West Side Cafe is a step back in time and we were very pleased. We were warmly greeted at the door, seated quickly (even though we were busy), and had our order taken within a few minutes. The portions were nice, prices were reasonable, and the wait staff was attentive. We sat at the counter and were very impressed with how all staff interacted. They were polite, smiling, and helping one another- something that was so noticeable that I thought about it after we left. Been coming here for a long time. I really like everything about this place. The staff is friendly, the decor is homey, and the food is great. It also travels really well if you want to get a take-out order. I used to come here with my last girlfriend before we split up. We loved getting their breakfast foods for dinner. Now I tend to only come here for take-out because my mom likes their catfish and I really enjoy the chicken fried steak. Came from Cali to visit my son and new Grandson. Found this place and thought I would give it a try. Was amazed on the amount of cars in the lot. It was Sun am so it was expected. As a party of three we didn't even have to wait 5 min. The menu has everything so choices were open. We ordered AND received our food extremely fast. I went with the country fried steak and eggs with biscuit and gravy. Next time I will go with the regular steak (med-rare) and eggs. Now for my only complaint. The gravy was ok but a little bland but maybe it was the batch? Will I go back oh heck yeah. You have to hand it to all the people working there. Stopped by for breakfast this morning and had one of the best home style breakfasts I've had since I was a kid. The location reminded me of a place my grandparents took me to as a kid. The prices are beyond reasonable and the food is incredible. The entire staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Also they had dairy free powder creamer packets which was extremely surprising but also delicious. My only regret was not snagging a piece of pie for later when leaving but I did take a fresh baked chocolate chip cookie... which is bigger than my hand and super soft. We had a group of eight and walked right in at 8:00 am on a Saturday. Get there early, because it was packed with lots of people waiting when we left. Our server was wonderful - she was quick and personable. She always appeared at the right time with coffee, tea, and water. Always great food and service. 1st time I tried it was perhaps 20 years ago. Moved further East and hadn't been back in a while. This fall though I began to be in the area periodically and began to visit it again. Have had several great meals there in the last few months. One of my favorites is the chicken and dumplings and the Friday special - Beef Tips and Noodles. The breakfast burrito is also crazy good. Make sure to ask for a fair amount of their homemade salsa. For me, Ole' South Pancake House's food is unremarkable expect for their Dutch Babies and German Pancakes. This place is similarly unremarkable save their cheesy potato casserole, which tasted homemade. Everything else was just average, from the steak and eggs, the french toast... and the oatmeal cake was way too sweet and the maple syrup watery. For a below average breakfast, it was $56 for three people. I think folks just like this place for the Texas Southern ambiance. But I won't be going again, it ain't anything special. read more
