I will be frequently visiting Lawrence here on out due to my new doc office, so of course I had to Yelp the best spots for lunch (specifically coffee shops that served a lunch menu). There were several spots to choose from and I went here based off of reviews here and Google. I got a small pastry, a Apricot Walnut rugelach, a bite-sized crescent-shaped cookie made from a rich cream-cheese dough. It hosted a combination of raisins, walnuts, apricot jam, cinnamon and sugar. It was so delicious! The sandwich was bomb that I ordered! The Croque Monsieur Sliced ham, smoked Gouda, Swiss, and aioli, grilled on White Sourdough. It had this wonderful smokiness to it from it being grilled, the smoothness of the Gouda and aoli balanced the great crunch from the bread! I agree with the reviews, over 900 and 4.5 stars, it seemed solid and it was. I will have a hard time trying a new place and a different sandwich the next time I am in! read more

My fruit tart was absolutely perfect. I'd seriously drive back to Lawrence just for another one! Also brought home some loaves of sourdough and Asiago bread, and they were both a hit. Over and over again, when I see a vacant space I think, "A second WheatFields would kill it in this location," and I'm positive that they would. Let's break it down on how WheatFields knocks it out of the park for every type of personality: The Health Nut: Big salads, fresh-baked bread, easy veggie opportunities galore The Picky Eater: They have a life-changing PB&J if you're still on the 7 year old diet The College Kid: Everything is almost always under ten bucks, without being in a grease-soaked fast food bag Places with parents: Parents love this kind of place. If they're on the fence, tell them it's like a local, much better Panera Aside from being perfect for everyone, they're always able to be efficient without rushing, to not take shortcuts and make sandwiches perfectly. This used to be a great restaurant that I have left 5 star reviews. My wife ordered a Reuben and the pastrami was 80% fat! My wife trimmed off the fat and ended up with a couple of strips of meat. The manager blamed their supplier. If I had a supplier like that I wouldn't accept their product but I sure as heck wouldn't serve it to my customers. The manager did refund her meal but mine wasn't any better. I wouldn't eat here until I knew they have fixed the problem. For me, I'll wait a year and if they're still in business, I'll go back then. One of the best places I've eaten at in Lawrence! I ordered the mushroom melt and even though I had to wait around 25 minutes, it was worth it! Went on a Saturday around 12:30pm and that seems to be a pretty busy time but it slowed down while I was eating. My pictures can't do justice to how delicious this was because of their weird lighting. All lighting sins are forgiven in the wake of revolutionary sandwiches. I just need to talk about this butternut squash sandwich. Maybe I'm behind the times and everyone already knows about this sorcery--but my mind is blown! Using the green apple as a better, crisper, more dynamic lettuce! Wow! I'm still in awe. I don't normally like 'fun' bread (I just like French or sourdough) but this paired perfectly. I'm in love with this sandwich. I can't stop thinking about it and it has been a couple days. This innovation alone earned my 5 stars. My husband had the croque and that was amazing too-- honestly they went really well together. I did think the butter on the bread was a little heavy handed, so if I ate more than half it may be a bit much, but it was still delicious! The bread with the soup I could've eaten forever. I will say the soup could've used more salt for sure, but I added (quite a bit) and it was fine. The atmosphere is very casual; it's perfect for lunch but I don't know if I would do a dinner date here. One of the best things about WheatFields is they have amazing bread but don't charge as much as some other great bread places in town. This place ruined a perfectly lovely morning. It was a beautiful fall morning with my boyfriend wanting to treat me to a coffee before he had to go to work. I am living for the local coffee here in Lawrence and wanted to try something new. Big mistake. The staff was so incredibly rude to me. I just moved to Lawrence the past couple of months and everywhere the staff has been so incredibly nice even when they might not be able to accommodate a request. Which is why I was so shocked. Things seemed pretty slow and I stepped up to what I thought was the register. I stood there for two full minutes without being acknowledged by the cashier. At first, I thought oh he's busy I'll give him a few seconds to finish up whatever he needs to do before he takes my order. But, after I saw him take money out of the register and put it in the tip jar he just started standing there, doing nothing and looking at me until finally I said I'd like to place an order. He then VERY rudely told me that only the other register could ring in orders and I needed to go down the counter. I mean if he would have said, 'sorry I can't ring in orders, but she can help you down there.' okay cool sorry brother let me slid on down. But no, instead he had to tell me in basically the most rude way possible. Then I go and order, but have to go back to the first cashier to pay? That just seems pretty redundant. But, the real problem came when I got my coffees. I got two large coffees one of them however, was not a large. When you have two cups of coffee and one is visibly smaller than the other but they're supposed to be the same size clearly the smaller one, that says how many ounces it has in it compared to the larger one that also says how many ounces are in it, they are not the same size. So, I tell the barista 'hey, this mocha is supposed to be a large.' The barista told me that it was a large. I then pointed out that my other large coffee was bigger and also marked with more ounces. She said 'I told you that's a large.' I told her 'it's really not and you can just tell by the ounces that's printed on the cup does not match the ounces that's printed on the menu. The ounces that you've given me line up with what the ounces are printed on the menu for a small. But you have a nice day.' Took my coffee and and left. My boyfriend was shocked on how the staff treated me, because I work in customer service and generally I'm pretty much the easiest person to take care of; lots of please and thank yous, rarely ask for anything special on my order, low maintenance, and I tip a minimum of 30%. Also, of any local place I've been in Lawrence the coffee is probably the worst. Places like Alchemy and the Roost have ruined Starbucks for me. I'd rather have a mocha from Starbucks than what I was served. If you're looking for good coffee and/or good service, this is not the place for you. I'd recommend going to Uplift, the Roost, or Alchemy. All three of the establishments listed provide a complete coffee experience that is enjoyable, delicious, and a great value. read more

Terrific stop for lunch. Just passing though town, but I was hoping for something more inspiring than roadside burger kill for lunch and found Wheatfields on Yelp. Took more time than just grabbing any 'ol thing off he highway & it was so worth the trip into town! My #9 was delightful. The bread was soft, flavorful and a perfect compliment to the turkey with cranberry. My two kids enjoyed their sandwiches as well. Daughter ordered the BLaT (#16). She feels she could've made something similar at home, but without the accompaniment of Wheatfield's bread, I doubt it would be quite as delicious. Son thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich (#10) and he's a picky sandwich-eater. Well I was on the witness stand when someone stood up to shout from the jury box that the cinnamon rolls at Wheatfield Bakery are the Absolute BEST! Well, the entire jury came back from their deliberations and the actual verdict was unanimous! Verdict: Guilty as Charged because Wheatfield Bakery is The best in Town & you cannot go wrong with anything you purchase from their menu! Yes, I'm a living witness to this truth after having patronized this business several days in a row. The olive loaf was full of kalamata olive slices and the chew was just right, not doughy at all. The crust was wonderfully browned to perfection and went well with my homemade tub of garlic hummus. The cinnamon rolls could stand alone in a shop all its own. Get there quick as they sell out of them every day & the jury don't lie!!! So gooood & the service is second to none! Yes, my entire foodie squad will be back for these items and so much more. Yes, they know what they are doing when it comes to bread, but i have to rate it on everything. Their sandwich which i did try was a bit dry, but good flavor. The Walnut cinnamon roll was good, but a touch dry. Great environment and tons of light coming through the windows. Its a great place to spend the morning or afternoon. I took myself on a day date to Lawrence this week and my first stop was WheatFields. I'd only been once before and I was excited to get some lunch and settle in with my book. All of their bread and pastries are made in house and you can totally tell. It's nice because they sell their bread in locations across Lawrence so if you're not near the restaurant you can still enjoy their product! As pictured below, I ordered their turkey and cranberry relish sandwich (#9), a chocolate chip cookie, and fresh lemonade. With tip, the entire meal was about $12. The sandwich was served on their Walnut Sage bread, which may have been my favorite part of the entire sandwich. I could eat that by itself. The cranberry wasn't super overpowering but added a touch of sweetness that balanced out the mayonnaise. The sandwich's flavor was pretty tame but I enjoyed it overall! The chocolate chip cookie was one of the best I've ever had, seriously. I'm a snob when it comes to chocolate chip cookies and I was VERY impressed with theirs. It's moist but not doughy or undercooked. I've heard their cinnamon rolls are amazing so the next time I'm up there I'll be trying one! Cozy cafe with great options for small bites ! Went there to hang out for a while in the evening! It was not too crowded and we were welcomed by the aroma of freshly baked breads! We ordered the Vegetarian Reuben hot sandwich ! It was fantastic with tempeh on sourdough rye. It was crispy and perfectly toasted. Absoulutely loved it!
