I am a GIANT fan of the Whistle Stop. Everything here is fresh and delicious. The bread is homemade and they make a "Bumpy" cake in house that is more like Mountain Cake! I normally think of Whistle Stop when I am thinking about Sunday breakfast / brunch. Everything is GREAT! The Cinnamon Roll French Toast, Pancakes, Omelettes, and pretty much everything is fresh, made from scratch, and delicious!! They make a Breakfast Pita that is one of my favorite things on earth. Oh, and the bread is made from scratch in the restaurant bakery. Just so good!!! It is important to note that, while The Whistle Stop is one of my go to breakfast spots, it really is a very good place to catch lunch as well. The BLT and Club are outstanding and I have yet to have a bowl of soup that wasn't top notch. The other thing great about this place is that, unlike most Birmingham eateries, parking is plentiful and you usually wont have to wait, even on a Sunday, more than 20 minutes. Unfortunately I have to rate this based on my experience with check in. I never made it into the restaurant and will update my review when/if I do. I came in around 11:30am on a Sunday. They looked fairly busy. I checked in and they took my name for 2 people. They said, 5-10 minutes wait. I waited and saw several people check in after me. After about 10-15 minutes, I see them call the person that came in after me with the same amount of party as me. I went up to the desk and asked what the situation was to the hostess and she said that she called my name and no one came forward. It doesn't make sense as I was standing right there. She never called my name and she said she would be calling us next. She calls 2 four tops after that situation. She could have made it right and just called us for the 4 top. I waited about 10 more minutes and got so angry as I saw the 2 person table that went ahead of me sipping on my OJ. I waited another 5 minutes and then left. I think she lied and made a mistake and she called the person after me. Maybe I'll give it another try when I cool down. read more

One of my favorite breakfast places!! The cinnamon swirl pancakes are amazing. Hippie omelet is also a personal favorite. Large menu, cute atmosphere, highly recommend! Expect a wait though if you go during a busy time (brunch time on weekends). read more

I stopped into this teeny tiny place with my folks for a Saturday morning breakfast. When I say tiny, I do mean it (apparently they are expanding into the space next door, which is great for them), and it is definitely "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" while driving by. One thing to note: If you are not a complete party, you will NOT be seated. No ifs, ands or buts, and no amount of whining will change it (I'm looking at you, pack of fratboys). This joint is too small right now to have people taking up real estate while waiting for their companions. Service was fast and very friendly. They started off leaving a carafe of water at the table, which is a HUGE plus for me, since I can drink 4-5 glasses of water during a meal. While I was bummed that they were out of the lemon cream pancakes, I went with a half order of the french toast with bacon. My folks split a skillet, and we got a side of biscuits and gravy to share amongst ourselves. My folks raved about the potatoes in their skillet, and the portion size was plenty to satisfy both of them. The biscuits and gravy were "meh", unfortunately, because my big behind does love good biscuits and gravy. The bacon was a bit chewy and floppy for my taste. The french toast was fine, but let me tell you what put it over the top: The jam. This joint has housemade (or they buy it homemade, not sure) jams that will blow your socks off. I smeared some raspberry jam on the french toast and it was amazing. I'd go back just for the jam. They need to bottle that stuff and sell it! read more

Based on a friend's recommendation I decided to roll on into the Whistle Stop Cafe and see what the ruckus was all about. Though it's tucked away in the Depotville section of Birmingham near the train station, this cafe is obviously not a secret. Every seat was filled in the restaurant on this Wednesday morning except for one seat at the bar. The restaurant is bright and clean and has the bustle of a diner but with a little more class. I guess there is another section to the restaurant but I didn't wander back that far. The breakfast was fairly standard consisting of eggs, breakfast meat, potatoes, omelets, pancakes and french toast. I had the eggs, potatoes and toast. All were cooked excellently and were very tasty. The price was not bad either. If you're in Birmingham and want breakfast follow the train tracks to the Whistle Stop. read more

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the whistle stop. The eye catching establishment gets an A plus in every aspect! The atmosphere is welcoming and open; simply put it's esthetically pleasing. They have a bar seating and a patio when it's warm outside. The servers are not only friendly but very efficient workers. Although, it can get busy they maintain a pleasant attitude! The food is phenomenal! They have a variety of selections to satisfy your cravings and offer good sized portions. It has the potential to be our favorite local place. But there's room to improve. Remodel is beautiful. Everything is in order. I hope they keep it clean and nice. But it doesn't seem like attention to detail is enforced there. Their prices are quite high if the kitchen isn't going to make the food with care. Example: If I go through the effort to order my BLT with "extra crispy" bacon, and I'm served room temp, pre cooked from this morning bacon, with zero regard for my order request, then that's a problem. And it's a big turnoff to be arriving and about to sit down, only to see crumbs all over the booth seat of the half booth/table. Then with service, inconsistent. We went twice and got two different servers. The first time we went, the young lady who served us was knowledgeable, polite, positive, very kind and an excellent listener. And unfortunately, the outstanding service we received the first time didn't apply with our second server. She was rude, lacked manners, impatient, very gruff/rough lady. When the food isn't made correctly shouldn't the server apologize, say they'll be right back, and make it right? She took the food saying nothing to us and stomped off. When she brought it back, she also never apologized. We didn't blame the server; we assume the kitchen rushed it and didn't follow the request with the order. But the server is responsible for providing good service, and that didn't happen. read more

I've been to the Whistle Stop many times, always with good service and good food. I am a sucker for a good Maurice Salad and although having a mediocre-at-best Maurice last time I was there, I decided to give it another shot. Meh. Bland iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes (?!), black olives (?!) and "Hudson's" dressing was ok, actually a little egg-y to me. Pickles were perfect, but would have loved them chopped and tossed into the salad. My favorite part was the characters who come in there. Sit at the counter and enjoy the show - but pass on the Maurice :). BTW, if you can sit at the counter and NOT order one of their desserts - you have better will power than most! read more

The remodel of this diner is so aesthetically pleasing! The food was fantastic. The service was a little slow, however it was clearly understaffed and the servers were doing their best running around to help their handful of tables. I love reading the reviews from others on places like the Whistle Stop. Make no mistake, this is not a Michelin Five Star Restaurant, it's a neighborhood joint that has great fresh breakfast and sandwiches...breads, pies and sweet rolls are all homemade. Staff is always pleasant and efficient. If your coming on the weekend, be prepared to have a short wait and make sure everyone is there at the same time. Because space is limited, seating is at a premium so be courteous to other patrons and to the staff who is trying to get people in and out to keep the wait to a minimum. If you don't like it try OPH or Toast....oh wait, they have the same policy. Enjoy the Whistle Stop, and don't forget to take home some homemade pie, just leave me a slice of Coconut Cream please. read more

Friendly service . Very busy at lunch time. They have fresh turkey if you want a turkey sandwich on homemade bread. Very good. The Amtrak is a turkey Reuben ; however, They use deli turkey instead of the fresh turkey so ask. I think the prices are a bit high , but I guess it's just Birmingham prices. In another city would be less for same quality . In the 70's they were famous for their desserts. Not the same as it was, but still good. Just not great anymore. read more

Our absolute favorite diner anywhere. We loved it before the renovation, when it was a bit shabby (charmingly so) and cramped, because of the food and the people. The reno has taken this restaurant to a new level - it is now exactly what Birmingham/Bloomfield had been missing. The Whistle Stop Birmingham would be a draw for breakfast/brunch/lunch anywhere: the NY Hudson Valley, the Upper West Side, Harbor Springs, Chicago Gold Coast. The food is not fancy but homey and good quality. Such a great atmosphere -- I recommend you go with your family or alone while reading the day's news. Either way, you will return. read more

Went to WS today for the first time since they reopened. EXCELLENT, I dare say the best omlete I've had in a long while. Had the Hippie with Jack cheese cooked easy, Zimmerman's whole grain toast and fresh blueberry jam. Hash browns were spot on, crunchy on the outside, perfect on the inside. Loved it!! First, as is true with all Coneys (I swear they meet to discuss this) the coffee is terrible. That is not unique to Whistle Stop but it holds true. And when you charge $2.49 for a cup you would hope it wouldn't be swill...but it is. As anyone who tries to not "eat white" or low carb options are low in a restaurant. So I ordered the special ($5.79 I think) and I asked to get tomatoes instead of toast - nope. So I just get eggs and meat - hold the other stuff. It tasted good (I mean it was scrambled eggs and bacon - can't get much easier. ) I get the bill and instead of just seeing the special with coffee. I see a charge for each egg and a side of bacon. I walked out of there with. $10 check. Seriously it was that much effort to NOT toast some bread and NOT grill some potatoes that you had to charge me like that? So word to the wise, though I hate to say it...If you don't want the toast or potatoes order it anyway and leave it. read more

As I've stated before, a true test of a breakfast spot is their pancakes. Anyone can cook an egg; anyone can burn some potatoes. My cat has fried up some turkey sausages and use a meat thermometer. Pancakes, not so easy, people! Pancakes are a fine art, seriously. Whistle Stop makes glorious pancakes and for that, I will go there often. They are not as fancy as your Toast, Fly Traps or even Breakfast Club, but their menu is nothing to scoff at. I love that the Stop has an affordable price range being a longstanding business in Birmingham. Granted, it's off the beaten path, but I'm still appreciative. I only drop the one star, because they don't have completely outrageous french toast. The Cinnamon Roll french toast is quite tasty and not over-the-top. I mean, really who needs a bunch of extra sugar and gloriousness [other than me, but I really don't]? Consistently good breakfast food (never eaten there for lunch) with some slightly out of the ordinary options like banana pancakes, breakfast egg rolls, etc. I love the potato pancakes. I've been to both and the pleasant ridge one is by far much better!
