbrellas. It's not anything I would go across town for but you can't beat the price. I would give it 4 stars, but it's still cafeteria food, and there's something wrong about putting cafeteria food right next to Rudy's BBQ =) That said, the food here is tasty, warm, and will fill you up for cheaper than anything else out there (including McD's - blech). Entree and a side for $3? That's a deal! Also, they're open til 4pm, so you can get a late cup o' coffee, some healthy (just kidding) packaged snacks, or a tuna sandwich in the fridge if you're lucky. The fried okra's great, as are the tacos (breakfast as well as the hard tacos they sometimes have for lunch). The burger is very tasty, and is much fresher than McD's (blech). The staff are very cordial as well. This place has probably saved me a chunk of change this past year of working for the State of Texas, and while I've probably taken a hit on the saturated fat intake, I figure since I try to eat smaller portions here than I normally would, it all balances out. I appreciate your 99 cent breakfast tacos, and your fried okra is quite tasty; however, so far, everything else has been pretty poor. How do you mess up grilled cheese? How hard is it to avoid making the coffee taste like dirt? I knew I was going out on a limb by ordering a cafeteria pork chop, so that one's on me, I guess. I do have one request. Is there something you can do about ventilation? This place always smell like old bacon, and subsequently scents me with old bacon aroma. Anyway, you provide a convenient source of caffeine, fat, and carbs for the government drones (myself included). Thanks for that. UPDATE Add one star for the "Travis Cafe!" Ventilation still doesn't work well, but the fresh coat of paint and the new flat screen TV help perk the place up a bit. Recently, I tried a cheeseburger meal ($3). I was pleasantly surprised. The fries were soggy and not salted, but the burger had decent seasoning and was served fresh off the griddle. The credit card minimum thing is not only stupid, it is against their card holder agreement that they signed. I understand their feelings behind it and that it cuts into profits, but tough, you signed the rules, now follow it. It is the closest cafeteria to the Comptroller's Office where I work. That alone is not enough to get me to eat There. You have to walk through a gauntlet of grease that smells terrible to enter the cafe.The food quality is as poor as I have ever experienced. My high school cafeteria was even better and it was sketchy. If you have to eat there, the club sandwich is the only item I would trust. read more

I'm reviewing this place in honor of yesterday's promise that I'd eat at the state office cafeteria over ordering from Magic Wok ever again. So I went to the Travis today and had my usual. Double cheeseburger, fries, and a large drink. The burger is pretty good and the grease factor is just right. The fries are pretty standard frozen fries, but they get a point for being pretty hot. However, wrapping an order of fries in Saran Wrap does end up with steamy, limp fries. All in all, it probably deserves a 2 star review, but the staff is friendly and the prices are right, so I'll go with three stars. And they're less likely to foul up an order than Magic Wok! read more

As you approach the William B. Travis Building Cafeteria from the outside, it appears to be a cozy, quaint little spot. As with a cottage nestled in the woods, you'll travel beneath large, overhanging trees. You'll walk along the bicycle-lined pathway past a quiet, naturally-lit seating area. Entering through two sets of glass, double-doors, customers are welcomed by an ambiance and decor reminiscent of times long past. For me, it invokes a sense of nostalgia as I remember the homes of the 80's television shows I watched as a kid. The staff is warm and welcoming, yet often a little quirky. They have been kind to me on my many visits, which has always been appreciated. Kudos to management who not only employ a blind cashier (and he absolutely kills it behind the machine), but also for (as I understand it) donating a portion of the profits towards blind education locally. I can't imagine profits are substantial, however. The prices are so incredibly low, you'll be confused and dumbfounded as to how they continue to operate. After ordering, you'll be pleased by the over sized portions and incredible value you'll believe you've discovered. Unfortunately, the food is pretty bad. Not terrible, but pretty bad. It's akin to that feeling after eating your guilty-pleasure fast food. (For me, it's Taco Bell) You know the feeling. It's how you'll enjoy it while you're eating but then immediately regret it afterwards. It's like that except without the first enjoyment part. It doesn't taste great while you're consuming it, and then afterwards, you'll be a bit nervous about the general state of your health. read more

The answer to the question "what is that greasy stink in the basement?" is the William B Travis Cafeteria. Do you want a quick snack at the William B Travis building? Well, this cafeteria is your only choice because this vendor's contract with the state does not allow the building to have vending machines. Do you want one small snack, but only carry credit/debit cards (because this is 2016)? Then you will go hungry, because they are cash only for transactions under three dollars. To their credit though, they do their best to over-charge for most snack items to help you get to the three dollar price point. Thanks for making a quick snack so difficult. read more

Rating a state cafeteria is kind of like rating a McDonald's. What's the point? That said, they have a much better veggie burger and chicken sandwich than you'd expect, and they have a huge selection of chips and candy (the last thing state employees need -- me included). Not great, maybe not even good, but it's dirt cheap and close by if you are a state employee. read more

Every time I get some sort of a meat plate and veggies, my stomach absolutely hates it! It's super greasy! And I have a stomach of a horse , I can eat pretty much anything without any issues what so ever. Breakfast tacos are great! It is conveniently located to my job and its dirt cheap... I guess I can't complain about dirt cheap and not the highest quality food. It's usually either expensive and better quality, or lesser quality but dirt cheap. You can have a full lunch for about $4 here. Snack prices are just like every other convenience store, so nothing really socking. I gave it 3 star only because cooked lunch is something I would never buy again, but everything else is not too bad actually. read more

The reason I am recommending it is because the cafeteria is open to everyone not just state employees. And it is reasonably priced. You can get something to eat for around $5.00. Some of the food is better than other. I don't particularly care for their meat loaf or enchiladas. However again it is open to the public and the price is pretty reasonable. You can not even get into any of the other building unless it is the Bob Bullock Museum. I have not been into their building. Years ago ERS, and Reagan Building were open to everyone and had cafeterias. And now they are closed do not have a cafeteria for the public and everyone has to check in with security guards. This place is great, all sandwiches and salads are made fresh daily, and where else in Austin texas can you get a entrée with 2 sides and bread for 3.35 no where. The folks have a very small area to prep food in but manage to serve hundreds of customers everyday, and all day. On the prices alone this place receives a four. People are giving bad ratings, based on food quality alone it seems. No its not a five star restaurant. So therefore I would not compare it to other five star places. For a cafe/grill, which is just what it is, (Hello people, seriously) it is decent. Its super convenient for state employees downtown. It has things that a normal grill would: Hamburgers (hot, made to order, fries, chips, drinks (fountain and can), candy, snacks etc. There is also everyday a main entree or dish served hot. Monday is baked chicken, Tuesday is Meatloaf, Wednesday is Fried chicken/Salisbury Steak, Thursday is tacos, and /Friday is fried/baked fish. For what you pay (Which is dirt cheap for real food) I think the food is decent. Now I don't go in expecting Perry's steakhouse, or Z'tejas, etc. This is a grill, not a full service restaurant. For breakfast lunch and dinner you could walk away paying less than 12.00. Now where is that possible this day and age? An hooottttt too. I say its a win in my book. You people giving low points obviously don't understand difference between grill/restaurant/etc. If you don't like it you certainly have Blanton cafe as a choice. Paying 10.00 for a turkey burger alone that feels and tastes like rubber is not a good thing to me. They are way overpriced for how the food tastes, but that's a whole other post. : ) read more

I've been coming here for the past 5 years or so. It's cafeteria style food, so the expectation for some 5 star restaurant just shouldn't be there. For what it is, the food is good. A 2 item breakfast taco, some potatoes and a 20 oz soft drink for about $3.25 is a steal compared to the capitol grill. $1 tacos on Thursday is also a very good deal. This place gets an extra star from me simply because lunchtime dining options are severely limited in the Capitol Complex area, and there are a few things on the menu they do competently, if not well. I prefer this place to other,similar options such as the Chicken Bowl on Lavaca. Sometimes the fried chicken (Wednesdays) is OK. I have friends who love their crispy tacos (Thursdays), but I suspect that's only because of nostalgia for their elementary school lunchrooms. Their cheeseburgers are competent, sometimes even good. Some of the sides they serve are also edible, such as the fried squash, fried okra, greens, and black-eyed peas. It's also pretty cheap, which is a plus. You charge for ice?! WTF?! Are you for real?! I could've walked 30 feet to the ice dispenser near the elevators and gotten all the free ice I wanted!! OK, after I got over the initial shock and disgust of having to pay for ice, and we're talking at most 10 little itty bitty cubes, AND seriously considering a boycott of this place... I must say that I do like the breakfast tacos here. You can put two items in a taco (mix and match between eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes) wrapped in a flour tortilla. For a $1. I gotta hand it to the folks at the WBT cafeteria (or "Ronnie's Cantina", as my friends affectionately call it). I would have given them 1 star, but they've really made an effort to fix the place up--new layout of the cafeteria, fresh paint, and a state-of-the-art bacon-stench removal system. Ok, I made the last one up, but kuddos to these folks for making some much-needed changes. So, if you find yourself in the Travis building and simply must eat, follow the fried swine smell and stop in at Ronnie's. The garden burgers are good, as is the "gourmet" coffee (as Jill points out, the regular coffee tastes a lot like dirt.). Very inexpensive for State employees on a budget and very close to the office. The portions are large enough to tide you over to dinner. I feel lucky to have this cafeteria here and have never noticed the 'old bacon' aroma that bothers Jill & Lara. Or maybe I like it.
