I should start by saying that we arrived fairly late, I'd say within the last 40-50 minutes that they were open. We didn't realize that we arrived so late inside the restaurant as it took a while to park and make our way inside. When we arrived and made our way to the ordering/checkout stand to place our order, the guy just stared at us and didn't even say a word. No hello or anything. The vibe he gave us was very "go away," even though he didn't actually say that of course. We asked if it was OK if we order and he grunted out what we thought was a "yes." I have to say that I am incredibly disappointed with the fact that this is the type of place where you go up and order your food and then sit down. Seems like a missed opportunity by them not having table service. It felt very much like a concession stand that happened to be outside of a gift shop. When trying to figure out what to order, we had a few questions for the young kid running the register. The entire time he's barely speaking a word, so it was incredibly awkward and irritating. We order our food and my husband had to ask another question, which he either did not hear or just deliberately ignored. When our food comes out, it's delivered to the table and we tried to eat quickly so we could get out of their hair. For a restaurant that's tied to a tourist trap, we did not feel welcome at all. Now, I'm not an idiot, I know we showed up within the last hour of their day, but come on, this is a tourist spot. I feel like the staff should've been a little more gracious. If this had been my business, I would be appalled at how my customers were being treated, no matter what time they arrived. On another note, the older gentleman out in the parking lot that was driving the tram from the restaurant area to the parking lot area was an absolute delight. We did not even ride the tram and I can tell you that the man driving it really enjoys what he does. He was so polite and friendly, even when we declined the ride. Kudos to that guy for providing excellent customer service. Anyway, back to the restaurant. I ordered the shepherds pie, which was actually pretty good. It came out hot as blue blazes Dallas though lol, so I had to keep blowing on it to cool it off. If we do end up giving this restaurant another shot, I would be happy to order the same thing again. My husband was not a fan of his food though. I can't recall what he ordered. We both tried the baked beans and they were pretty good. Anyway, I'm tired as I'm writing this so it's probably going to come off a bit jumbled. Short story long, we will likely try this place again at some point in the future since we are local and also plan on checking out the Shepherd of the Hills activities. That said, customer service could use some improvement in the restaurant itself.

I've been gluten-free for 16 years, and this ranks in my top five worst restaurants in the country. Let's start with simply finding the place. It's poorly marked and difficult to locate. Ironically, "Hidden" Pines is very accurate. There is essentially one small sign that vaguely points you toward the basement of a building. Not exactly an inviting first impression. When you walk in, you're greeted by darkness, and not in a cozy, upscale way. The decor feels random and neglected. There was a large Valentine's heart displayed, but the rest of the decorations were leftover Christmas decor. It was the day before Valentine's Day. How does a restaurant that's been closed for weeks still have Christmas decorations hanging? Ornaments were hanging from the ceiling throughout the dining room. Birch branches with pine stuck in them were scattered around. No artwork. No cohesive theme. The tables and chairs look like they were pulled from a 90s cabin motel auction, mismatched salt and pepper shakers included. The smell when we entered was burnt cooking oil. Despite all that, the reviews are glowing, especially about gluten free options, so we tried to stay optimistic. We ordered the fried mushrooms as an appetizer. They were the only thing that was even remotely okay. I ordered the black bean burger on a gluten free bun. The patties were so thin they gave me two, and both were burnt. The onions were cut into thick, chunky pieces, and the entire sandwich was completely flavorless. The green beans were also flavorless. Some were fresh, others were clearly on the brink of going bad. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles. Two tiny pieces of chicken on regular sized waffles. The bottom waffle was overcooked and dry. The top waffle was raw inside. The chicken had no seasoning or flavor. The potatoes and eggs were also bland. There seems to be a consistent pattern here. For a restaurant charging over $150 for steaks, you would expect some level of refinement. Instead, the music was loud and inappropriate for what they're trying to present as a fancy dining experience. If guests are spending that kind of money, why subject them to burnt oil smells and blaring music? The kitchen area visible from the dining room had exposed wires coming from the ceiling, mismatched blue tile, and even a random curtain hanging in the back. It looked unfinished and poorly maintained. On our way out, I stopped in the restroom. Unsurprisingly, it was filthy. The toilet and surrounding area were dirty, and the overall condition matched the rest of the experience. I truly do not understand how this restaurant has such high ratings. I would encourage anyone reading five-star reviews to check how many other restaurants those reviewers have actually reviewed. Many seem to have only reviewed Hidden Pines. Branson has many dining options. Until serious changes are made in cleanliness, food quality, and overall management, I would strongly recommend steering clear.

These "half portions" filled the entire (largish) plate. I made a mental note to opt for this on any future visit, and that future arrived this week. Biscuits were country-good, and the gravy was substantial, not that watery stuff that is sometimes drizzled on Pillsbury-from-the-tube biscuits. If you're in Branson, head a little south of the dam to Hungry Hunter. Get there early, because this place is deservedly popular and there will probably be a wait. And the parking can be a bit contentious. It's not open on Monday or Tuesday.
