Peppe's restaurant in Canutillo, Texas characterizes itself as a "New Mexican Food Restaurant" so…read morenaturally I just had to drive down to see what it is all about. Since I have lived in New Mexico for many years and dined in all the Mexican food restaurants in Las Cruces as well as others around the state, I have a sound point of reference as to what is good New Mex cuisine. Inside the restaurant is nicer than you might expect from viewing it from the outside. It is full of light, open, clean, and a comfortable place for dining. Upon entering I was greeted by a friendly gentleman and told to sit wherever I wanted. There are two dining areas, a smaller room near the entrance and a larger dining area through an archway. The seating is exclusively on banquet chairs with large tables. A waitress was at my table within a minute or two with a menu, a bowl of chips and a little glass flask with salsa. The service was very pleasant and efficient. Everybody working there seemed most friendly and accomodating. Wanting to sample a wide variety of their "New Mexican" food I ordered the #3 combo plate. It was prepared and on my table within eight to ten minutes. It came with Spanish rice, whole pinto beans, a rolled taco filled with ground beef, an enchilada, a chile relleno, and red chile con carne, A small dish of their coleslaw was served on the side. So, how did the food taste? Was it "New Mexican?" Was it good? High in quality New Mex food? Let's find out. The enchilada was covered in their red chile sauce with a bit of shredded cheese. Their rolled taco was sandwiched between the enchilada and the relleno and strangely enough it was sitting in the red sauce which made it impossible to pick up and eat with your hands. Strange way to serve a rolled taco??? The relleno had no sauce over it. The plate had the appearance of New Mex food, but what of the quality? To begin, the chips were very ordinary. They rate about a "C." The tomato based salsa was low on flavor and heat. Very mediocre salsa. Rate it a "C"...no better. The beans were a bit bland and quite undistinguished. Give them a C." The rice was the usual. Rate the rice a "C+." It was fluffy and prepared well. The rolled taco which had to be eaten with a knife and fork was somewhat tough and chewy with little corn flavor. The beef filling was not very well seasoned. Rate the rolled taco a "C-." Not something to look forward to. The enchilada was ok as far as it went but the red chile sauce...THE HALLMARK OF NEW MEX CUISINE...covering it was not good. The red chile sauce at Peppe's was really below the New Mex standard. Thus, the enchilada rated about a "C." The chile con carne had some properly sized and tender chunks of pork but again the red chile sauce had little flavor and was quite bland. Not up to the New Mexican standard. Rate the red chile con carne about a "C." Rate the red chile sauce a "C-." Not the stuff of legend. The relleno was plainly speaking not very good. The coating and the chile pepper itself were both soft and mushy with little flavor. Rate Peppe's chile relleno this day a "D" for poor. The coleslaw was vinegar based and not mayo based. It had therefore a little zing to it but at the end of the day it was nothing to write home about. Rate it a "C." So, all in all, I came away a little disappointed. Although I like the restaurant and found the people there nice and the service very good, I found all the food, while not bad, (relleno excepted) to be very pedestrian. I hate to say this given how pleasant the people at Peppe's are but I did not find one food item that was really good. None of this was a good version of New Mexican cuisine. Thus, rate the overall dining experience at Peppe's in Canutillo THREE AND A HALF STARS....not bad but not a great experience for for a full serve restaurant. Everything tasted today was "C" level food. The folks that pass out five star ratings I can only say that they must have a very limited perspective regarding New Mex cuisine.

The plate presented was a textural nightmare, a soggy and unidentifiable heap of "grossy ew yucky…read moreslop" that felt more like a culinary mistake than a meal. The base was a lukewarm, gelatinous mess, lacking any of the freshness or vibrant spice you expect from a Mexican kitchen, replaced instead by a muddy, over-processed consistency that made every bite a struggle. Visually, it was a dull, unappealing swamp of gray-brown tones, and the flavor followed suit with an overwhelming, metallic saltiness that tasted like it came straight from a factory vat rather than a stovetop. There was a complete lack of structural integrity; everything had dissolved into a singular, mushy paste that coated the mouth with a heavy, greasy film that no amount of lime or water could cut through. It was an insulting, flavorless pile of industrial waste that showed zero respect for the ingredients or the customer. The widespread normalization of this kind of nutrient-void, industrialized slop represents a catastrophic tipping point for global food security, signaling a future where the human race faces a form of functional starvation despite having full stomachs. This shift is driven by a reliance on monoculture industrial farming, which strips the earth of its topsoil and biodiversity to produce the cheap chemical fillers and stabilizers necessary for shelf-stable, hyper-processed mush. As the soil is depleted of its natural minerals, the crops grown within it become nutritionally hollow, leading to a global crisis of hidden hunger where the population consumes adequate calories but lacks the essential micronutrients required for cellular repair and cognitive function. Furthermore, by dismantling localized, resilient agriculture in favor of a fragile, energy-intensive industrial supply chain, we are creating an infrastructure that is one major disruption away from total collapse. When the factories can no longer process the additives and the global transport of these products fails, there will be no traditional farming knowledge or fertile land left to fall back on. Ultimately, by prioritizing short-term caloric convenience over the biological and ecological necessity of real, whole food, we are essentially consuming our own future, trading the long-term survival of the species for a bowl of gelatinous waste that provides the illusion of sustenance while the foundations of human health and environmental stability crumble.

Only complaint, there was no shredded cheese on the gorditas. Rice and beans were also good, as well as the freshly made salsa, perfect in tatse, not too spicy, just right! Thanks to the guy running this place, he brought out things for me to sample, pork chile Colorado, delicious, and so were the tostadas, salsa, and a slice of flour tortillas!

We are so happy he found this gem! I ordered the cheese Christmas enchiladas plate, my husband ordered the build-your-own taco plate, and the kids ordered burritos. Everything was absolutely delicious! The green enchiladas were my favorite--the sauce was creamy, rich, and incredibly flavorful. I can definitely see why these enchiladas have earned such a great reputation. The tacos were completely decimated in our family...not a single bite was left! From the delicious food to the friendly service and welcoming atmosphere, this was one of our favorite meals of the trip. We'll absolutely be back the next time our road trips bring us to Texas. HIGHLY recommend!

Our waiter, Chase, quickly came to our table to offer us drinks. Chase was very attentive throughout the entire meal. He brought our food out quickly and checked on us as we ate to ensure we were not lacking anything. Excellent service!! Now for the food... The small bowl of chips didn't have a chance to empty before Chase brought another bowl (without us having to ask). We loved the salsa bar where we were able to select the salsas that we wanted to try. We chose the traditional, jalapeño and tomatillo, pico de galio, and chipotle. We agreed that all of them were delicious. My husband had the fish tacos. The serving size was great!! He would have preferred grilled fish rather than the breaded and fried fish; but all-in-all he said it was good. (For non-fish eaters like myself, the fish smell was quite strong and overpowered the smells of the rest of our meals). My daughter got the Monster build your own burrito with chicken. She loved it and said the grilled chicken was delicious!!! My daughter's boyfriend had the chicken enchiladas Christmas (green and red sauces for those who may not be familiar). He loved it! Like my daughter, he too enjoyed the grilled chicken that came in his enchiladas. I had the cheese enchiladas Christmas with 2 fried eggs and sauce on the side. The sauces were both delicious!!!! Everyone at the table enjoyed tasting the green sauce which had a creamy and cheesy consistency with the perfect amount of green chilies and heat. The red sauce was a traditional New Mexico red enchilada sauce with exactly the right amount of heat. My single complaint about my meal is that I could have counted the number of cheese shred pieces between each tortilla of the enchiladas. All of us liked the refried beans and Spanish rice that came with our meals.

Some of the best Mexican food east of California!…read more Great quality and great prices. We stop here every time we cross the country. Just a few blocks away from the freeway with plenty of parking.

Short background, as I understand it,... Si Senor restaurants, located in Las Cruces, Deming, and…read moreChandler, are independently owned by different members of the Castillo family (so they are not owned by the same people.... just members of the same family). This includes two Si Senors, and Si Senor Express in Las Cruces, one location in Deming, and one location in Chandler, AZ. I've been to all five. Each location offers a different level of quality, of basically the same menu (some more than others). I have reviewed the other four in their own separate reviews here on Yelp. (HINT: My favorite locations are the Lohman in LC, and the one in Chandler. I used to like the Express, but they have cut corners too much, including slicing their stuffed sopaipillas in half to only include the top portion of the pastry). The Deming location is perhaps the second least favorite of the author of this review (leaving their White Sage Ct one for last). To start with, the service was excellent. Not sure, but it seemed that family members of the owner were waiting tables and working the register. They were on point, and were doing a good job, never idle, always cleaning or preparing for the morning crowd. The food, however, wasn't up to par with the other restaurants. Ok, so maybe better than some other restaurants, just not the family's other ones... The prices at all locations are different. The Deming prices are very reasonable, and a big factor as to why we stopped here on our recent trip through Deming. The dish I ordered was to have been smothered in green chile and cheese. There was about a tablespoon of cheese, and maybe 1/8 C of chopped chile. The other thing was their weird tasting sopaipillas. Not bad, just weird. They had a hint of vanilla flavoring, making them sweet and donut like tasting. Which is ok if you have some for desert, and actually good. But I usually don't. I use them to scoop up my plate. But also, makes for some weird tasting stuffed sopaipillas. One thing of note, is that the LC and, if I recall correctly, the Chandler location, has the four 1/4 C salsas; a red, green, cream cheese and green chile, chorizo and bean. Here, there was just the one, the red, which made us sad, but it was different than the red included at the other restaurants, it was much BETTER! Really tdf. The chips were house made and really crunchy, which I like. 5 stars on the salsa and chips! Overall, would we eat here again? Sure. The price is right, the staff are spot on, and the salsa is excellent. I'll just order something else next time. They do have an "American food" portion to their menu. May be worth a try...?
