    Range Restaurant at Brasada Range.
    Rachel H.

Range is a stunning spot, about 30 minutes drive outside of Bend, with one of the best views of the Three Sisters and a fantastic spot to catch a sunset. Very quiet and under utilized, Range seemed to be a place to take someone for a special occasion, like a birthday, anniversary, or to celebrate another gorgeous sunset in Bend. This is admittedly a very pricey restaurant, which is what probably keeps the crowds away. Adjusting the menu slightly would increase its popularity and the locals and their willingness to drive all this way for some darned tasty food and great sunsets. As it was, the place was mostly filled with guests at Brasada and a handful of special events being celebrated. Admittedly, there was a little too much Nashville music on the radio for our tastes, and that for me was the one mood killer. Through it may fit the setting, it would be nice to see them mix in a different genre for a more sophisticated feel, since Range is all about ambiance and setting a mood, and for some people C&W music doesn't inspire the romance. Range serves dinner, excellent wines by the glass, great bites, cocktails, desserts and boasts incredible views of the 3 Sisters. Even if you don't stay at Brasada Ranch, head over to Range for a sunset view and a round of their gourmet smores and drinks. Nom. We can highly recommend the burger (a perfect medium rare), the kale side (its like creamed kale, but doesn't utilize cream, just perfect braising technique) and the pork belly lettuce wraps (seriously good.) Even the dishes that fell short for us like the crab cakes (three very small portions) and the peach melba (one small broiled peach halved with vanilla ice cream in an awkward tiny serving bowl) were still very tasty. Give Range a try. Its a quiet, secret spot with good food and a great setting.

We waited a couple of hours and the room was still not ready at the new guaranteed time. The first room they offered us would not open so they gave us another room, but then when we went into the second room, it totally was not made ready for new guests. Check out all of the photos attached. The bed was not made and clearly used by prior hotel guests. The bathroom didn't have all of the lights functioning, but worse had towels that were dirty and we're all hung up together on the hook. Trash was not taken out. The room also was set to such a high temperature that I could not adjust nor put on any AC in the thick of summer heat. Outside there was a dead rodent right outside the patio that looks like it had been sitting there for a long time. The worst part is when I complained about this, the person who answered was very Flippin did not apologize and was very defensive saying that they were swamped. I understand that it was a holiday weekend, but to deny my experience and not offer anything aside from a dinner was reprehensible and totally not anywhere near the kind of service that a four star resort should offer. The following morning to placate us, they left a basket of perishable items, but didn't even check in with us and so by the time we opened it with the heat and hours sitting there, it was not edible anymore. Organization was also an issue because when I tried going to yoga, I got there early and per the attached signs. Everyone was supposed to meet there. I waited and waited called the front desk, asked where it was supposed to be even called the phone number listed on the sign yet did not find the class eventually I hitched a ride with the resorts golf cart and they drove me to the usual hiking place and I ran after the group to try to catch up, but I already missed part of the hike and it clearly was the fault of whoever organized it. I travel a lot and have stayed at many resorts all over the world, and this was the most disorganized and horrible service, especially considering the bad experience we went through. There were no offers to comp our bill or to make it right. Just excuses I would stay away from this until it has new management.

Between the exceptionally good food at Hook and Plow, a most pleasant hotel experience, and a memorable trip to the High Desert Museum; our trip to Bend turned out to be a pleasure instead of the miserableness I expected. We had the Steak Tartare, the Chef's Board, the Blackend Crabcake, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Bone-in Pork Chop. We each got the cheesecake for desert and split the other dishes. This was more than enough for the three of us and we left full, happy, and with three large to-go boxes. The flavors of the various dishes were amazing. While all the dishes were vvery good, the standouts to me were the steak Tartare, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Cheesecake.

We were greeted by the host and seated quickly. We started our meal with a delicious non-alcoholic drink and the Chef's Board: a charcuterie with an assortment of cured meats, rustic bread, and various spreads. That came out pretty quickly. Unfortunately, our main courses came out much, much later and lukewarm. Luckily, the food was good enough that it made up for the temperature. I had the NY strip steak. The steak and the Boursin mashed potatoes alone were very good. The pickled onions and chimichurri complemented the meat very well. The meal was supposed to include brussel sprouts but came with a grilled broccoli cauliflower assortment instead. My wife had the Scallop Risotto which was also a great recommendation from the server. In reality, The Hook & Plow deserved 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option on Yelp. It may have been an off night for the staff, so I will give them the benefit of doubt. We would be open to trying it again sometime in the future.

The menu isn't very large and I think we both settled on choices quickly, deciding to try the most "quintessential" entrees to share. I chose the Blackened Redfish, and my boyfriend the Jambalaya. Even though we had already decided, the waitress went on her whole spiel through the menu highlights, including what we had already had planned to order. Awkward, but it was fine, and we didn't stray from our original choices. The Blackened Redfish was perfectly cooked and flaky. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a slightly tangy sauce. All of it was tasty, but I was a bit disappointed in the lack of spice to the blackening seasoning and the sauce. Also, serving it on grits instead of mashed potatoes would have made it feel 100% more Cajun, even with lack of seasoning. The Jambalaya fared a bit better, although my boyfriend was also left puzzled by the lack of spice to this classic dish. In all ways it was a very good representation of New Orleans style red jambalaya, with the andouille sausage being particularly notable for flavor. The cornbread it came with was pretty good. We shared a piece of chocolate cake for dessert. A very decadent concoction of chocolate, peanut butter, and caramel. It was one of the better $12 slices of cake I've had. Overall? The service was good, if not a bit awkward with the menu spiel. The food was all very well prepared, but for a Cajun style restaurant they sure could stand to spice things up a bit. It's not cheap, but at least the entrees are a full sized meal and you don't have to order many "tiny plates" to cobble together a dinner.

So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place.
