    Fried chicken special.
    Cris G.

I gave it a third star simply because it's in the Capital. Bill J and I took a walk to the Capital today to give their cafeteria a try. He had been before, I had not. The special was fried chicken. It was tasty-ish, but not the best fried chicken you've had. It had certainly been fried at least an hour previously. The mashed potatoes, also tasty, were cold. The whole meal was just over $10. Not a bad deal for downtown. Be better if the food was better. They also have BBQ, tacos, and a sandwich bar. The tacos looked pretty good. It is located on the E1 floor on the north end of the Capital. You do have to go through security to get in the Capital now.

The most common access is by entering the state capitol and then taking an elevator down to E1. As you enter you can grab a tray and silverware and you will encounter the hot food line which always has BBQ, Chicken Fried Steak, taco Salad, etc. Then there is a deli/sandwich/burger line where they will make you a burger. In the middle is a nice salad bar that I assume they do by weight. There are premade salads and sandwiches in a refrigerator case. They have fountain drinks but no refills on soda (only tea I think). There are also plastic knives and forks by the cashier if you dont want the fancy silverware. Prices are a bit on the high side. My taco salad was $6.50 and my large drink was $1.85. Chicken Fried Steak is a preformed patty but was decent for $6.95. You check out with a cashier and I never found it to be crowded yet. The dining room is nice large tabes but you can move tables together? There always seem so be some important people eating like lawyers, etc. They like you to bus your own table and there is a conveyor to place your tray and silverware on and trash cans for anything disposable. It's decent but can be pricy. I hadn't been to the capitol in awhile so you need to be aware that everyone who enters will be run through a metal detector, meaning you have to empty your pockets, walk through and then gather your items on the other side. It's pretty painless but can be a hassle if there is a line of school kids. There are always school kids in the capitol If you are lucy enough to be a CHL holder, then all you have to do is show your CHL to the guard whereupon they will swipe it in their reader and less you go around the metal detector. That's more like an express pass. There is a nice gift shop right next to to the Grill.

I absolutely love the vibe of this place--it's definitely a high-end Mediterranean restaurant, perfect for special occasions. What really stood out was how beautifully everyone was dressed; it added to the upscale, elegant atmosphere of the entire space. The restaurant offers both indoor seating and a beautiful outdoor seating area, which really elevates the overall experience. The outdoor space, in particular, adds to the charm and makes it a great spot for a relaxed yet upscale evening. Since reservations weren't available, we decided to arrive early, expecting a long wait. Luckily, being a Sunday evening, it wasn't too crowded, and we were seated within about 20 minutes. For drinks, I ordered a Tender Robot Hazy IPA, while my husband went with the Verdant Mai Tai. I was a bit disappointed to learn they only serve canned beer and don't offer draft options, as I personally prefer draft beer and am not a big fan of cocktails, which tend to be too sweet for my taste. For the main course, I had the Heirloom Chicken Thighs, and my husband ordered the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. Both dishes were cooked to perfection--flavorful, well-seasoned, and the meat was incredibly tender. That said, the portion sizes felt a bit small considering the price point. We ended the meal with the Sticky Date Cake, and it was hands down the best I've ever had--rich, perfectly balanced, and absolutely delicious. Overall, we had a great experience. Between the beautiful ambiance, flavorful food, and exceptional service, it's a place I'd definitely return to. I'm giving it 4 stars mainly because of the lack of draft beer and the smaller portion sizes for the price, but it's still a fantastic spot worth visiting.

I had hoped we would get an outdoor table to appreciate the view but all tables were booked when I made the reservation and were still booked when we got there a bit early. It was also overcast that day. Even though we were a bit early, they were able to seat us quickly. We ended up just having drinks and one side item (yummy squash dish). We made the decision to leave before a full meal because the menu wasn't as vegetarian and gluten free friendly as we'd thought it might be. Danny was our waiter and he was very understanding! He gave us several great drink recommendations. We all very much enjoyed our cocktails and mocktail with a side appetizer of squash. We appreciated the discount on valet parking if you eat at Nido and get your ticket validated. I'm sure I'll be back here on a sunny day and book far enough in advance to sit outside.

The cocktails were delicious, although definitely on the pricey side. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting. The portions were extremely small, and the prices felt very steep for both the quality and the amount served. While the presentation was nice, the taste simply didn't justify the cost. On top of that, having to pay $15 for valet added even more to an already expensive evening. Overall, Nido is worth visiting once for the views and a cocktail, but I personally wouldn't return for dinner. There are plenty of other spots in Austin that offer much better value for the price.

The beef tartare was the first to be cleaned. Our favorite starter. 2. Apple cashew salad was a refreshing take on a pad thai. 3. Tempura mushrooms were incredibly memorable in umami, sweetness, acidity, and perfect fry. Highly recommend for a comforting shareable. 4. Lobster spaghettini was a justified lobster pasta take - something you can't always say when you take chances on lobster pasta. They use the carcass of the lobster on the generous, silky beurre blanc which was worth a soup spoon. 5. Half chicken and parisian gnocci was a great alternative for a typical body builder meal. Perfectly tender and the fried gnocchi was delicious. Bonus: - Shoutout to Chris, our server, who made us feel welcomed like friend. We learned so much about the location's genesis and architecture which made it that much more interesting. - A true NY-inspired must-experience gem. Please see the structure of the patio and the ship-sourced sun room private space they have. Nice to know: - Complimentary valet - The Cedar Tavern is adjacent and next on our list for happy hour! The establishment is even grander than the photos make it out to be... massive rooms peppered with large wooden beams; tables; and ironworks throughout. There were two other tables finishing up, and us. Our 40-something waiter had just the right balance of casual earthiness and professional attentiveness to match the stateliness of this restaurant. I ordered the Double Feature (Mezcal, hibiscus, ginger) $17 and she her usual "old fashioned" Montecristo (rye, highland park, cynar) $18. Both were fabulous. For apps we noticed charred/tossed brussles with one of the entrees and asked our waiter if that could be an appetizer (not on the menu) and he promptly said Done! It was terrific. For entrees she ordered the Texas Wagyu Strip $48 and I had my go-to fav whenever I see it on a menu: Short Rib $40. See the menu pics for the sauces and sides, suffice to say... incredible. By 8p we were the only occupants left in this cathedral-like establishment and ended up lingering until 9:45, ordering another drink and then one of THE best desserts I have ever had... the Guinness Chocolate Cake (with pumpkin puree, candied quinoa, and maple/choc ice cream) $12. We agreed that the candied quinoa was over the top - adding a delightfully subtle crunch to every bite in this richly dark choc dessert. After realizing that for the past hour we were keeping the bartender, host, waiter, and kitchen singlehandedly at our beckon call, we quietly dropped a c-note for a four-way tip. Thank you folks for the beautiful welcome wagon and chance to unwind and reconnect after 9 hours on the highway!
