WheatFields is a better, local version of Panera. During my most recent stop in, I had the spicy tuna melt and side salad with vinegarette. The sandwich is listed #1 on the menu for a reason, and a great one at that. The jalapeño cream cheese adds a creamy texture and spicy kick making it my personal favorite. The salad is a very generous portion topped with heaping scoops of cucumbers, onions, beets and chickpeas. Salads are served with a slice of bread, and it was my lucky day to get rosemary sourdough. Like Oprah, "I LOVE BREAD!" For those with a sweet tooth, I recommend the peanut butter cookie. read more

WheatFields has something of a cult following in Lawrence. It's known for amazing breads and tasty treats - sort of a local (and much better) Panera. This place is Fantastic. Brunch here on Saturday was the first meal I ate in Lawrence. It was perfect. I love that a lot of parts are self serve. This makes everything move much quicker and allows customers to have everything customized their way. They have toasters, butter, and came out on the counter. If you want your bread toasted, you can toast it. They have syrup and other condiments on the counter, so you don't need to ask for anything. They have coffee, fountain drinks, cream, sugar, etc out. So you can refill your own water or coffee or pop as quickly as you like. I ordered a veggie omelette that came with toast and hash browns. Everything was delicious. The omelette wasn't greasy at all, it was exactly as I like it. I also tried the veggie empanada with salad. The empanada was small but very tasty. The salad was greens with 3 salads on top: beets, pasta salad, and cucumber. It was great. I don't normally like beets, but these were very tasty. All in all I enjoyed everything about my experience at WheatFields and would happily return. read more

I love a good, hearty breakfast, but because bacon, eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy are not as healthy as they are tasty, we normally only indulge on special occasions. I reviewed Wheatfields, a bakery and restaurant one block West of Mass Street in downtown Lawrence, on my birthday last year after going there for breakfast. Coincidentally, my wife and I returned for breakfast yesterday on my 60th birthday, enjoying ourselves and allowing me to reassess the rating I gave them last year (6 Bombs Out Of 10 ... More Bombs Are Better!). My wife and I have been buying Wheatfields wonderful breads since we moved to Lawrence a little over three years ago. My favorite is the raisin and pecan sourdough ($4.50), a robust torpedo-shaped loaf with a thick crispy crust outside and plenty of raisins and pecan pieces inside. It toasts marvelously and is delicious alone, with butter, or coated in my favorite toppings, peanut butter and bananas. They have numerous varieties, including sourdough, semolina with sesame and poppy seeds, baguette, ciabatta, Kalamata olive, sourdough, and 100% whole wheat among others. Breads range in price from $4 to nearly $9 for their holiday specials, but the whole wheat with walnuts and raisins is just HALF the price of a similar loaf at a new East Lawrence bakery on Barker, being quite a good value. You order at the counter immediately in front of you as you enter, pay, and are given a small sign to place on your table so the servers can bring your order to the correct table. Drinks are help-yourself with three varieties of coffee (two regular and one decaf) and a small selection of teas and fountain drinks. Always keeping it simple, I went with the Classic Breakfast (#1 - $6.95), coming with two eggs, hash browns, toast, and sausage links or bacon (I went with the bacon of course). They raised their price a buck since last year, but it is still the cheapest breakfast in Lawrence. Adding a half order of biscuits and gravy (#5 - $4.25, up 50¢) brought my very hearty and delicious breakfast to a little over $11, very reasonable compared to other downtown breakfast spots. Not a big egg or meat eater, my wife had a scone and coffee. She loves their scones and was quite happy with this one. Our meals arrived very quickly, even before I was done pouring coffee and toasting my bread. The Classic Breakfast was excellent with the eggs cooked perfectly over-medium, the bacon crispy and not burnt, but the hash browns were not as crunchy as I like them. The half order of biscuits and gravy was plenty for me with a very large biscuit smothered in a thick, savory country gravy with loads of sausage. The coffee was hot, obviously fresh, and delicious. As breakfast goes, I have had better, but we enjoyed our meal and I have to say that you will not find a better breakfast value in Lawrence. Wheatfields is a very popular meeting place with great bread, excellent coffees, and tasty breakfasts. They seem to do very well because the place is almost always full. My only gripe is with the staff who seem to have an "attitude". There is no "Hi, welcome to WheatFields" when you come in, it is more like "Yea, what do you want". Employees are routinely impersonal and abrupt, not warm and inviting. A smile and occasional "thank you" from staff would be much appreciated. WBC is one of our favorite restaurants in Lawrence. The food is good. The service is good. The daily specials are great.

This place never disappoints and even though it often looks very busy, I never seem to have a problem finding a seat. This is probably because many people come in for their delicious breads and pastries to go. I have gotten two of their breads. I always mean to branch out and try other flavors but these two flavors are so fabulous I always end up getting one of them. My very favorite is the walnut sage. Very close contender however is the Kalamata olive loaf. I especially like it at this time of year when I use it to make fresh bruschetta. Their pastries are very tempting and range from simple cookies to flourless chocolate tortes. Most are single serving sizes but they also sell some larger desserts like cheesecakes. When I first moved to town, I innocently purchased a loaf of Wheatfield's Kalamata olive bread from the Merc. It was the only loaf left, so I figured it had to be good. And it was. So I whenever I went back to the Merc, I looked for it, but could never find it. A friend told me that the Merc only carries it on Tuesdays (not sure if this is true). The fact that I should just *go* to Wheatfield's when it was walking distance from my house, never occurred to me, but I tend to not go to bakeries too often. I'm not terribly into bread, at least not enough to go out of my way and buy it at a *bakery.* Bread has to be *really* outstanding for me to be enthusiastic about eating it. This kalamata olive bread is a whole other "bread at the bakery," folks. Thick, flakey crust and practically succulent inside, with tons of whole olives. Wheatfields is always crowded i the mornings and lunch time, because they serve more than just breads and pastries. I've yet to try a sandwich, but everyone I know in town goes on about how good they are. So, the bread. I went in and lo and behold, they had plenty of it, imagine that. They will offer to slice it for you, but that's not for me. Am I weird to think that slicing ruins bread? I prefer to tear it off in chunks and dip it into a really good olive oil. Add a glass or bottle of wine and I'm set for a meal (add tomatoes off the vine in the summer). I've bought one cake here and it was divine--a chocolate raspberry variety. I need to mention the friendly counter staff, too. Nothing worse than surly bakery staff to make you feel like a bovine slob (I'm neurotic, haven't I mentioned that a dozen times?) I'd go back more often if I could fathom spending 7 bucks on a loaf of bread. Luckily they sell smaller loaves, too, but I always go for the large ones. I've probably purchased 3-400 loaves of bread over the years from Wheatfields, maybe more (likely). You don't go back that many times unless you really like their product. Their breads are like no others in this town (or the midwest for that matter) and they were on the cutting edge of bringing great products made mostly of local ingredients long, long ago. Their desserts are sublime, particularly their carrot cake which is a favorite take home choice for a special treat. They have plenty of other selections but when you find something this good, why move on? For years I'd stop here once a week, sometimes twice, for a to go cup of coffee, one of their savory scones with cheese, and a fruit cup. Always good, always there, always a part of that awful morning drive I no longer have to make. I miss that to-go breakfast. I don't miss the commute to Kansas City. And while most people think of it as a bakery, it's the best breakfast in town for my money. Their biscuits and gravy are sinful in a great way. Lunch is wonderful as well, but in the evening, their dinners are strangely one of the better kept secrets. I'll just keep that secret. When you're around this long and the lines are still out the door on late Sunday mornings you know they're doing it right. Is every visit here perfect? Nah, but that Epi and the Ciabattini paired with some great olive olive, sea salt and fresh cracked pepper at home is as much a part of the great meals in our house over the years as about anything else I can think of. So here's a glass of vino raised to the hard working folks that rise in the middle of the night and make great bread on the backs of the strong coffee that's served up here. Unhappy with the food today it was dry, old. The cheesecake was clearly old dry and extra firm. The chocolate mousse was dry crumbly old, not mousse in any sense of the term. Food: 30 out of 50 I had the #3 - Grilled portabella sandwich with Provolone, Tapenade, Caramelized Onions, Wilted Kale, Oil & Vinegar on Fresh Ciabatta. The Ciabatta was delicious. It had a fantastic crust and a soft chewy interior. The portabella was nicely cooked and had a nice meatiness to it. The Tapenade was a little over powering for the rest of the sandwich. I found myself with an aftertaste of olives instead of the delicious portabella. I wish I would have had more or tasted more of the caramelized onions and Kale. There was either not enough on the sandwich or the tapenade overpowered the flavors. Overall it was an ok sandwich. Service: 23 out of 25 Over all the service here is painless. You pick your food from the menu above the counter and order it with the staff member behind the counter. The only hiccup that I noticed was the fact that you order at one register and pay at another. It seemed to confuse the people ahead of me. I don't know why though because they have giant signs that say "order here" & "pay here" above each register. Atmosphere: 23 out of 25: Overall the atmosphere screams "Sandwich Shop/Bakery". I loved walking in the door and seeing a giant shelf of fresh breads. That is an automatic bonus. The display of desserts was also very nice. The general seating area was a bit bland. It could have more going on. But it is a bakery and it doesn't really need any of those frills to add to the experience. Yum! I've been a faithful customer at Wheatfields since my college days when they were newly opened (uh-oh now you'll know how old I am!). Everything here is absolutely delicious. I'm not normally a bread person, but French and European style breads are where I make an exception. There is no better vessel for fresh butter or artisan cheese than a slice of crusty sourdough! They do bread the way it is meant to be done. So many flavors and varieties fill the racks and cases and it's rare that a family holiday goes by when a loaf of Wheatfields bread isn't present. I love going to the cafe for lunch. They have a great selection of sandwiches, although I frequently get the tuna salad. My mom almost always gets the turkey and cranberry sandwich on sage bread. My husband tends to be more adventurous and switches between a variety including the vegetarian Reuben and the Genoa salami and provolone. Their quiches, empanadas and salads are always reliable as well. Their pastries are my true weakness though. My favorites are the chocolate eclairs and lemon curd tart, although I've never had anything from the pastry case I wasn't compelled to devour immediately. I just really have a hard time finding true French style eclairs with a correctly made choux pastry and an actual pastry custard cream (as opposed to whipped cream or pudding), so I frequently bring pastries home to Dallas with me, so I can make the bliss last a little longer. I came across WheatFields during my recent trip to Lawrence and well... I fell in love. Maybe it was the simplicity of the environment or the variety in options... All I know is I really enjoyed the experience. WheatFields is a good sized bakery with a dining area in case you wish to sit down to enjoy a meal. There are two separate counters for ordering, one for purchasing breads/pastries/coffee to take home and another counter to order sandwich/meal options to dine in. Sandwiches are about 6-7$ but they are big portions that will fill you up! Chips, salad, soup, etc. can be purchased separately. I ordered a #3 mushroom melt with a cup of chickpea and spinach soup. The soup was different, but I loved every spoonful. But the sandwich.... Perfection. After I finished, I bought two coconut macaroons to bring home and well.... They didn't really make it home, but I tried!! Everything in the display case looks fresh and delicious. I definitely recommend WheatFields to anyone in the area... Oh man! Getting a quick breakfast in Lawrence? Highly suggest stopping by this spot. We all got the breakfast taco, which was in a large single flour tortilla that took up half of the plate - super good. It comes with feta but I switched it out for cheddar (duh). Simple breakfast but it was all really tasty. We also split a cinnamon bun that was incredible - on the chewier side, but still very very good. So I went ahead and tried another shot at the breakfast menu and was surprisingly unsurprised. I'm upgrading my problem with under-heated food from aberration to semi-chronic issue. The biscuits and gravy, which were ample in size to say the least, were served up very quickly this time, but it was an immediate race to finish the food before the entire dish was chilled over. The starting temperature was just barely on the edge of being warm enough to eat, which meant that despite my quick pace (meant to salvage the meal), I couldn't finish before my gravy had become cool to the touch and far too solid to be considered even a cousin to appetizing. Oh Wheatfields breakfast, how I love thee. I have breakfast at Wheatfields with my in-laws approximately every month, and it's always a treat. I typically have the classic breakfast -- eggs sunny-side-up, hash-browns, and multi-grain toast. The cooks at Wheatfields have a talent at getting the eggs perfectly done and the hashbrowns nice and crispy. The bread is Wheatfields's own great multi-grain bread, which you can toast in the convenient dining room toasters. In addition, the bottomless coffee is just a great way to start the day. My family is also in love with the cinnamon rolls -- a cinnamon roll bigger than a softball, but much tastier than a softball. My father in-law always has one for himself, and my wife, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law split another. My wife is a big fan of their house-made granola with yogurt, and sometimes I get the hankering for the biscuits and gravy -- a giant biscuit in a bowlful of sausage gravy (the b&g is also available in half portions for lighter appetites). And the value cannot be beat. We get breakfast and coffee for five for under $40. In sum, the breakfast at Wheatfields is not to be missed. read more

I really really really love Wheatfields. I've never gotten anything I've been disappointed in (it's a miracle!!), and when they screw up, they fix it ASAP. Their breads are chewy and fresh, some with interesting additions like herbs, nuts, or olives. The focaccia is amazing!!! We love their bread for sandwiches, and I've made a killer bread pudding with their pecan raisin bread. Get a punch card for a free loaf! They use their bread on the sandwiches, which are fresh and inventive. I recently got the prosciutto and eggplant panini, which was killer. Their sandwiches don't come with any sides, but with the quality of the food, you don't need anything else. They offer dinner options that look interesting, but I've yet to go there for dinner. I've been to breakfast once and got the biscuits and gravy. A half order is more than enough, and it's a great price! It had big chunks of sausage and the biscuit was light and flaky. They have a small pastry case with macaroons, tarts, cream puffs, etc. They're nice little treats for a special occasion, or just because! A bakery that serves an affordable brunch with nice vegetarian options, Wheatfield's is a staple of Lawrence that continues to serve it's loyal customers well, including me, even though I no longer live in Lawrence. I was catching up with a friend who was moving to Lawrence. We met for breakfast at 7 AM, and both ordered the same thing: the #4, the Primavera omelet. It comes loaded with zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and spinach. Wow, the internet is telling me that it's spelled "omelet" inside the US and omelette elsewhere. I'm having a real moment of clarity because I don't recall how I prefer to write it. What's worse is that I don't remember if I had this moment in another Yelp review and wrote about it in the same way. Unimaginable. I also ordered two eggs sunny side up to see how well their eggs were done. Spoiler: they're cooked pretty well and taste great. The omelette (trying to mix it up mid-review to feel out which I like more) had excellent roasted vegetables inside, and the egg itself was cooked well. My only gripe with Wheatfield's is that the hashbrowns leave much to be desired. They're fried well, but the potato is cut too thinly, is too greasy, and is overall not on the same level as their eggs, bread, and other offerings. This is the most amazing bakery in the country. I travel extensively for work and pleasure and have had bread and pastries everywhere and NONE come close to the breads. Especially the Croissants they are the best I have ever had and try the Ham and Cheese Croissant. For Breakfast the Biscuits and Gravy Full order is huge and some of the best I have ever had. The style of ordering is similar to Jasons Deli BUT WAY MORE FASTER for the most part they get your food to do pretty quick (when its not immensely busy) Ive heard the Biscuits & Gravy is to die for but every time I come in i don't get there early enough and its all SOLD OUT! But their pastries, quiches, salads, muffins all for the most part have been tasty! Their salad and empanada I got once was good but I think just depending on your taste buds and liking the beets and dressing were a bit too much bitter and sour for me, the empanada was good but just a bit over cooked and too hard to cut in with STILL not bad food by any means still tasty but not necessarily amazing. The hash browns however Im not as impressed with their just SOOO PLAIN! They need more seasoning or at least salt.
