Peppe's restaurant in Canutillo, Texas characterizes itself as a "New Mexican Food Restaurant" so naturally I just had to drive down to see what it is all about. Since I have lived in New Mexico for many years and dined in all the Mexican food restaurants in Las Cruces as well as others around the state, I have a sound point of reference as to what is good New Mex cuisine. Inside the restaurant is nicer than you might expect from viewing it from the outside. It is full of light, open, clean, and a comfortable place for dining. Upon entering I was greeted by a friendly gentleman and told to sit wherever I wanted. There are two dining areas, a smaller room near the entrance and a larger dining area through an archway. The seating is exclusively on banquet chairs with large tables. A waitress was at my table within a minute or two with a menu, a bowl of chips and a little glass flask with salsa. The service was very pleasant and efficient. Everybody working there seemed most friendly and accomodating. Wanting to sample a wide variety of their "New Mexican" food I ordered the #3 combo plate. It was prepared and on my table within eight to ten minutes. It came with Spanish rice, whole pinto beans, a rolled taco filled with ground beef, an enchilada, a chile relleno, and red chile con carne, A small dish of their coleslaw was served on the side. So, how did the food taste? Was it "New Mexican?" Was it good? High in quality New Mex food? Let's find out. The enchilada was covered in their red chile sauce with a bit of shredded cheese. Their rolled taco was sandwiched between the enchilada and the relleno and strangely enough it was sitting in the red sauce which made it impossible to pick up and eat with your hands. Strange way to serve a rolled taco??? The relleno had no sauce over it. The plate had the appearance of New Mex food, but what of the quality? To begin, the chips were very ordinary. They rate about a "C." The tomato based salsa was low on flavor and heat. Very mediocre salsa. Rate it a "C"...no better. The beans were a bit bland and quite undistinguished. Give them a C." The rice was the usual. Rate the rice a "C+." It was fluffy and prepared well. The rolled taco which had to be eaten with a knife and fork was somewhat tough and chewy with little corn flavor. The beef filling was not very well seasoned. Rate the rolled taco a "C-." Not something to look forward to. The enchilada was ok as far as it went but the red chile sauce...THE HALLMARK OF NEW MEX CUISINE...covering it was not good. The red chile sauce at Peppe's was really below the New Mex standard. Thus, the enchilada rated about a "C." The chile con carne had some properly sized and tender chunks of pork but again the red chile sauce had little flavor and was quite bland. Not up to the New Mexican standard. Rate the red chile con carne about a "C." Rate the red chile sauce a "C-." Not the stuff of legend. The relleno was plainly speaking not very good. The coating and the chile pepper itself were both soft and mushy with little flavor. Rate Peppe's chile relleno this day a "D" for poor. The coleslaw was vinegar based and not mayo based. It had therefore a little zing to it but at the end of the day it was nothing to write home about. Rate it a "C." So, all in all, I came away a little disappointed. Although I like the restaurant and found the people there nice and the service very good, I found all the food, while not bad, (relleno excepted) to be very pedestrian. I hate to say this given how pleasant the people at Peppe's are but I did not find one food item that was really good. None of this was a good version of New Mexican cuisine. Thus, rate the overall dining experience at Peppe's in Canutillo THREE AND A HALF STARS....not bad but not a great experience for for a full serve restaurant. Everything tasted today was "C" level food. The folks that pass out five star ratings I can only say that they must have a very limited perspective regarding New Mex cuisine. read more

It's in the end cap of a run down strip mall in Canutillo. What better place hide a treasure? In this case, the recipes of the legendary Griggs family that kept El Pasoans, Las Crucens, and all parts in between so well fed for nearly 100 years. After a doctor appointment at the University Medical Center, we went to Peppe's in Cantutillo for lunch. My wife had the three-taco plate (ground beef) with rice and beans, and I had the ground beef/carne asada burrito covered in queso. Everything was very good. Peppe's was recommended by our realtor right after we moved to El Paso as one of the best Mexican restaurants. Since then we've been eaten here several times. Every time we came here we enjoyed our meal with very good service. I wouldn't call this a fancy place. It's easily missed if you are paying attention driving down on Doniphan. Interior deco is sort of funky. There is a collection of organs (musical instrument) in the back room. Other displayed items seem to be personal in nature. Serving portion is not too big, but it's adequately satisfying. So, the price is very reasonable. You'll enjoy eating here. If you don't live on the west-side, it'll be a little trek to Peppe's. read more

Peppe's is a hole-in-the-wall little eatery just hidden inside a strip mall just off of Doniphan Dr. The food is very good with a notable speciality, a wonderful staff and reasonable prices. My son and I walked in around 7pm to get an evening meal. The restaurant was full, and the two dining rooms were buzzing. Several large tables had big family gatherings with obvious good cheer going on. We got a small table quickly and were served chips and salsa . We ordered a super nacho appetizer with half ground beef and half chicken meat on it. It was excellent, loaded with cheese , refried beans jalepeno peppers and meat. For an entree I ordered a combo #3 which included a chili Relleno, enchilada and rolled taco, along with rice , beans and shredded beef chili. The meal was good and had huge portions. The real highlight was the buttery and delicious chili relleno. My son ordered the 3 chili rellenos meal and he likewise had a great experience. The portions were large and we both left full and happy. The enchilada, rolled taco and other items were good, though not amazing. Their signature item was definitely the wonderful chili relleno! This place came highly recommended by a staff member at the El Paso Chihuahuas game that I attended back in late August. I gotta say, their service is impeccable, and the server had me try their sauces before I ordered since it was my first time there. He was very helpful in explaining New Mexican cuisine compared to traditional Mexican fare. Their QUESO is the best I've ever had in my life! Very fast service, especially for a quick weekday lunch break! Rosie was our waitress and greeted us with a smile. Our chips and salsa came right as we were seated and our drink order was taken promptly. Our food came out in just a few minutes and it was delicious. A friendly, family-staffed, unassuming place in a strip mall. Heavily visited by local families, with social distancing. I judge Mexican food by the basics (beans and rice) as well as the main dish. In all aspects Peppe's was exceptional. I can't tell you the last time I was served frijoles de olla, snd they were tasty without being over spiced. This place is amazing. The owner brought us out sample sauces so we could see which dishes we would like. It is small and has a family atmosphere as the owner and his family greets you and waits on you. The food comes out quick and is flavored great. It is a New Mexican style restaurant which is milder food, but the food is still flavored superb. If you are driving near El Paso, you need to try this place. My family who is much older than I have been coming here for years. They say the place is different, updated, new tile floors, different servers, but the food is just the same. The rolled tacos (flautas) are crisp and crunch just right then melt in your mouth. The picadillo soup is a true classic with green chile, beef cubes, and potato. The salsa is served in little jars for you to pour out at your leisure and the chips are thick and crunchy. Don't forget about dessert either, they now have mini sopapillas which are light, fluffy, and super cute! My family was right this hole in the wall place was worth a visit. read more

The place isn't anything special to look at - it's in an older building, not much in the way of signage, unless you're looking for it you would drive right by without a second thought. Inside you'll find a very clean, but basic, restaurant. The service and food make this place stand out - walk in and you're greeted immediately by several people, including the owner if he's there.
