I've heard about Whistle Stop Diner and wanted to try this place out. While on my way to the cat rescue to donate cat food, I decided that since this was in the area, I would grab a bite and check the place out. There's limited parking but it's not terribly impossible to get a spot. I walked inside and the place was jamming! Patio was full, families waiting outside, and the windows open. Since it was just me, I was able to get seated at a two top, unfortunately right in the middle of the place. There was bar seating, but I wasn't feeling it this time, so two top table it was. The menu has a great selection of breakfast and lunch items for most anyone. I was torn between the breakfast burrito, potato pancakes and the breakfast burger. After asking my waitress some questions, I went with the breakfast burrito with chicken instead of chorizo. (no pork for me!) I made this decision based off the fact that they were able to swap out the pork for chicken, and it wasn't a massive burrito, I loved the food and it was just the right portions. Hash browns were good, but tasted a bit funky. I don't know how to describe it, but maybe it was like the grill just got cleaned? I didn't finish them all because of the odd flavor, but also due to me inhaling my burrito at an accelerated pace. My server was fantastic and handled everything like a champ. Decor is spot on and I enjoyed my time here. Will return in the future! read more

This is probably my favorite breakfast spot, it's cute and welcoming. They have organized chaos with the wait times. The only chaos is because they're so busy from open till close, so expect a wait time. There is another location too that is just as good, just parking is easier here. If you come for breakfast/brunch you won't be disappointed. I haven't tried the lunch style dishes. They do have a parking lot and there's a lot of space at the restaurant next-door as well as street parking. As many times as I've been to here, I typically sit up at the bar, they do you have multiple tables as well as outdoor seating. There are a variety of breakfast libations and beer. I typically get a variety of omelettes and I've never been disappointed. On my most recent visit I tried a steak skillet and the steak was seasoned well, it was tender with the eggs and vegetable mix. The breads are from Zingerman (Wonderful) and I've noted homemade jam. We Always leave happy and full. My only downside is there is 2 bathrooms and I am pretty sure the ladies room does not lock. So please do knock! I went here today for the first time with a friend and both waitservice and the food were very good. We sat on their patio which was also nice, and they had the doors open to the inside too (so even if you sit inside you get a breeze). I was originally going to get the Cuban sandwich but the potato pancakes were too tempting to ignore, so I got those (four is a full serving, btw, and two is a half serving) plus added on bacon. The potato pancakes were very good - not the best I've ever had but nice and thick - and I was impressed by the applesauce/apple topping offered, as it was also thick, plus the sour cream was also tasty. The bacon was also delicious but pricey, like $7 for four pieces. My friend got one of their bowls and a side of toast, and enjoyed it. I saw on their menu they use Zingerman's bread, which is always good, too. Small pet peeve: it's cheaper to pay with cash than with a credit card, on a $22-ish bill there was like a 60c difference so I still used my cc. I always prefer restaurants bake those fees into the meal prices. Other than that, I'd love to come back for brunch and have pancakes or something more breakfast-y (I'm not a big eggs fan). The decor was super cute too, and the bathroom was clean. There is parking in the back but beware - for some reason they have two rows, back to back, and we got backed in but luckily my friend is a parking pro and got us out. read more

Great food, great service and great location. Whistle Stop is situated on the corner of hazel and Eton in Birmingham with a lovely, spacious outdoor patio and bright, welcoming interior design. The staff is always attentive, knowledgeable about the menu items and specials, and always keeps my coffee cup hot and full! This last visit I opted for a Spinaberry Salad and it did not disappoint. Was a great portion (I took some home) and was vibrant and full of flavor. The eggs Benedict special was also awesome, great portions of crab and rich in flavor. I've been coming to this diner for over 37 years. Great staff of several kind people, fantastic food, and the upgrade during Covid was a nice change. It's not called it on the menu any longer, but "the favorite" is still my go to. The French Benny and Cinnamon Roll French Toast are delightful as well. I really miss the bakery that is no longer after the renovation unfortunately,...the fresh made bread was so delicious. The Whistle Stop even did our wedding cake 31 years ago today in 1994. The outdoor seating option added during the renovation also provides another option to enjoy the food and fresh air. Give it a try and you may still be enjoying 37 years later as well. read more

It's a beautiful omelette. It's colorful and bright. Sometimes omelettes can be flat, unevenly cooked, and plain. This one was the opposite of it, and I really enjoyed it. The place can definitely be busy on a weekend, so you may have to wait for a table. The waiting area between the outer and inner door is small, so we stood outside to wait. Not as enjoyable in the winter. Great, quick service though. Despite being a busy, smaller restaurant, it did not feel like we were so close to the adjacent table. This and the Pleasant Ridge location is our top 3 favorite brunch spots. This location is newer and more modern interior, still a cool vibe though. It is busy as expected and can be a bit of a wait on the weekends. Menu offering provides a really good variety of items. My go to is the Huevos Mexicanos, turkey sausage instead of sausage, add avocado, poblano peppers, hash browns well done, add green pepper and onions. I like the side of Cinnamon raisin toast with mixed berry jam. My husband rotates between the Hippie, Huevos Mexicanos, Las Migas, Tex Mex, Veggie or Denver skillet. His side bread is usually the cinnamon raisin toast or English muffin or the rye. The food is always consistent. read more

I had the absolute best time having brunch at Whistle Stop! We came here on a Sunday and got seated within about 15 minutes! The atmosphere is warm and bright with both indoor and outdoor seating options. I ordered the Ole skillet, which was a great mix of flavors and textures. I had my eggs sunny side up and got turkey sausage instead of the regular sausage. Potatoes were cooked perfectly and cheese was nicely distributed throughout the warm, sizzling skillet. It came with toast and house made jam. I highly recommend picking their strawberry jam. I loved the skillet but the star of brunch had to be the Fruity Pebbles pancakes. Fluffy and colorful, these pancakes were not only a feast for the eyes but also a deliciously sweet treat. I grew up in Birmingham and remember the old Whistle Stop in the "Rail District" from my high school days. The newly remodeled restaurant is very welcoming. Open and airy. I met my sister here for breakfast. We are both in town from out of state for our mother's 90th birthday celebration. It was a Monday morning and only a few patrons were there, but gradually the tables around us seemed to be occupied. I ordered their cinnamon roll half order. Could not resist since it was stated their cinnamon rolls are homemade. Even a half order was more than enough for me and I took two pieces to go for breakfast the next day. My sister had a spinach and cheese omelette which she liked. The side potatoes were crispy. This place is so good. Every weekend morning there is a line out the door. Went here the morning of Black Friday and at 11am a line started to form going out onto the sidewalk. There are about 30 tables available but the service is so fast you're in and out in 30 minutes at most. A creative and lengthy menu with some really good breakfast foods. My friends in the area highly recommended this place as they basically go every week or so! The wait wasn't too bad, but it was a busy Sunday. I arrived around 11 AM. I only had to wait for about 15 minutes. The service was good! The hostess was very friendly! I wouldn't say the food is anything amazing. Pretty average, but not at all bad. Food was brought out. Food was delicious!! I had the whistle stop benedict but my absolute fave was the connamon swirl pancakes March 17, 2022: VERY busy at 1030a on a Thursday! Since I was by myself, I was able to sit at the counter. I parked in a lot on the next block for Woodward businesses. All the spots on the side of the building were full. Portions are normal/could be eaten in restaurant. Strawberry jam was more like blended strawberries. There were quite a few dishes I wanted, but I managed to choose only 1. Always a great brunch! They have a full bar so you can have a cocktail or add some baileys to your coffee. Excellent coffee and tea selection. I love their French Benedict - croissant with ham and cheese and hollandaise sauce and poached egg - your choice of parm grits or hash browns (both are amazing). Food is always super quick and we've had the same server several times. Very kid friendly except for all the cute salt/pepper shakers, condiments, coffee mixing etc which are fun but messy for the littles. A bit loud when it's busy, they really need some acoustic panels on the ceiling to dampen the sound, but after 9am weekdays and before 9am weekends tend have no wait. Our first time venturing to Birmingham with breakfast in mind. This place did not disappoint. It's on a residential street and honestly felt like it belonged to the people of the city. I've never been here before and from some of the other reviews, this place was recently renovated. It definitely looked new and beautiful. As always, my Tuesday's are for trying out new places with my beautiful breakfast date. We got the kids' silver dollar pancakes with sausage and the French Benedict. Having a croissant instead of an English muffin is absolutely a game changer. This food was delicious. The egg was perfectly runny and the hash browns were nice and crispy. The pancakes were excellent but the sausage was even better! We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. And I've already been asked if we can go back again tomorrow. That would be a No, but soon... read more

I hadn't been here in years, but when I drove by and saw that they had reopened and added a large outdoor dining area, I knew we had to give it a try. I had never been a huge fan of this place in the past. I don't recall the food at all, and the decor was dreadful. After being shut down for an extended period of time for remodeling, I can say with certainty that it was definitely worth the wait! The new decor is a dramatic improvement. There isn't any sign of the old look and that is a positive thing. As mentioned previously, the outdoor dining area is spacious and the front of the building has big garage doors, so even if you're inside you can get a taste of the outdoors. The menu is tremendous with a ton to choose from for a breakfast fan like me. My wife and I both opted for the Bennys (eggs benedict) - she got a traditional and I went for the veggie. Listen, I've been coming to this place for YEARS. Like back when they had the train sound roll on the hour EVERY hour. And honestly after my meal today I'm disappointed. I mean could I go home and make eggs ham and green peppers with potatoes for less, sure. But I mean come on. Prices over here are pretty expensive, but less than downtown. Plus, they don't force a mandatory 20% like a bunch of other restaurants downtown do. The high prices are more product of Washington DC politics than management but still, one person having breakfast with just water came out to about $25, Including tip. Whistle Stop was a cute diner. We enjoyed our time there. The food was like any good diner should be! The skillets were tasty and had variety in them. I personally don't like when skillets are just piled with potatoes or hash browns so I definitely liked that Whistle Stop but a good amount of veggies and meat too. The pancakes were also yummy! They have a good variety of pancake types too, so you can definitely find something you like. We were there in the winter, but looks like they might open the garage doors in the summer which would be awesome. Will definitely have to go back in the summer time. The only part that was meh was you can't make reservations ahead of time. And you need everyone in the party to be there before being seated. Granted, it seems like they move people in and out fairly quickly, we only had to wait ~20 mins. read more

My husband and I came here for a late lunch and we were both very pleased with the food and the service. I got a mimosa and the hangover (eggs, bacon, potatoes, biscuits and gravy). I loved every bit of my meal. My husband got the latke breakfast. He wasn't very fond of his latkes, but liked his eggs and ham. He said my biscuits and gravy was the best thing we got and I have to agree with him on that. My mimosa was also $11 which I do not think was worth it and wouldn't order again. But the food was great! All the tables have different very unique salt and pepper shakers which is so cute. My one complaint is that the table we sat at was rather small and there were a lot of items crowding the table (ketchup bottle, butter bowl, syrup bottle, sugar bowl, etc.) just seemed like a lot for a small table.
