I want to love this cafe, really I do. The food is great and the setting is perfect. But anytime I go in there, they ignore me, are condescending and dismissive towards me. I try my best to be polite and the last 5 times I've been there I always tip $10 hoping it'd help eventually. But the wait staff just gets more and more dismissive and bothered by my even breathing. They are always warm and welcoming, and very understanding when the ambulance catches a call and has to quickly leave. It's a great place to grab a quick bite when you work 36 or 48 hour shifts. For a small town restaurant - these folks do pretty good. Quite the wide range of items to choose from. Sandwiches, burgers, and all sorts of plates dinner options. Here's what we tried: - Buffalo fries: Never have seen these on a menu - fries with a heavy dose of Frank's Red Hot, melted cheese, fried chicken pieces and green onions. I'd easily get this again, as it was an unusual good combo! Meatloaf: hey, the meatloaf was a very good meatloaf. Trust me, it tastes better than it looks.....it was quite good...just could use a better topper sauce. Gizzards: a great tasting fry exterior. This place cooked them nicely. So many places over cook them - but not this place. Sides: they're all generally ok level of taste. Salt and pepper is on the table for a reason. You'll need to use it on the sides. My wife and I have driven past this restaurant for years, always saying we should stop there. Today we did. It is quaint on the inside and the staff greet everyone with friendly hometown charm. TERRIBLE....Had their Thanksgiving special, the Turkey was dried out and slivers of turkey, The stuffing looked like dry pet poop, NO taste and not moist a bit. Server said its all like that and nothing they can do. On duty manager said they cannot give any credit for the food. That means they have terrible ownership. We are local and will never come back, you can be sure we will be telling all we work with and come across to NOT go to the gateway. We saw other being served the same DRY tasteless food. First off this isn't the old Gateway Cafe that Imogene Wilson ran many years ago. I sure there are still some people out there that remember the Old Gateway, but time goes on. Side salad rated an ok, Fried Shrimp a good, corn well, what can you say for canned corn and he choose Onion Rings (up charge) not fries. My chicken sandwich was very good and I cut the chicken in half and now have lunch for work. Fries were fries. Haven't been to this place in a long time they remodeled it. On my way to the lake decided to stop by for breakfast. The prices have gone up which they've gone up everywhere but man they really went up here. I could handle that $15 breakfast if it was good. I had biscuits and gravy. The gravy was cold and tasted like Glue. Sausage were burnt on one side and turned over but was also very cold. They brought my husband some new sausage but literally was the same. When we first walked in the hostess was really rude, just threw the menu's and silverware on the table.. Finally came back to ask what we wanted to drink, it took awhile but she came back with our water.. Then they wouldn't make my grandson a grilled cheese (because it was breakfast time and that was considered lunch.) I ordered pancakes, they were ok. First and last time coming to this business! If you can't have starchy food, this is definitely not the place to go. The platters come with a roll, a potato, side salad, and vegetable of the day, which was corn today. So essentially, you pay nearly $14 for a bit of fried catfish and a side salad. I ordered the special, which was shrimp skewers, which also came with a side salad, rice and broccoli. At first, they said I could sub extra broccoli for the rice, but then came back and said you couldn't substitute anything. Again, essentially $14 for two shrimp skewers and a side salad. We opted to ask for the check for the two side salads and go elsewhere for an actual meal that we could eat. On a good note, they decided not to charge us for the side salads. Since the coronavirus, everything has been shut down. Gateway was still open two days a week for takeout only. State released part of the restrictions and gateway opened their doors! This is the first restaurant we ate at since the Shelter-in-place. They have remodeled and food is excellent as always! I recommend this restaurant to anyone! read more

We stopped for lunch on the way to Springfield. We were told to seat ourselves. Our waitress came over right away and asked for our drink order and gave us menus. My dad ordered the daily special which was a pork chop, mashed potatoes and corn that day. My daughter and I both ordered the grilled chicken salad. My dad said his pork chop was excellent, but the mashed potatoes tasted like boxed potatoes. He was happy with the corn. We were happy with our salads. They were fresh and loaded.
