We recently stopped by The Shine Cafe and had an overall good experience with a few areas that could use improvement. I ordered the "Double Trouble" -- French toast loaded with cookie dough, Oreos, Nutella, and chocolate sauce. Let me just say... that dish is a train straight to diabetes. Inside has lots of booth seating and a full bar which was unexpected. Single stall bathrooms but the hand blower is really up high which seemed out of place. The prices are majority 15.85 (or it said 15.58) and I'm not sure why, but it's odd and reasonable. The service was very slow to be honest. We seen our waitress when she took our order, dropped off our food and we paid for the bill. The CBH (corn beef hash bowl) would have been excellent if they would have used actual Swiss cheese as listed. It was more of a white cheddar or white American they used. It came off as a cheese sauce when it melted into the food which I did not enjoy. The corn beef was good and the peppers were fresh. The potatoes weren't bad either. But that cheese ruined my dish. The Oreo pan cakes were filling and a good portion. The best thing were the fried biscuits. I would come back here just to eat that on the menu. I do wish you had more than 2 for the prices, but they were very good. I will say they had the weather channel on and I did enjoy that. Usually you get some kind of news station and that's not always enjoyable. But the channel of choice was great. The biggest hit I think is the bat. If you like having a breakfast cocktail, this can be your place. They also have more than just breakfast. They have special sandwiches, burgers and salads it seems. Our family of six placed an order and waited approximately 40 minutes for our food. When it was finally delivered, my meal was not included with the rest of my family's order. After addressing this, my dish was brought out incorrectly with cheese, despite my request for no cheese. The staff then remade my meal as a to-go order, but it was still incorrect. I've had this on my short list of places to try and stopped in after shopping at Eastern Market for some flowers this morning. The menus extensive with a variety of unique items to choose from. I knew (basically) what I wanted, so off I went. I ended up getting the Pappus bowl which is eggs (chosen your way) over hash browns, gyro meat and feta cheese. The breakfast was filling, tasty and they had some condiments on the table which made life easier. The only thing missing was extra napkins, but not essential to how good the food was when it came out. Most menu items on here run about $15.85. Literally almost all the dishes are priced this way which, for some odd reason I found cute and hilarious at the same time. Considering I was there at 7:30 AM on a Saturday, I was one of the first people in there but families started piling in. Service was great, and one lady seemed to manage all the tables by herself which was impressive. It's in a little strip mall so parking and getting in and out was easy. Had high expectations based on the reviews but could have been better based on experience. First is price. Got bro bowl and a french toast. Both were around $16. For the bowl, it is well presented. and the broccoli, chicken, eggs and other main content were on the top surface, beneath was way too much fried potato cubes. Just note if you get this, yes it is a lot of food, but majority, vast majority it potato. Not ideal. French toast was good, large but not worth 15-16$. It was decorated with a heavy sweet cream cheese/icing? dollop. You eat that and your total fat intake it done, lol. The rest of the toast was delicious, but again nothing special and certainly not worth the price, bringing my rating down. The service was sub par mostly due to them being busy. They serve you once, maybe come check on you once then disappear. Not really their fault, and it seems they are overworked. But in terms of our individual service, not ideal. Conveniently located at the corner of Square Lake (19 mile) and Rochester Road, this long-time dining establishment delivers the goods. They used to be known as Square Lake Diner but about 5 years ago they changed their name to Shine Cafe and eliminated dinner-dining hours as they now are open only until 3pm. They have the same food, same look inside and for the most part, the same personnel, they just took away dinner time. The prices are high but the quality of the food matches the price so you don't feel ripped-off, lol. The coffee is strong, bold, smooth and delicious. During the weekend mornings you might have a small wait to be seated but it is worth the wait. There is plenty of parking outside in this large shopping lot. Nearby is a dance studio and a dry cleaners. If you are in need of a handicap parking spot be aware that they have two handicap spots right near the door BUT they are super-slim spots leaving very little room to exit or enter your vehicle. The cooks and servers are efficient, knowledgeable and kind. The inside ambiance is perfect for relaxing. There are plenty of booths and tables, lots of lighting and pretty artwork to admire. Sorry, no TV with snore-snore-sports to ignore. The menu has a wide-assortment of items to choose from, pick anything, as you will not be disappointed. I've been dining here for over a decade and the food is always fresh, served at the right temperature and served on-time. I chose this place to meet a friend for breakfast after reviewing the menu assuming the oatmeal was an option. ALL oatmeal is made with milk and the cannot change it. ALL salads come with meat, but you can remove it and pay full price. ALL avocado toasts come with cheese and you can remove it and pay almost $14 for avocado toast. After telling the waitress we didn't eat dairy, I shopped the sides and ordered a side of rye toast, side of avocado which was huge-yeah!, and potatoes which are cooked in oil. Toast comes full of butter and we had to send back after explaining no dairy. My do-it-yourself avocado toast was actually pretty good. If you're an omnivore, you will love this place. Food and service wwre great, however. I came there with my daughter who was visiting for the holidays. At 2:50 our conversation was abruptly ended as one person decided to vacuum the entire place. That ended absolutely any conversation since it was just that loud. The server collected our check so we were then able to get a carry out box otherwise we would have had to summon her with a wave. I'm still upset how it affected our mother/daughter luncheon and will not go back there again. What a way to put a weird end to our visit enroute to the airport. Shine is your typical diner style cafe with great morning energy and kindhearted servers, but their food is far from a basic diner. The food here is the perfect start to the day. Ive tried every skillet and my favorite is definitely the butchers. With all those proteins involved it's perfect balanced in salt content and they have never failed to deliver a perfect eggs over easy. The true highlight is their cookie dough french toast. The place was empty with one unhappy server. The omelette was ok, the cheese was overwhelming every other ingredient. Not my favorite. My daughter wanted her chocolate chip pancakes. Your menu says $1 to add chocolate chips, already ridiculous; you charged me nearly $2 for twelve chips... are you kidding? Even if you had the best food in the world, I'm not coming back.
