I went to this place last night. I have been there many times but it's been at least 10 or 12 years since I've been to this establishment. I have never had a bad meal at this restaurant and I kept my streak intact. I had the ribeye cooked, medium rare, and of course, the fried okra and the rolls before my meal and then I had cucumbers with onions, coleslaw, and the fried potatoes The steak was cooked to perfection was very good. The potatoes were the best I've ever had there they were cooked. Perfect. They were not burnt. They were brown. Perfect. They were delicious. Cucumbers were very good and so was a coleslaw okra everything was excellent. I will definitely go back the waiter was phenomenal. Very helpful. Very nice. Everybody was in a real good mood. "come in hungry...leave happy" this slogan for Lambert's Cafe in Ozark, Mo is absolutely correct. From the time you sit down until the time you leave there is fun on the menu. If you see the billboards for the restaurant it calls itself "The Home of the Throwed Rolls". This is because the delicious yeast dinner rolls are not brought to your table, a server calls out, from the front of the restaurant, "Who wants a roll" and as you raise your hand he throws them to you. Drinks are served in 32 ounce tumbler mugs. "Pass Arounds" are unlimited...this includes the rolls, apple butter or sorghum butter to put on the rolls, fried potatoes, macaroni and tomatoes and fried okra. The menu includes things like frog legs, chicken livers and gizzards and then southern basics like chicken fried steak, ham steak. Pork chops. I got "Something Southern" which is hog jowl (think bacon on steroids) and a large bowl of white beans with ham chunks. It comes with two sides, I chose cottage cheese and cucumbers and onions. All I can say is YUMM!!! There are three Lamberts...the original is in Sikeston, Mo (I have been there several times), this on in Ozark, Mo and then a third in Foley, Al. This place gets 5 starts because its an experience. Where else do you have to catch your appetizers as they're thrown across the room? The only thing is, they should hire more baseball players so more of them get caught, lol. I loved the service and the home-cooked food. The roving servers offering sides were cool. The okra was actually good [normally I won't eat it]. DEFINITELY get the apple butter for your rolls. It was SO GOOD but the gift shop was sold out . If you've never been to Lambert's before, you definitely must try it! This is the home of the throwed rolls - where literally they toss dinner rolls to you. You order your meal but will receive complementary side items that are served by wait staff that come around and offer each item at your table. The items are traditional, southern dishes, like fried potatoes with onions or macaroni and tomatoes or fried okra or black beans or apple butter for your rolls. The beverages are served in large 32 ounce cups and the portion sizes of the meals are quite large. Lived in Missouri forever and ashamed I have never been to lamberts until now. We made it a mission to go! We stopped by here even after we had eaten dinner to order more food to get the experience! It's definitely an experience. The restaurant is covered from wall to wall and the energy is high! The staff was friendly and conversational even though they were busy. I love the throwing and catching bread but they run out real fast. The sides are also solid that they come around with for free. Then they sell you dessert afterwards which I had to buy all of them . I've always heard of Lambert's Cafe and it wasn't until I was grown that I visited. This place reminds you of a well established country restaurant with hints of Cracker Barrel. Home of the flying roll, which was fun to be apart of but honestly the rolls are massive and thick, so don't eat too many. I split the ribs with my wife and to my surprise, the ribs were a little better and much bigger than I expected. The rest of the sides were decent. Service was okay, but they can get a little rushed with the order due to the high volume of customers. Ambiance is very country, big booths, big portions, family atmosphere. Such a great and definitely unique dining experience. Visiting from NY it was so cool to experience catching the "flying hot buns" lol! The shared pass arounds were also so different and not something you get to experience in most restaurants. I first went to this Lambert's location in 1994. I have so many family memories here, my heart skipped a beat pulling in the parking lot. It was time to get back to those rolls. Lambert's Café is the home of the throwed roll. These rolls are warm and absolutely melt in your mouth. The warm sorghum on the roll makes it even better. They bake hundreds and hundreds of fresh rolls each day! Lambert's make getting these rolls all part of the fun. I remember portions at Lamberts being large and they still are. If you are on a road trip make sure you have room for leftovers in your cooler. Here you order a meal and staff walk around with complimentary pass arounds that are all you can eat. I am a sucker for this fried okra and potatoes with onion. Our favorites are salads, chicken tenders, chicken wings, meatloaf, sweet potato fries and baked chicken. Even with a 30-minute wait, this place was definitely worth it! It looked super packed when we arrived, but the wait honestly didn't feel long at all. The food came out quickly, which was a plus. Our waiter wasn't the most outgoing, she was more straight to the point, but the service was still good. When in the area, my mother always requests that we make a special stop at Lambert's Cafe in the Ozark or "home of the throwed rolls". We arrived right at opening time and there was already a line of people waiting to get in on the patio outside. We were in the middle of the line but we seated promptly at a booth in the dining area. The restaurant is decorated with lots of memorabilia including signs, pictures, photos and license plates. There is lots of visual stimuli inside. The employees are dressed in costume and are extremely friendly when they interact with you. They are known for their rolls that are baked fresh and are very soft and buttery. Some interesting facts, they averaged baking 520 dozen rolls per day, for a grand total of 2,246,400 individual rolls. The best part is you call for a roll and the bread boy will throw the roll to you and you have to catch it. I always special request their apple butter because that is my favorite spread for the roll. They also bring around sorghum molasses. When you order from their massive menu, you get to experience their pass around sides where servers stop by your table and bring unlimited helpings of macaroni and tomatoes, fried potatoes and onions, fried okra and black-eyed peas. I ordered the chicken with green beans and collard greens. I asked for an au jus sauce for the chicken which they accommodated. Other people in our party ordered the chicken fried steak, one with gravy and one without with carrots, peaches, green beans and mashed potatoes. The serving sizes are humongous and with all you can eat pass around sides, you will never leave hungry. There were a lot of leftovers. Solid five stars here. It's unique with the thrown rolls and it's nostalgic with the decor but the food is absolutely delicious, portions are HUGE and service was friendly and fast! I feel like they're doing everything right here. I had the country fried steak served with two sides of my choice (candied yams and collard greens) with a generous scoop of mashed potatoes on top of the steak smothered in white gravy. I haven't had country fried steak in a long time and it was sooo good. Reminded me of my southern grandma's Sunday dinners. Hubs got the pot roast and loved it. He inhaled it with his sides. We were in Branson last week and stopped at Lambert's for dinner. A member of our group had been to Lambert's before so we had a big breakfast and skipped lunch because we knew lots of food. I ordered chicken and dumpling with green beans and sweet potatoes. Before ordering we were offered hot, fresh rolls (tossed to you or for the less adventurous handed to you) and fried okra (just put a paper towel down for them). After our food arrived we were offered additional "pass arounds" like black eyed peas, fried potatoes and macaroni and tomatoes. Did I mention a continued flow of big, hot yeast rolls? All of our food was hot, fresh and nicely seasoned and service was fast and efficient ( I can't remember the name of the young lady who served us). Lamberts is an absolute must anytime you are in the area! It is one of the funnest and delicious places to go. We arrived about 11:30 on a Saturday and were able to get right in, but be warned, that isn't always the case. They have a line waiting inside and out any later and every day! The staff are always smiling and pleasant. The food is always hot and delicious! The first thing they are know for are the rolls...they throw them to you! Be ready to catch hot, fluffy rolls when they come out. You just raise your hands and they will throw it right to you. Then there are the pass around...amazing! Fried okra, fried potatoes and onions (favorite), macaroni and tomatoes, sorghum, apple butter, and blackeyed peas. They come around with the pass around throughout your whole meal and you can get as much as you want! Now for the main course, there are so many options. This day we got the hog jowl with white beans and sweet potatoes, the chicken wings with white beans and coleslaw, and a kids chicken tenders with fries and mashed potatoes. The portions are huge and always have left overs. It is a very busy place, lots of staff moving, but they are very good at working around and not being in anyone's way. It is a very organized chaos (in a great way)! It does get a little loud, but that is part of the experience and fun. I liked how it was decorated. While the restaurant is over 80 years old it didn't feel old and dirty. I didn't use the restroom but my husband did and said the men's room was clean. The wait staff know what they are talking about. If you have questions they have suggestions and answers to your questions. The ambiance here reminds me of Cracker Barrel. It's a question to wonder which came first? Or should I say that CB copied off of Lambert's. That is what I'm feeling. The food here is fantastic. It's good country home cooking. I'm normally not a fan of fried okra, except for here. I could make a meal of them if I wanted to, they are very delicious. Meatloaf and burgers are great. All the sides are amazing. The roast beef a little bit salty, but hey that is ok. The drinks come in a "holy cow that is a very large drink" size. If you leave thirsty I think you did something wrong. The whole roll throwing and catching experience, is just plane fun! To add to that the rolls are delicious! Especially with honey and butter. My family just enjoys attempting to catch the rolls and chowing down on them. As for pricing the meals here are very reasonable. They totally could jack up their prices but thankfully they have not. Home cooking (mostly). You may have a wait but they're very upfront about the wait time and have TWO shops to explore (there are several other shops a short walk). The staff is amazing! Throwing rolls at you, bringing around the free (free with entree or you could pay and only eats the sides. They're great! Fried okra, skillet taters, black eyed peas, tomatoes with pasta and of course the rolls!! You can add a bit of molasses to those rolls too! Yummy!! I'm kind of hooked on the chicken with dumplings.... The chicken is flavorful and oh so tender and the giant slabs of dumplings are perfect!! They put all the dumplings on top and then LOTS of chicken on the bottom. Oh my and the cucumber salad is simply divine!! We've also had the pot roast... stellar!! Cannot recommend the smothered hamburger steak (comes to them premade - heat and serve style - but don't worry - there are so many other great options)! If you like room temperature fried chicken that is dry because it was cooked earlier and sitting in a hotbox, and fried in old grease, this is the place to get it. Kraut and sausage, nothing but a bowl of kraut with a 3.5" sausage link set on top, not even cooked along with the bland tasting kraut. Years ago they consistently passed around the pass arounds. The last several times we had to ask for every pass around even after getting your meal, otherwise you will eat you meal and never see any, or you may be lucky and see one pass around. The foof quality has went way day hill from the way it used to be, and we have been going for 15+ years. It has came to the point we will not longer be going. The food has absolutely no flavor anymore, compared to years ago, its just average cooked food nothing special at all.
