While touring the downtown Square one day we noticed Civil Kitchen & thought it looked interesting so we decided next time in town we'd stop in for Dinner, so weeks later we did. We stopped in on a Thursday night & surprisingly the place was almost empty for whatever reason. We were greeted immediately by our server, Allie T, who did an excellent job of taking care of us & gave us some nice recommendations. We ordered the Seafood Beignets for an appetizer & the Tuna Poke as well as the Panko Fish Sandwich for the main course. Everything arrived in short order & couldn't have been better. The atmosphere was nice & the prices were more than fair ( 1 appetizer, 3 Cocktails & 2 Entrees for $75.48 ) I highly recommend Civil Kitchen & we look forward to coming back. read more

I'd describe my experience at Civil Kitchen as mediocre. The hostess greeted me but was somewhat unfriendly, leaving me at my table without a word, where I waited for 5-10 minutes without any service, even though the restaurant was not even close to half full. My server was friendly and professional, however. I ordered the fish tacos. The fish was crunchy and delicious, but there was very little in each taco, with each piece only running about 2/3 the length of the small tortilla. The tacos, despite their many toppings, tasted rather flat, although the slaw was fresh. One more thing: The limes that came with my drink and tacos were drying out and faded. I love this place when it's good, but the question is, "When is it good"? So more like 3 1/2 stars. I really want to like this place consistently, because when they get it right, it's right. The food has a unique spin, comes out hot and fresh, and feels worth the little extra you expect to pay at a downtown restaurant. The problem is figuring out which version of the place you're going to get when you walk through the door. The food and service are both a bit of a gamble. On a good night, you get a great meal and a server and bartender who knows their stuff and makes the whole experience enjoyable. On a bad night, you're dealing with cold food, smaller portions, poorly made drinks, and service that ranges from inexperienced to seemingly overwhelmed or just not all that interested in checking on their tables. One thing they consistently get right is the atmosphere. On a nice evening, the two large patios on the square are a great place to sit outside and take in the downtown scene. That's what makes this place frustrating. It has all the ingredients to be a regular favorite, and some nights it absolutely delivers. Other nights, you're left wondering what happened and what you just paid for. We were walking around downtown and decided to try this place. It was a nice day and we sat out on the patio. Sitting out on the patio allows for a great view of downtown. Our server, Isabel was very nice and we appreciated her service. Also, Rey was sweet as well. We ordered the chicken sandwich and the pork belly tacos. The chicken sandwich is big, I had to take out one of the strips of chicken since it made the sandwich huge. The chicken was good, the fries didn't taste fresh, almost stale-ish. This might be the best thing I've put in my face for a long time m. Lordy, it was so good, it about makes me want to cry. First off, Emery our server was spectacular. He was spot on when I couldn't decide what to order and to surprise me. I got a small pecan, apple salad with goat cheese and a balsamic vinaigrette and the Seoul Food Chicken sandwich. I have never had chicken so tender and juicy and the slaw was perfect. The salad was equally amazing. The goat cheese and candied pecans, my mouth is watering just thinking of it. My son ordered the Brussel sprouts and chicken and waffles. Both off the hook. I should have walked through the whole place. It was architecturally interesting. The vibe was good, seating comfortable and you could catch the game, but there were not an overwhelming amount of TVs. If in Springfield, do not miss out on this local gem! read more

I really wanted to like this place because of all the hype and reviews I had heard.. it's not worth my money, the burgers were very bland and mid, the fries were not great and it's hard to mess up fries. But the saddest part of all was the Mac and cheese! I love Mac and cheese and was expecting flavor... nope, I got a good taste of Smokey air and nothing else. Couldn't even taste the cheese. This place. I can't visit Springfield and not eat here. The food is wonderful, creative combinations, great ingredients, and SPOT-ON preparation!! Also I feel this is very reasonably priced too! Delicious cocktails for $10. Most of the great menu items are well under $20. Kids menu is a little pricey at $10pee, but hard to complain too much. I had the BBQ pork belly tonight at it was CRAZY good. Super meaty, fatty pork belly so tender I didn't use the knife at all. Laying on a bed of sweet potato hash that was the perfect sweet compliment to the belly. My wife had the Blue Goat Burger. Which was substantial and delicious. Her side of choice was the sweet potato waffle fries, which came with a little sugary coating that I would've requested they hold, but that's just me. We came to Civil on our way to Branson. The ambience is excellent, super hipster. Waitress was kind and was quick. Food was mediocre. The menu looks phenomenal but the actual presentation was a disappointment. We started with the truffle fries. The flavors together were great but there was no adhesive, ie a sticky cheese to keep the toppings on the fries. We also ordered the feta dip which seemed frozen. It was not a dip it was a blob like frozen butter. I also tried the date n'apple salad. The dressing just did not pair well with the toppings. In my opinion, the dressing completely ruined the salad. I couldn't even eat it. We will not return. read more

My husband ordered an old fashioned, as he does in almost every restaurant. Waitress asked what kind of bourbon, he said Buffalo Trace. We also ordered food. It was not a great old fashioned, had an orange slice (not peel) no cherry & ice cubes. It was $10 on the menu. We got the bill & it was $13.50 plus $2.50 for old fashioned. We asked about the charge, waitress said you ordered Buffalo Trace, so you were charged for the bourbon & then additional for the old fashioned. He told her he ordered an old fashioned, the bill also said top shelf. Anyone who knows bourbon knows Buffalo Trace is good but not labeled top shelf. Waitress said she would adjust the bill, then the bartender came to our table & justified the charge. We disagreed with her, she said the manager would be over. The manager stuck to the $16 charge for the old fashioned & said "I know it seems scammy, but that is how we do it". No one said it was scammy but him. It was incorrect & we were unhappy & he knew it. We left, proceeded to our next bar hop destination. My husband ordered an old fashioned, it was $8 with Buffalo Trace, had an orange peel, big ice cube & luxardo cherry. Moral of this story is Civil Kitchen does not how to make an old fashioned, they over charge for it & they do not resolve conflict. We asked the last person we spoke to for adjustment, not free, just removal of the up charge, so that would have made the drink $13.50. Sorry Civil Kitchen, we love your food & your outside patio, but service is awful. We usually go there before events at MSU & will not be back. I wondered why we got a table so easily at 6:30 on a Saturday night. I would say customer satisfaction is driving people away. They lost a customer over a principal of how they charge for drinks. My husband even explained this was about a $6 up charge to a $10 drink. The owner of this restaurant needs to know what is happening in & fix it or it will be closing. It had a lot of empty tables on a Saturday night with beautiful weather. Treat customers right & they will come back. read more

Very disappointed. 3rd time here. I believe last 2 times- over 2 years ago were both a 5. Previously loved the chicken and waffles but this time fry cook very heavy handed- chicken cooked to death. Had to send it back. Blue cheese goat burger not much better. Bacon cooked so hard I thought I was eating a toothpick in the middle of it. Coming home from Branson, went to church in Springfield and I was up for a place we haven't tried. I did some searching and found the Civil Kitchen had some good reviews. I read my wife some of the plates and she was good with it. On the drive, the part of town we were going through didn't look great. Springfield is an interesting city, it is rough around the edges, but places I've been to seem to be clean and maintained, anyways, back to the review. The restaurant is in an old building and they went along with it having a rustic atmosphere. I would say when eating here, bring a good sized appetite. We had the onion ring stack appetizer, it was 2 stacks of onion rings, they were outstanding. My wife had the fish tacos. She gave that dish her highest rating of YUMMY. I had a chicken sandwich with coleslaw. It was A+. It was 2 small breastfeeding pieces fried with cheese, honey mustard, onion and tomato. The side of coleslaw was an Asian style, also A+. Again, bring an appetite as I couldn't finish it. The price per portion ratio is very good. The staff are nice and our waiter, I wish I remembered his name, was very good at top off waters and iced tea and checking on us regularly. Short story long, if in Springfield for lunch or dinner, check it out, you will be pleased. The liquor selection is also very good. Being on the road as we were, I didn't imbibe. We sat outside on their patio (super easy, good spacing between tables to help with my dog) and was served quickly and thoughtfully.
