Usually quicker on weekdays but it depends on the day. However, if you are looking for a relaxing low-key breakfast it is the best in Birmingham. The cinnamon swirl pancakes are the best Ive ever had, and every dish Ive tried from omelets to the specials have been phenomenal! The lunch options like the California Clubs or the massive Maurice salad are also delicious. They have breakfast cocktails and very reasonably priced beer. The portion sizes are huge! I have never left hungry or disappointed. The owners are very personable and kind, as are all the servers I've had. Nicole, Ava, Katie, Virginia and Jim are all wonderful, as are the rest of the staff... I can't remember everyone's name! Coney island style restaurant with higher prices. Same quality food as Kirby's or National Coney Island. I came here on a Sunday around 11:30am. About a 20 minute wait for me and a guest. Lots of free parking in the lot behind the diner which is a plus. Service was friendly but I didn't enjoy my food. I ordered a veggie egg white omelette with hashbrowns and an ice tea. My iced tea was the best part of the meal. The omelette was over cooked, rubbery, and unseasoned. It tasted very bland even after seasoning it with salt and pepper. I even tried adding hot sauce and that didn't help...and I'm not the one to add hot sauce to food except tacos. The hash browns weren't cooked all the way through...and some were raw inside. Some of them were crispy but the ones underneath were not cooked. I really didn't want to eat anymore after taking a couple bites. I took a picture of my Omelet when it arrived but don't let it fool you...it looked much better than it tasted. I won't be returning here again. Overpriced for the quality of food. You'll have better luck going to a chain Coney Island with tastier food and cheaper prices. read more

First time back since the remodel. It is so nice inside now and they have outdoor seating too! The food is amazing. I got the Eton Breakfast which is just the standard bacon/eggs/ toast but then you can pick hash browns or Parmesan grits and I went for the grits and they blew my mind how good they were. Bacon was cooked perfectly, toast options have fun artisanal breads rather than the sad white/wheat/rye choices at most breakfast places. I got the sesame semolina toast and it was so good. They also make their own jam and spreading the mixed berry on my last piece of toast was a perfect cherry on top of an amazing meal. Will be back soon to try some of the other fun choices on the menu. I bet the lines here are ridiculous on the weekends. I went on a Wednesday at 10am and it was pretty full then too. read more

I really wanted breakfast so I popped in here. Nice place. Been there before. I think the food has improved. I believe I thought it was just ok last time. I got the engineer. It's a big breakfast I admit. 3 eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, hashbrowns and toast. It took me a while to decide because at first glance I got sticker shock. Don't even bother looking at the menu on yelp. It's totally wrong. Different stuff and the actual prices are almost double. I know things are expensive everywhere but damn. $17.99 was a lot even for a big breakfast. I wanted a side of gravy to spoon on top because I have some country fried roots. That was an extra $3. They give you to much. Even for a couple biscuits. I didn't even use half. Maybe scale that back and lower the price. There were a lot of up charges on the menu. But the menu was well written and had a lot of tasty sounding items. I could tell they make their own jam. I'm so sorry but the strawberry wasn't very good. Wasn't sweet. Took me a minute to wrap my head around it. My waitress was very nice. She offered me something else. I declined. I know it's breakfast but I had a large puddle of oil in my plate. Bit much. Service was good. Place was clean. Nice patio. I'll go back but not often. It's just too pricey for that kind of food. I live across the street from whistle stop diner so my boyfriend and I go there all the time. In terms of the ambiance, I would say it is super cute and very comfortable space. Very well decorated and modern, they also have outdoor seating in the summer. But in terms of the food, it isn't super creative or tasty. Honestly, just sort of regular diner food and no stand outs. The coffee though is Great lakes coffee and it is super good. They will also give you a cup to go if you ask for it! The service is always really quick and everyone there is really nice. Another thing to note during popular meal times it is super busy! So if you are coming during breakfast time, be expected to wait about 30 minutes. An absolute favorite along with any of the pancakes. The best neighborhood spot for breakfast/brunch and the new renovations have done wonders! We live a walking distance from this place, but until last Saturday we never had a chance to try it. First, I was really surprised how tiny this place is inside. At about 11 a.m. on Saturday morning there was a little line, but we were sited after only 10 minutes wait. The service was good, always available if needed with plenty of coffee refills. I hate when they give you food and then disappear for long time without giving you more coffee. Not the case here. I went with their special pancake option, cinnamon roll, and hubby went with the regular basic breakfast: egg, sausage, toast and pancakes. It took really a long time to get our food, so be prepared for that. Once we finally got our plates, we dug in and were very happy, everything was very good. My pancakes were fluffy and crunchy from the cinnamon swirl and topped with delicious icing. My hubby also enjoyed his breakfast, plus they have a homemade bread, which I want to try next time. He went with the rye option that does include caraway seeds, but I saw on other tables a big slices of bread, which I assume was their homemade. It looked delicious, so I have to give it a try next time. It's a little more expensive than similar places, I would say you have to pay about $2-$3 more for a plate, so it's not that bad considering the amount of food and taste. My husband and I will forever be regulars at the ol' whistle stop. We started going to the Pleasant Ridge location until they redid Birmingham which was closer to our house. We come get breakfast here at least once a week and it's our favorite spot. I recommend it to everyone! While they can be wildly busy with a line out the door, I promise you it's worth it. The only time we haven't waited was due to time restraints, not impatience. We're also bar people so we'll snag a spot at the bar and it's first come first serve with phenomenal service! Whistle stop Birmingham is good but I still like the Pleasant Ridge location more.This Sunday I chose The Engineer it's a huge breakfast with 3 eggs, 2 ham, 2 bacon, 2 sausage, potatoes and some great home made toast. My eggs were cooked perfectly the bacon was nice and crispy the sausage was good and they give you a bunch of ham and potatoes. If your hungry this is the breakfast for you. I sat at the counter and service was friendly and fast, with lots of refills on your coffee. Yea the place fills up on the weekends for breakfast but it looked like most people were waiting no more than 10 minutes. Whistle stop is very consistent and puts out a quality product, with some tasty choices. If your in Birmingham and looking for breakfast give the Whistle stop a try it's a solid breakfast choice. read more
